Weekday Escape

JessAs intriguing as it might be, Cosmo does not refer to the sugary-sweet beverage beloved by the chic set (escape from the $10 cocktails?). Instead, our solar system is the "star" of the show; time to bust out that 3rd grade astronomy, yes?

CosmoActually, the only real skills you'll need on this adventure are in the realm of pointing and clicking. Cosmo, from the excellent Mydia (who is also, incidentally, the creator of Room W&R), is a lovely escape game that does nearly everything right; the graphics are good, the puzzles varied and inventive, the interface clean and user-friendly. Aside from one or two of the dreaded quasi-unreasonable "leaps" of logic that tend to plague even the best escape games, Cosmo is easily one of the better room escapes to come along recently.

No backstory, not even a few confused words from the protagonist; with no explanation, Cosmo deposits you into a room filled with odd objects and devices. Strange diagrams, a video screen, a spread of brightly-colored glass dolphins…such a curious place! Of course, this room was not designed for any practical purpose. You'll need to collect items, put together puzzles and explore all facets of the room to get out. All the usual room escape goodness. Nothing really new here, but that's okay; why mess with a good thing?

Ok, I sort of lied at the beginning of the review; completing Cosmo does take just a smidgen of comprehension of mathematics and astronomy. It's very likely, however, that Google can easily provide the information you require. While I know that some prefer that escape games exist as self-contained units, able to be finished without any outside information, I personally like when developers integrate a bit of the external world into their creations (provided that the information required isn't too esoteric, of course). Doing so greatly increases the material available to the developer, thereby leading to enhanced creativity and ultimately a richer genre.

Note: Cosmo may take a while to load and does not have a loading bar on-screen, so don't fret if it seems that the game is frozen. It should load eventually.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

And I'm out!
Walkthrough for all who need it:

On the first screen

Check the large potted plant to the left of the cabinet to find a battery.

Click the top section of the cabinet; check the file holders (the things in the bottom-right section) to find a card that says "I'm in a triangle." (it's an oddly-colored spot on the file holder you reveal by clicking the one on the left to move it)

On the screen to the left of the first one

Click to the left of the small cabinet to find the "butterfly box".

Click the clock; note the mirrored numbers in the clock's frame.

Click the cabinet to get the two-dolphin art piece.

Click the top of the cabinet; the pink dolphin is hiding a paperclip. Get the paperclip.

To the left of the screen you were on

Click the oddly-shaped table twice to find the spectrum. For color-blind players note that the spectrum isn't important; it's the boxes and the order of the arrow.

Click the top section of the wine rack. Click the yellow bottle to turn its label towards you.

Click the dolphin art piece, then click "About Item". Type the mirrored numbers in left to right

629

to separate the top dolphin.

Click "About Item" on the separated dolphin and click the "split" to turn the dolphin. Click it again to open it up. Put the battery in the dolphin and click again to close.

Click the bottom of the wine rack. Number the boxes down->up on the spectrum you found earlier and you'll find the combination;

3164.

Click the button and get the key.

Click the sofa. Under the sofa you'll find a zipper without a pull. Attach the paperclip to the zipper to make a pull and... pull. Get the screwdriver.

Click the two white spots on the wall. Get the blue key that's sitting on the lower spot.

Back to the screen to the left of the first

Use the screwdriver on the screw in the shelf in the cabinet (where you got the dolphin).

Click under the shelf to get the blue tube.

Back to the first screen

Use the key you got from the wine rack on the middle section of the cabinet. Bam, desk!

Click the lamp on the desk. Click the switch to turn it on.

Turn it off, then attach the blue tube to the lamp and turn it on again. Note the coordinates. Take off the blue tube after you're done by clicking the switch and taking the tube.

On the screen to the right of the first

The dolphin is a remote. Use it on the TV.

Use the blue key on the blue spot above the TV. Put the blue tube in there.

Take out the blue tube, then click the blue button.

Back to the screen two screens to the left of the first

Click the middle section of the wine rack. Get the piece of paper that's stuck to the left side of the rack.

Now you can use the butterfly box. Click "About Item" on the box. The "I'm in a triangle." hint has to do with the password. Look at the grid formed by putting the blue tube on the TV. The two coordinates given (they're non-standard- see where 4,1 is from the piece of paper then you can tell where 2,1 is) form an isoceles triangle with which planet?

mercury

Get the key.

Back to the screen to the right of the first

Use the key you were given on the door.

You're out!

Could somebody post the answer to the color puzzle for us poor neglected colorblind folk?

Reply

I just found

a battery, a card reading "im in a triangle", a box with a butterfly and a statue of some dolphins

i think i have to put the number from the clock on the last one.

Reply

also found a

piece of paper in the bottles' stand

but i cant take it

Reply

I'm nearly done, I can feel it in my bones, but...

