Weekday Escape

GrinnypOkay, so a friend phones you up and says, "Hey, I have this great new place, you should see it! Big, beautiful windows that let in a lot of natural light, high ceilings, everything you'd want in a residence." So you go over and yes, cool place, but then your friend locks you in. In the real world, you would probably just pick up the nearest expensive object and send it sailing through one of those stunning floor-to-ceiling windows and wander out, probably punching your former friend along the way, permanently destroying the friendship. However, this is the world of Tesshi-e, so instead of wanton destruction it is time to Escape from the Big Windows Room.

Escape from the Big Windows RoomTesshi-e room escape games are getting better and better with each iteration. Like Escape from the Rest House before it, Escape from the Big Windows Room is mostly in English, so at least you know what's going on. And at least this time you've not just wandered into somebody's house blindly. No, this time you are lured there. With friends like that, who needs enemies?

Once again Tesshi-e brings us a delightful little confection, a classic room escape. Simpler than some of the games previous, Escape from the Big Windows Room still has just about everything you'd want in an escape game. Easy navigation bars on the side of the screen, a simple, uncluttered space, accessible inventory, a mute and save button, almost everything. Now all we need is someone who can write Japanese to e-mail Tesshi-e about changing cursors, and we'd be all set.

Tesshi-e has really gone all out on the backgrounds this time. The space is frankly so stunningly gorgeous your first thought might not be escaping so much as trying to figure out how to steal the lease/mortgage out from under your so-called friend. You know, the one who likes locking you into confined spaces. It would have been nice, however, if a little more attention had been paid to the puzzles. Not that this is a bad escape, and the puzzles are all logical and flow from one to another, but this is an example of "Tesshi-e light". Pretty basic, and easily gotten out of, even with the usual alternate "happy coin" escape.

Despite a bit of pixel hunting and the lack of a changing cursor, though, Escape from the Big Windows Room is definitely a great break for the mid-week, a fun pick-me-up to get you out of the doldrums. And perhaps even dream of maybe someday being able to afford to live in such a fantastic space. Hey, even in this economy, a person can dream.

  • On the bottom shelf on the left are two wine glasses with an object behind them. Click on the object to take it (wine bottle).

  • No time for drinking!

  • Notice the cups on the bottom shelf that spell out NOW with an arrow pointing down.

  • On the next shelf up are 5 cups and saucers. Notice the blue object behind one of the cups? Take the object (candle).

  • There are three small drawers between the glass doored top cabinet and the wooden doored bottom cabinet.

  • Click on the left drawer for a close up. Looks like we need a key!

  • Use the circle key on the drawer and take the matchbox.

  • Back up once then click on the center drawer for a close up.

  • Looks like we need a four digit code here. Back up once.

  • Now click on the right drawer for a close up.

  • Looks like we need another four digit code, but this one has a clue! RAC + a star.

  • Back up twice.

  • Click on the couch for a close up.

  • Click on the couch again for a closer close up, and click on each cushion to raise it up. There's something underneath the left cushion, take it (red ball).

  • Back up once, then click on the right side of the glass coffee table for a close up.

  • Looks like we have a red ashtray sitting on top of something beige. Click on the ashtray to lift it up.

  • There's a star underneath the ashtray!

  • While the ashtray is elevated, click on it to turn it over and note the number 55 on the bottom.

  • Back up once.

  • There's an object to the right of the couch that looks like an end table married to a trash can. Click on it for a close up.

  • Is that a trashcan? A magazine rack? Whatever, there's something in it. Click and hold down and you will see that it is a book with the word "apple" in red on the cover.

  • Back up twice and turn left.

  • You are now facing a wall with a low credenza, a long, narrow window and a clock. Click on the clock for a close up.

  • Okay, it's 2:47, I guess that's good to know. Back up.

  • Click on the credenza for a close up.

  • There are three objects on the credenza. From left to right: some sort of cylinder with something blue inside, a wooden hippopotamus, and a radio.

  • Click on the cylinder for a close up.

  • Looks like there's a blue ball inside, just like the red and yellow ones we already have. We can't get into the cylinder right now, so back up.

  • Click on the wooden hippopotamus for a close up.

  • We apparently need a 7 letter code here, which we don't have. Back up.

  • Click on the radio for a close up.

  • Hmmm, the knobs don't turn, but there is a keyhole here. Is it a fake radio?

