Weekday Escape

GrinnypEvery week we search high and low to find the best escape game to give our readers a lovely mid-week escape from, well, whatever is stressing them out this particular week. Although it's nice to discover new designers and new talent, it is especially gratifying when one of the more popular designers weigh in with something new. Yes, 58 Works, creators of Cottage and Solitude have come up with a new, classic one room escape. Welcome to Escapers Final!

grinnyp_escapersfinal_screenshot.gifBlue arrows and bars allow you to move around the space and investigate all the nooks and crannies of this beautiful room. Unfortunately, there is no changing cursor, so there will be some pixel hunting involved. Double click on items in your inventory to examine them in close up, especially some items which can be combined or manipulated in different ways. There's no music, so no mute button. And no save feature, either. However, like all of 58 Works games, you should be able to logic your way out in a reasonable amount of time.

58 Works games may not be the most difficult escapes out there, but they are always unique, clever, and fun, and Escapers Final is no exception. Lots of amusing but not too tough puzzles, and a really enjoyable way to waste some time trying to find your way out of the proverbial locked room.

Analysis: What makes 58 Works games so good? A great combination of cool visuals, unique puzzles, and interesting locations, that's what. These games are not the toughest nuts to crack (I'm looking at you, Neutral) but have their own quirky charm that make them so much fun to play.

Graphically, the room is beautifully done up in white walls, screens, wood ceiling, tatami mats, and a friendly giant robot. Very Japanese. The only downside is that there is no music, as some traditional eastern music would fit in so very well with the atmosphere.

The puzzles are not terribly difficult, but have 58 Works' usual spin on the standard room escape gameplay. At least one puzzle is in color, so those with colorblindness might have a little difficulty. And of course, there's the pixel hunting, which can be annoying.

However, despite the annoyances, 58 Works room escapes are casual gameplay done right. Fun, distracting, logical, and quirky, this is the perfect mid-week escape. Put on your thinking caps and start escaping! And when you find your way out, definitely stick around for the closing credits with the friendly robot.

Yay Escapers Final Walkthrough!

Collecting items:

TV Scene:

Click on lower right of shelf for man piece.

Click on flowers on left for silver key.

Click on right square that sort of looks like a window for glass.

Fireplace Scene:

Click the bookshelves for the elephant piece.

Move the dotted picture on the mantel for the ant piece.

Robot Scene:

Click on yellow bit to right of robot for yellow card.

Door scene:

Click on plant and then behind on the left side for the brown box.

Remember that dotted picture? Use the dots to move the robot's arms in the correct order to collect the frog piece.

Using items:

Use the silver key on the door. Collect the small table.

Use small table to left of plant, step on it, and collect the remote.

Click on brown box in inventory several times to make a camera.

Fill the glass with water from the plant and put it on the fire to collect our favorite tool, the screwdriver!

Use the screwdriver on the screws to the left of the small table you put down. The panel is on the wall. Collect the gray screen.

If you use the screwdriver on the backs of the remote and the gray screen, you see that you only have enough batteries to operate one at a time, lets start with the screen.

Put the batteries into the screen and then place the yellow card on top of it. You can see that the arrows match up with the knobs on the panel to the left of the fireplace. Open it to get a panel with four squares.

Now we need the batteries in the remote. Once there, turn on the TV. Click the screen until you get four flashing dots. What could these be?

Use the camera to take a picture of the flashing dots.

Get the picture from the camera. It shows dots of varying sizes. These match up with the panel with the four squares.

Put the four pieces we have collected into the squares in the order of their size.

Top - Man
Right - Ant
Bottom - Elephant
Left - Frog

Collect the gold key, and use it on the panel to the right of the fireplace.

These squares allow for varying colors. But where to find the colors?

Turn the TV on and check the weather.

The colors are blue, red/gray, and white. The amount of clicks needed are 6, 3, and 0. Press the button and get the handle.

Take this handle and put it into the closet door you opened earlier. There is a spot for it on the left side.

Click it to rotate it, then back out and turn to the left to see your escape!

Goodluck!

  • Pull up the brown thing in close up.

  • While it is in close up, click on it twice.

  • Cool, a Polaroid camera! Close the camera back into the inventory.

  • Hey, there's a lot of water in that plant!

