Weekday Escape

GrinnypAh, with Halloween fast approaching it's time to turn to escape games with a more atmospheric nature. How about a game set in an eerily empty hospital? How about one with mysterious strangers and deadly zombies? How about Endless Anesthesia?

endlessanesthesia.jpgDeveloped by Game2p, Endless Anesthesia is the perfect escape game for this spooky season. Be warned now, there's lots of blood and destruction, and nasty creatures that would like to eat your face. However, if you feel you are up to the challenge, then, well, let's begin.

After a lovely series of pencil drawings that explain... eh, not so much, but they certainly set the atmosphere for what is to come. When the opening scenes end you awake on an operating table in a hospital that is suddenly devoid of patients, health care workers, janitorial staff... basically, everyone is gone. At least, almost everyone. Explore the room and the floor you are on, get the elevator working, meet a mysterious guy who will give you a gun and a fighting chance, then explore some more. Can you get out before the things get you?

Navigation through the game can be a little tricky in spots. When you are in a room there are bars and arrows at the edge of the screen allowing you to turn right, left, go back, etc. It is in the hallways, however, when things can get a little confusing. When you leave a room and enter a hallway you will always be at the head of the hallway, no matter what room you enter and leave you will always be at the head of the hallway. Once you realize that it is easier to remember which door leads to which room.

endlessanesthesia_car.jpgInventory control is simple and intuitive. Simply grab an item from the inventory bar at the top of the screen (remember to hold down the mouse button) and use the item where needed. There are hotkeys for the flashlight and the gun, putting them in your hands quickly when necessary (and it will be necessary). There is a handy cursor change to a hand when you hover over objects that can be manipulated or taken, reducing much of the pixel hunting.

Analysis: Yes, the plot is a familiar one. Think 28 Days Later or any other recent zombie movie. Despite that, Endless Anesthesia is quite a fun challenge. Be warned, however, there is some shoot'em'up involved. You can die in the game if you're not careful, so be careful. Oh, and avoid the third floor until you are armed.

The artwork in Endless Anesthesia is not, perhaps, the sharpest or most detailed. Especially in the floor you first wake up in there is what seems like an endless sea of white, black, and gray, with only small touches of color (mostly from, well, blood). When you meet up with the mysterious stranger, however, and begin to find your way to other floors, more color seeps in. The game itself is a curious combination of pencil drawings, basic black and white, and even some touches of almost anime-like color cut scenes. The odd jumble only adds to the atmosphere of the game, enhancing the creepiness and paranoia. Eerie music and spooky incidental sounds only add to the experience. However, a mute button and the ability to save would have been a nice feature.

It almost feels like an opportunity was wasted here in not adding more detail. Although there are three floors to explore, some rooms seem to have no function other than as a dead end. More puzzles and more challenge would have made the game even better. Still, Endless Anesthesia is fun, atmospheric casual gameplay. Arm yourself, take a deep breath, and get ready to escape!

Endless Anesthesia Walkthrough

General Information

  • Inventory is in a scrolling menu at the top of the screen.

  • In the upper right corner of each inventory cell is a small triangle. Click on that triangle for a close-up of any particular inventory item.

  • Navigation in the hallways is a little tricky: every time you come out of a door you end up at the beginning of the hallway. Remember that and you won't get lost.

  • Don't go to the third floor until you have the gun and a lot of ammo. Seriously.

  • Press the "ctrl" key to use the flashlight and the shift key to use the gun.

  • Fire the gun by aiming with the mouse and clicking the left mouse button to shoot.

  • Good luck!

Second Floor/Operating Room

  • You wake up in an operating room. Click on the bar at the bottom of the screen to get off the table.

  • Turn right.

  • You see a medicine cabinet on the wall. Click on the cabinet for a close up.

  • There are two items on the shelves. Take them both and you should now have some bullets and an electronic key card.

  • Back up and turn right.

  • You are now facing a blood-stained hospital bed. To the left of the bed is a low rolling cabinet. Click on the cabinet for a close up.

