joyeDismantlement: Barber PolePondering the greater world around escape titles is rarely a fruitful endeavor, but even by those standards the popular Dismantlement series from Gam.eBB.jp stretches the imagination. Who is this lunatic who keeps putting bombs inside of radios, alarm clocks, and even burgers? Perhaps more importantly, who are you? Are you on the bomb squad? What kind of bomb squad arms people with just a screwdriver anyway? Or do you just go around taking things apart randomly and happen to run into bombs? Shouldn't the two of you, bomber and dismantler, get together and have a coffee sometime? You probably would hit it off. Anyway, today your random potential firebomb sits in front of the hairdresser: Dismantlement: Barber Pole.

Like the previous games, you solve several layers of puzzles, using only your own smarts and trusty cursor. In this game, one puzzle requires either a genius-level spatial intelligence or a real life paper and scissors to model the clue. Or you could cheat. Look, we don't judge here. That's what the combox is for. Comment with your breakthroughs and frustrations. The "power of posting" is inscrutable and probably magic. Use it wisely.

Maybe you, the dismantler, and the bomb placer are indeed in some kind of relationship. That's the only explanation I can find for why you somehow know to take apart this particular barber pole. This is all some kind of sick game for you, isn't it? Wow, my mind is blown. Much like yours will be (not to mention the rest of your body) if you don't dismantle the bomb before the timer runs out.

WALKTHROUGH

Click the screw, then click the screw again, to start the game.

You start facing the front of a barber shop. You can click to zoom in on five areas: the piece of paper taped to the window to the right; the writing on the door that says "Barbar Seven"; the doormat to the bottom left; the spinning part of the barber pole; and the top of the barber pole.

The Doormat Puzzle

Zoom in on the doormat. You see a four-by-four grid with some numbers on it. You might want to write that down. Back up by clicking the "Return" button at the top right of the screen.

Zoom in on the top of the barber pole. Click the top to open it. You see in front of you a four-by-four keypad, just like the one on the doormat. But if you click the spaces corresponding to the numbers 1-7, nothing happens. The trick is...

You have to push all the buttons on the keypad, not just the numbered ones. It's like a game of connect the dots: click the space corresponding to 1, then click all the spaces in a straight line from 1 to 2, then from 2 to 3, etc., until you've pushed all the buttons.

After you've pushed the buttons correctly, the keypad lights up green and some screws are exposed. Unscrew them, then hit the "Close" button at the top right of the screen. Click the top of the barber pole again to remove the top level.

The Barber Pole Stripes Puzzle

Click twice to zoom in and uncover the next puzzle.

Now you need to enter a four-letter code. There are two rows of four blocks under where you enter the code: the top row is blue and the bottom row is red. Underneath those blocks is a little button striped just like the barber pole. Click it and it lights up.

After you've lit up the button, back up until you can see the barber pole.

Zoom in on the spinning stripes of the pole. You can now see some letters have been lit up, and that those letters are a certain color:

Red: EFGH
Blue: ABCD

Back up, then zoom in to the top of the pole.

You now have four blue letters and four red letters. These letters correspond to the blue and red blocks you see below where you enter the code. Notice that there are two blue blocks filled in and two red blocks filled in. Those are the letters you're going to use. So, if blue is on top and red is on bottom, the letters you should enter above are

AFCH

Enter those letters, and another screw will appear. Unscrew it, close the lid, then click again to reveal the next layer.

The Combination Lock Puzzle

You now see a combination lock, with the words "GIRL FEHF" at the bottom. But there are other words above the lock: "RIGHT" and "LEFT". Consider the relation between the two sets of words.

All the letters in "GIRL FEHF" can be found in either "RIGHT" or "LEFT", but not both. Whichever word, "RIGHT" or "LEFT", that the letter appears in is the direction that you should click the lock. The combination is

right, right, right, left, left, left, right, left

Unscrew the screw, close the lid, and remove that layer.

The Paper in the Window

You need another four-letter code for this one. Notice under the letters are the circled numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4. These refer to the paper in the window of the barber shop. Back up all the way from the pole and zoom in on the paper in the window.

The paper in the window has four numbered blocks on it. The blocks are divided up into pieces, and there are shapes on each piece. There is also a pair of scissors in the bottom right corner of the paper.

Don't be tempted to overthink this. You probably did stuff like this when you were a little kid in school.

Use your imagination (or a Paint-like program if you want) to cut up the first square and assemble the pieces into one big letter, by matching up the shapes (diamond with diamond, etc.). Do this with all of the squares to come up with a four-letter code.

JFUT

Now go back to the top of the barber pole and enter the code. Unscrew the screw and remove the layer.

The Bomb Puzzle

Zoom in on the box that says "WARNING". Unscrew the screws and remove the lid of the box.

