Alice House: No 5. House of the Duchess

Funkyland's cute and mildly fantastical Alice House escape games have quickly become something many of us look forward to when you want something fast and fun, and Alice House: No 5. House of the Duchess might be one of the fastest yet. This time, you're trying to find six cat-related objects in this curiously understated little kitchen, so click around to search and interact. Clues to solve the few puzzles you're encountered are scattered around amidst the baguettes and the silverware, and items in your inventory can be used once you've clicked them. But whatever you do, don't blink... not because of any demonic statuary, but because if you do, you might just miss this one completely!

Walkthrough

Click on the table in front of you. On the left is a sealed envelope we can't open. On the right, there is something poking out from under the mat. Click on it, it's the first cat! Zoom out from the table.

Click on the cabinet to your left. The top set of cupboards seem to be missing handles to open them. The drawer in the middle of the cabinet needs some kind of code. The bottom set of cupboards is locked. Let's zoom out and move on!

Click on the fireplace at the back of the room. Zoom in on the saucepan sitting on the left of the stove. That fork is our second cat! Zoom out and click on the small cabinet to the right of the fireplace. There are a bunch of pots behind a locked door, with a clue on the bottom. Zoom out, and click on the lower right corner, and grab the chair. Zoom out back to the starting view.

Click on the cabinet on the right of the room. Zoom in on the cupboards, there's a panel with some solid green and gingham squares on it. Remember that pattern. If you click that panel, it moves and reveals a set of 4 keys. If you remember the clue from the fireplace cabinet, grab the right key (it's the one with the T in it, third from left). Zoom out and use the chair to click on the cat at the top of screen. That's our 3rd kitty! Now just put the right pattern into the box, and grab the letter opener. Zoom out back to the starting screen.

Click on the table and zoom in on the letter. Use your letter opener to rip the envelope and get our "invitation". The colours are the same as the ones on the drawer, so just put the pieces together to make the numbers.

It's 2834

Go back to the cabinet on the left side of the room and open up the drawer using your number code. Grab the screwdriver on the left and zoom out. Use the screwdriver on the bottom set of cupboards and you'll get the door handles. You can put them back on this set of cupboards, but there isn't anything inside them. What you want to do is put them on the set of cupboards on the top of the cabinet. Open them up (make sure you click on the windows instead of the handles, or you'll just remove the handles again) and get that kitty plate.

Finally, go back to the fireplace and click on the cabinet to the right. Use the key (the one with the T in the circle) to open it up and click on the pepper pot with the cat on it.

Now you have the door key! It's on the left of the room. Use it to escape. Hurray!

Hmmm, so I've escaped, but...

the cupboard handles were still usable. Did I miss something?

This can't be the Duchess' house...there's nowhere enough pepper in the place.

Rob...I don't think so.

Even after getting the escape key, I could take the handles off the top cupboard doors and put them back on the lower doors and open that cabinet to look inside. There wasn't anything usable in there, though.

I hope a walkthrough is in the works. no hurry of course :)

The amount of things in these rooms that my character simply ignores really frustrates me. Somehow I am fine getting behind the idea of room escapes where someone, for some or other reason, placed you in a room with some very specific puzzle that you need to solve in order to escape. However I get very annoyed by all the extra things in these rooms (from this developer) that I can clearly use to easily escape from the room but instead I pretend they don't exist. I know it's silly to complain about how 'you can clearly escape from this room by simply using some brute force' but somehow with this series of games it really bothers me.

thanks for the walkthrough Squiddly. very nice walkthough at that. :)

This Alice House is much closer to the Fruit Kitchens; the earlier Alice House games were quirkier (and more interesting.)I still love the music, but there aren't so many, "ah HA!" moments.

No problem, Paul, glad it helped! And I totally agree with you JCS. Not that the previous games in this series were overly complex, but they definitely felt like a step up from the Fruit Kitchens.

I'm a fan of the Alice escapes, but that first one really sent Funkyland in a new direction. They need more of that.

the keys

take on the assigned pattern of the place they're in.

which means the one you're holding is assigned the pattern of the missing key in the cupboard

Took me a while to realize. :3

I have a problem but it will be a spoiler to explain it.

When I solved the cupboard and got the handles for some reason I put them back on and now I can't use them to open the top cupboard which is obviously where my plate is. Does anybody have an idea how I can get solve this issue?
