JessEscape DayEscape Day is absolutely adorable. You star as some kind of... cat/fox/puppy guy who has, as the game's intro nicely explains, been lured into, then trapped inside, a kitchen! A really cute kitchen, but still. The game is very well-rendered, quite polished in its own cartoony way, and from what I've seen so far has some nice puzzling. In fact, it would be definitely full review-worthy if not for...the dreaded language barrier! That's right, everything is in Japanese, and it does sadly seem that understanding the text would be quite helpful.

Escape Day is still solvable, but because of the barrier will probably require a considerable amount of trial and error and experimentation. If you're willing and able to be patient, however, you'll be rewarded with a very well-crafted, smart, entertaining escape game.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

This is my first walkthrough, so don't judge it to harshly.
Walkthrough:

  1. click on the box of lemons to take some.

  2. Turn left. Look at the empty box and get aluminum foil.

  3. check the leftmost ovan to get a book. Check the rightmost oven to get a piece of paper. Check the big gray thing and find cheese.

  4. Turn left twice. Look in the unlocked drawer for a fork.

  5. Turn right. Look at the picture on the wall. click left, right, left to make it fall. Zoom out, and click on the fallen picture again. Click the left side to turn it over. Use the fork to get the other piece of paper.

  6. Go to the first scene and click the switch next to the door to turn out the lights. Go right. Click the white thing between the pots. Go back. Turn the lights on. Go and click on the place where the white thing was to get for golden rectangles.

  7. Interacting with the objects.
Note:"Look at an item" means click it, then hit about item.

  8. Look at a paper.(It doesn't matter which one)click on the other one and put them together. Go to the screen with the boxes, and click on the papers and the light.

    KITCHEN (caps are important)

  9. Look at the book. Keep clicking on the right until you've closed the book and are looking at the back cover. There's a rectangle at the bottom. Click it to get a card.

  10. Go left. Look at the cheese, then attach the fork. Click the oven on the left, then the gray thing coming out of the wall. Turn the nozzle and zoom out. Zoom in on the gas burners on top. Click the yellow nob. Click the cheese, then the blue flame. Take the fork off the cheese when you have melted cheese.

  11. Go right next to the open box is a mouse hole. Zoom in and leave the cheese. Then leave and come back. The mouse is eating the cheese. Take the gray key sticking out of the hole, then leave.

  12. Go left twice. click on the computer. Click the button to turn it on, then click the lower file. Insert

    KITCHEN (caps count!)

then look at the file. You probably can't read it, but the game won't let you finish if you haven't looked at it.

  13. Go left. Use the key on the locked drawer and get the cords. Click on the lemons, then the knife on the cutting board.

  14. Zoom in on the four cups. put the lemons in the cups. Look at the aluminum foil and take a piece. Look at the foil piece, then put the golden blocks on them. You should get blocks like the gold ones, only silver.

  15. Put in the lemons the gold blocks, silver blocks, and the cords. Zoom out.

  16. Open the fridge, and get the animal cards. Go right and click where the picture was on the wall. Put the animals there.
I'm borrowing what Bramble wrote because I can't read Japanese and I don't know where to find a translator that my annoying computer will accept.
    Clues for the animal order

it is indeed a logic puzzle, the clues are as follows:

    • Shiro is not at the end.

    • First is between George and Shiro.

    • Sakura is at the end.

    • Bird is at one of the 3 spaces from the left.

    • George is not at the end nor is he next to Dan-San.

    • Sakura is next to Hakase

    • There are more than 2 spaces between Hakase & Shiro

    • George is not next to Hakase

    But who is who ;)
    k I'll attempt description
Bird is the easy one - can you guess ;)
    Hakase wears glasses
Sakura wears a pretty pink bow
First is the hero of the piece- light brown dog
George is the dark brown dog
Shiro is the all white dog
Dan-san wears a funky green bandana

  17. If you really can't be bothered enjoying the fun of the logic puzzle

  18. Order is from left to right
    Sakura(pink bow), Hakase(glasses), Bird(bird), George(dark dog), First(light dog), Shiro(white dog), Dan-san(green bandana dog)

  19. Open the box and get the flashlight. Go left twice. Look at the flashlight, turn it on, then put it on the square with writing. Turn out the light and look at where the flashlight's light is resting. Mark this 3x3 square down.

  20. Go back, turn on the light, get your flashlight. Look at the keypad next to the door. Fill it in like the square. Zoom out and click on the door. Leave.

  21. For the Normal Ending, go forward one more time. But for the Special Ending, shine your flashlight into the garbage can and get the paper. put it in the back of your book where there's a ripped page.