  • The circle key doesn't work on the radio, so back up twice and turn left.

  • You are now facing the lovely windows, with a patio beyond.

  • Click on the right window (you can see patio furniture through this one) for a close up.

  • Other than the word "tree" written in green, there's nothing much to see here. Back up.

  • Now click on the left window for a close up.

  • Nice car! Nice car with a license plate that reads 5736. A clue!

  • Nothing else to do here, so back up and turn left.

  • Let's solve some puzzles, shall we?

Shelves: Lampshade

  • You should now be facing the door.

  • Click on the shelves between the door and the bed for a close up.

  • Click on the shade on the top shelf for a close up.

  • Click on the shade to lift it. This is where we found the yellow ball earlier.

  • Maybe if we introduced a little light into the situation?

    • Pull up the candle from your inventory.

    • Use the matches on the candle to light it.

    • Put the lit candle onto the black base where the yellow ball was.

    • Click on the shade to bring it down and note the word "welcome" has now appeared. A clue!

  • Once you've figured out the shade back up twice and turn left.

Cabinet: Middle Drawer

  • Click on the cabinet for a close up, then click on the middle drawer for a closer close up.

  • We need a four digit number here. We saw one earlier, but is it the right one?

  • There's another clue we need to think about, the one we saw on the cups in the glass-fronted cabinet above.

  • Remember the cups that said "now" and had an arrow pointing downward?

    • Now refers to the time, which we know from seeing the clock on the wall above the credenza. The time is 2:47.

    • But this is a 4 digit code!

    • However, this is a Japanese game designer, and in Japan they tend to use "International Time" or what we would call "Military Time".

    • In military time, 2:47 could either be 2:47 in the morning, but this is doubtful due to the sunlight streaming through the windows, or it could be 2:47 pm, which is 14:47 in military time.

    • Therefore your four digit code is 1447.

  • Enter the 4 digit code into the drawer and click on the drawer to open it.

  • Take the spade key and note the word "cloud" in white at the back of the drawer.

  • Back up once.

Cabinet: Right Drawer

  • Click on the right cabinet drawer for a close up.

  • Another 4 digit code needed, this time with a clue.

  • The clue reads RAC + star.

  • Hmmm, maybe we need to think about this in an entirely different direction?

  • Where have we seen a 4 digit number?

  • Where have we seen a star?

    • There's a 4 digit number on the license plate of the car outside, 5736.

    • We saw the star underneath the ashtray on the coffee table, and there was a 55 underneath the ashtray as well.

    • Add that together and you get 5791, which is not the code.

    • You might notice that RAC is car spelled backwards.

    • So the car code backwards is 6375.

    • Add that to 55 and you get 6430, which is the code to the drawer.

  • Enter the code into the drawer and click on the drawer to open it.

  • Take the corkscrew, back up twice and turn left.

Credenza: Cylinder

  • Click on the credenza for a close up.

  • Click on the cylinder on the left for a close up.

  • Notice the blue ball in the cylinder?

  • Perhaps we need to get that out?

  • Well, we don't have a wrench to remove the bolts at the bottom, so what can we do?

  • Did you notice that the top of the cylinder is open?

  • Is this puzzle making you thirsty?

    • Perhaps we could float the ball to the top?

    • Pull up the bottle of wine from your inventory.

    • Use the corkscrew on the wine.

    • Use the wine on the cylinder and the ball will float to the top.

  • Take the blue ball and back up once.

Credenza: Hippopotamus

  • Click on the wooden hippopotamus in the middle of the top of the credenza for a close up.

  • We've seen this many times before in Tesshi-e games, we need to open the hippopotamus.

  • And it looks like we need a 7 letter code.

  • Here's a hint: let there be light!

    • Remember the lamp shade over on the shelves by the door?

    • Remember the word that appeared when we put the lit candle inside?

    • Welcome is a 7 letter word.

  • Enter the code into the hippopotamus and click on its mouth.

  • Take the coin (not the happy coin) and back up.

Credenza: Radio

  • Click on the radio on the right for a close up.

  • Remember, there's a keyhole here.

  • Use the spade key on the keyhole and take the green ball.

  • Back up twice and turn right twice.

Gumball Machine

  • You should now be facing the door.

  • Click on the shelves to the right of the door for a close up.

  • Click on the gumball machine on the bottom shelf on the left for a close up.

