JessEscape 02: Who Am I?Escape 02-Who Am I? is really a rather nice-looking game, with well-created graphics in muted colors (I especially like the strange, oddly cute light bulb-headed statues that are scattered around the room). Your task is straightforward: examine everything, solve the puzzles, escape the room. There is one twist, however; scattered around the room are "about you" cards, each of which provide a clue as to who (or what?) the player really is. The answer will ultimately become central to your success.

I quite liked Escape 02: Who Am I? The puzzles are on the whole quite clever, and the identity crisis shtick was a nice, creative touch. I do have a few gripes, however. At least one of the puzzles is very unintuitive; once solved the answer makes perfect sense, but it was difficult for me to make the necessary logical leap. The game also requires you to collect a "bag" before you can carry more than two items in your inventory, which seemed unrealistic considering that the player is inside a locked room. Finally, the English translation from the Japanese is pretty terrible, though generally adequate enough to get the point. Still, at least to me, the strengths outweigh the liabilities, and I definitely recommend that you give it a shot.

OK...

For those who have a bag problem:

Go to the Chest of Drawers

There's a pink box on top

Click start

Note down the sequence. It doesn't change, so feel free to click start until you've got it written down.

Enter the code

Hit enter

Open the box

Get the bag

master_flea July 16, 2008 3:50 AM

The numbers on the wall...

Are a code

They're a sequence for opening something

Have you looked at the painting?

It only has three raised sections

Press them in the order indicated by the numbers

I seem to have encountered a bug. When I

use the broom to get the "about you" card from the robot guy on the ceiling

I can do it but then I don't seem to be able to exit from that screen wherever I click or whatever I try to use.

Is it really a bug or I'm just supposed to do something to exit the screen?

Reply

It's a bug, as far as I can tell. If you refresh and get up to there again, it won't have to load the scene, and therefore should return you normally to the room.

At least, that's my theory.

Reply

Restarting and redoing it helped.

Reply

Thx, beekay, it worked.

Reply

Man this bites. Can anyone tell me what "drag the right end button" means? I'm on a mac and I get to the extension cord in my inventory. I know it is there.

Reply

You could use the grey side slider right of the inventory list to scroll the list down.

Reply

.......... I love you bioLarzen. I couldn't see it on the actual page, but if open up actual game file in a new window a gray scroll bar appears. ^_^ Thank you~!

Am I the only one who got totally stuck?

Reply

No, I'm totally stuck too...

Reply

What I would not like to learn is that there's a hot spot I'm missing for another bug...

Reply

So let's just check, we all have :

4 cards (1,2,3 and 6), the bag, the wire with a bend at the end, the magnet and the 3-pronged iron thing?

I can't find anything to do with any of them!

Reply

Joel,
seems like we got stuck at the same part...

Reply

To get any further on this point, you have to open the door with the round black number pad. Here are some hints:

click through all the numbers.

there aren't only numbers, but mathematical symbols.

the dot is describing a circle, more exactly its circumference.

remember something mathematical concerning the circumference of a circle?

Reply

Yep, pretty easy once you've got that part. I'm out!!

Reply

Thanks janne, that was enough to get the code. From there I had no trouble getting out.

Reply

Yeah, with that one solved it's really straightforward. Thx for the hint, Janne!

please help me: I put the iron thing, the lighted candle and the magnet in their places. But how can i get the magnet over a certain temperature?

Reply

Several bugs in this one. Don't like it. The graphics look pretty sweet though, almost neutral-like. (From RGB, Vision, etc.)

Reply
ThemePark July 16, 2008 8:11 AM

I got stuck again. :(

I'm trying to figure out the code for the barred door. I figure it's the Curie temperature for iron, which is 1043K, but no matter how I put that it, that's not the right answer. :(

Reply

The game keeps bugging out on me when I try for the guy on the ceiling with the broom.

I also never want to hear Pachabel's Canon in D again. At least not in midi form.

Oh, and as far as the Roman-numeraled cards go -- I guess I'm not catching master_flea's hint:

You say the cards are a code, and that the painting with the three raised panels (upper left corner, upper right corner, middle of bottom frame) is part of the code. Or, maybe, that should be a question: am I pressing the raised areas on the painting to correspond to the cards? How do I know the order? And what does it mean that one of the cards starts with Roman numeral IV?

'Course, until that broom thing is fixed, I'm dead in the water.

How am I supposed to know what is the code to get out? Is there an enigma in the cards? If so, I don't get it.

At the very end, how am I supposed to know what the code is? Is there a riddle in the cards? If so, I don't get it.

Catirina July 16, 2008 8:26 AM

ThemePark,
You're figuring out wrong.

The code is the answer for who you are. With the 7 cards you should be able to figure it out. Think on "light and dark", image, projection, these line of thinking.

Well, like Schmorgluck, I don't get the riddle.

The unsubstantial man makes me think of antimatter, while the rest makes me think of a camera. Neither of them work though, and thus I have no clue.

I'm stuck at the pink gate. No idea what to use for the code. I have the first six cards.

An otherwise good game, completely ruined by a stupid riddle at the end.

This is exactly why I never play web riddle games, I ALWAYS get stuck at the easiest things. :(

I'm sorry, but this is just not obvious to me.

Photography, photographer, stuff like that, but none of it matches with the unsubstantial stuff or the feet hint.

Might as well give up on the game.

there was no way I was going to figure out the end riddle on my own. Other then that it was a good game.

