JoyeGrace's DiaryI'm going to talk to Natalie today. She hasn't talked to me for a month, and I'm pretty sure it's because Ken told her not to. I think it's about time I tell her what I think. Maybe I should think carefully... hopefully, she'll listen to me. Sometimes games are just there for us when we want to have some fun, blow up the princess, and save the zombies, or something like that. Other times, we want to explore more difficult and painful stories. Grace's Diary by GPTouch manages to seamlessly integrate the theme of relationship abuse into a sensitive and moving visual novel. It won first prize in a game design contest by Jennifer Ann's Group, a charity against teen dating violence.

In the first part of the game, in classic point-and-click style, you click on various objects in Grace's bedroom to trigger memories about her friend Natalie. When you remember something important to tell Natalie, you write it down on your memo pad. Sometimes remembering something from one object can allow you to remember something from another object, so you have to click on objects more than once. Once you think you've remembered enough, you pick up your cell phone and call Natalie. Then, you click through a dialogue tree, sharing your memories with Natalie--if she'll hear you. There are two endings, so you may want to save before picking up that phone.

The delicate, sketchy quality of the art and the restrained music quickly establish a sense of intimacy. I felt as if I were really being let inside Grace's mind as she struggled to decide what to do about her friend. It may seem like a minor challenge compared to escaping from a ghost or mad man in a horror game, but the very reality of the situation made it scary in a way that those games could never be. Most of us have known or will someday know a Natalie. How to intervene? Should we even try, or will we just make it worse? The biggest flaw in the game is that the dialogue is clearly written by a non-native speaker, and hasn't been properly edited. However, despite some awkwardness, some misspellings, and some grammar errors, the meaning is still easy to grasp, and perhaps more importantly, the emotions and personality of the characters come through clearly.

Frequently, this kind of "edutainment" title is so forced, the characters so flat and predictable, and the plot so clearly just checking off boxes on a government list, that only an assignment could force you to play it. Grace's Diary doesn't try to force anything down the player's throat, nor does it allow "the message" to overpower its gameplay and plot. It's worth playing, not to "raise awareness" or to "learn the warning signs" or some other phrase that appears on a press release, but because the story of Grace's concern for Natalie, though sad and brief, is beautiful.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

Thanks for the three ending bit, InsanePenguin - I almost missed it because I didn't think about it.

Huzzah visual novels! I'm surprised why no one else felt that this game has the same visual flair as Hotel Dusk - down to the pencil-shaded characters and range of emotions. Kinda makes me want to play Hotel Dusk again, but I'm waiting until the sequel is out.

WALKTHROUGH

If this is your first time playing, please do watch the prologue - it provides the background to this story. If you have played it before (or hate reading), hold Ctrl to skip the story.

These two are on the side of the bed (side that you start off with).
Cell phone

1. Click the cell phone by Grace's bed.
2. Click Not Yet

Grace finds out that Ken is violent and very forceful, using violence to pressure Natalie to say what he wants her to say.

Style changed

0. May require you to do Party first. I can't test because I didn't need that.
1. Click on the picture on top of Grace's bed.

Grace finds out that Natalie is being pressured by Ken to cover her skin more. As Natalie lifts her right arm to hide from Grace, Grace sees Natalie's tennis wristband, something Natalie hates wearing.

These two are on the right side of the screen (click the Right arrow to shift to the right side)
Poster

0. May require you to click the computer on the left side. I never had to.
1. Click the shelf of books underneath the green poster

Grace printed out a website containing some resources for violence in teen dating. She feels that this would help Natalie in getting the help she needs.

Party

1. Click the piece of paper closest to you, right of the waste basket.

Grace recalls going to a party with Natalie and overhearing Ken making fun of Natalie behind her back (basically saying that she was a weak fool). Grace confronts Ken, but is interrupted when Natalie walks in.

Now click on the left arrow, and click on the cell phone again. This time, click "Give Natalie a call". SAVE HERE!

The Call

1. Click "Talk about the party". [Requires Party]
2. Click "Tell her you think Ken might be dangerous". [Requires Style Changed]
3. Click "Talk about her cell phone". [Requires Cell Phone]
4. Click "Tell her about the website". [Requires Poster]

The Endings
There are three endings to this game. Two of them being bad, one of them being good. All of them are made during The Call, so you can save right before doing The Call to see all three.

