Weekday Escape

JessIt's no secret that I derive profound enjoyment from room escape games. Plop me down in a locked chamber, toss in a generous handful of puzzles, perhaps a dash of intrigue or humor—mmm, I'm already getting the warm fuzzies. I have great love for the genre, even when it is stripped down to those most basic elements. Another SideA handful of designers, however, have reached beyond and above this set formula; in addition to displaying proficiency with the genre's core mechanics, they in some way imbue their creations with originality and ingenuity. Another Side, a wonderful new escape game from Aqua Flash, is one such example of inventiveness.

In Another Side, you inexplicably find yourself confined within a dollhouse-like room, a pretty little place marred by the giant wall of rock that exists in place of a door. That's right, there's not even a door to unlock! There's plenty to explore and examine, however: the bookshelves covered in strange symbols, the many cabinets and drawers, the odd picture of flowers and butterflies. And, interestingly, there's that mirror. It doesn't seem to do anything special, though. Guess you'll just need to keep an eye on it...

Another Side has a dreamlike, slightly unsettling feel to it that I really liked; I was very much reminded of Alice in Wonderland (though that might have something to do with the little blue dress worn by the protagonist). Although there was nothing to suggest it was "that kind of game," I kept expecting something to jump out at me—it was just a little too quiet and still, y'know? Slightly ominous, almost. And indeed it is possible to come to an untimely end, though if so it will be from your own careless actions, not as a result of foul play.

As interesting as a game's ambience might be, however, mood is nothing without a solid base of quality puzzling to sustain it. Happily, Another Side provides a number of interesting, creative challenges; most seem straightforward at first glance, but then there's a little hitch or quirk that may leave you, well, puzzled (ha! ha!). I like this aspect of the game; nothing is so obscure or confusing that the player will be completely at a loss, yet solutions tend to be multi-layered, created with a thoughtfulness that may not be apparent at first glance. A piece of advice: if something seems a bit too simple, it probably is. Pay strict attention to detail.

I could go on, but a lot of the fun with this game is discovering the designers' aforementioned creativity. In summation, Another Side is a well-executed, good-looking escape game with a very fun "plot device," so to speak; I think you'll have a good time with this one.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

COMPLETE WALKTHROUGH

  1. Click on the wooden table in front of you

open the drawer and take the card with CBF on it. Examine the card. You should find some dots on the back

  2. Back away from the table and turn to your right. That's you in the mirror! Click on the left drawer to zoom in on it. Click it again to open it and take the screwdriver

  3. Back away from the left drawer. Now click on the right drawer. Open it and notice the book. Make note of the symbol on the cover. Open the book and look at the four symbols. Note their order.

  4. Click to your right twice. Click on the champagne glasses. Notice something?

Take the coin from the 2nd one.

  5. Zoom out to a view of the bookcase. Click on the trophy on the left. Click it again to move the cup off the base. Click the bottom of the base to invert it. How could we get these large screws off?

Use the coin you just got to remove the large screws.

Click the bottom to remove the base and then use the screwdriver to remove the small screws from the metal plate. Remove the metal plate and take the yellow box. Also take the small screws that you just removed.

  6. Back up and click to your right, so that you are facing the chairs. Click to the left of the left chair and pick up the handle.

  7. Back up and click to your right. Click on the empty bottom shelf on the right. Place the handle on the lid. Place the screws on the handle and click again to lift. Take the wrench.

  8. Examine the yellow box. Use the wrench to open it and take the "L" key.

  9. Back up so that you can see yourself in the mirror. Use the "L" key to open the left cabinet. Turn on the power.

  10. Back up and turn twice so that you are facing the bookcase. Remember the symbol from the cover of the red book in the drawer? If not, check it and come back. Click on the left bookcase. Now click on the books that show the same symbol as the one in the drawer. In each of these books is a symbol on the left and two flowers on the right. Write down which of the petals are red for each of the four symbols, because these change from game to game. There are two books in the left bookcase and two books in the right bookcase that you need to look at. You should have the information you need for eye, the man, the bull, and the owl.