  22. Look at the page compared to the dots on the previous page. you end up with roman numerals

    V I IX IV, or 5194.

  23. Go back inside and to the red double doors. Slide your card from the back of the book. Enter

    5194

Go through the red doors and you're out.

Hooray!

arg... i really wish i knew japanese...

i've gotten pretty far, though. but now i'm stuck with

the lemons stuck into the cups. i've got the alligator clips and the aluminum foil pieces but i can't do anything. i've also got the fork, book, plastic card thing, and the two pieces of paper stuck together. i'm pretty sure i need to complete the circuit, but i don't know how to from here. and i think the second file on the computer has info on how to do it. too bad i can't read it!!

since it would appear that nobody else has tried/gotten stuck/asked for help yet, then it looks like i have to wait... hopefully i'll have gotten help by tomorrow morning...

waycooler July 16, 2008 6:06 AM

oh and sorry about the possible double post but Jay or any other informed-type person, would you mind explaining how to do the bullet points inside the spoiler thingy? thanks

Reply

@waycooler:

to finish the lemon circuit you need to find the other set of electrodes. Turn off the lights and turn to the scene with the refrigerator, notice the shine coming from a point on the board with the jars, click on it, then turn on the lights and go back to that point, you should find what you are looking for.

I really wish I knew Japanese for this, one of the puzzles felt useless because solving it did nothing for me...

Mm... I'm stuck too.

What use is the sheet of paper with "IIICIIII" written on it? And where do I find the combination to open the red double doors? And how come I can't do anything with the cups even though I have both sets of electrodes, sliced lemons, and wires?

Reply
waycooler July 16, 2008 7:13 AM

@GeFe:
Thanks for the help... i never thought to go back after already clicking it...

@SonicLover:

You need to find the other piece of paper. have you got the cheese and fork? use the stove. you have to turn it on... oh, turn on the gas first. by the bottom left oven door. there you go. now melt the cheese. oh it's hot. maybe you should put it on the fork first. now give it to the mouse. at the mousehole, dummy. by the open box. now you got the other paper. put it with the other one and... two pieces of paper... try putting them up to the light. ooh a code. have you checked the computer? turn it on first. then click the second file. put in the code, all caps. now you should be able to complete the circuit.

my thoughts are that you need to know how to make a lemon circuit before being able to do it. so the computer tells you how. but in japanese...

Patreon Crew SonicLover July 16, 2008 7:18 AM

Got past that. Thanks.

Now I'm trying to decipher the code on the orange lockbox behind the picture. I tried putting the characters in the order they're mentioned in the blue book, but that didn't work...

lemons? aligator clip? plastic card? pieces of paper?!!! :?

Reply
stupidcheeseboy July 16, 2008 7:29 AM

I got the key to the drawer from the mouse not a piece of paper

Reply

Actually, you need to rock the picture of the dog chef and make it fall, start with the upper left corner, then the upper right. when it falls zoom out from that view and zoom on the picture on the floor. Turn it around and open the compartment on the back with the fork and you should find the second paper

Reply
Bramble July 16, 2008 8:11 AM

I reckon the messages in the blue book are some kind of logic clues to the order of the animal symbols on the orange box - probably something like the white dog dosent sit next to the bird or the brown dog etc- from which we can deduce the order- pretty impossible if we cant read the text though. Going to look for help translating I suppose

Corky46 July 16, 2008 8:41 AM

Okay, I can't even separate the little animal pictures. WTF? Got the circuit done and opened the fridge, but now what?

also

this game has two endings which seems to be all the rage thes days for escapes, I have completed both, I started to do a walkthrough but am not good with making sence when writing alot so I will just try to answer questions as the come if I can

Plastic card

back of the book, keep flicking to it, look very closely

This is REALLY cute, but seems to be a serious pixel hunt. Even following clues, I can't find many of the things people are talking about. Sigh.

Reply

I'm stuck.. can somebody help me??
I have:

note with IIICIIII, fork, cables, four pieces of aluminium, a book, a card

Reply

some quick hints on some items as i need to go now

cheese in a pan on cooker

second paper clue behind picture on the wall, knock it down click top left right left, click it on floor click it on left side to turn over - use fork on rectangle - get paper

turn off lights go to fridge screen see little light glinting on top shelf - you must click it , turn light back on return to fridge screen click where you saw light to receive gold electrodes i think they are

combine two paper clues highlight and click on light on boxes screen to reveal password for pc- you must read the file on the pc before you can use the lemons and electrical things to open the fridge
foil- in open box on boxes screen;
use fork on cheese cook it- to turn on cooker zoom in to leftmost oven and click metal thing on left side to zoom in to gas tap - turn on then click out now click just above that same oven to zoom in on nob turn it on and we have fire.
cut lemons- highlight lemons and click knife/chop board
sorry it's so piecemeal, typing in a rush ;)

got to go - wish you all luck it is a fun one except for language problems.
ps I can't think of any part I'd describe as a pixel hunt, mechanics wise its good, its just that you must do certain things in the correct order in a couple of places.