  • Take the scalpel from the table top and back up.

  • Turn right.

  • There is a red bin on the left, click on it for a close up.

  • Notice the crumpled up note at the bottom of the bin. Take the note.

  • Examine the bloodstained note. It reads: 1486 x (blurred by blood) + (blurred by blood).

  • Back up.

  • There is what looks like a camera on the wall above the table. Click on it for a close up.

  • Take the scalpel from your inventory and use it on the wires below the camera (or whatever it is). A red wire should fall on the table. Take the red wire.

  • Back up and turn right.

  • You are now facing the door. Click on the door for a close up.

  • Click on the door handle to enter the hallway.

Second Floor/Bright Hallway

  • You are in a hallway with two doors on the left and two doors on the right.

  • The door on the left nearest to you is the Operating Room where you woke up.

  • The door on the left farther away and the door on the right nearest to you are empty hospital rooms. Ignore them.

  • Click on the door on the right farthest away from you.

  • You are now in a hospital room with three beds. Click on the center bed for a close up.

  • There is some more bullets on the bed. Take them and back up.

  • Turn right.

  • You are now facing a small table with a phone on it. Click on the table for a close up.

  • Take the flashlight that is sitting in front of the phone.

  • Back up and turn right.

  • Click on the door for a close up and go through the door.

  • You are now back at the head of the hallway. Click on the wall at the far end of the hallway to go forward.

  • There is an elevator here, but it doesn't work so ignore it for now.

  • Click on the double doors at the far end of the hallway to go forward.

  • Click on the double doors to go through them.

Second Floor/Dark Hallway

  • You are now in a dark hallway. Use the ctrl key to activate your flashlight.

  • There are two doors on the right and two restroom doors on the left. Click on the men's room to enter.

  • Once in the men's room open the stalls. In the right stall you will see the number 88 written in blood on the toilet tank.

  • Back up until you are back in the hallway.

  • The ladies room is locked and I never managed to find my way in. Like some of the other rooms it is probably a dummy.

  • Click on the far wall to move forward.

  • You are now at a cul-de-sac facing another set of double doors. These doors have an electronic panel on the left.

  • Click on the double doors to open them.

  • Enjoy the cut-scene. Who is that mysterious stranger, anyway?

  • You should now be back facing the doors again.

  • Click on the electrical panel to the left of the doors for a close up.

  • Click on the right edge of the panel to open it.

  • Drag the red wire from your inventory to the place where a wire appears to be missing.

  • Click on the left edge of the open panel door to close it.

  • Yay, the panel is now working! If only we had an electronic card key.

  • Oh wait, we do (if you remembered to pick it up from the operating room).

  • Before you use the card key examine it in close up.

  • Hmmm, the card belongs to somebody named John with an ID of 34782819.

  • Place the key card in the slot.

  • Okay, now we need a password.

  • Remember the bloody note we found in the operating room?

  • The note read: 1486 x (something obscured in blood) + (what looks like a long number obscured in blood).

  • Remember the bathroom stall?

  • The solution to figuring out the password is: multiply 1486 x 88 (the number from the bathroom stall). That results in 130768. Add 130768 to the ID number (34782819) to get 34913587. That is the password combo.

  • Enter the password into the panel and press enter. The panel should now read system activated.

  • Back up 4 times until you are in the hallway with the elevator doors. Put your flashlight away, you don't need it right now.

  • Click on the elevator doors.

  • You are now in the elevator. Click on the number panel for a close up.

  • Go to the first floor.

First Floor/Lobby

  • Okay, now it's getting a little icky.

  • Turn right twice until you are facing a car that came through the wall.

  • Click and drag the bricks on the floor to move them until you find a yellow crystal (it will be to the left of the car).

  • Take the crystal and turn right.

  • You are now facing some double doors. Click on the doors to enter.

  • You are now in an administrative office. Goody, more gore.

  • There is a laptop computer on the desk nearest to you, but you can't access it yet.

  • Click on the papers on the desk that is farther away for a close up.

