I Feel Free

ArtbegottiWhat would you do to feel free? I Feel Free is a Metroidvania-style platformer by TrueFire that's all about finding your way to freedom. Starting as a blob with no distinguishable features, you've got to collect power-ups in order to develop your abilities and access new areas, like a shorter version of the exploration game K.O.L.M..

I Feel FreeYour intially ovoid character can be moved back and forth using [WASD] or the [arrow] keys, and eventually you'll be able to stun enemies and glide using [Z] and [X]. As you collect power-ups and grow body parts, you'll gain the ability to jump across chasms, bounce up walls, and stick to ceilings by your head, which has to be one of the more bizarre superpowers out there. Once you make yourself into something more, something complete, you'll have the opportunity to escape the tiny dungeon, but you may be tempted by the additional accomplishments of collecting trophies scattered around the world (most of which have to be collected when you've gathered all the power-ups, which is a shame). Though this game isn't as long or complex as other Metroidvanians out there, you can still fill a coffee break or two by picking a difficulty you're comfortable with (the only notable difference between levels is how many checkpoints you're given) and go on a journey to end your restlessness and feel free.

Man, even easy mode is pretty tough.

Ditto that, Buttons..

Pressing down to jump higher is just counter intuitive and annoying. The rest of the controls feel a bit sticky or have a half second delay. I concur Buttons, easy is still tough. Nice idea though but give me Robot Wants over this any day.

Wall jumping is incredibly tedious.

Blech. Too finicky. I don't want to accomplish something in games, I want to escape. I get enough micron level engineering optimization in my job that I don't want to have to practice it on my own.

I seriously think this is missing a highdifficulty tag

I finished it on Medium with less than typical difficulty for a puzzle platformer.

Two of the trophies are behind hidden walls. I didn't get them all, so I don't know if there's a different ending for getting 19/19 of them.

Well that shaved a bit off my lifespan, I'm sure, just from the frustration of it. Nothing like getting to the end of a tricky segment, only for your character to decide not to jump.

All in all a pretty enjoyable though frustrating game, and a good sense of accomplishment when I finished it.

This is utter rubbish. I regularly get keys not responding properly so it thinks I've either not pressed or am holding down a key when that's not the case, the jumps require microscopic pixel precision and timing, and there's often no real clue as to where you should go next. Way too hard, I gave up.

Bad controls and too difficult. I'll stick with robot...

Ending with 19/19 collectibles (have not finished with less so not sure if this differs):

Climb the final ladder into the sunshine, fade to white with message "You feel free", then screen standing on the grass with the messages "You have attained FREEDOM" and "You found 19/19 collectibles"

Um. yeah. I ragequit. A game can't be this choppy where perfect timing/jumping are required. Which is a bummer, because this has a lot of promise.

I feel like I'm stuck. Just got the

Bouncy Boots

upgrade, and I can't get out at the end because there are blocks in the way, even though I have the upgrade to get past them. And going back the way I came seems impossible.
