JayAfter successfully defeating the ginormous Gi8000 in the first mission, Bowja the Ninja is back again and this time it's Bigman's Compound that is the target of ninja stealth and fortitude. Help Bowja defeat Bigman and save innocent people before it's too late in this charming new adventure from Pencilkids.

Bowja the Ninja 2: In Bigman's Compound is a series of point-and-click puzzle vignettes that are all magnificently illustrated and animated by Robin Vencel. Responding to criticism that the first mission was a tad on the easy side, Robin has included a variety of puzzles that, while still easy to complete without a walkthrough, will surely make you think. Much of the difficulty in the game is a matter of finding the correct spot to click to help little Bowja advance, with some situations that require proper timing to find the correct solution. Be alert, don't panic, and use your resources to their full advantage and you'll be neutralizing henchmen, taking control of missiles, and escaping deadly sharks like a good little ninja.

Henchman's Journal

Team Bravo just retrieved the missile and is on their way back here. It's a long train ride. I'm watching them with binoculars... uh-oh, I just saw a plane take off and aim for the train. It better not be who I think it is...

I heard about Bowja's exploits on Factory Island. In fact, lots of us used to work there, and kept our purple uniforms when we moved here. Unfortunately they aren't quite as protective against Bowja's arrows as they used to be. He must've upgraded them or something. Oh, and we need to get that signal switch on the missile truck lubricated. Once it's down, it's almost impossible to get it back up, and you have to stand on the missile to get enough leverage to do so. Imagine if you were standing there and a small bump shook the missile... it wouldn't be pretty.

We really need to get that searchlight tower fixed. The searchlight shakes easily, and it doesn't illuminate the lake below the bridge. Also, whose bright idea was it to post the searchlight shutdown code on the side of the tower? I mean, I know we're always forgetting, but isn't it a little too easy to see? Oh well, as long as nobody thinks to read it from top to bottom, we're safe.

It's so annoying working with that raised bridge. Whenever I want to lower it, I have to climb up, throw the lever to release the catch, turn the wheel to lower the bridge, climb down again, then cross. It's so tiring! Also, the old power pole and the drainpipe are both very loose. Who knows when they might fall down...

The purple swamp robot is too weak, especially in the mouth. Just driving a bicycle or some other vehicle into its mouth would destroy it completely. Also, how come the Henchman's Handbook specifically told us to leave chests containing grappling hooks in convenient locations, but it didn't say anything about swimming lessons? What happens if I fall in the water? And what's the point of a grappling hook if the rope's so short that you have to stand on something for it to reach anything?

The satellite dish needs better mountings. A little bump to it would easily make it swing down and hit someone in the head. Also, what's with the dish control panel? It's too confusing. Not only do the symbols have to be connected with their matches, but they have to look exactly the same for the lever to work. That's just stupid. I'm not getting paid enough to work for idiots. I hope someone pushes Bigman into the water.

I hear the walkway broke again. Someone really needs to repair that thing. Also, the water around here is annoyingly viscous. If you shoot at any underwater target, you can't hit it unless you shoot from very close to the water's surface. I don't care if we're evil henchmen, we need to do our part against water pollution!

Aargh, those ads are clogging up the aqueducts... anyways, I can never remember that some levers work miracles if pulled more than once. And why do they put the wheel that opens the "V" hatch so far away from the hatch itself? And why is the design of the wall lock so counter-intuitive? You'd think the letters would correspond to the positions of the buttons and the numbers would indicate the order in which you pressed them, but noooo, it's the other way around...

The robot spider is another example of our shoddy mechanical abilities. Its leg joints are loose; someone could unscrew them easily. And if someone were to ram its eye to rip it off, then go inside, they would be able to disable the thing easily.

The missile is lost. Our complex is in ruins. Bigman's best suit is ruined by water contamination. The satellite dish is turned off so I can't connect to the Internet to play that new game, Bowja the Ninja in Bigman's Compound. One of our boat-planes has been stolen. And our best guard robots are kaput. I give up. I'm quitting. If my next job as an evil henchman doesn't work out, I'll look into a career as a pastry chef.

ok, while as a point and click game, it is still quite a good game, i must say that there were times when i just got fed up with it, either because of the repetition, or because the bosses were so stupidly awkward (if you've finished it you'll know what i mean). i do think that the first one was better in the sense that it actually kept me wanting to play it.

Sadly, I'm gonna need help for the tower at the bridge.

I get that the signs on the tower are a hint for the Lights Out puzzle, BI, AII and CIII. So I try pressing B1, A2 and C3. As soon as I have pressed two buttons, it just resets. So I can't figure out how this puzzle works. :(

ThemePark June 27, 2008 5:50 AM

Figures, Power of Post strikes again. For those who are stuck there as I:

The Roman Numerals do not indicate what order to press the buttons, just which buttons to press. Press the buttons in order from top to bottom as they appear on the tower.

Does anyone know how to get past the fat man? I've tried

using the grappling hook to get up, then hitting the satellite dish so that it hits the fat man,

but I have no idea what to do after that.