  • Take the orange crystal and back up.

  • Click on the file cabinet on the right for a close up.

  • Open the bottom right drawer and read the letter that you find there.

  • Hmmm, we need to know Rose's full name and birthday. Oh, and she can't spell for crap.

  • Back up.

  • Back up again until you are back in the lobby.

  • Turn left until you are facing the elevator again.

  • Click on the elevator to enter it.

  • Time to go to the third floor.

  • Click on the panel for a close up and click on the 3.

  • Better arm yourself.

Third Floor

  • Make sure you use the shift key to arm yourself as soon as you push the button for 3.

  • When the doors open you will be attacked by some sort of Freddy Kruger zombie. Shoot fast. Aim for the head and chest.

  • Gee, you made a mess.

  • When the zombie is dead, notice that light is reflecting off of something near his head on the floor.

  • Click on the spot where the reflection is and you will have acquired a key.

  • Use the crtl key to pull up your flashlight.

  • Click on the door to your right for a close up.

  • Open the door and enter.

  • Click on the table to the right for a close up.

  • Amongst the papers on the table is a dvd. Take it.

  • Back up and go through the door back to the hall.

  • Now back up so that you are facing the other end of the hall.

  • There is a bulletin board to the right, click on it for a close up.

  • Read all the notices on the wall.

  • Looks like Rose's full name is Rose Jennifer inn and her office is 19.

  • Looks like the code for Rose's office is 19910919.

  • Read the memo about the trials carefully. Of great interest is the number of test subjects for the vaccine.

  • Back up from the board.

  • Click on the large bloodstain on the far wall to go back to the elevator (and the dead zombie).

  • Go back into the door on the right.

  • This time click on the safe on the floor on the left.

  • Hmmm, we need a combination.

  • Perhaps the memo about the drug trials will be helpful?

  • The code is 3471, the number of people who participated in the vaccine trials.

  • Enter the code and click the arrow button.

  • When the safe is open take the blue crystal.

  • Back up and go back to the hall.

  • Time to go back to the first floor.

  • Enter the elevator and click on 1.

First Floor

  • Turn off your flashlight.

  • Turn right four times, until you are facing some double doors with red gurneys lined up against the wall on the right.

  • Click on the doors for a close up.

  • Hmm, padlocked, guess we need a key.

  • Use the key you got from the dead zombie to open the padlock.

  • Open the doors and enter.

  • Sitting on a box in the middle of the room is some more ammo. Take it.

  • Click on the shelves on the right for a close up.

  • Move the bottles on the shelf until you find the green jewel. You should now have four jewels. Back up.

  • Back up from room and the doors and turn left.

  • You should now be facing the brown double doors of the administrative office. Enter the office.

  • Click on the laptop for a close up.

  • Click on the right edge of the laptop to open the dvd player.

  • Place the dvd from your inventory into the player and close it.

  • Now it's time to guess the password.

  • We learned from reading the note that the ID is Rose's full name. The user id is Rose Jennifer inn (note the capitalization).

  • The password is 19910919 (from the list of office passwords on the 3rd floor).

  • Enter the user ID and password, and click the enter button.

  • The fourth floor is now unlocked.

  • Back up to the lobby, then turn left 3 times until you are facing the elevator.

  • Enter the elevator and press 4.

  • Time for endgame.

Endgame

  • You are standing in front of a door. Open it and go in.

  • You are now in a room with two tanks and some blue machinery. Hmmm, is there something in that machine to the right?

  • Click on the blue console to the left for a close up.

  • Now place the four gems in the four holes (clockwise from top: orange, blue, yellow, green).

  • Brace yourself.

  • The 14th floor on the elevator will activate, and whatever is in the blue machine to the right will start to break free.

  • Pull up your gun now!

  • As soon as the thing gets free start shooting it.

  • The scene will shift and you will pull back to get a clear view of the room. As soon as this happens start shooting the white tank nearest you, as quickly as possible.

  • The tank will blow up and destroy whatever that was.

