Weekday Escape

JessSometimes, to amuse myself, I make up little stories as to why an escape game protagonist might have ended up in his or her current situation, or flesh out in my mind the scenario that is already given. I've come up with pretty fun and random stuff... Charismanever, however, have I concocted anything as sublimely bizarre, as cheerfully surreal, as what Gump has created with Charisma.

In Charisma, you play an orange-jumpsuited, blue-afroed dude who is trapped within what appears to be a combination living room/recording studio. There is a second gentleman inscrutably watching you from behind a glass partition, his hand poised above two buttons. He, for whatever reason, is not going to be of any help (and, in another departure from reality, smashing the glass and demanding he release you is not an option). So, it's up to you to explore the room, figure out what he wants and, eventually, set yourself free.

You probably won't find this last task too tough. While Charisma's puzzles are nicely concocted and enjoyably creative, they are also fairly simple "connect item A to object B to solve C"-type problems. The game is also quite short, and (assuming you don't run into undue difficulties) will probably take you about 20 minutes to solve. Despite these things, however, Charisma is probably my favorite GUMP production; this is mainly due to its joyful, strange, utterly out-of-nowhere ending. I won't go into detail, but I will say this: it might take you a few times to get right, but it's worth it.

Like all of Gump's other games, Charisma is quite polished and professional-looking, with cleanly stylized graphics and a flawless interface. The quirky soundtrack nicely fits the game's overall theme, and there's a helpfully-provided save feature. All in all, everything just works really nicely together, creating a seamless whole. Enjoy!

Time to make some beautiful music:

Play Charisma

Cheers to Diandra and Martha for sending this one in! =)

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

I think I can write a walkthrough for this, no problem. And you know what happens when SonicLover writes a walkthrough...

Jeff said I was losing charisma, so he locked me in the recording studio until I could satisfy him. As the lead singer for the band, it's important that I be on top of my game, but still, isn't that a bit harsh? I mean, the studio wasn't even ready for recording yet, so I had work to do.

First, I followed the tradition of many room-escapers and searched the wastebasket for something useful. Lo and behold, there was a piece of paper with some chess pieces on it. Nothing else of note was visible from the couch, so I turned right. Now I was facing the mic stand, but there was no microphone. Peering behind the plant pot, I found an odd square piece. Pocketing that, I backed away and turned right again to face Jeff in the mixing room, then right again to face the green cabinets.

A blue key lurked under the red and blue books, and a star-shaped piece rested next to the right speaker. The key matched the right cabinet, inside which was a CD with an interesting design on it. This design was the combination for the dial safe to the right; left button to turn left, right button to turn right, read from the outside in. But really, who else uses that safe? How hard is it to write "R7 L9 R6 L6" on a pice of paper instead of hiding it on a CD design?

But I digress. Opening the safe, I found a mic and a hexagonal piece, and on the ceiling of the safe I discovered a gold coin. That was all of interest in there, so I closed the safe and turned right. The picture on the wall corresponded with the paper from the trash. I can't say I know why Jeff threw away something so important, but it was a magic square: every column and row added to 24. Thus, queen-rook-knight-pawn-king became 5-1-3-6-6, the combination for the keypad safe by the cabinets.

The keypad safe contained a lever that didn't work and a red key. While I was over there, I opened the CD player and put the CD in, then put the mic in the stand and practiced our lyrics, only to have Jeff buzz me before I reached the second verse. Apparently my charisma was still lacking. No problem; I have my ways.

The red key didn't match the cabinets, bit it worked in a keyhole in the floor near the picture of the chess pieces. Now the lever in the keypad safe worked, revealing an energy drink machine where the keyhole had been. I habitually checked the coin return chute for loose change, and found a yellow key instead, which matched the left cabinet. Inside I found a box with three slots, in which the three yellow shapes I'd found fit nicely. Pressing the latch button, I recovered a silver coin.

The silver coin and the gold coin entered the vending machine's coin slot, and I purchased one of each kind of Energy Z and opened them both. The blue I drank myself; the green I poured into the soil of the flowerpot as part of my good luck ritual. With that done, I went back to the microphone and sang my song again. This time, Jeff accepted it with an O, and let me out. "Pa-Pa-Pa Supercar" will be the best hit ever to grace the music stage, I'm sure of it!

Brain must not be working too well today. I have:

folded paper with numbers and chess pieces, key(used, CD/DVD, puzzle piece?

Reply

I have run into an undue problem, regarding the Energy Z machine. (Since it's always in his games, I took it to be a given to justify my lack of spoiler tags) I've only gotten one of the two cans, which leads me to one conclusion:

During the game, you get a CD. You're supposed to examine it, and can put it in a CD machine to play music during your karaoke time on the mic. Either that or the locket must have some other use, but I can't seem to find them.

