Dona RoomDona Room is a game that has been around for just a few weeks, and yet I have received many suggestions to include it here. It is another of the 'escape-the-room' variety of point-and-click Flash adventures, and it is very good. As with other games like it, look around the various objects in the room to collect items and find clues on how to escape.

The game was created by Naoki Nakashima, and contains a small amount of Japanese writing that explains the story behind being stuck in the room. These details are not necessary to solving the game as all of the major clues are given as symbols and Arabic numerals (1,2,3...).

A couple of hints to save you some frustration: in a world of symbols, a filled symbol is not the same as a non-filled one; and a triangle pointing up is not the same as one pointing down. Also, you must find all items and view all of the clues before the safe will open—even if you enter the correct code. When you finish the game, be sure to read the comments to learn what all the numbers mean, as Maiko has so generously provided a translation of the game's amusing ending.

Play Dona Room

Thanks go to Karina, Evan and everyone else who suggested this one. =)

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

Here is a complete walkthrough

  1. Necessities only:

  2. Click on the green portion directly underneath the bed to obtain a diagram

  3. Click 2 views to the right and grab the silver key behind the stereo (side view of shelf)

  4. Click on the picture on the top shelf to obtain the picture

  5. Go to desk view and click on the top narrow drawer directly ABOVE the drawer that has a silver key hole to obtain the casette tape

  6. Press the item button and drag the silver key on top of the silver key hole to obtain the tweezers

  7. Go back to the shelf and look at the cat piggybank on the bottom shelf

  8. Use the tweezers on the gold key in the coin slot to obtain the gold key

  9. Use the gold key on the gold key hole drawer to obtain the razor blade

  10. Use the blade on the poster of the guy to obtain access to the safe; Now to figure out the code: Hollowed square, upside down filled triangle, hollow triangle

  11. In the side view of the bed, click on the extreme left side where there is a little bit of writing on the wall and note the code. In that same view, there is a brown slit on the right side below the pillow that is a coin. Grab it.

  12. Go to the trash can and get the paper in it. Look at the code to get your first number. (#)

  13. Making sure your item screen is gone, look at the dartboard to translate the code. (#)

  14. Go to the desk and click on the books. Using the diagram, place the books in the correct order and read the top line only to get another number.(#)

  15. Go to the shelf and click on the top portion above the top most shelf (making sure the item screen is gone) and you will see some writing on the shelf. Place the cassette tape on it to decode it and get another number.(#)

  16. Go to the light bulb and drag the coin (the brown 10 circle in your item menu) to the screws to open the glass jar and obtain the black light bulb.

  17. Drag the bulb to the lamp in the desk drawer view.

  18. Turn off the light switch and go back to the desk drawer view to translate some more numbers (###)

  19. Finally, while looking at the code, click on the picture in your item screen and see the last code secretly written on the picture. (#)

  20. Use your brain and note the filled shapes versus the un-filled shapes.

  21. Use the combination you get on the safe and click on the handle.

  22. View the paper, click on the door and it's game over!

I seriously don't understand this one! ah well. its a good sort of game.. :P

Reply

How do you get the light bulb?

Reply

Intruiging... I've got the darts, the photo, the picture in a wallet, the scrunched up note from the bin, and I've used the felt pin to deface the poster (to no great effect). Also, the darts stick in the poster. But I've noticed that if you arrange the book in the order suggested by the photograph, the titles (when read across) says: "CIRCLE AXE HEN BID A AT LO ICE ENHHR IS TWO TTAE VEOISEMRLTRM"...
There's too many real words there to be a coincidence but not enough to make any real sense...
I'm going to crack this, I swear I will!

First off, I'd like to say thanks for scouring the web and providing all these links to so many cool and strange games. Also, this one has got to be the hardest one yet. The only tools I had, I used on the poster and now I can find anything else to grab. Could you give me a hint about how to even start this one?

Floodclaw July 11, 2005 7:41 PM

This is a pretty average game, compared to other "escape the room" games, like viridian room or MOTAS. But im stuck on this..... I have the paper, the darts, the pen, the photo, and the tape, can anyone help?!

Reply

Timmy - you need something to unscrew the lid to get the lightbulb. Have you found the coin?