You need another four-letter code.

Notice the numbers to the left. Those numbers correspond to the writing on the door of the barber shop:

BARBAR

45657
SEVEN

Meaning that B = 1, A = 2, etc.

Above where you enter the code you see four numbers: 1357. Use the number/letter pairs you got from "BARBAR SEVEN" to enter the correct code:

BREN

Click the screw under where you entered the code. The countdown will stop. Click the green button below it to remove the panel, click the screw that appears, then click again to remove the bomb section, then click again, and you're finished!

At the moment, I have the first puzzle solved:

Open the top of the barber pole.
Look at the doormat for the solution.
You need to push every button to open the lock.
Follow the numbers in a continuous path.

Also, I'm pretty sure the patterns on the door, if you cut them out and rearrange them, give you

It has to do with the words "LEFT" and "RIGHT"

Go left or right based on the words spelled below and whether the letter is in the word "Left" or "right"

Time for my first walkthrough EVAR!

1. Wait an inordinate amount of time for the 3d models to load.
2. Explore by clicking to finding the clickable spots:

Doorway, doormat, top of barber pole, middle of barber pole, and sign in window.

3. Click the top of the barber pole and continue clicking until you see a four by four grid.
4. Now, where might you have seen a grid like that...

The doormat!

The numbers tell you what order to click the squares, but...

...you have to click all the squares in a straight line between the numbers.

5. With the first puzzle done, click the screws, then click "Close", then click the top to remove the first puzzle from the "stack".
6. Click to open! A four-letter password...and red and blue boxes, as well as a picture of the barber pole design.

The design can be clicked.

After clicking the design, zoom out to the main view and click the middle of the barber pole.

2 4-letter words, one on the blue and one on the red...

These correspond to the blue and red boxes. Filled in = use the letter.

7. Another puzzle solved! Click to the next puzzle as before, and...dagnabbit. A combination lock, and words "GIRL" and "FEHF".

Experimenting with the lock reveals that there are 8 turns required.

8 turns, 8 letters...coincidence? I think not. but how to relate the letters to the directions?

The words RIGHT and LEFT are also shown...

...and each letter in GIRLFEHF occurs in either one or the other!

8. Man, that was a stretch. Click past the puzzle. Come on, bring on the bomb...dang. Another puzzle.

The only clue here is 1,2,3,4...

...which also appears on the sign in the main view.

There's also scissors and symbols on the sign. So if you cut along the lines...

...and line up the symbols WITHOUT changing the orientation of the pieces, just the position, you get letters!

9. Awesome! Another one bites the dust! Click past the puzzle again...and behold the bomb! Click the screws on the "WARNING" cover to reveal...some numbers on the left and above as the clue, with 4 letters to disarm.

The positioning of the numbers on the left looks familiar...

...just like the letters on the door! BARBAR SEVEN!

If each number lines up to the letters on the left...

...enter the letters correspnoding to the numbers above the password and it's disarmed!

10. Congrats! You're almost done! Click the screw to disarm, then the timer (over and over) to DISMANTLE it.

Any hints on the "cut out" puzzle? I really can't be bothered cutting those shapes out in real life as the review suggests and my spatial skills aren't soo up to scratch :)

General note: To remove a puzzle after you've unscrewed it, you first have to close that puzzle.

After the barberpole puzzle, you'll be given a dial marked with "Left" and "Right", and the words "GIRL FEHF."

The fact that "LEFT" and "RIGHT" are written out is important!

For each letter, see if it appears in the word "left" or the word "right", and turn it in that direction.

The next puzzle's solution is given by the paper in the window.

Cut out each shape and rearrange it so that the shapes match up, and you'll get a letter. You might want to actually print it out, or just draw the shapes on paper, or work it all out in your head.

And now, it's bomb time!

You need to turn the numbers "1357" into letters.

On the left, there's an arrangement of numbers. It's arranged the same way as a set of letters which you saw at the start of the game. Match the numbers to letters.

Right on the door of the shop: Barbar Seven!

I don't see how it's possible to press all the buttons on the grid only going in a straight line.

you begin at 1 and then click al the buttons untill you are at number 2, then you click the buttons to 3 ...untill you are at 9

I'm stuck on the fourth puzzle.

The walkthroughs say to "cut out" the shapes, but I can't find any way to cut them out. Am I actually just supposed to visualize them as cut out? It seems like trying to just imagine what letters they would make would be rather difficult, so I assume you're actually supposed to be able to cut them and move them, but nowhere I click on the paper allows me to do so.

Beat it with some help from the walkthrough, but oddly enough I used a different method to solve the third puzzle.