  11. If you haven't already examined the keypad on the desk, do so. It reveals that we are after a four digit numeric code.

  12. Now turn right and click the picture on the wall to look at it more closely. We need to use the information from the books to decipher this code. The number of butterflies surrounding the flowers is an indication as to the number that results from the given combination of red petals. For instance, on the top left one we see that no red petals means no butterflies. However, for the top right picture we see that one red petal on the left equals four butterflies. Below this picture we see that two red petals on the right is equal to two butterflies. So left petals are worth 4 and right petals are worth 1. Got it? This is proven by the bottom left picture. Two left petals plus one right petal equals nine butterflies ((2x4)+1)=9) . Use this idea to figure out the value of the four symbols from the bookcase. Like I said, these differ from game to game, so I can't tell you exactly what they are. Now, how do we apply this to our code?

  13. Turn and face the desk and click on the keypad to bring it up. In the red book from the drawer we saw the four symbols in a specific order...

    eye, man, bull, owl

Now use this order as the code to the desk. You should be greeted by a small keyboard.

  14. What should you play?

Remember the small card that we picked up at the very beginning?

It said CBF. Nifty that these are all notes on a piano...

If you don't know anything about a piano, then just click on the far left key, then the far right key, and then the middle white key.

  15. This should have opened a card slot on the top of the desk. Click on it. What would go there?

Our card! ... But it doesn't fit!

Flip it around by examining it and clicking on the edge

Put the card in the slot and notice that the random dots on the back now become music notes on a staff.

  16. If you know how to read music then you're golden. Just play the notes on the keyboard. If not, well then this is going to be more difficult for you. Just follow along...

5th white key from left, 3rd black key from left, 3rd white key from left, 2nd white key from left, 1st black key from left, 3rd white key from left

This should have opened a flap on the table that revealed a key.

  17. Take the "R" key from the table and go to the right cabinet. Open it and turn on the second power supply.

  18. Back up and look at the mirror. The blue, green, and yellow lights around it should be lit up now. Notice that you are no longer in color... What happened?

  19. Click your reflection. You have now entered into a black/white mirrored reality.

  20. Click to your right two times to look at the bookcase. Look at the middle symbol of the left bookcase. It looks like an upside down and mirrored version of the one from the book cover. Now zoom in on the left bookcase. Find the three books that bear this symbol. Quickly click on all three books, so that they are all pulled out at the same time. If you do it correctly you should hear a knock. Back away from the bookcase and examine the opened compartment. Take the yin piece.

  21. Click on the right bookcase and find the three books that pull out in a similar way as the ones from the right. There should be one on each row. Click these books quickly so that they open the other compartment. Now back up and take the yang piece.

  22. Turn to your left and examine the board. Write down (or remember) the symbols for the eight planets. (that's right, eight. Remember... Pluto isn't a planet anymore)

  23. Turn to your left again and look in the left drawer. It is a friendly notice that turning off both power switches while in the mirror world will kill you. You don't want to start over, do you?

  24. Look in the cabinet above that drawer and not the arrow. If you try to click above that arrow nothing happens. So, why don't we

go back through the mirror and click where that arrow would have been if it were not in the mirror world

  25. Click above and to the left of the power supply in the right cabinet should yield a small key. What could this go to?

  26. Go to the view of the chairs and picture and click under the little brown table. It should bring up a small key slot. Insert the key. Now how many times should we click it?

It has to do with the clock.

click twice on the left and three times on the right. You should hear a noise.

  27. Back up and look where the picture was. Click on the circle to view it more closely. These are the same symbols from the planets. What could be the correct order?

    Think back to 4th grade

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

  28. Once you've entered the planets correctly, back out, turn right, and go through the mirror. Once through the mirror, turn right and examine where the planet board used to be.

  29. Place the yin and yang accordingly and they will rotate.

  30. Back up, go through the mirror and turn off the power supplies, otherwise the door will remain locked.

  31. Now just turn to the right and open the door. You're out! Boy that sure is going to be a long walk down that dirt road...

