It's the classic story. Boy goes adventuring, boy gets trapped in a cube (nevermind how), boy faces danger and must use his wits and never-ending supply of crates to escape. Though really it's your cleverness that is needed to get the boy out in Box! an interesting and engaging puzzle platform game created by Jeremy Cytryn, Renchu Song, Sam Chen and Will Peck, with art by Kevin Ma and Natalie Diebold, and music from Brigid Choi. Use the [arrow] keys to walk and jump. Press [space bar] to deploy a box in the direction you are facing, and again to destroy a box you are looking at, including ones above and below you. Use [WASD] to look around the corners of the cube to see what's ahead, or to make sure you won't die a fiery death if you drop down.
Don't worry if it sounds complicated, it's really not, and the game explains it very nicely as you go. If you need to, you can hit [R] to reset the whole level or [T] to reset the face of the cube you are on. For some, the biggest challenge can be the changing perspective while navigating the maze. You may cross the screen thinking you're oriented one way, only to find out the box hadn't rotated how you thought it should have. Pulling crates out of my magical Mary Poppins backpack to make my own platforms is fun, and the mechanics for doing so, as well all the other controls, are easy and intuitive. It's also great to be able to reset the screen as opposed to the whole level if you make a non-fatal mistake. The levels get trickier and more interesting as you go, with falling blocks and fireballs as obstacles to overcome, making the peek around the corner mechanic essential. With a great soundtrack, smooth controls, and puzzling levels, Box! is a polished little game definitely worth your time.
Made it to level 15 and got bored there to be honest.
Game needs a constant on-screen indicator showing the current rotation of the exit.
So basically cardboard box assembler / boxgame with the aesthetic of fez and a tad of minecraft for good measure. Not that I'm complaining.
I quit on 18 as I'm convinced its bugged (I'm riding on top of a falling stone yet it still kills me??)
You survive by holding right when falling from previous screen.
(Not a spoiler as this musty be considered a bug).
Stuck on 17. Can't remove blocks above when they are in scene above. Am I missing something that I should be able to do?
You should be able to remove boxes above by looking up with w and pushing the space bar. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be working.
Have to use the W key, not the up arrow when it is in the scene above. Thanks Kimberly!