Toby - maybe if you didn't read ALL the lines something might make sense there?

Scarfist - my pleasure =) There are a couple of things that are rather difficult to find. Try looking at the shelves from the side, and behind the head of the bed. Look carefully and click on everything you can. =)

Foodclaw - If you have the pen and the darts, you haven't used them yet. Good one finding the tape, that took me quite some time to find. Look in the places I mentioned above.

Reply

Ah.... thanks for the clue. I've got that subtle clue now. But I've searched all over in vain for the tape I've heard so much about. And I could do either a screwdriver to repair these plugs or batteries might do the trick. Unless the gadgets don't work?

Reply

Finished it! Very fun, slightly confusing though.

The blacklight is very helpful near the end. I never really 'got' the clue with the books, but it's okay.

Reply

if i never came to look at the comments for help i would've never finished it. i don't understand the clue behind the head of the bed at all... i had to guess the number for that symbol. if only i could read japanese... then i would be able to figure out why the person was trapped in the room, lol... it was an ok game i guess... the blacklight bit was interesting. thx for it.

Reply

click around till you find a place that the tape would fit perfectly.

but, that's about as far as i've gotten.

great game, but with that comes great frustration.

Reply

Carmini - the clue behind the head of the bed relates to the dart board, which gives you the value for the filled square.

Reply

Okay I've got the tape... Can't figure where to put it though... I've tried the obvious stereo but it won't do anything... Hmmm. Hints?

Reply

David - there is one spot that cannot be accessed with the inventory open. If you find it, you may find what you're looking for. =)

Reply
idle indecision July 11, 2005 11:45 PM

how do you find the value for the upright triangle?

Reply

Idle - try opening the blue book under the black light.

Reply
benetnash July 12, 2005 12:06 AM

I got nothin....stuck at having crumpled paper, blue book, and picture...put the tape where it's supposed to go, used the darts and marker, figured out the books, understand the head board clue, found the safe....what the heck am I missing? What's this coin you speak of

Reply

I got the tape put in place and thats as far as i can get.

Reply

I have gotten the poster defaced, the 2 drawers open, the safe showing, the numbers under the blacklight to show (including the one on the picture), the books lined up right (and i've noted the message), found the paper in the trash and read the message on top of the bookshelf (which i don't get)... what else must I do?

Reply

benetnash - admittedly, the coin is a tough one to find. Where might you stash money in your room, besides the piggybank?

Aries - if you don't understand the message on the bookshelf, then you need something to help you decipher it. Are you sure you opened all the drawers?

Reply

grrr...I can't find the coin...can anyone help please?

Reply

jbs - you can find the coin from the view when looking behind the head of the bed.

Reply

Sometimes people put money underneath their pillow...but what happens if it falls off the edge?

Reply
benetnash July 12, 2005 1:25 AM

sweet....just did it...thanks jay. I was about to break something. I got the coin just before reading what you told jbs and that was that.

I like how this point and click lets you think...you gotta think and do a little bit of math and logic to figure out what the symbols stand for. Most pac's are simply that, point and click, then boom, you're done.

good game

Reply

Thanks Benetnash - I agree with your assessment about having to think and reason things out. I also like the fact that not everything had a purpose.

Reply
ShadeOfLight July 12, 2005 2:44 AM

Where does the tape go? I've tried closing the inventory, but all I see is the light at the top of the room. What am I supposed to do with it?

Reply
Irashtar July 12, 2005 3:22 AM

If you're wondering why you can leave after reading the note, it basically says, do your homework and remember, the door slides, so stop pushing and banging on it! ^^

Reply

Finished it - but I needed help with the first key and the coin, they were hard to find. But I got confused about this talk about tape, I thought there was a roll of scotch tape somewhere, I already had the cassette :-)

Oh, and thanks for the site - I love it!

Reply

First off, love your site jay! It's awesome! Found almost everything, got the code ( I think ) but have two questions, where is the felt pen? and where does the tape go? Nothing seems to work, and I can't get it to go into the stereo (although that seems useless)

Reply

That tape makes things more, not less confusing. For a start, it's drawn on. And secondly, it makes no sense whatsoever!
I am still determined to crack this though...

