Blue Cage

DoraThe sun is shining and the birds are singing, so naturally it's a beautiful day to lock yourself inside a room lacking any basic amenities whatsoever! In TomaTea's Blue Cage escape game, the door is once more locked, and you find yourself trapped in a place that looks like Snow White and the Smurfs had a fight on how to design a tea room. It's beautiful, sure, with its soft pastel colours and fairytale furniture, but nobody can live on quaint birdhouses and mosaic artwork alone, so you'll need to explore to find a way out. The tip of your cursor will light up with a faint glow if you can interact with something by clicking, and objects in your inventory can be examined and manipulated up close by clicking the little "i" icon that appears when you mouse over them. Doing so is important since this can often wind up revealing different uses for the items you've got. Clues for solving the puzzles you're faced with are hidden around the room, sometimes in plain sight, sometimes with more subtlety, so you'll need to think carefully about everything you're seen if you want to find a way out.

Blue Cage is a gorgeous little game with its whimsical design and presentation, but it might also be the first TomaTea game that had me scrambling for the mute option in the menu after just a few seconds, since the short chirping birds loop wears out its welcome quickly compared to the soundtracks we've had in the past. You'll still encounter the dreaded "I have no idea how to solve this!" message if you haven't seen the clue you need for a particular puzzle, but at the same time, Blue Cage still feels a bit more challenging than some of the developer's other titles by being less obviously linear by having more items to use scattered about right off the bat, so you have to think about your inventory and how it might relate to your environment as opposed to just going from puzzle to puzzle in a clear and obvious progression. It's a more careful balance between item puzzles and puzzle locks this time around, and has a surprising amount of sneaky complexity in some areas to boot that will force you to really scour every nook and cranny and get creative with your inventory. Once you've found your way out, maybe open a real door and step outside into the real world for a bit, too. Living birds are considerably sweeter on the ear than electronic ones, and they have more variety to their playlist, too.

OK, I have:

chair with leg removed, chair leg + bracket + bolt = hook, unsharpened pencil, locked diary and screwdriver

I am totally stuck. Help!

I'm right with you, Shanisek. I'm wondering if we screwed up (pun intended) by

Maybe we needed it to get something else.

Once you unlock the diary, you can decode the bottom drawer combination with the horoscope signs.

Horoscope code:

Taurus, Aries, Capricorn

Take the piece from the drawer and put in on the grid underneath the birdhouse.

You'll then need to complete a Picross puzzle. It's a little hard to explain, but the basics is that each row or column corresponds to how many squares (and spaces) are in each row/column.

Reply
baileydonk June 10, 2014 11:58 AM

I'm in the same place as cstar now. Can't figure out the significance of the

purple lamp.

dannyboy_588 June 10, 2014 11:59 AM replied to baileydonk

You get the button by

solving the puzzle under the bird.

To do that, you need to

cut down the key with the knife and

use the key with the blacklight lamp to get the 4-digit code.

hope a walkthrough is not too far off. :)

That was pretty damn convoluted for TomaTea.

I especially had trouble with the one puzzle that required that

I not only knew what the various signs of the zodiac meant but also what those drawings were supposed to represent

Also I think I probably hold the record for how many times

I had that chair leg off and on again!

Not my favourite of theirs I must say.

Reply
IcyJack June 10, 2014 2:20 PM

@merchantfan

Congrats on your work so far. Open up the diary and take a look at the first page. See something familiar?

The birds' bow ties resemble the buttons on the birdhouse.

Put in the green slat found under the pillows first, prop up the bird on the slat, then put in the bowtie code, two bowties, so...

right, middle, left, right, middle, left, enter.
Use the key on the bird.

OK, this is my new favorite TomaTea escape: it has a freakin' picross puzzle!!! (A multi-color one, no less!) And it has one of the gorgeous eggs from Easter Joy, although not for long.

The most important hint is what cstarr posted:

Who says you need to take the key down to use it?

There is a bit of outside knowledge involved, namely

the horoscope animals: you need to know that Taurus is a bull, Aries is a ram, and Capricorn is a goat.

@Paul: hang in there, I'm sure someone will write a walkthrough for you. (I'm a bit busy, but if there isn't one by tomorrow, I'll see what I can do.) In the meantime, where are you stuck currently? Tell us what items you have, what you've used, etc. and we'll nudge you in the right direction.

Hi Paul,

Just give it a little time. If no one posts a walkthrough by tonight, I'll make one. I actually prefer folks wait a bit before posting solutions and walkthroughs so they can focus on playing it together and having fun with smaller hints. That's the best part about playing an escape "live" with a web community.

If you'd rather not play without a full walkthrough, please be patient while those who'd rather puzzle their way out and talk about the game spend their time on that rather than on writing step-by-step instructions on how to do it. It means waiting a bit longer before playing, but it also means everyone here gets to enjoy the experience in their own way. ;)

CptnSuz June 10, 2014 11:58 PM replied to Paul

@Paul I also found the picross puzzle a bit tricky at first because of the colors. I'll assume that you've looked up instructions somewhere on how to do a black & white type picross. Here are some hints for dealing with the colors.

*The color of the number corresponds to the color of the consecutive squares the number indicates.
*The exception to the above is 0, which means there are no squares of either color in that row or column.
*If there's an empty space between numbers there's one or more colorless tiles in between the those consecutive colored tiles.
*If there's not an empty space and the numbers are right next to each other there's no space between those colored sequences either.

Hope this helps!

Reply

Paul, it's a picross puzzle. The whole point is that there isn't a reference image: you have to produce an image based on the numbers.

To start, find the two columns that are empty (they have 0's above them) and blank them out. Then there are two columns that are completely blue (they have blue 10's above them).

Next, look at the horizontals. There's one that just has a blue 2 next to it, which means it's done, so blank out the other cells in that row.

There are three rows that have 3Y-2B-3Y. Since each row already has four spaces filled (blank-blue-blue-blank in the middle), that means you can fill in the remaining spaces in those rows with yellow. (3+3+4=10) By the same logic, you can also fill in the two rows that are 3B-2B-3B.

Now look at the verticals again. There are two columns that need 3B-5Y-1B, and with the blank that's already marked, there's only one way to fill them in, so go ahead and do that.

That means that the two 1-2-1 rows are now done; mark the blanks in them.

There are two 3-2-1-1 columns which now just need the 3's filled in.

And that leaves the 1-2-2-1-1 and 2-1-2-1-1 columns, which should be easy by this point.

Don't forget to click the gold button down at the bottom when you're done.
