Hermit Crab Room

It may be in Japanese, but you don't need to grok the lingo to play Sanpoman's Hermit Crab Room, where you're locked in a room with a creatively crustacean flair, and if you want to escape, you'll need to crack a code or several to open the door. The cursor will change when it passes over something you can click on to interact with, and the transparent bars that pop up when you mouse over some edges of the screen can be used to move around the room or back away from certain things. Click on an item in your inventory to highlight it, then on the question mark icon to view it up close... some objects need to be activated by clicking around with them in this way before you can use them! Hermit Crab Room is decidedly bite-sized in a good way, and while it falls back on some classic escape game tropes (I may faint if I ever find a remote with batteries in it in one of these games), it's also satisfyingly clever and logical apart from a few sneaky hot spots. Whether you're passionate about cuddly little crabs too, or you just want a solid and cute escape to make your day a little brighter, Sanpoman has you covered with Hermit Crab Room.

Hermit Crab Room Walkthrough
(Yes, it's all Japanese - but it doesn't make it that much harder. Farthest left menu button is Start)

Exploring

Door View

There's a large hermit crab on your left. Zoom in to see that it has a slot in its head. Nothing we can do here for now.

There's a small cabinet on the right. It has a branch of candles we can't light yet.
Top shelf opens! Collect Hermit Shell #1

Bottom shelf needs a 3 number code. We'll come back.

Lamp View

The lamp has 3 lit bulbs. You can zoom in on each. One has screws on it.

There's a small chair to your right with clickable buttons, but we don't have a code yet

Dresser view

There's a small table with a box that needs a half-circles code.

The dresser has 3 drawers & a mirror.

The mirror is dirty and we can't clean it yet.

But look above it - oh! A code of half-circles!

Try looking at the plant

Collect a very tiny Hermit Shell #2

The left drawer won't open - it doesn't seem to have a handle

The middle drawer needs a code of light buttons. It seems to match the candle branches.

The right drawer opens! Collect a Remote.

It has a button that toggles from a lamp & a crab.

Flip it over to see that... it has no batteries. Oh, this IS an escape game.

Shelf View

Here, there is an empty shelf with 5 circles. We can place the Hermit Shell we have on it, but we don't have enough yet.

There's one more thing to collect here - it's a bit hidden

The bottom-right of the shelf has a Battery

Solving

Bottom Shelf Code

You'll need: Remote & a battery

Use Remote on the lamp to turn off the lights & see a code

You've found a small Hermit Crab! Your Japanese is asking if you can have his shell. But he wants a replacement.

From a zoomed back view (where you can see the whole dresser), there's a small yellow thing in the top corner of the Hermit Crab's drawer.

Collect Screwdriver

Circle Box

This code comes from the dresser mirror

Down, Up, Down, Down, Down, Up, Up

Receive Drawer Handle

Left Drawer of Dresser

Open the Circle Box & use the Drawer Handle on the cabinet door.

Collect Lighter

Chair Code

To get this code, you will need to have collected the Drawer Handle, and used it on the Left Drawer

The code is as follows:

Left, Left, Right, Right, Left, Middle, Middle.

Make sure to pay attention to both arrows- and ALSO enter the code as:
Middle, Middle, Left, Right, Right, Left, Left.

Receive Hermit Shell #3 & Hankerchief

Center Drawer of Dresser

To solve this, you must have a Lighter

Light the lighter (in the ? view) and use on the branch of candles in Door View

Where the candles lit, press those buttons on the drawer.

The only ones not lit should be the rather left, the bottom-right, and the top-right.

Collect Hermit Shell #4

Getting Hermit Shell #5

We're going to want to go back to our little friend in the dresser near the door. He has a shell, but wants an exchange.

You'll need a Screwdriver

Go to the lamp & zoom in on the lampshade with a "5" on it. There are screws here! And now that the shade is detached, it looks kinda of like a shell, right?