Reply

Ahh. I haven't found the actual tape, just the scribbly counterpart. So could I have a clue for where the real tape is?
It's 26 degrees C and my keyboards started melting. This could prove dangerous for my mental and physical health...

I really like this game. Unlike a lot of other "Room" adventures, you don't need to have the pointer on the EXACT pixel. Everything is right in front of your eyes. I finished it in about 1/2 hour. FUN!!

ShadeOfLight July 12, 2005 11:01 AM

Finally beat it! Thanks for the hints, everyone. =)

I think the name of the game is called
"A very common escape game".

The beginning says:
"By the time I realized, I was in a strange room". This story begins with such a very common setting.

Click on the screen, collect items, and drag and drop to use these items. Also a very common instruction.

You only meant it to be a time waster, but without realizing, you become way too involved in the game. Here begins the such a very common escape game.

..............

Many of you figured it out already, but the poster says "I want money" and the photo in the little blue book says "If under the black light"

In addition to what Irashtar said, (do your homework and remember, the door slides, so stop pushing and banging on it!)the mother also wrote a p.s. "Your snack is in the usual shelf". At the end, he wrote that the sequel will be named "Find the usual shelf". Apparently the mother knows how forgetful her son/daughter is and that's why she left the note in the safe with an unknown combination. :)

>>You should read below while you look at the black screen at the end.

After the door opens, it has the numbers in the middle. They are the number of times that you (respectively):
> "bof bof"d the pillow
> Tried to do something with the chair
> Tried to put the tape in the stereo
> Tried to pick the poster man's hair
with the tweezer

I think it's very funny. I hadn't thought about the last one!

Reply

Thanks guys. I was clicking on that pillow over and over again and couldn't figure it out until I got up this morning and looked around again and with AmishJ's hint, I finally found that #@$%&*!@ coin...hehe.

Reply

I think I've found everything but I can't get the two locked doors on the desk open. Is there a key?

Reply
lethalbeef July 12, 2005 2:44 PM

Bof bof, hehe
Just a supplement to Maiko's note: according to the note, you are a girl named Anita, and the door actually pulls open, not slides.

Reply

Where can I find the tweezers? I'm baffled.

Reply

Found the keys! Now I can't figure out what the heck is in the bottom drawer! I've got it but I don't know what it is.

Reply

Whoosh! I finally solved it!

Reply

I cant figure out the code to the safe. Well, i can't figure the number significance to the three shapes.

Reply

Are you all talking about the drawing on the top of the shelf as the "tape". If not I have no idea where the tape is. Help? I have everything else but can't figure out the code.

Reply

i wish i would have known about the numbers at the end when i first played, i'm sure i had a high number with the stereo!

Reply

Thanks, Colby, for the suggestion. I have updated the entry to let players know they should check the comments to learn what the numbers mean when they finish the game. =)

Reply

Finished it! Wow, that was very cool. I almost gave up until the black light gave a couple of hints! Very nice.

Reply

Again;
Good one, Jay.
I got it, but it's a pity I can't read Japanese. According to the end screen, I never Bof Boffed the pillow, never tried to do something with the chair, never tried to put the tape in the stereo and never tried to pick the poster man's hair.
Hm...

well i found the safe, whats the code ?

Reply

The code is:

non-filled square
pointing down filled triangle
pointing up non-filled triangle

Much of the game is about figuring out what numbers correspond to those symbols. There are clues scattered about the room that help you deduce what those symbols represent.

Reply
tabasco July 15, 2005 7:35 PM

I can't get the code for the safe. I'm about to jump off a bridge. Help. What is the pointing down filled triangle?

Reply

no actually what i REALLY need to know is do i need to get rid of the tape before i try to open the safe? the tape is the only thing i have no idea what to do with it. hurry before i kill somebody.

haha hi jay thanks for the help, wish i had read your response sooner but i figured it out anyway. that was a great game, i planned to play only a little while then quit but i got totally hooked. that is such a weird thing to do with the tape. when i was done it said i tried to put the tape in the stereo 22 times.

Reply

When you say to look on the top shelf do you mean the very top that has nothing on it? If so, where do you click? I've been trying for hours!

