Aries Escape: Episode No.14

elleIt's sort of pointless to go through the efforts of getting your clothes spiffy and fresh-smelling if you don't have anywhere to go once you've cleaned up. Why not treat yourself to a day of sophistication and refinement, enriching your senses as well as your cultural aptitude? Spend an afternoon browsing an art museum. This is exactly the plan for the day in Aries Escape: Episode No.14—except as this is an escape game, the day takes a turn when you're trapped inside a strange exhibit. Here, a new type of medium is on display: the puzzle as art. It's all quite interesting but...where is the door? If you're ever going to leave these two rooms, rather than turning into a new mummified display, Pas de Fuite, you need to look beyond the surface and hone your art interpretation skills. Following the arrows to navigate, and pointing-and-clicking on active zones, explore everything around you, keeping eyes peeled for hints and items to guide your way. Both the clean, clear design and changing cursor aid your progress, while a "save" button will let you discover both endings without having to play through twice.

Aries Escape: Episode No.14Libertechno's design matches the setting perfectly, upping the quality of the graphics to be much more crisp and precise than some earlier installments of her escape game series. Employing the fine art of subterfuge, embedding clues into the pictures and decor, results in quite a few red herrings to distract the player from otherwise very straight-forward puzzles. There are no pixel hunts but you do need to know that certain areas do not become interactive until you've seen a needed clue or, in the case of the "perfect" ending, completed requisite actions. It's also possible to overlook important information or active areas if you forget to use the side arrows when zoomed in on fixed objects. Otherwise, there's little to complain about in this episode; all flows together seamlessly and the puzzles make sense. Clues are well-implemented into the theme and the elegance of the setting fits the mood perfectly. Maybe because it's so relaxing to browse art in a museum, you can't help but stroll casually through the museum, noting clues and amusing at the details as a cool observer rather than confounded captive. Escape comes naturally by course, the inevitable denouement of a creatively interactive art show.

Walkthrough? Walkthrough. I’ll assume you can navigate on your own – there aren’t really any hidden areas or pixel-hunts. The first five puzzles are self-contained, so you can do them in any order you like. For the others, solving one puzzle results in the clue for the next, so it’s hard to give hints without leading you by the nose. Shoutout to tullia for finding the last part of the Happy End.

Books

The Books picture looks like a bunch of stripes. But did you see that you can interact with it?

While looking at the Books picture, click to the left to see a switch. Flip the switch to activate the picture.

You need a set of numbers to complete the puzzle. It should be pretty obvious that the clue for this is…

The pile of books next door, clearly.

Just count the number of books of each colour, and enter the numbers into the picture.

627959. Take the note.

Leaf

Look closely at the picture. It has four leaf-shaped hollows in it. Where might we find something to fit those?

There are four plants in the room. Examine each one and you’ll see a leaf that doesn’t belong. Take them all!

Once you have all four, insert them into the Leaf picture. Take the R key.

Pipes

Clearly we have to get the water from the tap (top left) to the exit (bottom right). But it’s impossible to use every tile (just look at the tiles in the left-hand column and you’ll see that there’s no way they can all fit together).

However, the pipe does have to be watertight.

Numbering the columns 1-5, and the rows A-C, the tiles you don’t use are A2, A5 and C1. Once you know this, the solution pretty much forces itself on you. Take the stick.

Pink banners

No offence, but if you can’t solve this one then you may be on the wrong website. Each banner has a symbol, and behind each one is a number. Behind the middle banner is a box which invites you to match the symbols to the numbers.

So, um, match the symbols to the numbers. This may be the first puzzle I’ve ever done where the question is literally the solution!

Anubis statue

Examine the statue. You can interact with the grey areas, of which there are four. Again, it’s pretty clear that the clue for this is…

...the portrait of Anubis next door. You need to make the colours of the statue match those on the painting.

Ears dark blue, headdress yellow, medallion green, eyes red. Take the second note.

Brick

Slide the pieces of the Bricks picture to the left. You need a 5-digit code to solve it.

You have two notes, both of which have bricks on them. Looks like this is the clue for the Bricks picture.

Combine the two notes to generate a vertical list of five numbers. (You can’t combine the two notes in-game, but you can rapidly double-click from one to the other.)

Wait, “XIS” isn’t a number. Why would SIX be spelled backwards?

