TrickyAlxemyPlaying God has a bit of a poor reputation: the kind of reputation that leads to torch and pitchfork wielding villagers smoking you out of a burning windmill. However, Alxemy, the engaging new puzzler by Hyptod, reminds us that sometimes, creating life can feel more like playing with Lego blocks than a crime against nature.

Alxemy presents you with a barren wasteland, more than ready to be filled with your alxemical creations. Using the mouse, you drag two elements from the right onto the transmutation circle, and with a click, you set off a possible reaction. A successful one will add a new element to your categories and the world at large, while a unsuccessful one will flash red with failure. Off to the left, under the trash warp, is a scroll of elemental possibilities, and below the circle, your assistant offers helpful hints. There are 119 elements to create. (Sadly, you are required to click some of the on-screen links to get all the available elements, though you do not actually have to Facebook post or whatever to finish the game, just click the link itself.) Good luck, and be sure to tell the human not to take advice from the snake...

Alxemy Analysis: It's impossible to discuss Alxemy without comparing it to Doodle God. The two games are so similar in their scope and mechanics that it would be disingenuous not to mention the clear inspiration, or at least influence. However, Alxemy has a charm all its own, and comes off less as leader-following than as a serious attempt to improve on the flaws of its counterpart. I think both will have their fans.

First, the good: Whereas Doodle God sometimes felt like it was reducing creation to smashing blocks together to make new blocks, Alxemy is much better at capturing the feeling of building a world from scratch. The updating view of the earth you are creating is quite a nice touch, and it is a delight to see it slowly filling with the various flora and fauna. What's more, the successful combinations feel logical, while at the same time rewarding lateral thinking... I don't know if I would have expected, for instance, fire + fox = red panda, but I cannot deny the power of the pun. The helpful hints delivered by your meganekko partner serve the dual purpose of offering a justification for the more esoteric equations, while also being quite informative: Alxemy isn't quite an edutainment game, but I certainly felt a little smarter than I did before.

On the downside, the interface has a bit of clunkiness to it, and is more crowded than I would like. There are so many buttons available to click, especially for a game based in such a simple idea. The crowdedness also extends to the mechanics: It's much easier to take elements out than to put them away (I kept trying to place them back from the category I had dragged them from). While this does give a nice "work-bench" feel to the game, it also means I often had more elements out than needed. Considering the aqua tint of both the background, the natural greens were lost against it. Also, I would have appreciated some alternate solutions: In my mind, mammal + bird = bat makes as much sense as shrew + air, so why only recognize the latter?

While the above might limit its crossover casual appeal, make no mistake: Alxemy is a great time and should keep many addicted until the final piece is combined. It's a fine evolutionary branch of the Alchemy concept started in DOS and revitalized by Doodle God. In any case, the fact you'll have fun is elemental-ly, my dear Watson.

Good call, fixing it now. Thanks!

It is definetly better than Doodle God in some ways, and the hint lady pratically gives away the answers with the hints for most of them.

Reply

Also, TBH, the whales really should be in the mammals category.....

Reply

Eh, mammals are in the "sea creatures" category. I'm okay with that.

Good news for the "missions":

Even if you don't have Facebook, clicking the links unlocks the relevant objects.

Reply

Minor gripes about scientific realism aside, they actually had some clever combinations and ways of linking them together. For the most part, the combinations are actually more logical than some of the ones in Doodle God.

it's a nice game, but it does feel like it's ripping off Doodle God... however, the combinations aren't exactly the same, which I like. i.e. fire+water=alcohol in Doodle God, but in Alxemy, fire+water=steam (which makes a bit more sense to me.) it also has more charm, and seems geared for younger kids. I enjoy it, but I think Doodle God is more fun (and it's organized better.)

Alxemy Angst February 7, 2011 4:28 PM

I got down to my last item, the Red Panda, and I can't figure it out. I have no more hints and all the combinations I've tried, mainly with the Weasel, don't work. Please Help!

fuzzyface February 7, 2011 4:32 PM

Did this game just require me to post about it in facebook to advance in the game?

Seriously.... Get a grip dear game designers. Social Media is all cool, but having to do as intergral of a game (that is not 4square or so) ...