Reply

Yes, Kim, on the very top... and there is something on it. Your inventory must be closed in order to see the top of the shelf, however.

Reply

I am STILL lost at this, I know what the nonfilled in star means, the filled in square, the nonfilled in triangle, and the filled in star mean. The filled in star however, doesnt help in any way unless I am missing something! A little bit of help here anybody?
Great site Jay!!

Reply

(Thanks, Dee!) You need to know the value of the filled star for when you look at the blue book under the blacklight.

Reply

Finally!! I forgot to close my inventory when trying to get to the top shelf and that nail file is actually a razor! Thanks for all the help!

Reply

Holy cow! I finally got it. It's more interesting when you don read the posts for clues!

i really think i have the code for the safe, althought when i enter it, it doesnt work. i have numbers for filled in square, non filled square, filled star, non filled star, circle, filled triangle and non filled triangle. Using these numbers, i worked out the number for the safe, althought it doesnt work...what am i missing?

angelina July 18, 2005 7:52 PM

oh yeah, i have found the blacklight clue (which made no sense to me whatsoever), i noticed that when you put the books in the order of the books in the pic, there are some words spelt out. like hex, and circle. (hmmm... what am i supposed to do with that- i dont understand) the clue on the top of the dresser(dont get it), and the clue behind the bed. (didnt get that one either) i am really confused.

Reply

did, you get the blacklight going? i think you may be father than me, im stuck on getting that key out, how did you do that

Reply

the code wont work and i cant get out of this room ahhhhhhhhhh whats the code????? because the one i found on this post thingy didnt work

Reply

from the books, i think its says that circle is two if you read the top lines, where is this tweezer and razor you're talking bout

Reply

uggg... that coin and first key gave me a head ache... but now I have something to drive my friends nuts with too. Thanks.

Reply

U have to find the tape then click on top of the shelve that is a picture, use some of the items.

Reply

Sara - yes, you are missing some shapes: empty pointing up triangle, and the filled star.

Angelina - you need to use the razor and the tape, if you haven't already. The clue behind the bed has something to do with the dart board.

Dianne - you need the tweezers that are in the drawer, opened with the silver key. Try looking at the shelves from a different angle.

Reply

where is the safe? and what do i do with the razor?

Reply

Oye! =)

Use the marker to draw on something.
Use the razor to slice something up.
Once you use the razor, you will find the safe.
The tape (cassette) is in a drawer of the desk.
Place the tape on a drawing of the same shape to give you a clue.
The numbers under the blacklight appear when the blacklight light bulb is put into the desk lamp and the room light is switched off.

Wow, very nice game. It took me about half an hour... I enjoyed it. I would have to say the hardest thing for me was finding the value of the empty circle and empty square. And the freakin tape... I swear I tried 100 times putting it in that dang cassette player. :-P Nice trick.

Good luck people. And if you figure it out without reading the messages, ur amazing!!!!! lol

Reply

I am stuck on what numbers are pointing up triangle and filled in star....??

Reply

Finished finally :-)
You need to use a piece of simple deduction to work out the circle is

number zero

. I don't get how the writing beside the bed gives the value for the square, I used trial & error for that one.

Reply

Hey, tape is a audio cassette tape...There is a third drawer on the dresser. Click just above the top drawer, maybe a little to the left. Think of how it might be on a real desk. You must find all clues before being able to use the code. Trust me, the code is 718.

Other hints:To open glass container w/ black light - use coin found on bed on the screws...
To see black light, turn off the main light in the room...not much else to it.

Reply

OK, 10 minutes of my time this game has taken away. I want them back.

Reply

I got tape, tweazers, coin, blue book, razor, darts, crumpled paper and marker.
I read the tape clue, clue behind bed, dartboard clue, clue on table, picture clue, book clue.
I got the numbers 718.
The safe does not open. I typed the numbers, turned the handle, but it does not open.
Please help.

the code for the safe is 718
if it is not working, than you have not looked at all of the clues that give you the # 718
the clues are:

1. the message on top of the shelves needs to be looked at through the cassette tape
2. the message behind the bed needs to be looked at
3. the books on the desk need to be set up to look like the picture
4. the desk and book need to be looked at through the black light

i put the code in 714 and pulled the bar, nothing happens, so what do i do?