Ending 1: Grace says something wrong or gives up on the first three choices.

Natalie hangs up on Grace, and they stop being friends. Natalie keeps sticking with Ken and his gang. Grace notices in school that Natalie was wearing more clothes, and even wearing a wristband on the other arm, indicating more physical abuse. Grace, though, knows that she can no longer save her friend.

Ending 2: [Passing the first three choices,] Grace lets Natalie decide instead of giving her the website.

Grace and her mother meets up with Natalie, and confronts Ken. After Ken begs, Natalie decides that Ken will change, and sticks with him. Grace sees Ken smirk behind Natalie's back, and realizes that Ken will never change. Grace's mother comforts her daughter, telling her that they did all they could have done, and that Natalie had to be the one to take the next step.

Ending 3: Grace tells Natalie about the website [as per the walkthrough]

Grace tells Natalie the phone number of the group she found, and it is understood off-screen that Natalie calls them. Grace and her mother meets up with Natalie and confronts Ken. Even though Ken begs, Natalie summoned up the courage to take a break from their relationship. As Natalie gets into Grace's car, Ken's real colors start to show, basically ordering Natalie to get back to him (to no avail). Once they drove off, Natalie breaks down in Grace's arms.

Gotta admit, while this is nowhere as deep as many visual novels, I do have to give credit for giving a good story. Now, if only it wasn't as resource hungry... (I've been running on low virtual memory the entire time I've been writing this! Granted, I only have 512 MB RAM...)

Well I have

  • There's room for one more, but I don't know if there is one. I certainly can't find it.

    Oh, power of posting, do you ever let me down?

    I found "style change" in the picture

    Time to call!

    ((moments later))

    Well that was enjoyable. A bit short, but touching. That darned Ken.

    That was a nice game! I really liked the art. The message was nice. It was sad :( I got the nice ending, I suppose. I don't really want to see the bad ending.

    The solution

    On the right side of the room, click on the sheets of paper on the floor until you find the Party invitation. I think it's the one that looks nearest to you. --> Get "Party"

    On the right side of the room, click on the shelf above the TV to get "Poster".

    On the left side of the room (having obtained "Party" first), click on the picture frame above the bed to get "Style".

    Finally click on the cellphone to get "Phone". Save the game, then call Natalie! Pick the dialogue options that reference the specific memories/don't sound like they will make Natalie hang up.

    Well worth playing this game. I noticed that the characters' expressions and body language change as the dialogue proceeds, but because you tend to focus on the boxes to read what's going on, you tend to ignore this. I wonder if there's some way to improve on that.

    Search as I might, I can only find

    Poster, from looking at the concert poster.

    Style Change, from looking at the picture again.

    And Cell Phone, from not calling Natalie.

    I always get what I assume is the bad ending. I wanna know what happens in the good ending, or even better, GET the good ending! D:

    Don't worry, Alabaster, the bad ending isn't "bad" as much as it is emotionless. Fortunately, none of these games are violent, even in words, and you find the darker parts yourself. Sadly, the rest of these games are as obvious as most in this genre, and some are simply glitchy and confusing. The second place is worth a play for pure laugh-out-loud "durr, he's bad" stuff. I do wonder why none of these games feature the gender roles changed, as from these games you would think it was impossible for a girl to be an abuser.

    Actually, there are three endings. There is one good ending and two bad endings with the same feeling to them, but there are three endings. Anyway, this game was really beautiful. I didn't find it forced and the characters seemed like they could be real people. None of the dialogue seemed scripted, and the message was clear, but not overshadowing. By the end I got to really despise Natalie's boyfriend. The bad endings are so sad, but the good ending is really sweet, so take your time before calling and make sure to save! That way even if you mess up you can go back and get the good ending. Overall a really nice game. :)

    This has got to be the deepest flash animation I have ever seen. Aside from a few typos, I personally believe that everybody should see this immediately. This actually happens, people. Sometimes, it even brings death. Please. Watch this and understand what it is saying. Use the walkthrough submitted by Anon if you need to. It should be right above this post.

    The plot is pretty original, but as far as gameplay and graphics go, this game is a blatant ripoff of Hotel Dusk:room 214 for the DS. Thats not excactly a bad thing, its just the truth.

    Thanks for all of the great comments & discussion! We've run this game design contest for three years and are happy that the quality of the entries continues to increase. We're also happy that these games are reaching such a wide range of people.