  • Use the empty glass on the water.

  • Back up.

  • There's something near the top of the alcove, to the left of the plant. Click on it.

  • Hmmm, okay, we can't reach yet.

  • Back up.

  • There's something on the left wall of the alcove, just to the right of the door. Click on it.

  • Well, we're not getting into that without a screwdriver. Back up.

  • Click on the door. Gee, it's locked, quelle surprise.

  • Let's try the key on the door.

  • Yay, it opens! Darn, it's a storage closet.

  • Take the stool out of the closet.

  • Hmmm, there's something on the left closet wall. Click on it for a close up.

  • Looks like something goes there. Oh well, back up.

  • Hey, maybe we can use the stool to see what's in that high alcove!

  • Place the stool under the high alcove.

  • Click on the high alcove for a close up.

  • Cool, an orange thing. Take it.

  • Pull up the orange thing from your inventory.

  • Okay, it looks like a remote. Click on it to turn it over.

  • Well, we can't open the battery case to see if it has batteries. Put the object back in your inventory.

  • Back up and turn left.

Robot Wall

  • Okay, a giant robot whose arms move. Fun.

  • Hey, there's something orange peeking out at the bottom of the screen on the right of the robot. Click on
    it.

  • Okay, now we have a card.

  • Turn left.

Fireplace Wall

  • Wow, there's lots here to look at.

  • Click on the books in the upper right alcove.

  • You'll notice a faint blue line between the last two books on the right. Click on it.

  • Cool, a blue tile with an elephant on it. Back up.

  • Click on the door beneath the books.

  • Darn, locked. Back up.

  • Click on the picture sitting on the mantel.

  • Nice, modern art. White dots in a pattern, I'm sure it means something.

  • Click on the picture to move it.

  • Take the revealed tile (ant) and back up.

  • Click on the door on the lower left.

  • Okay, dials. We can't open this right now. Back up.

  • You know, maybe there's something in the fireplace.

  • We do have this glass of water, after all.

  • Use the glass of water on the fireplace.

  • There's something red in there. Take it. Yay, the ubiquitous screwdriver!

  • Turn left twice.

Door Wall (redux)

  • Click on that panel area in the left of the alcove, just to the right of the door.

  • Use the screwdriver to open the panel.

  • Take the object in the cubby. Now you have a light box.

  • Pull up the remote from your inventory.

  • Turn the remote over and use the screwdriver on the battery case. Gee, only one battery. Take the
    battery.

  • Pull up the light box and turn it over.

  • Use the screwdriver on the battery case and place the one battery inside.

  • Now turn the box over and turn it on (the switch is at the bottom).

  • Place the orange card on the light box. Cool, arrows! The first one is to the right, the other three to the
    left.

  • Turn over the light box and use the screwdriver to remove the batteries.

  • Now pull up the remote and use the screwdriver to open the battery case. Place the batteries in the
    remote.

  • Back up and turn left.

Robot Wall (redux)

  • Oh yeah, the robot with the moving arms.

  • Where have we seen something that could tell us what to do?

  • How about the picture with the dots?

  • If you looked at the picture, notice that the dots are either to the right or to the left.

  • How about if we apply that to the robot arms?

  • Click on the robot arms in the same order as the dots in the picture, left, right, left, right, left, left, right.

  • The robot's chest should open if you did it right. Take the blue frog tile.

  • Turn right twice.

Television Wall (redux)

  • Click on the TV for a close up.

  • Use the remote on the TV. Test Pattern.

  • Use the remote again. Okay, now we have a blue umbrella in London, a red sun and gray clouds in Tokyo,
and a white snowman in New York.

  • Use the remote again. Scenic and beautiful, but does it mean anything?

  • Use the remote again. Wow, those dots are blinking too fast for the human eye to follow.

  • Hey, what if we took a picture of the screen?

  • Use the Polaroid camera on the flashing dots screen.

  • Pull up the Polaroid camera from your inventory and click on the picture sticking out of the front.

  • Okay, we have a still picture of the dots. Remember when reading a Polaroid that the bottom of the picture
is where the largest white area is.

  • So, looking at the picture we have four dots, the largest on the bottom, the next largest on the top, the next
largest on the left, and the smallest on the right.