Reply

How do you get 8 for the final number of the code? the rubbish in the bin show triangle as 4.

Reply

hey jay ive been playing your games for ages now and i love em! keep up the good work and keep the "room" sorta games going cos their my favourite! see ya later hunni x

Reply

adam-you have to put the tape someplace you can get to by closing the inventory and viewing the shelves close up before you can get the safe open. After that type

718

on the safe and pull the bar. Voila! You have the note! Now go to the door and open it!

Reply

omg i tried using the code 718 and I can't GET IT OPEN PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

Reply

It shouldn't take you guys that long, I mean it only took me 20 minutes. Of course i needed a little help from JAY IS GAMES OF COURSE.

Reply

woot! I solved it pretty much by myself and I'm not even that smart really. Go me!

Reply

Sigh, could have been a good game.

You need to click on the exact pixel to get the key behind the radio.

The penny is the exact same color as the bed, and to the wrong scale.

You need to turn off your items to be able to click to the top of the shelf.

Never could get the safe to open, even with the right code.

Better interface would make a better game.

Reply

jay help i need the code!!!

Reply

I don't remember what the code is(!) Isn't it somewhere on this page? =P

Man, that tape thing was a killer!

Reply

the code is 718 the tape goes on the top of the shelf. the coin is on the side of the bed. you have to open the first drauer to get weezers to get the key out of the dog. Open the light thing on the bottom shelf and put that black light in the lamp. Turn the light off near the door. look at the code on desk..look at the code in book under the black light. write everything down and it will make sense...

Reply

it was a nice game ...kind of easy to figure out the symboles ... the only dificulty was the Jap. writing..

Reply

well i got to the point where i get to the safty box.... now what all the numbers are so confusing to me.0.0

Reply

That was fun. I only looked at the spoilers to find the silver key. Thanks Jay!

Reply

Yes I would like to know anyone who can read japanese so I can get a rough translation of the text

Reply

Wow, this was a pretty fun little game. The cassette tape part was killer though.

Hi, how do you put the bulb into the lamp on the desk? I can't figure out how you do it!?

Please help!!

Reply

Ugh.. i can not find this so called blacklight. Help?!?!

Reply

LOL i had so much fun with the pillow and the poster! XD

Yesse: the blacklight is in its case.

Reply

i just can't open the save! argh!!!

Reply

I find some of these might be helpful:

circle

displayed on the first horizontal alphaberts of the books. it means to tell you to

circle

the keyhole of the first drawer, it will open.
find the coin near the edge of the bed, this coin use to open the

screws

in order to take put the lightbulb.
Take this lightbulb and fix it on the table lamp stand.
turn off the lights. check the those equations. then click on the item, the

the picture of a man sitting

, you will get another clue.
the save is behind the poster of the man, use a

blade

to cut it off, it will display the save.
find the key for the blade in the 2nd drawer.
the clipper from the 1st drawer is to take out the

key

from the 'doggy'.
the two darts only for fun I think, to poke the man's nose on the poster. If you find a chalk, u can draw a dirty face on him...keke..pretty naughty there..
there are a little 'pictogram' found drawn on top of the shelf, which i not really get the whole picture.
besides, there are numbers appeared on the wall behind the bed's head.
I did with guessing with the numbers to open the save, cause i knew the 3rd symbol must be

eight

, and 2nd might be

one or two

and the 1st I dont know. They must not be number zero, cause from the 1st equation on the reading table, it must have meant 0-0=0
but finally i can't open the save, even though i got the code rightly, so dissapointing!
so i have to look through the walkthroughs, the code is

718

anyway...
i'm still stuck

Reply

opps..correction for chalk - is the marker.

Thanks Jay for the game :)

Reply

i cant get anything,,,is there anyone there?

help!

Reply

I know what the combination to the sfae is supposed to be, but does anyone know where the answer to the empty triangle is? Any help is appreciated.