    I agree that the lack of any "male victims" is an issue (and discussed in a recent Gamasutra interview) but think that it's natural in light of the little exposure that this issue receives. We always make it clear that dating violence isn't a "female" issue but instead an "equal opportunity" issue affecting people regardless of gender, sexual orientation, social classification, race, etc.

    I'm hopeful that for next year's contest we'll see more great games; maybe they'll take some of your suggestions into account!

    I've had some time to think about what I've played and seriously read some of the comments, and I do want to mention one thing I failed to when I wrote my walkthrough.

    It is that I seriously hope you all to not treat this as a simple 'game'. As much as it is ultimately a game, I ask you all to treat this 'game' as if it were to happen to yourself, or someone you know. As Joye (the reviewer) wrote, we know or will know a Natalie at some point in our lives, or are/will become a Natalie ourselves. And this doesn't need to be strictly with teen couple violence - I refer to Air Pressure for something similar.

    When that happens, there will only be one shot. No "new game" or "load game" to correct our mistake, no "walkthrough" for us to follow, no time to slowly consider our decisions (for even inaction is an action). So... I don't know what I really want to say, but I guess its along the lines of "try to take this situation seriously and play it as if it was your own friend on the line" or something like that.

    To that effort, I admit that this game is great - I said before that this game is not as deep as many other visual novels. Perhaps not, but I will now say that this game does immerse you into its world - if you allow it. Please - allow it to.

    This game was overall really good, and it made its point without being too after-school special about it. After reading the comments, I went back and played to get the third ending I'd missed, and I feel the need to comment on it.

    The ending I'd missed was the one where you let Natalie decide at the end instead of telling her about the website. While I agree that the point that in these situations the victim will often hope in vain that the abuser will change and stay with him/her was well-illustrated, there was a part of this ending that really bothered me.

    When Grace's mother tells her to get back in the car because "there's nothing more we can do," and to not bother telling Natalie's mother, I was absolutely appalled. If you know a child (anyone really, but especially a child) is in a dangerous relationship, you don't just turn your back and say "oh well" because "it has to be her choice." I found it horrifying to watch this adult walk away from a child she knew was in trouble. I know it's just a game, but if this is supposed to be helping people, the point that you can't give up if someone you care about is in danger (even if it costs you the friendship with the person, and sometimes it will) needed to be included.

    I liked this. I didn't think I would like this when I started playing it-- I was worried it would focus too much on the educational aspects and getting the message across at the expense of the story, 'cause a lot of educational stuff does that-- but I really came to care about Grace and Natalie. The written parts needed a proofreader, but the review already mentioned that so it didn't bother me that much. The art and the style were good enough to make up for that. Natalie was so cute! And Grace was really relatable, and that made the game a lot more immersive.

    Two little things that bothered me, though. (spoilered to be safe, although I'm not really sure a spoiler tag is necessary).

    When talking about how Ken is controlling, Grace says something along the lines of "if you dressed like Paris Hilton, I'd agree with him [telling you to wear more clothes]". While the point here was that Ken obviously just wanted power over Natalie, women who dress provocatively can still be abused! I get that Grace isn't a professional and can't be expected to know everything about abusive relationships, but this could give someone the wrong message and it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

    Second, I thought the plug for Jennifer Ann was a little bit obvious. I don't know much about Jennifer Ann, and it's probably a fine organization that helps a lot of people, but seeing Grace bring it up by name was jarring and knocked me out of the story a little. It's a good thing to show people where they can get their questions about relationship abuse answered and get help, but maybe there could have been a better place to put this info?

    Criticisms aside, this was a really nice game.

    I'm a great fan of visual novels, and I loved this one! I got the bad ending the first try, and the good one on the second...

    During the game, I just sat there, reading everything through carefully. And I think everyone else who looks at this game should too. Sure, it's got a very simple gameplay, and there may be one or two spelling and grammatical errors, but I don't think it hinders any part of the message from coming through.

    By the way, if you still can't get the "Style Changed" after getting "Party" (like I did:

    You don't need "Party" to get "Style Changed". What you do need is to look at the tennis racquet in Grace's Room, where you can find located in the right side of the room.