Is it backwards though?

Nope, it’s upside down! Flip the digit 6 upside down to match.

Final code: 29591 (top to bottom). Take the L key.

Fountain

There are four buttons. Each one diverts water away from the five spouts in the centre to the big spouts at the side. I guess we have to divert them all, seeing as that’s the only thing you can do.

There isn’t really a way to give hints for this. There are only 16 possible combinations in any case, so it’s actually quicker to do this by brute force than by cunning!

Green – Red – Green – Green. Note the hint: 68 ↔ 34

Clock

Again, four buttons. Click each one in turn and note down which numbers appear. (I’m guessing you did that already.)

Well then, your work here is done! Note the numbers you saw:

Gears

Examine the picture. You can click to budge the picture in each of the four cardinal directions. We need some sort of up-down-left-right type of clue…

… or perhaps two?

Combine the left-right hint from the fountain with the up-down hint from the clock. The numbers give you the order in which to click each direction.

Up Down Right Right Up Left Down Left Up. Take the knob. Note its pentagonal shaft.

Robot

This sculpture doesn’t seem to do anything. It has a small pentagonal hole, which we can only assume is what we’re supposed to interact with.

Use the knob in the hole. (Stop sniggering at the back.) Take the yellow thing that appears.

Click to turn the knob. Note the sequence of coloured lights.

Yellow Red Red Blue Yellow Red Yellow Blue

Stool

Examine the stool. Click to the right to see the 3-colour code. The clue for this is from the robot.

Yellow Red Red Blue Yellow Red Yellow Blue. You should hear a click. Step back, re-examine the stool and open the top to get the black light.

Star

There are two locked cabinets, and you have two keys, labelled L and R. use the L key to open the left cabinet. Take the binoculars and the yellow thing. Open the right cabinet with the R key. Take another yellow thing and the prong. (Note the contents of the book while you’re here.)

The Star picture has slots in it. Use the yellow shapes on the picture to slot them into place…

… except that one of them doesn’t fit. Examine it. See that seam?

Use the boxcutter to cut along the seam. Click once more to separate the pieces. Insert them into the Star picture. Go to the other room to see that a door has now appeared.

The exit

Another 3-colour combination lock, this time with stars. You will have noticed by now that there are coloured stars dotted about the room. Note them all down, including the colour and number of stars. You may see a pattern emerging.

Let’s take an inventory of the coloured stars we’ve seen so far. Starting from the door and working clockwise:
5 red stars (Brick picture)
6 blue stars (R cabinet)
2 red stars (Night picture)
1 blue star (Carp picture)
4 green stars (Robot)
Note that there’s a different number of stars each time…

… and if they all have different numbers, then you can put them into a sequence. Now we just have to find the rest. Make a list of the things in the room we haven’t found a use for so far:
The Venus statue
The Buildings picture
The Light picture
The camera angle you get when you face the Clock and look up

For the Buildings picture:

Clearly we need those 3D glasses Venus is wearing. But we can’t reach. Anything you could use?

Did you try the stick? Close!

Combine the stick with the prong. I guess this is one of those thingers for opening high windows? Use it to get the glasses. Use the glasses on the Buildings picture to reveal 3 red stars.

For the Light picture:

We’re running out of inventory items, and there’s a clue in the name.

Use the black light to reveal 7 green stars.

Above the Clock:

There’s something up there, but it’s too far away to see.

Use the binoculars to see 8 blue stars. You’ve now seen clusters of coloured stars numbered 1-8. Time to escape!

Blue Red Red Green Red Blue Green Blue. And the door clicks open. You can walk out and escape if you like.

But wait!

This game has two endings. You may want to sweep the room again and see if anything has changed.

Click those buttons on the Clock again. These aren’t the same numbers as before!

I wouldn’t call this a pixel hunt exactly, but you have to click somewhere you couldn’t click before.

Click the base of the Venus statue (gah! Thanks to tullia for finding this.) Enter the numbers, take the bookmark(?), and walk out the door like a champion.

Okay, so here's what I'm stuck on:

I need two more pieces for the star.
No idea what the clock is for (though I'm guessing it's connected to the fountain based on the buttons.)
No idea how to move the gear picture
Not sure what to do with all these red and blue stars, I think it's related to the buttons on the side of the chair but I haven't seen any yellow stars yet.
Not sure what either of the book installations are about.
And that robot is just sitting there doing nothing.