  • Close the picture and back up.

  • Turn right.

Endgame

  • You should now be facing the fireplace.

  • Click on the door with the dials to the left of the fireplace.

  • The clue here is from the 58 works card and the light box.

  • Set the dials to match the arrows from the card as shown in the light box, the first dial to the right, the rest to the left.

  • Open the door.

  • Okay, this is a pattern not unlike the photo we took of the TV screen.

  • Four recesses, and we have four blue tiles.

  • Each tile has an animal on it, from small to large.

  • Let's place the tiles in the same size order as the photo.

  • Bottom: Elephant, Top: Man, Left: Frog, Right: Ant.

  • Yay, a key! Take the key and back up.

  • Now click on the locked door to the right of the fireplace.

  • Use the key on the door.

  • Great, another puzzle.

  • If you click on the three squares, you will notice that they change colors, first half then full color.

  • Remember the weather forecast from the TV?

  • Let's set the three squares to match the colors from the weather forecast.

  • Left button: blue (six clicks). Middle button: red/gray (three clicks). Right button white (no clicks).

  • Once the colors are set click on the red button on the door.

  • Okay, now we have a crank.

  • Where in the world can we use that?

  • Remember the utility closet?

  • Back up and turn right twice.

  • Open the door.

  • Click on the left wall of the closet for a close up.

  • Insert the crank into the square hole and click on it to turn.

  • Back up and turn left.

  • Awww, the nice robot is ushering you out.

  • Click on the great outdoors and enjoy the closing credits.

when searching for the blue tiles, I found the...

person, the elephant, and the ant.

Where is the other blue card that I am missing?

I think the robot may have been inspired by the Miyazaki anime movie, Castle in the Sky.

There's a photo of it here, if you haven't seen the movie: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicolacassa/3005838865/

Why are the escape games always Japanese? (with few exceptions). Some times clues and language can make or break these kinds of games, and for some reason dilike games with broken english. (and that includes non japanese games that have bad english.)

Oh well, just my 2 cents

Out, all by myself.

Not as hard as some others, but definitely enjoyable.

Wow, I did that one all by my lonesome!

That was fun. None of the puzzles were too out there, everything I had to find was pretty obvious, etc.

This game doesn't work for me on Mac with Firefox. I can only view about half the items in the inventory, which doesn't let me open the camera or use the screwdriver on the remote or anything else.

Reply

My Firefox works fine. Do you have the latest update, or are you making sure to click more than once for viewing objects and using them on other objects?

Also, I don't know if it's big enough, but someone may want to put an epilepsy warning on the TV.

waycooler March 3, 2010 1:50 PM

Whew out. That was short. Only needed help with finding the glass, which in retrospect I should've been able to find on my own. Heh.

Going by the series of pictures in the credits, then seeing Escapers FINAL for this one, the last one in the credits, makes me think that this is their last escape game. This makes me sad. :(

Reply

Wow I can't remember the last time I solved an escape game all on my own.

Satisfying! =D

to waycooler... be of good cheer!

the last line in the credits was "see you next series." i interpreted that to mean "we're gonna do this again."

nice puzzle! not too long, not too hard. unlike some escape games i couldn't imagine completing without a walkthrough. my advice: take your time, be patient, you can do this one without cheating.

Reply

That was a quick, fun escape. The only thing that was frustrating was

there was no indication that you needed a screwdriver to remove the batteries, and that you had to use a screwdriver to swap out the batteries. One extra step that wasn't needed.

I dunno Matt

Have you ever tried to prise tiny little batteries out of the back of a remote, calculator or some such device, with just your fingernails? :)

Thanks Grinny, for yet another lovely weekday diversion.

Surprisingly easy. One of the few room escapes I finished without a guide.

Escape games are my favorite type of game and I've done many, many of them. This one is easy to do on your own. But a lot of fun in my opinion. Good graphics, neat puzzles and a great flow. Me LIKE!

Reply

yes! it's totally like the robot from miyazaki's castle in the sky!

Reply

I could not get this game to work on a Mac using the newest version of Firefox 3.6. Half of the objects could not be viewed.

It worked perfectly fine using Safari 4.0.4.

Reply

I also find that I cannot examine items or use one on the other. Double clicking merely selects and deselects an item.