    Just a few things --

    Yes, female abusers exist, and yes, they're generally brushed aside as being evidence of a wimpy man. Hardly -- I know a 6'4" guy whose ex broke his wrist. It's just as important to get these guys to help, too...but the overwhelming majority of domestic abuse is with a male perpetrator, so using this game as an example is a statistically accurate example.

    Jennifer Ann's Group sponsored the contest for the game design...so it's only fair that their group get the primary mention as a helpline.

    I realize that the main emphasis of the game is to reach abused girls and their friends...and I realize that the game designers are not native English speakers...but some of the grammar is so blatantly wrong that it distracts from the message. (I'm a teacher of English as a foreign language, so also acknowledge that it sticks out for me...but it isn't that hard to polish the grammar a little.)

    Hello everyone, Hima's here.

    Thank you so much for all the comments and critiques. I'm sorry about the grammatical errors and some typos in the game. I wish we had more time to work on the game, so we can properly edit all the mistakes we have done.

    Seeing that the mistakes shouldn't be left in the game, I'll try to find someone to edit it as soon as possible.

    As for other comments, I'm really glad that the message is delivered without making it seems forced or too educational.

    @Acidifiers
    Glad you enjoy it! I hope Ken isn't too evil! Was gonna make an ending that you can convince Ken to realize that he's being the abuser, but I couldn't do it and I think it won't be possible in one day( in game time).

    @Chris Weed, @bob
    Yes, the game is heavily influenced by Hotel Dusk. But this is also a tribute to Hotel Dusk and Cing, because while I was researching for Hotel Dusk art style and about rotoscoping animation, I found out that Cing, the company that created Hotel Dusk, went bankrupt soon after they released the sequel in Japanese. I hope the sequel get translated soon :)

    @Isabelle
    We were actually thinking of three abusive relationships after we have done research on the topic - girl abused by girl, guy abused by girl, and guy abused by guy. However, considering the time we have left, I think that would be too ambitious. Thus we decided to go with the one that happens most frequent. We hope that if people play this game and is interested to find more about the issue, eventually they'll learn that this does not happen to girls only but any genders.

    @InsanePenguin
    Thank you for pointing out the missing ending! To developers, nothing is better than seeing players trying to explore every secret in the game! :D

    @Wildbreeze
    We wish we had more time too! But I think it is suitable in itself already. Maybe next game!

    @Anon
    Thank you so much for taking your time and write the walkthrough. Also, sorry for the eating up so much memory! I think it's due to the size of the image.
    Also, I'm really appreciate your comment about the game. The dating violence in teenagers are something that people, including me before entering the contest, don't really pay attention to. I hope that at least this game will let the player know this thing does exist.

    @choirboy
    Glad to hear that! I'm not sure about being the deepest hehe but I hope some messages are delivered and apart from the fun, players will get something from this game.

    @tigrita

    I'm sorry about that ending. When I was writing that ending, I was thinking that it would be very hard to proof Ken's abusive behavior, if Natalie doesn't say it herself. Grace's mother thought about this and thought that what Grace has aren't decisive, so she decided that there is nothing they can do - for now.

    @After All

    Good points there. The Paris Hilton reference wasn't trying to say that women who dress provocatively cannot be or should be abused. But it probably can be read as that as well, so I'm sorry about that. As for the poster, I have no excuse. I'm sure I could better but oh well! X(

    @JustMe
    Again, I'm terribly sorry about the grammar. We will fix it as soon as possible.

    Lastly, I want to thanks Joye, for writing such a great review for this game. It means a lot to me. Thank you!

    Wow.. I'm suddenly having flashbacks.. this game awfully reminds me of a friend I have back in high school..

    Except that her college boyfriend acts completely normal, friendly, charismatic in front of us (her three closest friends)... But one day she confessed to us that he keeps on telling her not to hang out so much with us and he verbally abuses her through text messages saying how she's a b**ch for flirting so much with other boys even though she hardly talks to other boys much..... the worst was during our prom when she arrived really late and i saw scratches on her wrists and she said it was from slamming the car door which was completely impossible.. we tried telling her a couple of times before that she should leave him but she keeps saying that he just loves her..

    That much said, after HS we rarely saw her again.. and we never brought that subject up even though i still think he's still a jerk.. anyway the last time we saw her was 2 years ago and after that we could never contact her again.. jeez, this game made me feel like i never tried hard enough to help her... feeling so guilty right now.... i hope she's ok..