Suggestions for what I should be solving first?

I'm just a little bit farther along than you.
The fountain

can be solved on it's own, I don't think it's related to the clock.

Try to turn off all of the center spouts.

Unfortunately I don't know what to do with that new clue.

For the books,

one of them is a clue for the other. It's a little bit tricky to find the input. Finding it is similar to

finding the buttons on the chair.

Did you already solve the brick puzzle?

it requires 2 clues, but I happened to solve it using only the first clue, so finding the second clue was a let down.

Oh yeah, also I have

a forked piece that I am assuming will be used

to make a slingshot and get those 3D glasses. But I need a rubber band or something.

Also i have a stick that I don't know what to do with.

As for your issue with some of your inventory items:

You're overthinking it. You already have the items you need to get the glasses.

If you're near the end (I hope this is near the end!), how many stars have you found? I've got:

10 red, 11 green, and 15 blue. Possibly 11 red if you count the red star that is formed on one of the hanging drapes.

I've just tried clicking each star on the door the corresponding number of times, but no joy so far.

It's not the total of the stars you're interested in.

Each set of stars you find contains a different number of stars.

1 blue, 2 red, 3 red, 4 green, 5 red, 6 blue, 7 green, 8 blue. Make sure to hit the "reset" button if you've been fiddling with it, since it seems to remember your past attempts and only take the exact sequence from the beginning.

The answer to the star puzzle...

It is not the quantity of the blue, red, and green stars...

There are blue, red, green stars in different locations - each location has a different quantity

Keep a note of the quantity of each star color in each location (ignore the white stars).

You will notice that then form a sequence 1-8 (e.g., there is 1 blue star in one location, 2 red stars in another location, 3 red stars in another location, etc

The number of stars in each location is the order you click the star buttons

Solve the gear-picture puzzle and you'll get a little blue knob.

That makes the robot give you a star piece, but if you turn the knob again, the grey spots light up in colours.

The robot is eventually going to be tied to the star puzzle which won't come into play until you've found all the star pieces. The clock and the fountain are related. Notice how the fountain numbers point left and right while the clock numbers are up and down?

Got that. What I think I'm stuck on is the stool. And have never done anything yet with the "light" picture.

Hit the reset button on the stool if your sequence isn't working. Then input the sequence of lights from the robot. When you solve the stool, you can remove the seat from the stool.

Anyone get a non-normal end, yet? I've only noticed one change after completing the final puzzle:

There's one other thing that's different, one of the pieces of artwork.

It's one you didn't do much with before. Previously, only a small part of it was interesting.

To be more specific: the top half was what you looked at before.

It's the armless statue. Look at the base, which you can click on now.

I was suddenly struck by the urge to translate the story text, if anyone's interested. It's nothing that you probably couldn't guess from context.

Introduction:
Today, on a date, we came to visit a new gallery on the outskirts of town.
The advance reviews said that it's full of slightly odd exhibits. Very fun!
As I admired them, I seem to have become separated from him.
But that's strange... There's no door to be found this exhibition room.
Huh!? Get out of here quick; I must get back to him!

Normal End:

It was already almost closing time when I got out of the room, and he was waiting for me near the exit.
On hearing, "Where have you been?", I told the story of the puzzling exhibition room, but he just said, "I wonder if there was such a room..."
Was it all just a dream???

Happy End:

I came out of the room directly behind him.
"Where have you been? I was worried!"
"I was looking around. Shall we go get some afternoon tea?"
From there we went to our usual coffee shop, and as I told him the story of the puzzling exhibition room over café au lait and chocolate gateau, it became a wonderful date.
The beautiful bookmark proves that it wasn't a dream, and will always be an important reminder of this day.
It definitely seems like something good, right?

I can leave, but there are a couple puzzles still to do, and some itemss not yet used (and I haven't found one item):

Puzzles:

Plumbing puzzle, there seems to be no way to make a seamless pipe, is this a red herring?

and

I can't get the 3-D spectacles off the Venus statue to view the buildings picture,

and I appear to be missing a

stick

if @Jamilworm's hint is correct.

My unused pieces are

a bookmark and a forked thing, which I thought was part of a slingshot, but I'm pretty much clicked out and can't find anything additional to use or what to use it on. Also, what about that theoretical stick?