I've tried pulling the lever on the right, but it always goes back to its original position, and I've also tried hitting the set of buttons on the left (behind the fat man) but it doesn't work.

Can anyone help me?

I really like the concept and the playing style of these two games, in some ways what you are meant to do is often the most intuitive thing... and it works, which is nice... however the designer really needs to cut back on the pointless animations... as you spend most of your time watching the repeated animation (before clicking to another website in boredom)... the last boss in particular is a pain and I can't believe the designer felt it was a good idea to leave it that way?

Reply
Patreon Crew SonicLover June 27, 2008 7:08 AM

Would you rather the boss just stood there and waited helplessly to be defeated?

Reply

I agree with Edd in that it's a really nice combination of styles and was a very satisfying interactive cartoon. The animation was lovely as was the characterisation.

I have to say that I forgive the game design of the final bosses although I agree it's somewhat infuriating the extended action bits (i.e. click here to experiment then have to go through 20 seconds of action each time you are wrong, but again the intuitive side mostly helped me through.

A very good piece of work at the very least.

Well... Maybe some of you dont know how to solve the first puzzle machine... YOu know the place, you have to go underwater. Its simple, cause there are some Letters and numbers written on the "tower". A II, C III, B I. The I's stands for numbers in the rome numbers. I = 1, II = 2 & III = 3. A 2, C 3, B . Its simple, A, B & C its the rows (The line that goes down from left side) & II, III & I for the columns (The line that goes from left to right)... Simple.

1. Click on the second button on the first raw
2. Click on the third button on the last raw
3. Click on the first button on the second raw

Hope it helped.. ;)

But, could someone give a walkthrough for the second puzzle machine, that is placed at the top of a house.. PLZ!

For those with problems after getting rid of the fat man,

the buttons do not need to be in the same order as the other side. Follow the wires from the permanent buttons to figure out which button should go where.

Well you see it says to do that i've tried it and it still does back to the original position. so i'm really stumped about that

Reply

I have to agree with Edd about the long animated scenes during the boss fights, it's irritating to have to sit there and hear that annoying screech, climb back up (hup-uh), and do it all over again.

It might be better if you could act throughout the whole thing, while the monster is moving, with Bowja automatically dodging exactly when the attack would have hit him instead of always getting knocked over and falling in the water (he is a ninja, after all), taking only one second or so. This would avoid the 'boss just sits there helplessly' issue mentioned by SonicLover while still cutting down on long waiting times during the battle.

For some reason, when I click the link to play the game, I get a dialog box that wants me to save or "Open With..." the .swf file. If I download it, I get an unplayable file called "Bowja 2 IBC ads.swf" on my desktop. I'm in FF3 on WinXP, and I know I have Flash installed.

Is this a problem with the link, do I need something else installed, or what?

Reply
Dan Someone June 28, 2008 1:23 PM

As with many Windows things, restarting (in this case restarting FF) fixed the problem.

Reply

First of all, it's "Bigman", not "Fatman".

Secondly, the repetitive boss animations and passwords written right on the machines which they're for does look more "Dumbed down" than usual pointy-clicky adventure game fare, but so are the guards that just shake their fists and complain when they spot Bowja: it takes refuge in its cuteness and adorable charm.

Thirdly, for all of said charm, the timer mainly timed the waiting the players did while stuff happened; a bit of the first game's appeal came from its lackadaisical, take-your-time-and-view-the-funny-stuff approach instead of a, "C'mon, move your tiny ninja fanny and nudge that guy's balance off already" kind of mindset.

"get out. all the way out. What's that supposed to mean!?!?!?!?!"

It is a reference to the walkthrough.

When you are in the underwater tunnel, and you have opened up the second hatch, you need to then get out.

To do that, click on the very left side of the tunnel (there is an arrow that will appear when you mouse over it), pull the lever in that small room (I think), and then swim out the top.

As soon as I typed in my previous comment, of course it loaded fine for me! After months of trying...

I used the other link and it popped up instantly. Hooray, off to play!

I can't get past the metal squid--driving me crazy.

By "unscrew the leg" do you mean fire an arrow at the large circles at the squid's joints? Cause that's not working.

HELP!!!

I can't figure out how to get out to the plane from the underwater part. I did the machine thing but I couldn't find anything to help with getting out.

To beat the spider/squid...

Click the right joint that's underwater first. Bowja will go underwater, unscrew the joints on both right legs, and resurface. This will collapse the spider/squid so that the upper joint is now underwater. Click on that joint, and the spider/squid will collapse further. THEN you can get in the plane and ram the thing.

someone should post a more thourough walkthrough of the underwater part. Even with the walkthrough, I had to do a lot of guessing.

Dear anelson, I just wanted to say that that I got past the fat man. Simple. Here's the walkthrough to get past him:

1. Shoot satellite to knock him over.

2. Shoot the fat man 2 times.

See, I told you it's simple!!

Whoa, what a crazy, last boss that was...After I killed it, it looked like it was having a cesure...Just, WHOA. O.o But overall, it was a pretty, sweet game. (Besides the last part...that was DISTURBING!) Thanks for the walkthrough!(Although you need to pimp it a little bit.