I know the password for the butterfly box, but when I type it in, I get a row of boxes instead of the "NG!". And the box still won't open.

Help please.

Reply

In addition to the stuff Laurakis has, I found

a pink paperclip next to the pink fish, and used it to undo the zipper under the couch. Got a screw driver from there, and used it to undo the screw that was under the dolphins. That dropped a blacklight.

And now I'm stuck again.

Reply

You're getting a row of boxes? Means it's trying to tell you something in Japanese but you don't have the font for it.

Reply

To be more specific about colors:

The color puzzle is at the bottom of the wine rack. The solution is posted on the table next to the sofa. But I can't tell what color each box is in. Perhaps I've got the whole concept wrong, but I can't go much further unless I can read the key posted on the table. Also, I'm sure that the "spectrum" way the colors are posted is meant to provide a little challenge, but for color-blind people, it's an impossible obstacle. I'm not that angry, just a little annoyed.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Reply

For all those colourblind folk.. to solve the colour puzzle:

number each dolphin 1 - 7 from left to right. Whatever numbered dolphin you need in the combination is the number of times you click. Answer:
3 1 6 4

Reply

Ehh, hope that helps.. also i think the spectrum is supposed to put you off, because it provided different colours to the ones needed for the combination.

Reply

i tried that combination that you say, but got no results on the wine rack.

Reply

Are you positive? I tried it and was successful in two seperate game windows.

Reply

Same problem as Laurakis. Put in that combo in and nothing...

Reply

Same here; worked for me.

On a different note-

Now that I've got the dolphin out of its holder and stuck the battery in it, what am I supposed to do with it?

Reply

Ack, sorry Jess, new to the spoilers game.

Reply

ohhh that makes sense actually, i have eight boxes for eight clues.

Reply

Laurakis and Gaidin: Does your colour combination go like this..:

yellow, green, orange, blue

Reply

Theory about the box password...

if you figure out what should be typed in the box... but you haven't completed everything to actually "know" what should be in the box. It gives you the boxes...

Reply

thanks for the help, i have opened it already.

Reply

Ok, so I'm stuck as stuck can be. I have...

used the blacklight to show what I think is a coordinate point.

and

battery-fied the dolphin.

but

I have not idea what to do with the "triangle" note or the other cryptic note from the desk.

Any help appreciated!

Reply

Hi

to type the code into the box you first need to click on the butterfly to clear the NG! I only wish I knew the code!!!

Reply

Ah-hah! Found out what to do with the dolphin..

It's a remote control for the television.. lol

Reply

Thanks, spindle.

Now I see what the real issue was:

The colors on the posting on the table, the colors of the dolphins and the colors on the puzzle itself did not seem the same to me, so I could not see that the sequences were the same.

I've encountered this problem before in games: when colors important to puzzles appear in different shades and consistencies, it throws color blind people off, because where we can't see the exact hue, we use shade and consistency to distinguish between colors.

And I guess I technically could have wrapped my brain around this puzzle in such a way that I didn't need to see the colors correctly to solve it, but I would have had to go without certain clues to help me make connections.

Anyway, back to the game.

Glad to have helped Jose :D

I've got:

-blacklight bulb
-dolphin statue

I've got the blacklight message (2,1) and now
can't figure the next step.

Any hints?

Hi, I need a bit of help.

I've got

The butterfly box.
The note saying "I'm in a triangle".
The co-ordinates from the table.
The co-ordinates from the scrap of paper.
The solar system map with blacklight grid.

I'm guessing I need a third set of co-ordinates, and then I plot a triangle on the map. But there doesn't seem to be anywhere left to look!

Reply

I have all clues except one and am stuck on the screen part.. any hints? I have..:

Brought up the grid on the screen with the solar system, i have two coordinates of (1,4) and (2,1). What can I do with those coordinates?

Reply

Ohhhh..:

I think the coordinates are supposed to lead you to the planet which is the password for the butterfly box, though i already had figured out the password way before that. But i opened the box and escaped using the key.

This is the only room escape i've ever finished alone.. heh. Although some of it was a bit obscure it was pretty good on the whole.

Stuck, please help.

I've gotten screwdriver, black-light, battery, paperclip, pyramid-paper, box, blue key, red key and dolphin statue.

Read the blacklight message and think I found the clock numbers.

Once, I managed to get the box to show (by clicking the plant?), asking me for input. But never got it to show again.

How do I open the dolphin statue? How do I get the paper in the bottle holder?

Reply

Wow. I managed to miss the "About Item" button until I read the walkthrough :)

Reply

Although, Jamar..:

When you explain the code for the wine rack, you should have also included the colour combination, some players might get confused with the numbers, seeing only colours.. for those who are just a little slow or lacking in logic :)

Reply

True,

but my monitor's going a bit weird (I'm getting it checked out today) so I just included the numbers in case I mention the colors and they turn out to be wrong.