  32. WHAT'S THAT? An alternate ending you say?

ALTERNATE ENDING WALKTHROUGH

  1. Complete the game through every step except actually opening the door.

  2. Notice the wall lighting on either side of the door? Click on the left side of the left one. Use your wrench to unscrew that bolt

  3. Do the same to the other side of the same lighting unit

  4. Now back up and click the left lighting to remove the cover

  5. Click on the panel to zoom in. Insert the coin. The lights will start blinking. Click the button that says "PUSH" Voila! A key!

  6. Take the key and go outside. There should be a car waiting for you.

  7. From what I can understand whichever color you landed on when you clicked PUSH determined what car you got. I landed on blue and got an SUV, pink yielded a sedan. I haven't landed on yellow yet.

  8. Use the key to get in the car and drive away with your teddy!

OK, so I've got a screwdriver, a handle with no screws, and a coin.

I've got the keyboard and have put the board with the notes on it in a slot over said keyboard. Now I'm stuck. I'm not a musical person, and I can't figure out what notes to play.

Reply

I've worked out the symbols but what do i do with that info?

I've also

found a key and lit up the lights down the side of the mirror

What next?

Reply

I've not found the keyboard you mention.

For the screwdriver:

Lift up the trophy case to see screws on the bottom. Use the coin on these to reveal another panel. Use the screwdriver on these to get the screws and reveal a box.

Take the box and turn around to the mirror cabinet. Look at the bottom right and use the handle on the panel. Use the screws on it and open to reveal an alan key. Use this on the box to reveal a key to the top left door on the mirror stand. Opening this reveals a switch which I pulled and it turns lights on on the mirror. Thats as far as I got, I'm stuck.

Also all the books marked with a 7 have a code in, but I've yet to work out what it means. I've tried various combos with this code, the painting and the combination lock to no luck.

For the number combination -

Step one:

In the drawer on the right cabinet, there's a book with four symbols. Make a note of them.

Step two:

On the bookshelves on both sides of the desk are books with the same dot pattern as the book in the drawer. Each one has a symbol, and some flowers. Make notes of them.

Step three:

If you haven't figured it out from the painting between the chairs, the petals are simple trinary thing. white white white - white white white is 0, www - red red red is 3, wwr-www is 4, wrr-wwr is 9, that sort of thing. Still got your notes? Figure out what each symbol is!

Step four:

Put the numbers you figured out into the desk in the same order as the symbols in the book. Yay! A keyboard!

Reply

What I've found so far:

One book has four symbols, the books on the shelves have those symbols next to flower pattern
You are given four patterns on the wall
From this you can deduce that the four symbols represent a 4 digit code for the desk

The middle digits are 24, as shown by the number of butterflies

Trial and error give the full code as 7243

The first keys to play on the keyboard are given on a card found in a desk drawer, the rest are given once you plug it in to the slot (google "piano keys"

Flip it over while examining

For the musically uninclined: G, Fsharp, E, D, Csharp, E

A coin is found in a wine glass, a screwdriver in another drawer, and a handle on the floor next to the chair

The trophy case can be flipped up to not only give you a strange object, but also to give you screws

Screw the handle onto the wood under the right locked cabinet

With both keys, you can flip both switches

There's a new little key up to the left of the right switch

Past that I'm stumped

ogremindes..

u just need to play the notes on the card (but if you can't read music then i can see where that would be difficult). its G, F#, E, D, C#, E... or 5th white key from left, 3rd black key from left, 3rd white key from left, 2nd white key from left, first black key from left, 3rd white key from left.

phew, hopefully that wasn't too confusing

I thought the butterflies might have something to do with the code but looks like I was wrong

Stuck. I have

Opened the trophy box, gotten the key inside the inner box. Used the handle to open the drawer. Lit the blue/green on the mirror. Found the coded books.