I did solve 1 puzzle by accident and brute-forced two others, using only half a clue.

For the pipe puzzle:

It is possible to solve, but you do not need to use all of the tiles, and the correct solution splits into two pipes which merge back together just before the end. As long as there is a watertight connection between the starting spigot and the ending arrow, it'll be OK.

Once you've solved the pipe puzzle, I think most of your other questions will be cleared up.

With regards to the "bookmark":

If it's green and in the top row of your inventory, it's a leaf shape, and if it's yellow and in the bottom row, it's part of a star shape.

About the forked thing/slingshot:

It's not a slingshot. That was my first thought, too, but it actually combines with something else you can pick up, to make a useful tool.

but I never was able to solve the

It's a stool, or possibly an ottoman. It is not, in any way, shape, or form, a chair.

I'm having real trouble with the brick puzzle. I thought I could solve it with one hint but no, so I guessed it wouldn't let me enter the code until I had the rest of it,but no.Then I read that other people had brute forced it with only one clue.

The clock isn't a puzzle, it's a clue. One of two clues, in fact, to a puzzle involving something that's found in old-fashioned clocks.

The clock is the up-down clue to the Gear picture. The left-right clue involves water.

I got as fgar as putting the 3 yellow pieces into the star but there are 2 that are not there. regardless it says when I go in the next room a door appears but I see no door. Please help.

Did you do the highlighted step? Check the robot's "mouth": is there something yellow in it?

The other three star pieces are in the display cabinets (the ones you open using the R and L keys). You have to cut one of them apart using the box cutter.

Seems I'm late to the party. Paul - I hope Reka clarified it, but post again if not. It's hard when writing walkthroughs to know the best order for all the clues, and some can be difficult to explain!

Incidentally, I'm kinda new to writing walkthroughs (this is the third one I've done), so feedback, suggestions and nitpicks are always appreciated. (I now know that I should have collapsed the whole WT into one spoiler, so I'll do that in future).

This one was a pain to write, because puzzles that require you to combine lots of scattered clues are a problem: do you drop the clues throughout the WT (requiring players to read the whole thing when they only wanted one solution), or do you bunch all the clues up at the end (which pretty much force-feeds the answer)? Let me know what you think!

Pheeze...great walkthrough.
This is not a criticsm...it's likely my own thick skull that can't process the star puzzle. Haaalp ! =)

Pheeze, sometimes my answer is "yes". :) As in, I'll write a handholding-type walkthrough, where I tell people to pick up items/note clues as they encounter them, and then I'll also write a puzzle solutions guide, where I basically just list where the items/clues are found. As a player, I much prefer the latter type - I don't want to have to read through a whole walkthrough, getting spoiled for things that I didn't want help with, just to find that elusive piece to the puzzle I'm stuck with. But Paul[ahem, sorry]others prefer the handholding type.

lilymay, can you detail what you're stuck with?

The star is just a matter of collecting pieces and putting them in place - there are no real puzzles involved.

The pieces are in the two display cabinets and in the robot's mouth once you put the knob in. One of the pieces you get from a display cabinet is actually two pieces that need to be cut apart, using the box cutter that you get from the banners. The knob is the one you get from solving the Gear puzzle.

One aspect that might be confusing is that although it's a five-pointed star, there are only four pieces you need to put in -- the one from the robot has two points.

For the exit door, you need a sequence of colors. The clues are the groups of stars in various locations in the room. One of the first groups you encounter is the 5 red stars behind the bricks. Each group has a different number of stars in it.

1 blue star in the Carp picture
2 red stars in the Night picture (also some white ones, but there isn't a white button, so ignore those)
3 red stars in the Buildings picture (use 3D glasses)
4 green stars on the Robot
5 red stars in the Brick picture (slide the bricks to the right)
6 blue stars in the book in the right-hand display cabinet
7 green stars in the Light picture (use blacklight)
8 blue stars near the ceiling above the Clock (use binoculars)

So this gives you the sequence B, R, R, G, R, B, G, B.

Thank you Reka. Yes...it was the second star puzzle I was stuck with. I had the amounts of each color, but couldn't figure out how to establish the order...most likely because I counted one group incorrectly. Yikes...my face is red. =))
