GrinnypEscape from the Living RoomWhat is it with the Japanese? Every time I turn around they've locked me in a room. At least this one is furnished with a nice comfy couch. Oh look! A widescreen TV and a selection of DVDs. Great! Now, where's the remote...?

Escape From the Living Room, a new game by Japanese designer Tesshi-e, is a solid, entertaining room escape game. Simply point and click your way through an uncluttered yet beautifully rendered living room, packed with challenges.

There is no back story here, no note from a mad doctor, no urgent ticking clock. Just you and a comfortable living room. Bars at the edges of the screen make finding your way around quick and easy. A few important objects are rather small, but even my tired old eyes could spot them. While navigating through the room is itself relatively simple, solving some of the puzzles, especially the end solution, will take a bit of ingenuity. This is basic escape-the-room stuff; but what a lot of stuff! What in the world is that three-headed rotating totem for? That's for Tesshi-e to know and you to find out.

You'll spend most of your time in Escape From the Living Room collecting and using objects as you work towards the final solution. Not to say that there aren't any puzzles. There are indeed some tricky brain-teasers, but the answers to the more practical "How do I use that?" questions are what keep the game fun.

The puzzles themselves are logical and flow easily from one to another. The photorealistic backgrounds make you want to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Despite minimal decoration, the lush textures beg to be touched. The music... well, thankfully Tesshi-e has included a mute button.

My only quibble is the sometimes frustrating way the game handles your inventory. The problems begin after you select an acquired object, then hit the "about item" button for a close-up. Some items need to be opened, turned, and manipulated, and finding the "sweet spot" that will allow you to do this can be tricky, with no visual cues.

Qibbles aside, Escape From the Living Room makes for a fun, quick escape. Or you could just kick back on that inviting couch, relax, and watch some DVDs...

Wow. How does one not only be the first to post, but to post a full walkthrough at that?

Reply

Hehe, well, grinnyp reviewed the game, so she kinda knows how to finish it. :)

Plus, she had an idea it would be going up on the site tonight. ;)

Reply

Kewl! Trying not to use it just yet. But this game is a challenge. Which I like.

Reply

I'm having trouble with

getting the dvds into the dvd player

But I still like the game! ^_^

Reply

Yay grinnyp! Keep it up!

This is actually one of the few escape games I didn't need a walkthrough for. It's good to know my brain hasn't completely atrophied. Huzzah!

Reply

Anyone else having trouble loading? I'm stuck at 20% for the past 10 min.

Not bad, but not as good as some of the other recent escape games, I thought.

Did like -

the 2 puzzles

Didn't like -

That I didn't realise I could see the side of the cabinet with the clue, if I clicked on it from highest level view, but not lower level view. Better if I could do this from both views

That I didn't realise I had to click on the table drawer several times for it to fall out - I tried it several times, but not enough. Better for it to happen the 2nd or 3rd time, rather than 6th or whatever it is

overly-complicated assembly of items at the end - ended up clicking everything with everything

My criticism is only because I'd like the author to make more (better) games!. The bar has been set very high by the likes of 58 works (#07ML, the cottage).

Reply

Hmm. I did it on my own but it took me a long while. All in all, it was just okay. Look, I don't mind a red herring here and there. But...

The 15 DVD's really irritated me. Selecting and inserting each and every one when only 6 were relevant. Okay, 2 of the remaining 9 were false clues to throw you off on the heart puzzle. But the rest were just rubbish. Credits? Good luck? Thank you? Come ON!

By the time I got to the final puzzle...

It was just mindlessly clicking everything in the inventory over and over with no sense of purpose.

Not a bad game by any means. But certainly not a good one.

Yeah. The art is pretty. I was kind of annoyed by the constant cursor alteration (mine kept flipping between an arrow and a hand randomly). Overall, I think it was an okay game. Granted, my main hang-up was my own fault...

... It didn't occur to me that the numbers for the hearts were rotational degrees. Duh!

However, after I peeked at the walk-through for the above, there was some random clicking...

... Like clicking the little drawer repeatedly. I can't stand it when authors pick a random item to do this with and make it an inordinate amount of clicks.

And more random clicking...

... Constructing the car was a pain, even after I got fed up with it and looked at the walk-through again.