Something I've noticed while playing these games is that, you can't just know the answer to the safe, you have to have played through all the steps for the safe to accept your answer. Even if your answer is right, and you know the combination, but haven't done all the steps, you're S.O.L.

blazin shorty November 11, 2006 12:31 AM

yea just like duka said u cant just put the combination (718) on the safe u have 2 get everything done first...HINT: after u do everything turn off the lights and put the wallet with the pic under the lamp light so u can see the last code

Reply

YES FINALLY about an hour and a half it took me. and everyone that is still having trouble with the code to the safe, just remember to look at EVERYTHING else before you put in the code because it mwont work. cyyaa

IF YOU NEED HELP WITH THE TAPE.
the tape (in other words, the CASSETE!), just go to VERY TOP of the shelves and drag the cassete on the green drawings.
hard eh?

Walkthrough:

1) Look at the dart board. Notice the order of the numbers 9 - 12 - 5 - 20 - 1. Take the darts (or leave them, they are not important)
2) Look at the bed. Look behind the headpiece of the bed to get a clue (THIS MUST BE DONE OR THE SAFE WILL NOT OPEN). The clue is the ordering of the numbers on the wall behind the bed correspond to the ones on the dartboard. The filled in square then equals to '5'
3) While looking at the numbers on the wall you can see a flat brown thing on the right side of the bed. It's a penny. Pick it up.
4) Turn to look at the bookcase from the side. Pick up the small silver key behind the stereo. You need to hit it exactly with the mouse or your view will just change to a full frontal view of the bookcase. You may need several tries to hit the exact position. Just keep trying.
3) Look at the bookcase. Pick up the photo. Look at it. Note the color sequence of the books.
4) Zoom in on the lamp on the lowermost shelf. Drag the penny to the screws, click the glass and then pick up the bulb.
5) Look at the desk and zoom in. You may pick up a pen. It is not necessary. Drag the bulb on the lamp. open the top drawer (long drawer above the two locked ones). Get cassette.
6) Unlock the drawer with the silver lock using the silver key. Pick up tweezers.
7) Organize the books in the order of colors, just like they appear on the photo. You'll be able to read "circle is two" if you read the indicated lines on the photograph. (THIS MUST BE DONE OR THE SAFE WILL NOT OPEN).
8) Zoom out. Click on the trash can. Pick up piece of paper. Look at it. (THIS MUST BE DONE OR THE SAFE WILL NOT OPEN). The empty triangle equals '4'
9) Go back to the bookcase and look at the little piggy bank on the lower most shelf. Use tweezers to get the golden key stuck in the slot.
10) Go back to the desk. Use the golden key in the golden lock and pick up the knife.
11) Turn to the bed and look under it. Pick up the blue book.
12) Zoom back out and click on the poster. You may drag the darts on the nostrils and the pen on the poster if you like to make it a little more appealing, but this is not necessary. Use the knife to cut the poster loose and reveal the safe.
13) Turn off the lights with the switch by the door and go to the desk. Now look at the lighted spot. (THIS MUST BE DONE OR THE SAFE WILL NOT OPEN). Jot down the equations.
14) While looking at the equations take a look at the photo book to get another equation. (THIS MUST BE DONE OR THE SAFE WILL NOT OPEN). Turn the lights back on.
15) Go to the bookcase and click on the top shelf where you will find a drawing. Put the casette on top of the drawing. (THIS MUST BE DONE OR THE SAFE WILL NOT OPEN). This will reveal the empty star to be equal to the number '3'.
16) You should now be able to do the math and solve for the symbols on the safe.
(The combination is 718)
17) Enter the code in the safe and use the handle. Read the note. Exit the room

The End.

When you put the books together, just read the first two lines of each section to give you an answer.

Wow! I just finished it. That was...alright, semi-hard, SUPER FUN! I needed help with the tape but that was pretty much it.

With the safe code, I knew what the filled in upside down and right side up triangle were so I just guessed on the square. I got it on the 2nd try.

For those of you who can't open the safe with the correct code and also those wondering how you're supposed to figure out that eight, make sure to

read the magazine you found under bed when you're at that desk lit by the black light (make sure the lights are off)

Reply

terrible how long that took me!!
Hint they all say what you have to do before entering the code, but they all forgot to say: take the bleu book and keep it at the blacklight!!!