Use your 'replacement shell' on the hermit and select the left option in Japanese

Collect Hermit Shell #5

Placing the Shells

You'll need 5 Hermit Shells & a Hankerchief

Use the Hankerchief on the dresser mirror to see your smiling face & your very helpful shirt.

Place the 5 shells as indicated by the shirt

Second Smallest, Middle Size, Largest, Smallest, Second Largest

Receive Hermit Crab Card

Large Hermit Code

You'll need Remote & Hermit Crab Card

Insert the Card in the slot in the large hermit crab's shell to see that you can make him raise his claws & wink.

If you haven't already, set your Remote to the Hermit Crab switch (in the ? inventory view), and use it on our little buddy in the dresser in Door View.

Replicate this order of winks on the large Hermit Crab

Right, Left, Left, Left, Right, Left, Right

Receive Door Key, use it on the Door - and you're out!

And I'm out!

I had the hardest time until I found...

The screwdriver.

It was hidden in one of the cupboards.

Look above the crab inside the cupboard.

Things I have:

4 shells, a lamp cover (used SD), a remote (used to get L/R code)

Things I need:

1 shell, a place to use the L/R code, a place to use the lamp cover, and something flat to insert into the giant hermit crab.

There's some location I haven't found, I think.

Nevermind. Apparently a little Japanese would help....

Where do hermit crabs get their shells from ?

They use other creatures shells.
What could be used as an alternative to its shell ?

The lamp shade

You should now have 5 shells and somewhere to put them.

That will give you what you need for the giant hermit crab

That was very cute.

I found one fiddly spot:

Putting the lamp shade on the small crab. I must have clicked that little guy a dozen times before it finally "took."

And I couldn't believe I missed one obvious thing:

After making the couch code work, I forgot to do it the other way, as indicated in the clue. D'oh!

Reply

What exactly am I supposed to use the blinking eye code on or with? I don't think I'm getting a fifth shell without solving it.

Reply

for the life of me I can't seem to get the code for the couch to work..I'm almost positive I'm doing it right, but it doesn't seem to work for me

I'm stuck with

the candle tree. I see the lights I can press that are in the same pattern and I have a lighter and the remote that I've used on both lamp and crab. I also don't have a place for the left-right code, a flat thing to put in the big crab, or the second smallest shell. I have a feeling one of those comes from the candle code but I'm not sure how to make the candle code work.

Reply
Leopardmask June 8, 2015 7:07 PM

Yes, I figured that much out, but how do you

light the candles?

Reply
Leopardmask June 8, 2015 8:21 PM

Ohhhhh, of course. Now that you say that it seems really obvious. Thank you, now I've made it out!

Reply

That was a cute little escape game!

I got a bit stuck there for a bit, because

I forgot about the yellow circle in the corner of one drawer, which then becomes

the hidden screwdriver in the top left corner of the crab cupboard

Also, I knew clicking on the hermit crab in the cupboard asked a question with a Yes/No answer, but wasn't sure about the question.

When you've obtained a lampshade to swap for the crab's shell, click on the crab and then the answer on the left ('hai', or 'yes').

Don't over-think the couch button code.

Follow the buttons from top to bottom (top most dot is in the middle, so press the middle button first).

Doing the exact same code in reverse will open up a different couch compartment with a second item inside.

That was the cutest thing I've ever played. Who knew winking hermit crabs were what my life needed?

Working on a walkthrough!

Reply

That was so cute! I got stuck twice

once trying to find the screwdriver (it doesn't feel like an obvious hotspot), and the second time with swapping the hermit crab shell... I didn't realise it was asking me a question, so didn't realise I was meant to click on an answer. So I was kind of stuck for a while with that stupid lampshade, trying to put it on the crab!

It was otherwise short and sweet!

Thank you, Dora, for the "grok the lingo" reference. I wonder if Alex would kopat this game?

I enjoyed the reuse of elements or features in multiple puzzles. That's not a trait I usually see in these short & sweet room escapes.