  • Wow, you made an even bigger mess.

  • Back up three times and get in the elevator.

  • Press 14 and enjoy the cut scene.

  • You survived!

Suz,

use the knife to cut the red wire, I think from the very first room?

It should be mentioned somewhere that shift pulls out your gun. I had no reason to get a close up look of my gun so never figured that bit out - I died 5 times trying to punch the monster.

Ok, if you are going to keep dying in certain scenes, it's no fun playing. I played this twice and ended up dying both times. This is impossible.

I can't get off of the third floor! Is that a glitch in my computer or the game or what???

Reply
Anonymous October 14, 2009 3:49 PM

I have the impression that this game is half-finished, like if the author(s) had grown tired of an initially ambitious project and abandoned it, but decided to release what they had so far for whatever reason, throwing in some concept art to fill the gaps. From the elevator one might deduce that 14 floors were planned but only 4 of them were finally implemented.

There are also some playability issues. It takes forever to enter a room, for instance, which breaks completely the playing rhythm.

All in all, if you haven't played it yet consider it may not be really worth your play time. A pity, because the elements for a decent EtR are there.

I'm on Firefox 3.0.14, Windows XP SP2

Reply

Stinkage! I've put the wee crystals in the blue console but the baddies not waking up and the elevator isnt doing anything. Must be a glitch unless anyone's got any ideas?

Reply

I have the same problem as Kespie-put the crystals in and nothing. Frustrating. Probably the 8th time re-playing this. I shot the tanks just for fun and they didn't blow up either.

Reply

I don't like this one. What annoy me to the most is the music-- which more like a music for a battleground with all those sword taking sound effects-- and then the unnecessary blur for a lot of scenes.

Another things are the scenes on first floor somehow unappealing. I'm waiting a long time for the door to open just to see some boring rooms. The meet-up scene also surprise me, not because some zombie pounce in but more because the art style changed. I decide to not continue.

Reply

This game was alright, much better than what I could do graphics wise, but the music was just annoying! All those sword noises totally freaked me out, I felt like there was some zombie always standing behind me sharpening a machete. And then at the endgame, the music went to Pachelbel's Canon in D, which as a cellist, is the absolute worst song ever. Massive Fail.

Reply

I have to say, the inventory is rather annoying. If you autoscroll (by moving the mouse to the left or right edge), the slider at the top doesn't move, so they're out of sync. The triangle to click on to see a description of the item is ridiculously small. To use at item, you can't just click on it; you have to click and drag to where you want to use it.

As rosedragon and MizBB said, the soundtrack is all wrong; why are there random footsteps and sword noises when there's no one around?

I got all the way to the end and then died. I'm just supposed to guess that

I'm supposed to shoot the tank, not the monster?

Now I'm supposed to play all the way through again? No thanks, not worth it.

Reply
BlackWolfe Coyoten October 16, 2009 8:14 AM

I agree with Chipmunk. The lack of checkpoints or the ability to save was harsh. The fact that the first fight taught me to shoot a lot and quickly meant that the moment the final boss was exposed, I started clicking, and by the time the screen panned back to allow me to do what needed to be done, I was out of ammo. Not going through that again.

Reply

... Okay, once I used all the gems, nothing happened.

I thought the

thing in the tube to the right

was supposed to come out and the 14th floor was supposed to be opened?

I've been waiting for a few minutes, but nothing has happened...

I'm sure I used the gems correctly.

*sigh* Looks like I'm not the only one with this problem.

But I don't think I would've ever finished this w/out a walkthrough. Like I would've never known to click the very edge of the

card scanner and of the laptop

so I could fix it or insert something. :X

Uck, I was disappointed... Sorry...

Reply

I think this game has a MAJOR flaw... after the cut-scene, if you exit without fixing the panel, you're then stuck outside the room. I didn't know about the red wire until then, so i had to leave and retrieve it, but then couldn't get back inside the room. So instead of starting over... i just gave up on this one. Too bad, it was fun up 'till then.