All things being considered, I wish things were just a bit more intuitive. Design and minor annoying hit-boxes aside, great job on the rest of the development!

I'm sorry, but I really don't think this game is good enough to be featured on JiG.

It doesn't look brilliant, the interface is annoying, and the "music" makes me want to commit random violent acts. At least the puzzles are reasonably logical, although nothing out of the ordinary.

I appreciate that there are about a million of these escape games out there, and the vast majority are probably worse than this one, but still...

I really liked everything about this game......except for the DVD part. That was, well, awful! Like Bad Dog said, there was really no need for THAT many.

So, the walkthrough says to combine your two

straw halves

with two

sticks

in the end to

make the axles

and I have two

straw bits

but only one

stick.

The Walkthrough only tells you where to get one of them. Help?

Thank you, grinnyp. :)

Am I the only one thinking that it would just be a whole lot easier to move the couch out of the way?

Reply

why not just move the couch and grab the key? :)

Reply

it's kind of silly that all you really need to do (in theory) is

move the couch to get the door key

Did anyone else notice the UFO in each picture on the picture wall? It's only about 3 to 6 pixels big and seen most clearly above the castle.

Reply

@AlexOB6: i saw the ufo's too, wonder what they're supposed to be. i tried clicking them so many times XD

I strongly think it would do Jayisgames good to stop dealing wiith Japanese room escapers for a while - or restrict to the really good or innovative ones. I guess there's at least one new game of this genre coming out from Japan per day - and the very vast majority of them is just the same. and it means there's no real sense of triumph beating them, hence no real sense of challenge either - not because they are easy to beat, but because you can't hep having a deja vu feeling every time you start one. Been there, done that. It's not their fault - it's not anyone's fault - well, in fact it is not a "fault" - it's just too many games that feel the same. I guess there are room escapers from other countries as well and that would surley be a welcome diversion from the Japanese line.

Reply

I wasn't fan of this one, mainly because of the final puzzle-it was a little TOO far-fetched for me. There are far simpler things one could do with the given inventory items.

Maybe if there was some sort of clue that hinted at exactly what you were supposed to be building.

Not really impressed, and feeling somewhat misled by the gushing review. What I just suffered through was a maddening trial-and-error with manipulating items and clicking hotspots. Just let me add one item to another, is that so hard to do?
The final puzzle was ridiculous in every sense of the word. Ugh.

i think that the car part was brilliant :P but i have to admit that i could not escape without the walktrough(for the pictures/dvds)

Reply

With the right picture I only can get the lower left to move, but when you try to go out and start over it won't allow you to. Help.

Reply

At the key under the couch, can't seem to get the car in the scene of the screen to get the key. Help.

Reply

I figured out what I did wrong, didn't put tape on the car. Finally finish, on to the next game.

grinnyp,

Thank you for the screenshots. That helped a lot.

Reply

grinnyp, Thank you for the Walkthrough! But... where's the string? I can't find it!

Help Please..
I can't get the key out of the base of the totem! Help me. How?
[Edit by Kayleigh]

Reply

That was just obscure with some completely arbitrary and well silly puzzles. Still fun I suppose.

Reply

To get the happy coin ending:

After you have obtained the key from under the couch, look at the end of flashlight and use the key on the hole. Grab the coin from the end of the flashlight, then exit using the key on the door.

AAA! BWAA! I just wanna tear my hair out!!! The site's in japanese and I don't know what link to click on to get to the game!!!! SO FRUSTRATING!!!!

I know this TESSHI-e game is old and not of great interest these days, but the February 25, 2010 JIGuest comment is right--there is indeed a happy coin ending for this game, for what it's worth. That seems to have been missed in the walkthrough, and none of the other comments have noted it. Perhaps it was added later, or perhaps everyone just missed it--I'm sure it was easy to miss.

I have trouble just loading the game, even when the page is translated. Could someone tell me how to do this? I seem to have this problem any time I load these types of games...

Reply

Oookay. I thought I was going to be able to do that on my own, but I didn't quite get it. The stuff with the big numbers, I guess. Anyway, it was good, I just didn't quite have the capacity to follow all those DVDs.

"Grandfather's Clock" was not meant to be repeated that many times...
I will not be able to listen to that song for a LONG time.