Okay I know, you just have to follow the link, as yet they cannot check if you really followed em or posted about em, but I still see it as quite unethical business practice.

Otherwise yes, this game is better than doodle god.

Personally I keep imagening a game called "Open Alchemy" or so, that allows players to add new combos and elements. Too bad I dont find the time/energy to code it. When I'm retired I'll do it =)

Reply

Err, so I got 119 out of 119, and now what? Some little fireworks in the build screen that I almost missed? No animations? No congratulations? What gives?

Duh, I went back up and read all the way through, not skipping anything, and there it was...fire + fox = red panda. Totally not genetically correct, but I guess it works for this game. Thanks Tricky!!!

Reply

Jay and fuzzyface have made the game totally worthwhile now, thanks friends.

Reply

Loved the game. Even if it is largely influenced by Doodle God, and it is a bit better, Alxemy stands out as individual work.

Now, if those two could be... well... combined into something new; if doodle god had simillar quick hint feature (although not so blatantly easy) and great epic scene of all things discovered, there would be truly a fantastic game. Hope there would be more of this kind of games!

Reply

When I saw the words "red panda" I stopped reading and started playing (my favorite animal, borderline obsession.) Glad I did. This is a great game.

Reply

Effectively blackmailing me to advertise the game so I can play it properly... inexcusable.

One reason I avoid Facebook games is the fact they often make drafting additional players mandatory, and it always feels dirty to me, like I am unwillingly participating in a pyramid scheme scam. If I choose to get involved in a social activity with other people, than that choice should be mine, not forced upon me by a game. If the game wants me to get my friends to play it, then it should offer some ways so we can play it together, not bully me just so I can keep playing.

So yes.. 1 mushroom for this game. So, so BM.

Reply

i clicked on link, and shared it on facebook, but the answer is still locked o.O what should i do??

You do not have to play this game on Facebook if you do not want to. I didn't even know it was on Facebook until I started reading this blog for help with one item (the red panda).

Heh--the only one I really got stuck on was, amusingly enough, humans...apparently only one kind of art suffices for the clue, which is a little annoying.

Reply

You don't need to go on facebook to play the game, but as far as I can tell you DO need to go on facebook--and even make a post about the game--in order to COMPLETE it by getting

the paint and the pouch, for instance.

I hate it when games do that, and agree with baba44713 and fuzzyface. In order to have the satisfaction of completing the game, you are manipulated into doing viral marketing for them. Naturally companies want to spread the word about their game, but the downside is that many players will be annoyed and alienated. Do they consider that a worthwhile tradeoff? It makes me feel like they care more about getting as many hits as possible than they do about making an enjoyable game. (What, the icons and links for facebook, digg, etc. both in and outside of the game aren't enough?)

Once I realized I could not go further in the game, I quit, as I do when other games prompt me to make inane posts on my personal facebook page in order to continue.

The red panda makes sense when,

You think of alternate names for that specific animal.

The fire fox.

If you look at where it sits in the mammal list (which is otherwise alphabetically sorted), you'll see that the name was changed after much of the game had already been implemented.

We're sorry for forcing you to click links and do stuff. Our next games will not use such aggressive promotion that affects gameplay.

JiGuest/Jay Indeed, clicking the link sufficides. But the ingame text is still trickery into making the player believe that s/he must do that.

@hytpod good to hear, I've nothing against a not too obstructing "had fun? tell your friends about it" suggestion somewhere.

I wish there was a button that would make the girl say the next hint, I probably wouldn't have needed the walkthrough if I didn't get tired of waiting for her to finish congratulating me. That, and I never got virus because it never occurred to me that I could combine two of the same thing, as I don't think I ever had to do that for the rest of the game.

I agree that alternate solutions would be delightful, and that it was somewhat of an inconvenience scrolling up and down the lists when they became lengthy. However, I didn't have any problem putting away elements. This was a nice little game, though I found the world's contrasting art styles (vectors vs paintings) slightly off-putting.

I just wanted to say that if you use Abc3 Games to do it you don't have to post on Facebook because the actual site isn't allowed to do that because of the age of most of the kids that use Abc3.
