Cube Escape: Arles

DoraRusty Lake's dark and surreal escape series continues with Cube Escape: Arles, also free for iOS and Android. This time, you find yourself in a tiny apartment, surrounded by unfinished paintings and empty bottles, with only your own reflection to keep you company. To play, just tap on things to interact or pick them up, and tap the tiny black arrows at the edges of the screen to move around. You can use an item in your inventory by tapping it once to select it, and then tapping again anywhere you'd like to try to use it. As in Cube Escape: Seasons and Cube Escape: The Lake, things seem tranquil enough, but there are some disturbing themes lurking beneath the surface, which you'll probably clue into as soon as you realize where and who you are. Just keep calm, pay attention to your surroundings for clues, and try not to lose your head... or anything else attached to it.

It's not really apparent if Cube Escape: Arles fits immediately into a connected narrative with the other two games in the series, though it definitely shares a lot of the same themes. It looks gorgeous, with the slight, dreamlike distortion adding a subtle sense of wrongness to the already uneasy atmosphere, and Rusty Lake's design is simple and intuitive to use. As for the puzzles, well, while they're mostly pretty clever, including a neat spin on paint-by-the-numbers, and another where you need to use logic and math, at least one of them expects you to have a rather particular bit of knowledge for how a certain liquor is served, and others can rely on finding small items tucked around the area rather than figuring things out. Still, Cube Escape: Arles continues the high standard of otherworldly escape games Rusty Lake has already begun to become known for, with just enough strange twists to keep you hooked, and a meaty chunk of puzzles to wrap your brain around. You might need to think outside the box and get creative to find a way out, and some clues are very subtle, but if you want an escape game that marries creepy with crazy, Cube Escape: Arles is easily recommended.

Portrait pieces

There is one behind the left portrait on the wall, one behind the mirror, two behind the chair and the towel, one behind the empty vase and another one behind the blue table. The last piece can be found by putting the absinthe spoon on the glass with the sugar cube on top of it. Fill the glass with absinthe until the picture piece appears. Once you put the pieces together, click on both pictures until you find a sun flower and a golden key key.

Bottles puzzle
Find the key for the cupboard, inside the middle coat on the wall. Inside is a bottle of wine. Check under the pillows to find the absinthe bottle and finally grab the water can from the table.
Above the bed you’ll find a picture of the three bottles. The Wine bottle has horizontal lines, the water can has vertical lines and the absinthe bottle has diagonally lines. Take a look at the picture above the coats. It indicates what each bottle (and the cup) on the table should be filled with. The final result should be:

Wine in the can and the middle bottle, water in the bottle on the left and absinthe inside the cup and the bottle on the right.

Put the Sunflower in the empty vase and click on the sunflowers on the right until each one turns small. Take the key and open the other door of the cupboard. Go to the mirror and use the newly found knife to cut off the main character’s ear. Put it inside the glowing bowl and click on it. At the tunnel entrance, you’ll find a gun on the ground. Make sure you don’t miss it.
Scale Puzzle
If you click on the gray door, you’ll notice it says that the drum equals 1, while the hammer equals three. Use this information to scale the rest of the items needed. The end result is

1-4-5-8

Once you’ve gotten through the gray door, go to the mirror and shoot the shadow with the gun. Get the paintbrush from the drawer. Grab the hat from the hanger and use the golden key (from the left portrait) to unlock the door. Give the hat to the main character’s friend. Hang the palette on the uncolored painting.
Coloring the painting

One color can be found by clicking on the bottom right corner of the uncolored bottle painting. Second one is behind the left pillow. Third is on the cupboard, fourth on the table and fifth on the ceiling. The last one is on the towel.
The end result should look like this - https://jayisgames.com/images/Painting.jpg

Excellent! I absolutely love Rusty Lake games.
I can't find the...

"ql" (sky) colour reference.

Does anyone know where it is?

stemega,

I think that one's on the ceiling - try looking up from each wall.

Well, I'm stuck.

I've got a water pitcher, a brush, a paintbrush, a blank palette, a bottle of green absinthe, a bottle of red wine, and a knife. I've used all of them at least once each except for the palette and paintbrush.

I've taken a few trips through my own ear (don't ask if you don't know), shot my shadow (ditto), and gotten and placed the white cube.

...What do I do now?

Oh wow, power of posting really DOES work.

The palette goes on the black circle by the "paint by letters" picture. And it's not blank.

...and I'm out.

Compared to the last two games, the ending to this one was REALLY anticlimactic.

SonicLover, re the ending,

I agree. The highpoint was the, uh, ear-cutting scene, which was terrifically unsettling in that Rusty Lake way. The actual ending just kinda petered out in comparison.

Still a really fun and well-made game though.

Just noticed something fun.

When you are inside the ear and are doing the weight puzzle, all the items you can weigh are either puns about the ears anatomy, or the actual ear parts. The drum, The anvil, The hammer, The cochlea (Represented by the shells).

I agree about the ending. Although I did really like the

painting aspect. That was a fun and unique feature I'd never seen in a game before.

Well, the only part that stumped me was the

order of the liquids on the table. I had to watch the video walkthrough for it and I still don't see where this is revealed. I get that the paintings are clues but it's still not adding up for me.

Wow. I loved that. The puzzles made great intuitive and contextual sense.

do the shading lines tell you anything?

angled lines = absinthe, etc.

Struggling a bit with the weights -

Is the Stirrup equal to the Hammer or no? I can't tell if that's fully level but I can't get the math to work either way

Drum is 1, Hammer is 3, so...
I'm getting that the small shell is 1 [equal to drum],
the stirrup is 3 [equal to hammer],
the large shell is 4 [drum plus stirrup],
and the Anvil is then 7 [large shell + hammer]

And out. That was great - Van Gogh's story definitely works with this game designer's style.

The painting brought to mind Tomatea but in a very new [and dark] way.

Woohoo, got through it without help. The bottle puzzle really had me stumped for quite a while. That ending though... :/

I wasn't able to turn off the music. It was ok for a while but it got to be boring and then annoying.

The weight puzzle was fun.

Not sure if bug, but I can't seem to

grab the black cube from the painting. I am pretty sure it is painted right, I even checked the walkthrough video

Duh, nevermind

Somehow I didn't see that my white paint didn't stick. The paper is almost the same color!

This and "Cube Escape: Seasons" are the absolute best room escapes I've ever played! Pure magic!