Reply

I don't get it

I worked out the butterfly box entry and got the door key, which was the name of the planet in between the three lines (one from the co-ordinates, one from the cosmological symbols, the remaining to close the gap), but I was missing an item at the end. I think it was the third one down on the right-hand side. Did I miss something?

A note on the butterfly box:

If you haven't completed all the steps, the box won't open for you, even if you enter the right planet, and will instead show you dots or empty squares on its screen. Be sure to turn on the blacklight and collect the paper from the wine rack.

Reply
Pieter8888 February 11, 2009 2:18 PM

The answer that gives you the dots IS the right answer:

you just need the two coordinates first!

Reply

When you say it takes a while to load, do you mean from the blue screen right at the start, or the starry screen with "Cosmo" written across it? Only I've been at the cosmo screen for 5 minutes, and my net connection really shouldn't take THAT long!

Reply

I'm annoyed by the "dot" answer because there seems to be another clue that gives the answer.

One of the magazines on the bookshelf shows the astrology symbols for Jupiter connected with a line to the symbol for Venus. On the screen Mercury is in between Jupiter and Venus.

Reply
Alchemy101 February 11, 2009 4:49 PM

For those struggling getting the second coordinates:

The piece of paper stuck in the wine rack needs to released. The trigger shows up right about the time when having that coordinate would be useful.

The purple button above the TV screen, next to where you plug in the blacklight.

Reply

Got about halfway through, when the color puzzle at the wine rack had me stumped... Nice walkthrough, Jamar!

Is it me or in almost every room escape game is there a plant with something in it?

@Xixen- if tere's the word "Start" below the word "Cosmo" click it and you'll start the game.

Xixen - it took a long while to load the game the first time I tried to access the game, so be patient and it will eventually load.

The time required does not seem to be dependent upon your own Internet connection, but rather on the hosting site.

paper out of the wine rack

Reply

JBoy:

I also thought I had an empty box at the end, but I eventually realized it had contained the blacklight. Maybe same for you? Sorry if not! Don't remember exactly where my empty spot was...

Reply

As I understand the solution to the planet puzzle:

The first clue is the slip of paper from the books on the bookshelf. It's a bit of a pixel hunt to find it. I had luck clicking right on the slightly thicker blue line between two of the books.

The paper shows the astrological signs for Jupiter and Venus. Those are two points of the triangle referred to in the other note.

The third point is found by using the two coordinate references. The reference on the scrap found in the wine rack is just to orient you one the grid. By using that as your base point, you can calculate which grid crossing is the one named by the set of coordinates revealed by the blue light. That's the third point of the triangle.

Mercury is the planet located in the middle of the triangle formed by those three points.

It would have been better if you could draw the actual lines on the planet map, instead of just having to visualize them.

I actually stumbled on the answer by accident the first time, and had to go back and play again to figure out why that was the correct answer.

Reply

Concerning the "missing" item:

Yeah, the blacklight's a bit of an odd duck. When you use it somewhere, it disappears completely. That's because it's meant to be used more than once, so it couldn't gray out when it leaves your inventory; you need to use it again later

Reply

Am I the only one who just can't figure out the coordinate system? I've been doing fine, but even the walk-through's explanation of how the scrap of paper provides the key to the "unusual" graphing system has me stumped. I just don't see how that piece of paper is the key to anything. I've picked up on the passcode from reading spoilers, but I really want to understand the puzzle! Anyone? Pleeeease?

Reply

The scrap shows you where 4,1 is (it corresponds to a part of the TV screen; the bright point noted by the scrap as 4,1 would be near the top of the sun on the TV's coordinate grid). From there you can figure out where 1,2 (the coordinate gained by sticking the blue tube on the desk lamp) is and from there it's not too much work to find the planet that fits into that triangle.

And I do apologize for the fact that my walkthrough still leaves you stumped. Or if my explanation doesn't help all that much. To be quite honest I first stumbled upon the answer by trial-and-error; it was only looking more closely at what I had gathered that it all made sense.

Reply

I CANNOT get the game to load!!! Looks and sounds like fun, but I've been waiting for hours!

Reply

I've got the same problem as some others

I can't detach the piece of paper from the winerack, so have one empty box in the inventory and can't activate the code

Reply

@Jamar --

In your walkthrough, you mention using a

paperclip

to open the

zipper under the couch

. Where does that come from, though?

Reply

Ah. Random clicking around yielded it for me. (Power of the post, I'm tellin' ya.)

The paperclip can be found with the pink dolphin on the clear countertop along the same wall as the clock.

Reply

Hmmm? I'm pretty sure I clearly mentioned that in the walkthrough. But because I go through screen by screen you may have missed the part

where I tell you where the paperclip is

if you didn't read from the relevant part.