    Wow. That was..wow. I found everything on my own, which just strengthened the message to me. My thoughts on each ending:

    I CAN'T HELP HER & SHE HANGS UP:
    I'm an awful friend. I'm a moron. I shouldn't have called so soon. I HATE MYSELF! AAAAAUUUUUGGGGG!!! I'm so sorry, Natalie. Sorry I was too stupid to help you. So sorry...
    I HELP HER BUT DON'T GIVE HER THE NUMBER & SHE ENDS UP TAKING KEN BACK:
    Well, some of the fault IS mine...KEN! YOU DON'T DESERVE HER! GET AWAY FROM MY BEST FRIEND, YOU ^$#*@!!! AND YOU! MOM! YOU DIDN'T EVEN TRY TO HELP! YOU LEFT HER TO BE ABUSED! YOU IDIOT! "oh get back in the car, nothing we can do"! YEA RIGHT. GARRRGGH!
    I HELP HER & SHE LEAVES KEN:
    OH YEA! EAT THAT, KEN! YEA, GO BACK TO BARBIE AND PUT SOME MARKS ON HER WRISTS! W00TW00TW00TW00TW00TW00TW00T!!!! =D

    Any game that makes my thoughts switch over to capital letters most of the time is truly amazing. No complaints, well the grammar could use polishing. But that's not your fault, much better translation than on a lot of games! =D

    Thank you for your offer! However, Drew, the contest holder, has already finished editing the game script. I've already submitted the new version to him and it should replace this Engrish version as soon as possible ;) Still, I'm really glad that you offer to help. Thank you!

    I'm glad that "Grace's Diary" delivered you something that you didn't expect or use to. I hope the message is useful and hope you enjoy the experience in the game.

    I'm sure Phoenix Wright has influenced me a lot in my writing and scene directing, since I'm such a big fan of that game, hehe. (Played it since it was on GBA and played all of them again in both Japanese and English on NDS!) It was tempting to throw a psycho-lock in there though lol.

    I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. And please, don't feel that way! I'm sure you have tried but in real life it doesn't always end in happy ending like in the game. I hope the game give you hope that it is possible to help them. I wish you and your friend the best in the future.

    Hehe, glad to hear that you really enjoy the game! And to find everything on your own without using a walkthrough is really make me happy. As I've said earlier, any developers would be happy to hear that the players enjoy the game so much that they want to explore every aspect of the game. Thanks!

    Anyway, I've been doing iPhone programming lately, and thinking about porting the game to iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad. Let's see if I can pull it off. I'm sure the game would be great to play on those devices! (Maybe even android in the future, since it can run Flash)

    Hello Hima.
    Firstly, I'd like to say that the slight grammatical issues didn't bother me. I'm currently learning a new language, and it's HARD, so I'd like to congratulate you on your excellent translation.
    Secondly, this game really did move me. Personally, I think an ending where Natalie ends up hospitalised would have been more effective than the bad ending. I'm not saying I would like to see fictional people end up hurt, I just think it would put across a stronger message.
    I also think an iPhone version of Grace's Diary would be fabulous, as it would be more accessible and easily spread through groups of friends to raise awareness.
    Congratulations again on creating a wonderfully touching story.

    Yeah, this is a great game, so much better than the other games in this contest. Visual novels seem to be pretty great all the time; I played RE:Alistair++ and it was quite good, but hard. This is like an introduction to visual novels, and certainly more people should play it.

    The music is also in a game called Ai To Yuuki To Kashiwa Mochi.

    I wish there was an ending where he gets beaten up or goes to prison...
    Also, this actually happens, and makes it so much more terrible..

    My mother had an abusive father, she is still affected today.
    So people should really get help before it goes too far.

    The Walkthrough (With the real way to get to The Style, you dont have to have the party first.)

    The Style

    To get this one, you dont have to get Party first, but go to the second part of the room and click on the tennis rackets in the wall. Grace will remember about the wristband, THEN look at the picture above the bed.

    The Party

    To get this one, go to the second part of the room and look at the floor, then click on the paper closer to you, and Grace will remember the party.

    The Cellphone

    To get this one click on the cellphone and then "Not Yet".

    The Poster

    To get this one, first click on the computer in the first part of the room, then, go to the second part and click on the books below the poster.

    Did anyone else think the ending music was a bit too cheery for the game?