  • Remember, it needs a coin.

  • Use the coin from the hippopotamus in the coin slot and click on the handle.

  • Take the gold ball and click on it to open it.

  • Remove the white ball from inside.

  • Notice the word "sea" in blue on the wall.

  • Back up twice.

Regular Escape

  • We now have all the clues needed to escape.

  • Remember the credenza with its lovely pictures?

  • Remember the words we've found scattered around the room in various colors?

  • Is it a coincidence that those colors match the balls we've found?

  • Remember that pedestal we found in the bottom cabinet?

  • Turn left to face the cabinet.

  • Click on the bottom of the cabinet to open the wood doors.

    • The colored balls match the colors of the words scattered around the room, and the words match the pictures on the credenza.

    • Therefore, you will need to place the balls in the order of the pictures, which is apples (red), cloud (white), tree (green), sea (blue), and sunflower (yellow).

    • For the colorblind: Your inventory has the five balls, two on the top row and three on the bottom.

    • On the top, from left to right, are the white and blue balls.

    • On the bottom, from left to right, are red, green, and yellow.

    • Place the balls on the pedestal in this order: bottom left ball, top left ball, bottom middle ball, top right ball, and bottom right ball.

  • When all of the balls are placed a key will appear underneath the pedestal. Take it (heart key).

  • Back up twice and turn right.

  • Click on the door for a close up, use the heart key on the door, and escape!

  • Enjoy the cake!

Happy Coin Escape

  • Follow the regular escape up until you get the heart key.

  • The heart key is usually the one to get you out in the Tesshi-e escapes, but we need to find the happy coin first!

  • Maybe there's a clue in the room we missed?

  • No, looks like we used all the clues in the room.

  • Perhaps we'd better examine the objects in our inventory more closely?

    • Pull up the heart key and click on it to turn it over.

    • Hey, there's some writing on the key! It says "getcoin".

    • Well, that's what we're trying to do!

    • How does this help?

    • Hey, "getcoin" has 7 letters in it.

      • Turn left until you are facing the credenza, then click on the hippopotamus for a close up.

      • Enter the new code, "getcoin" into the hippopotamus and click on his mouth.

      • Take the happy coin and back up twice.

  • Once you get the happy coin, turn until you are facing the door.

  • Click on the door for a close up, then use the heart key on the door to unlock it.

  • Click on the open door to escape and enjoy a fine meal and wine!

  • Happy Coin will bring happiness to you!!

Stuck. I think only step before I am able escape.

What should RAC mean? star is sure 55 but RAC doesn't seam to be licence plate. I need corkscrew which should be in the only unaccesed drawer.

Why do I love to torture myself like this? I think there are only two more things I need to work out:

the hippo puzzle and the gumball-type machine.

I can't for the life of me think what the

clue would be for the hippo

and I assume I need to find a

coin to get whatever I need from the gumball machine.

Argh.

WOW! This is the first Tesshie-e game that I haven't needed a walkthrough! Guess I'm finally getting the hang of it!

@masozravapalma

You're right, 55RAC isn't the licence plate! But you have seen a licence plate somewhere, right? RAC backwards is CAR so read the licence plate backwards and add it to 55 to open the drawer.

LOL, I know, I have been staring at everything in the room, my mind must be too tired to let anything click. I've stared at the clock, I thought maybe it was the answer for the

And thank you Jim_in_Oz for the clue, I'll be taking this one on again tomorrow. First time I have ever been too tired for an escape game.

I'm more impressed with their games all the time, but I'm more disturbed by the ads that run on the sides.

I don't know if it's my computer or browser just my brain this evening or what, but I cannot find the link to start the game. Can anyone give me a clue as to where it is on the linked page?

Yay, made it out with no walkthrough!

Did have to get some help finding the Happy Coin, though. ^_^;

Fine game!!! Only had some trouble with the "RAC+*" code.
But I do not agree with the not uncommon request for a changing cursor, it feels halfway like a bit of cheating.

I love this designer's games, but I prefer finding/combining/using items to deciphering number/clue combinations. I waited until GrinnyP posted her walkthrough before attempting this one ... and good thing I did, because I needed 4 or 5 clues to get through it!

Thanks again, GrinnyP!

Thats the first one of these I've managed to solve without needing to peek at the walkthrough. No happy coin, but I'll settle for getting out :D