@Jamar --

Well, I'm a dumbass! Or cross-eyed or slightly dyslexic or something. I combed through your walkthrough I lost count of how many times and it just got lost in my blind spot or something. Sorry about that! Yeah, I see it *now*.

Reply

That "I'm a Triangle" clue was completely weird. I liked the game, but that didn't make any sense at all...

The coordinates don't follow any rules of math with which I PERSONALLY am familiar, and as far as I know, I haven't forgotten how to count graph lines. Awful part of the puzzle, and what's even better, the Walkthrough doesn't tell you the planet, so even with using it for that part, I still had to blindly guess because it left out the reasoning I was hoping for.

So yes, definitely not my favorite Room-Escape Game.

Reply

I agree with Jacob's comment... Cosmo's only difficulty was in its arbitrary "clues" and rigid heirarchy of puzzle solving steps.

Perhaps Cosmo's developer meant to prevent walk-through use by requiring you completed each step in a particular order, but the logic behind that strict progression was very loose.

Vision remains my all-time favorite and Neutral's escape games the best... although there are a few other designers out there that come in at a close second.

Reply

@Jacob- Really? Blind guessing was unnecessary if you looked toward the end of my walkthrough.

The second-to-last step shows you the password and my reasoning behind it.

Reply

Hi There. This might be irrelevant at this point (I'm just getting to this game and had the same points of confusion as a lot of others here). I discovered two key points that I missed earlier.
First,

the colour code for the wine puzzle can be connected back to

the line of colourful dolphins on the glass top cupboard. The clue on the side of the little glass table tells you what dolphins to use in what order which gives you the colours that the little circles are supposed to be.

Second,

The coordinates for the TV solar system all revolve around

the piece of paper from the wine stand. The paper shows a part of the picture with grid and shows that that particular square is (1,4). Because the clue tells you this part, the other coordinates (2,1) can be deduced from this point (i.e. if this box is (1,?), then (2,?) is one square to the right (for x,y coordinates) and if this box is (?,4) then (?,1) is three boxes below (since y=0 starts at the bottom and then goes up as the numbers get bigger)). However, that's as far as I get. I do not know where the third coordinate comes from.

I've solved the puzzle from the spoilers and walkthrough but since I don't understand how I got there, I don't feel like I "solved" the puzzle.

Reply

guys, there's

another clue for the tv coordinates

it's in the book at the cabinet at first screen - click on it and when you open it, it will show

symbol for jupiter and mercury

i didn't get the coordinates either, but this helped

Reply

I think I get the reasoning of the coordinate.

You have to combine the clues from the planet symbols, the "I'm in a triangle" paper and the coordinate.

First, you deduce from the little piece of paper(1,4) where (2,1) should be. Never mind (1,4) then. (2,1) is one point of a triangle.

Second, found the book in which there are two planet symbols. One is Jupiter and another is Venus, not mercury.

Now Jupiter, Venus and (2,1) form a triangle. Mercury is the planet "in a triangle".

Reply

It took me an hour, but I managed to solve it on my own! ^_^ Good little game, actually - no excessive pixel-hunting, just good puzzles (your explanation is basically what I came up with too, Greenfield).

Very minor bug:

After putting the blue light in the cabinet, if you check the cup on the unit next to the cabinet, or look in the books in the cabinet, the cabinet may reset to having the original (white) light. This can easily be remedied by checking the plant on the unit next to the cabinet, the plant on the other side of the cabinet, or turning to face a different part of the room, though.

Reply

Spindle's code worked for me too. Thanx!!

so I got the key, unlocked the cabinet, put in the black light and got the code (2,1). Seems like graphing coordinates to me....

Thanx again, I was stuck b/c i thought it wanted u 2 think of the seven squares as roygbiv and use them for the wine rack.

I found another hierarchy bug/mistake, and a very annoying one...

I figured the 3 numbers for the white 2-dolphin statue by looking at the clock - simply saw the reversed numbers. However entering the right numbers didn't work in the statue. Reason??? You need to check the "CLOCK" label in the bottle before the combination gets to work in the 2-dolphin statue!!!

Wow, that made me remain stuck for a big while and finally had to look at the walkthrough, so my gaming experience was ruined...

Also the last part about

the solar system grid

was messy as hell...

I'm familiar too with maths and coordinate systems, but the un-logic twist was about figuring out that the (2,1) coordinate was indeed part of the triangle whereas (1,4) was just to reference the system and not at all part of the triangle. Logic made me look for a third coordinate... somewhere in the opposition of Jupiter and Venus??? Elsewhere???

Even reading many of your comments and the full walkthrough, it was difficult to see, however in the end you see the little tiny bit of logic, but too messy!!!