I can associate the man and the cow/bull with the flower patterns in the painting, but the eye and owl don't match up. I have tried various combinations on the desk based on the number of butterflies. I give; I just don't get it.

I also have a funny piece that reads CBF that I don't know what to do with.

Reply

the code to drawer is

really the hardest part of the game, so in telling you i'm kinda ruining it.. so i'll just tell you HOW to find it...

for now, just look at the picture on the wall. the butterflies tell you what each flower petal is worth. deciphering this code shows us that each red petal on the left is worth 4, and each red petal on the right is worth 1. from here, you should be able to decipher what each of the four symbols is worth, and use that to figure out the code to the desk

Reply

Brute-forced the combo, since I had the center two numbers. Kevin, thanks for the explanation. It would have taken me more examples than given to work that code out; it never occurred to me to

weight petals the same. I was working from a positional theory, similar to binary.

Now, I have

the keyboard, which makes my CBF piece make sense suddenly. I played the notes, and a thing popped up. It looks like something LIKE my piece but shaped different at the bottom fits there. Now what??

hold off on the planets for now... go to the left bookcase. three books should pop out. they all have the same symbol on them (its the middle symbol from the bottom shelf). click on all three real fast and you should hear noise. back out and see what you've gotten. now do something similar to what you just did on the other side of the bookcase

ooooh.
thanks kevin. that worked much better. i'd figured the leftmost key was A. knew i should have invested in piano lessons as a kid...

Is piano playing and/or music reading ability more common in Japan than in America?
Granted, with good ol' google and wikipedia it's easy enough to look up diagrams that explain what notes are where, but still, music puzzles that rely on the players ability to read or replicate heard tones annoy me more than just about anything else in games.

but all in all this game was still pretty fun.

If you've solved the puzzle under the table with the plant on it in the full color room, all you need to do is make note of which symbol corresponds to which planet and press the symbols in the order of the planets, from closest to furthest from the sun.

Reply

Alternate ending:

After you activate the yin/yang thing and turn off the mirror, you gain access to the door. What else do you gain access to?

Planets:

Look for something else with the same symbols. Start closest to the Sun, then go out.

Reply

Keyboard:

look at the key board the very first white key is 'C' (to black keys and hang a left is alwasy 'C')
The following white key is 'D' ect. through 'G' after 'G' white keys start over at 'C'

Looking at the card with the notes: It help draw out the staff lines to label

The first Space (bottom space) note is 'F' then 'A' then 'C' then 'E' the space notes spell 'FACE'

The first line (full bottom line) is 'E' then 'G' than 'B' than 'D' than 'F'
remember "Everyone Good Boy Deserves Fudge"

So knowing that notes range from 'A' to 'G' you can run the whole scale starting with the fist full btoom line 'E-D' including spaces.

To figure out the note below the first line and the note hanging out on it's own line go backwards in the alaphabet. If 'E' is the first full line the note before would be 'D' also known as 'Droopy D' and then 'C' is the note with it's own line also known as 'Middle C'

You are not finished yet:
Notice the little '#' on the staff? These are sharp indicators. Sharp indicators alter the note by one half step up the scale.

If you play a keyboard in order you would include the black keys. A black key to the right of a white key is the sharp of that note. So the '#' on the little diddy in this game are on the 'F' note and 'C' note.

To play 'C# (C sharp)' You would use the black key to the right of the 'C' note which is the first key on the keyboard. The forth key on the keyboard is 'F'. To play 'F#' you would play the black key to the right of the 'F' note.

So for everyone that I'm just confused teh hell out of the notes on the card are as follows"

G, F#, E, D, C#, E

If you skipped down go back and read what I wrote to figure out what the #s mean!

Hopfully someone learns a little somethign from this lesson! I tired to make it as simple as I could aloowing maybe someone to get an extra bit of knowledge.

Good walkthrough, Kevin, but you got the last two planets backwards.

Jess,
sure, it's not hard too google and wiki things up - I just don't seem to fit this idea in a casual point-n-clciker - having to rely on the net for info. A good game, I think, should contain all the info to beat it - save the very basics, of course, like reading or elementary mathemathics :) But, for me at least, the ability to read music is not included...