Reply

Can anyone stand the music for longer then 2 minutes?

Oh, and english isn't my first language, but still these translations hurt my brain.

Reply

And just to be clear, I am really not like a goldfish dung at all. Seriously.

Reply

Yeah, I have to say the clues did not take me to the answer even remotely! Plus, I looked everywhere and only found the first 6. Then, once I had escaped, I wasn't a shadow! I was

a little lightbulb-head man!

Too weird! Otherwise, a really nice game.

Reply

Okay I don't get the picture frame thing at all! Can someone be more clear, than just click in the order of the numbers? I've tried every combination and it doesn't move!!! HELP!!

Reply

Never mind, it just opened! I don't even know what I did though.

Reply

For the picture frame:

look at where you found the numerals

look at the raised parts of the picture.

Still don't get it?

If you found the 1 (I) next to the dresser, you click on the upper left-hand corner.

If I'm not making any sense, please tell me and I'll try to explain it differently.

Reply

Isn't it that, in Japanese, the words for "Stalker" and "Fish dung" sound similar enough for one to be a euphemism for the other? That's the sort of thing that people who only know other languages wouldn't understand.

Also, that and the music is what made me think "I" was a haunting spirit or ghost of a sinner. I kept typing in words like "Pray", "Ghost", "Amen" or "Spirit" before giving up. Stupid language barriers and my literal taking of them.

Reply
Ezrabbit July 16, 2008 2:13 PM

Wow.
This has to be one of, if not the most unintuitive room escapes I've ever played.

Two things stick out here:

1. The painting puzzle is a big problem. There is no indication that the raised portions of the frame are actually buttons, as they supply no feedback that you've pushed them! Make them light up, or push inward, or beep or SOMETHING!

2. I'm sorry, but I just don't see any point in translating a game with riddles into English if you can't speak the language well. I understand perfectly well that mistranslations and such may happen if your English isn't great. Heaven only knows what kind of nonsense I'd come up with if I tried to translate even basic sentences into Japanese, armed only with an English - Japanese dictionary. However, it just seems silly to translate a game with a key riddle at the end, into a language you don't speak well. Either get someone who can speak English to translate it, or don't bother translating it at all.

Reply

i found another bug

the extension cord goes to the bottom of the item list. but the whole list isn't viewable in the window. so i can't plug it in.

Reply

gentey, you can scroll down.

also too i found another ug: when i opened up the game at first i clicked and it went to the grass screen and froze there. other than that good game.

Reply

Hmm... I enjoyed it but was also quite frustrated.

For those of you having difficulty figuring out what to do with the Roman numerals (like I did):

Don't view the pair of numbers as a single value (I saw IV, IV and thought incorrectly, oh 46 - not 4 and 6).
As has been mentioned in prior comments

use the numerals to inform the order which you click on the 3 exposed pieces of trim around the painting. The order is:

Top Left
Bottom Middle
Top Left
Top Right
Bottom Middle
Top Right

Also, I had trouble seeing a couple items (and kept resetting the game thinking it was a bug - since others had had problems). The far right side beyond the items functions as an inventory scrollbar. Use it to see other items you've collected.

Reply

gentey, that is not a bug; you have to scroll down the item list :)

that is, if you have a PC, scroll the mouse roll down; or scroll the sidebar down.

on a mac...i think there is the sidebar as well.

nice game, after all. liked it :)

What did goldfish dung have to do with the answer at the end?

Reply

"Goldfish dung" translates better as something like "tagger-on", or "follower". Like someone you didn't invite, but came anyway.
The "follower" meaning has just been attached, there isn't a similar sounding word.
Stalker is a strange translation of it because the connotations associated with it are different.

Reply
Anonymous July 17, 2008 4:29 AM

card number 7 is

when you click the gate it is above the word "locked" (between the berriors)

Reply

I find it interesting that the designer of the game corrected a clue from "You are a goldfish dung" to "You are LIKE a goldfish dung", and then added an explanation that the second one fits better because in Japanese "goldfish dung" means "stalker". Why not then just change the card in "You are like a stalker"?? :)

Oh, and concerning the riddle, I have actually found it pretty easy, even though Engrish was attrocious. The parts I didn't like were the scrolling item interface with redundant buttons (why?) and the picture puzzle - if you make a button puzzle, then give feedback that something is, in fact, a button. Give me a small push animation, a sound, anything, geez...

Now excuse me, I have to go, I think I have some goldfish dung stuck to my shoe.

Reply
houseworkisevil July 17, 2008 6:45 PM

I laughed out loud when I saw the goldfish dung clue -- and thought to myself -- am NOT! I love the idea that it's goldfish too, not tuna dung or trout dung or blowfish dung. It has a the ring of a Monty Python insult ("your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries"). Downright poetic!

Even the corrected version of that clue led me astray when trying to find the answer. I had my "aha" moment after I read the answer to the riddle in the walkthrough....I'm thinking that MAYBE if I slept on it and rolled it around in my head for a few days, I'd have got it, but perhaps not. It was fairly opaque.

There's no way I'd give it a chance, because I get impatient with escape games that don't have a save feature, and tend to jump to walkthroughs more quickly.

Once again, another bad Japanese escape game. You can can barely understand anything they're trying to say (my advice: stick to visual escape puzzles only), and what angered me the most was the ridiculously obscure

puzzle about 'pi.'

It looks like whoever made the game didn't think much about how logically the game player would think.
