JeremyEvoke.jpgSpot-the-difference games are a dime a dozen, but in the right hands they can be a work of art. Ronnie Pence's Evoke provides a surreal and artistic twist to the genre with ten different "planets" that offer dreamy mirror worlds in a state of subtle disarray. Luckily, you are there to bring balance back to the cosmos with the click of your mouse.

Each world gives you seven differences to find, with the option of skipping to the next once you've found four. Helpfully, there's a cursor opposite the screen that mirrors your movements, and the soothing ambient soundtrack by CBREEZ will make you want to put your feet up and lean back in your chair. Don't lean back too far! The game screen is too small at times and you may have to do some squinting to pick out the more subtle misplacements. While a "mute" and "skip level" button occasionally threaten to jar you awake from an otherwise perfect dream, the overall tone, artwork, and music make Evoke casual gameplay with a capital "C."

Good game, nice mix of big and small differences. But if you have a cruddy monitor, or problems distinguishing between very subtle changes in tone, I'd skip this one altogether unfortunately.

Hmm, ambiance is nice. Artwork is intriguing. But I have to agree with littleghost, unless you crave giving yourself a massive case of eyestrain, this game is not for you. And not the normal level of eyestrain you get from spot the difference games... this is more like from how extreme an angle can I view my monitor in order to pick up a ridiculously subtle difference in color kind of eyestrain.

Reply

Hmmm, one of the differences isn't being registered in level 2

The tire swing rope

Reply

Gabe,

Try clicking its mirror image on the opposite side. Sometimes it can be a little picky about which side you click.

Reply

Love the imagery, but some of the differences are just too subtle. Like crank-your-contrast-up-to-11-and-it-might-be-a-slightly-different-shade subtle. On one level I thought the Sound button which was just slightly visible against the background was the difference.

Reply

Nice one. I like the feature that you can skip the level when you only have 3 differences left to find.
I agree with Hippolyta: I've discovered quite some, really novel ways and angles to watch my monitor to find those really subtle differences ("My dear, what are you doing sitting on the floor staring at the screen of your desktop with your head tilted like that?"). So, there are some rather cruel differences hidden, but you've got the chance to skip them. Fair enough for me.

One small bug: as I inadvertantly discovered, the mute icon is in the same area of the image where the "Skip this level" button is on the other half. So, by attempting to mute the music to receive a phone call, I managed to skip the antelopes-level with one difference left, and having spent about five minutes in aforementioned position trying to find that one last difference...

I swear the "Skip Level" button was in front of the differences on more than one level. And, there was a difference that it didn't recognize for me too. I has a sad.

Reply

cendare,

I can guarantee you that there are no objects obscured by the Skip button in this game :) If you'd like to see where all the differences are located, have a look at the walkthrough above the comments.

Also, if the game is not recognizing when you're clicking the right area, try clicking its mirror image on the opposite side. As I mentioned earlier, this game can be kind of picky about clicking on the right side or hitting the pixel just right.

Too subtle for me. I gave up after realising I was clicking specks of dirt on my computer screen.

Mick

That is funny I did exactly the same:)

I really want to like this game, but the tonal differences are just too slight. I kept going to the walkthrough, and even when I knew where the differences were, I still couldn't see them.

If you have a crappy monitor or you do not want to blind yourself by brightening your screen you can always inverse the colors. On a mac control, option, command 8; on windows hmm the only way I know is to take a screen shot and invert the colors in paint.

It would have been nice if they did subtleties but in light colors or even medium instead of dark greys.

i think i gave this five stars just for including a stylized rendition of a plague doctor. i loved the illustrations; otoh, everyone here who says its superduper difficult to spot any differences is correct. deosnt matter how great a monitor you have nor how well it's calibrated. too bad cos this one's got way more interest than most of its species.