PS: Nota bene, this one's still much better - or less worse, rather - than the one last year in which you had to reproduce a rather intricate guitar-tune, if anyone remembers... That was about the worst room escape game I can remember... :)

Reply

You mean OUT: File#01? That was the hardest escape I've ever played... But sure not the worst! I mean, the guitar tune was...

all written at the CD's name, and all you had to do was click the strings numbered from 1 to 6.

I highly recommend OUT: File#01 for die-hard escapers =)

Reply

Yeah, I don't even try URL-changers... Interestingly, I honestly think it's a great genre but not my cuppa tea.

Reply

Ok, yes I'm stuck on the flower/butterfly...

I have: Eye top red left, top red
right. Man top red, side red right only. Bull top red left only. Owl top red left red left side only

I have be trying to go by what the walk through or others have mention, but I can't seem to figure it out? Any suggestions?

Reply

And yeah, Out: File#01... And you could even die in that game if i recall it right... Worst nightmare :D

Why don't we have more Covert Front instead? :D

I'm starting to like these "Escape The Room" strategies. I wish I knew programming. Cause I have plenty of ideas for one.:-)

For me, the trouble with the piano was how do you know only 2 specific notes go sharp? A clef...OK, I'll find it. Translated to piano keys...OK. Sharp in front of a note...OK. But like this?

Reply

Ka, next to the treble clef on the left key signature (the two random sharp signs). This tells you what key your song is in. The key tells us that F and C are both sharp, which happens to be the key of D.

Reply

I've just spent 2 minutes clicking on the big arrow on the loading screen before I realised the game is further down lol.

Reply

It's actually a plus in my book if a game leads you to learn something new. There are a lot of cool things in the world, like playing musical instruments, particle theory, and Swahili, among others, and there are a lot of great resources on the Web for learning a little bit about them.

Now who can point me to a room escape game involving Swahili? :-)

Reply

Um, I just died. For the first time ever I died in a room escape game. There was no warning or anything. I flipped a switch and died. I don't think I'll play this game again.

Reply

Yellow on the alternate ending gives you a flatbed delivery truck. lol.

Reply

Papachabre:

Actually, there is a warning. If you look in the left drawer of the mirror world's mirror room, there's a book saying it's a bad idea to flip both switches in the mirror world.

Reply

"Look in the book. It is a friendly notice that turning off both switches while in the mirror will kill you."

Yeah, a friendly notice that's SPELLED BACKWARDS!

Reply

I'm sad that I can't figure out the 'simple' number/petal/red/white/butterfly/symbol/bookcode solution for a blasted 4 digit number, because it's really a good looking game.

I just can't wrap my head around this one, even with the spoilers spelling it out for me.

Rats :(

yellow is a truck

Reply

Uhm, i don't know if this was already mentioned or if this is 100% sure.

This is about the alternate ending..

Clicking the push button when the blue circle lights up can get you the pink circle. Clicking when pink lights up gets you yellow. And yellow gets you blue.

The yellow light drops a key to a mini truck-like car (multicab?) I'm not really knowledgeable on cars.. x__x

this is how you play.

COMPLETE WALKTHROUGH

Click on the wooden table in front of you

open the drawer and take the card with CBF on it. Examine the card. You should find some dots on the back

Back away from the table and turn to your right. That's you in the mirror! Click on the left drawer to zoom in on it. Click it again to open it and take the screwdriver

Back away from the left drawer. Now click on the right drawer. Open it and notice the book. Make note of the symbol on the cover. Open the book and look at the four symbols. Note their order.

Click to your right twice. Click on the champagne glasses. Notice something?

Take the coin from the 2nd one.

Back up and click to your right, so that you are facing the chairs. Click to the left of the left chair and pick up the handle.

Back up and click to your right. Click on the empty bottom shelf on the right. Place the handle on the lid. Place the screws on the handle and click again to lift. Take the wrench.