[Edit: Corrected. -Pam]

Reply

I found for the paper that if you

combine both pieces (IIICIIII and the other one) and then

hold them up to the light bulb in one of the areas you find it reads "kitchen".

Reply

Go to the left of the kitchen and you find a tile with something on (ckicking enlarges).

Reply

So, I made it all the way through to the end and it said

"Normal Ending" then said "Special Ending" with something written Japanese. I'm thinking that you have to open the double doors to get to the special ending but I don't know what the four number code is for the double door. Has anyone else been able to find it?

Reply
ThemePark July 16, 2008 12:11 PM

Special Ending:

Once you're in the room with the garbage bins, use the flash light and look inside them. You'll find a piece of torn paper.

Put the paper inside the book, and flip from that page to the previous page. There are some odd black dots.

Now I don't know if you can actually cut out the dots, but imagine that you can. Then the letters shown from the page are roman numerals and thus the code is 5194.

Use the credit card on the other kitchen door, type in the code and presto!

Reply

Just a note:
You get the wires from

the locked drawer.

keys are from the mouse that comes out of the hole by the boxes and you get it out by

pulling cheese off fork first then putting it on floor (cheese needs to be cooked on stove first).

Reply

So now I found the

code in the garbage can outside but it still won't let me open the double doors!

Help!

I'm stuck! Almost finished I think because I only have one empty space left in inventory.

What is with the flashlight? (thanks for the help on the order of the puppies and bird.) I got the flashlight after solving the order of the puppies puzzle. Now I have placed the flashlight on the tile floor because it said "Put it here" so I did. I made sure that I turned the flashlight on before I put it there. I turned the light switch off by the door and went to the left screen and the beam of light has a 3 x 3 square of wall tile lit up. But no amount of clicking and cursing makes anything happen??? --- help?

Reply

Oh now I see....

3x3 square area looks familiar. The door with the light switch has a key pad - yep... 3x3 ... follow the pattern. Then pick up the flash light you will need it in one of the garbage cans when you go through the open door. If you click the up arrow on this screen, I think it will finish the game. But not sure.

How come the 4 digit code on the third piece of paper does not work on the double doors???

I got the third piece of paper with the numbers seven nine six five. but 7965 does not work nor does 6597. Nor does counting the letters of each number such as seven has 5 letters etc. So 5434 does not work either.

I'M STUCK!

Reply

Sorry, PoP (Power of Posting)
I was close...

It does have something to do with the "letters" of the numbers seven nine six five. Remember the blue book? Remember the last page is tore out? And the page before it has 4 big ink blots? Put the third piece of paper you found where the tore out place is. Then flip the other page with the ink blots on to the newly attached page. (I'm a librarian and sure wish we could repair our books this way) Anyway, you are supposed to miraculously see through the ink blots to the newly attached page:

Reply

Works for me in Opera (9.22) Mac, and Opera (9.25 and 9.51) on Windows.

If you reload the page and try again do you still get the problem? When I first published this very early this morning, I made an error with the URL that didn't include the hyphen. Maybe you just still have an older page cached? Opera is a little more aggressive with caching pages than the other browsers I've noticed.

I just finished this game but I have a question:
When I got

outside by the trash cans

I found

the area to the left (by the boxes of potatoes) can be zoomed into.

Any idea why or is this maybe just a false clue?

thank you so much for the walkthrough!!! i'm such a cheater, but i couldnt have done it without the walkthrough!!p.s. cute characters!!!

Reply

i can't figure out how to "leave the cheese" by the mouse hole. lol

Reply

For the cheese you have to

put the cheese on the fork and then melt it on the stove. When you take it off of the fork you can then put it down for the mouse to eat.

Also, I had trouble with the animal puzzle because

it says that Sakura is last, and when I saw last I thought of left to right. So last would be the right square not the left.

OHOHOH!! i found something really cool! and could someone please add it to the walkthrough or everyone'll miss the fun! in the fridge,

there are the animal pictures..but there's also another piece of paper..the japanese says to stare at the left box for 10 seconds, then look at the white box..

you're supposed to see

three rows of colurs in the order: blue white red

SO COOL!!! and i think that's a clue for the next task..so yay!