Also, I would like a translation of the, uh, audible dialogue that goes on later on in the game... Just so I know what's happening.

Reply

I'm stuck there:

I have found the 2 keys, the piece of paper, opened both safes, put the mic on the stand and used the key on the trap on the floor.

Now I have only a gear and the paper in my inventory and nothing seems to be available. Any clues on what to do next?

I have also spoken in the mic and the guy pushed the red button.

There also seems to be

something hidden in the flower pot, but I didn't find the way to take it.

Reply

Thanks, Gar. Your post helped nudge me in the right direction with one of the objects in my inventory.

Glomer:

The chess piece sheet is a sudoku. Start by looking at the line that has nothing but numbers, then at the ones with the chess pieces on them. After that, look at the painting above the chair, then the safe with the code.

Also, there are two more puzzle pieces, also behind objects. For those among you who are looking in all the wrong tiny places,

one is behind the flowerpot, another is between the books, and the third is between the right-most sub-woofer and the cabinet.

Reply

Glomer:

The paper is for the top safe, the CD helps you with the bottom one.

If that doesn't help,

The paper has a magic square on it: all the numbers and variables add up to a certain number.

I like Gump games, but finding

the gold coin

was much harder for me than the rest of the game. I'm with tishy on the song, though. Best part. "oh...hanker monaco grand prix..."

Reply

SidA:

The gold coin's presumably what I can't find as well.

May I have a hint?

Reply

Man, I can't seem to find the

square-ish puzzle piece, the last one I need to open the round box. I hate pixel hunting games.

Reply

ok i found

the 3 puzzle parts by cheating and using Gar's spoilers.. lol.. now i'm still stuck.. (btw, i also have a CD that i tried putting in the CD player while signing and the guy still pushes the red button..)

Reply

Found the last piece, finished the game. As I said before, I hate pixel hunting!

Reply

yay! i finally

openned the trap on the floor. But even after

drinking the energy z thingy, the guy still doesn't like the song.. :(

I'm looking for

the gold coin

and

a way to get whatever is in the sunflower pot out.

I am willing to admit that answering the second will immediately answer the first.

Also, where is the gold coin?

Oooohhh. A walkthrough that explains everything in detail, yet all some of us needed was one sentence of it. Thanks, though. That sentence was just what I needed!

thanks soniclover! i just needed the last step it seems.. lol

nice song o.O

is it because english is not my first language, or the lyrics are merely understandable? i mean.. i get the idea, but do the sentences make any sense?

anyway.. thanks for the game! it was fun! :)

Um...maybe I'm crazy but how exactly do you look at the things you find? I have a folded piece of paper that's currently useless to me because I can't read what's inside, and a CD with markings on it that's too small in the inventory to make out what they are.

..so baffled.

I ended up finishing on my own, but not without using the

spacebar

trick. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't be able to finish due to the pixel hunting. I mean in real life, who wouldn't be able to

notice things behind the flowerpot or on the top of the safe

?, that's rather silly. But a cool game with a cool concept and different ending compared to most escape games.

I reloaded the game..worked out puzzle again..entered solution...lever..nada

Am I doing something stupid? is there a button to press? Do I put the numbers in a diff oreder?

HILARIOUS! I loved this game. The only problem I had was

the "chess" puzzle - I thought of every possible solution that involved chess movements just because chess pieces were used as symbols. I wish shapes would have been used instead...

But other than that the game was awesome!

Escapee 24230! I did reasonably well on this one; didn't have to check the walkthrough until I was a little over halfway through. Some of it was just pixel hunting and the rest of my problem was that I was still thinking in puzzle solving mode rather than "set everything up for ending of happiness" mode. It was short and entertaining enough that neither hang-up bothered me all that much.

My only problem, aside from several pixel hunts, was that I thought I had a screwdriver (albeit missing the screwy bit) in my inventory. Folks, that is not a screwdriver!

I need help severely!!

Everytime I enter the combination on the bottom safe, even if i enter it backwards, forwards, inside out, outside in, every way possible, it never opens!!! What in the world am i doing wrong??

Reply

That ending is mint...the game itself, alright. I'm sadly used to the pixel-hunting, but I still got stumped here:

A coin taped to the top of the inside of a safe?!

Sabrina:

Each arrow on the CD has a number of small circles at the end opposite the arrowhead and a direction - clockwise corresponds to the right button on the safe, anticlockwise to the left, and the small circles show how many times to press that button. Work from the outside of the CD in, then click on the safe's handle.