Examine the yellow box. Use the wrench to open it and take the "L" key.

Back up so that you can see yourself in the mirror. Use the "L" key to open the left cabinet. Turn on the power.

If you haven't already examined the keypad on the desk, do so. It reveals that we are after a four digit numeric code.

Turn and face the desk and click on the keypad to bring it up. In the red book from the drawer we saw the four symbols in a specific order...

eye, man, bull, owl

Now use this order as the code to the desk. You should be greeted by a small keyboard.

What should you play?

Remember the small card that we picked up at the very beginning?

It said CBF. Nifty that these are all notes on a piano...

If you don't know anything about a piano, then just click on the far left key, then the far right key, and then the middle white key.

This should have opened a card slot on the top of the desk. Click on it. What would go there?

Our card! ... But it doesn't fit!

Flip it around by examining it and clicking on the edge

Put the card in the slot and notice that the random dots on the back now become music notes on a staff.

Take the "R" key from the table and go to the right cabinet. Open it and turn on the second power supply.

Back up and look at the mirror. The blue, green, and yellow lights around it should be lit up now. Notice that you are no longer in color... What happened?

Click your reflection. You have now entered into a black/white mirrored reality.

Click on the right bookcase and find the three books that pull out in a similar way as the ones from the right. There should be one on each row. Click these books quickly so that they open the other compartment. Now back up and take the yang piece.

Turn to your left and examine the board. Write down (or remember) the symbols for the eight planets. (that's right, eight. Remember... Pluto isn't a planet anymore)

Turn to your left again and look in the left drawer. It is a friendly notice that turning off both power switches while in the mirror world will kill you. You don't want to start over, do you?

Look in the cabinet above that drawer and not the arrow. If you try to click above that arrow nothing happens. So, why don't we

go back through the mirror and click where that arrow would have been if it were not in the mirror world

Click above and to the left of the power supply in the right cabinet should yield a small key. What could this go to?

Go to the view of the chairs and picture and click under the little brown table. It should bring up a small key slot. Insert the key. Now how many times should we click it?

It has to do with the clock.

click twice on the left and three times on the right. You should hear a noise.

Back up and look where the picture was. Click on the circle to view it more closely. These are the same symbols from the planets. What could be the correct order?

Think back to 4th grade

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

Once you've entered the planets correctly, back out, turn right, and go through the mirror. Once through the mirror, turn right and examine where the planet board used to be.

Place the yin and yang accordingly and they will rotate.

Back up, go through the mirror and turn off the power supplies, otherwise the door will remain locked.

Now just turn to the right and open the door. You're out! Boy that sure is going to be a long walk down that dirt road...

ALTERNATE ENDING WALKTHROUGH

Complete the game through every step except actually opening the door.

Notice the wall lighting on either side of the door? Click on the left side of the left one. Use your wrench to unscrew that bolt

Do the same to the other side of the same lighting unit

Now back up and click the left lighting to remove the cover

Click on the panel to zoom in. Insert the coin. The lights will start blinking. Click the button that says "PUSH" Voila! A key!

Take the key and go outside. There should be a car waiting for you.

From what I can understand whichever color you landed on when you clicked PUSH determined what car you got. I landed on blue and got an SUV, pink yielded a sedan. I haven't landed on yellow yet.

Use the key to get in the car and drive away with your teddy!

the end!

good luck!

I can't even get into the game. I wait for it to load and then it brings up "Start Game (sounds)" and "Load". Load does nothing and Start Game just brings up another page with more games on it. If I click on this game again in that page, it brings me back to the start page.

Yep, I can't play either. Must be something they changed, could be a Flash Player detection script bug, too. Not really sure.

All I can say is I hope they fix it soon. =/

mrsomalian-

The exact same thing happened to me. I was in the black-and-white room and I saw the arrow but nothing was really happening so I tried pulling both switches and died. I'd start over but I think I was fairly far in the game, so that sucks. The moral of the story is DON'T pull both levers/switches in the black-and-white room!