I doubt it was planned this way, but imagine the alphabet laid out from left to right. If you start at the beginning of the alphabet and look at each letter in the clue (GIRLFEHF), G comes after (to the right of) A, I comes after G, R comes after I, L comes before (to the left now) R, F comes before L, E comes before F, H comes after E, and F comes before H. This gives you the solution sequence (RRRLLLRL).

he Jay, I often visited your site for the last years, but rarely comment on the games (I don't know why...).

Is it just me or is this "Dismantle" the second in row which is simply too easy? I've played all of them, and always needed help... the last two were a bit disappointing.
Nonetheless looking forward for more, hoping the
next will be more challenging.

pat: Actually, this Dismantlement and the last one are the only two so far for which Kaitai has been using a new 3-D engine, with zooms in and out and so forth. The drop in difficulty is probably directly connected to the increase in graphics quality.

Oh weird!

For the GIRL FEHF puzzle, I turned according to each letter's place in the alphabet, and that worked too.

So, like, starting with A. G comes after A, so I turned right. I comes after G, so I turned right. R comes after G, right. L comes before R, so left, etc.

The actual explanation makes way more sense, but I thought that was funny. :)

Now Kaitai has only to reintroduce some physical-puzzle elements (overlapping/tangled pieces, things you can't move unless you move something else before, etc.) and he/she/they'll get close to the sheer brilliance that the first Dismantlement was...

Heh, I was going back and forth and back and forth between the doormat and the very first puzzle for about an hour, and I just could not figure it out. Thanks to Aegeus' post, after I kicked myself, I finally got to move on. I advanced at a comfortable pace through the rest after that. :P

This series is a lot of fun. I love the concept. It's a shame there weren't more of them so I'd still have a handful left to do after spontaneously finding interest in them about... two days ago? Hee hee. I eat ice cream the same way, quick bites close together. I'd finish a bowl in less than three minutes if it weren't for brain freeze.

...I just suddenly remembered I haven't dismantled the hamburger yet, and so off I go to do that.

Finding the Clues
You have to remember these clues. Saving as image file would be good.

(BARBAR: Upper line, SEVEN: Lower line)

Story huh? Being creative, I've made my own background.
I've been playing this as a detective who is on the case of a serial bomber, however he gets too close and thus the bomber decides to play a game with the detective. He sends him various gifts, and upon examining the first one, he noticed the bomb. Now every turn he makes he dismantles the strange "gifts" solving the sick puzzles as he gets closer and closer to the mad man responsible.

A couple of the puzzles had me stumped for a minute or two, but I was glad I didn't resort to a walkthrough. Not sure if I'm getting better or these are getting easier (sounds like the latter), but it still seemed like a tasty little snack. Always nice to see a Dismantlement puzzle come down the pipe.

Loved it. Back to the best. Solved the combination puzzle

Using the 'G' comes after 'A', so click right. Logic....

Thought the last puzzle was a bit easy, braced myself before clicking it, but then it was obvious as soon as I saw it.

First puzzle was an ass

Only twigged after realising it wanted all the squares pushed in

Well, you can always explain to them that, with the bomb disabled, you can undo what you did much more easily. Reassembly (remantlement?) would be much more difficult if the whole contraption had been reduced to shrapnel, y'know?

Found this one a tad bit harder - but might be because I did it much more tired than the previous ones.

The puzzles were still good, I liked the game like i did the previous installements. The only surprise for me was how easy the bomb quiz was compared to the previous episodes' bomb quizzes...

a bit tricky - but the *last* puzzle was disappointingly easy.
The scissor-hinted task wasn't that hard to solve, although it took a hint to get started...

It's rather disturbing to realize that the "GIRL FEHF" puzzle works whether you turn the dial in the direction each letter appears in or the direction each letter is in the alphabet relative to the last...

Notice how the screen shot of the game on JIG's main page says "BARBAR SEVEN" instead of BARB"E"R..I played the game yesterday and it was mispelled. Am playing it now and it is now spelled "BARBER"..Guess they spotted their error..

The whole

cutting out and lining up the letters thing

was pushing it a little far I think. Maybe I'm just not very intelligent but I would Never have worked that out haha :P good game though, do love dismantlement series :)

Learned a few things about myself today: 1) according to the post describing this game, I have genius-level spatial reasoning as I did not write down, draw, or cut out any of the figures, and 2) either I'm getting smarter, or these are getting easier as I didn't need to use any hints.

I do love these though...any game that not only entertains but also allows personal discovery is an excellent game - keep 'em coming!

Where are all you folks getting BARBAR? It is BARBER. That is what is on my window and I'm pretty darn sure that's how you spell Barber. Just wondering.

I managed to complete the GIRL FEHF combination puzzle using completely erroneous logic.

I arbitrarily started with right, then based the remainder of the directions on where each letter fell relative to the last one alphabetically. I comes after G, R comes after I, etc. This just happened to result in a combination of

RRRLLLRL,

which was correct.
