Bloons Tower Defense 4
NinjaKiwi's Bloons Tower Defense 4 is here at last, stepping over Bloons Tower Defense 3 and adding much more of everything we love! New units, new maps, better upgrades, and more evil bloons to pop! While some may complain about the addition of mochi coins, BTD4 can generate hours of fun without ever having to go near the purchasable content. So kick back, peel a banana, and begin the balloon popping fun!

Hi there, thanks JIG for the comprehensive review :). I thought I'd leap in and comment about the Fast Forward, which we thought would be handy for those slower periods in the earlier levels. Unfortunately this is only really available on faster computers, we're trying to think of a clever solution though!
Aw man. I really wish you hadn't posted this tonight. There went the past 3 hours.
I don't understand the second (loopy) intermediate level--it is too hard to follow the path they are taking.
Anyhow, props to you NinjaKiwi-this game is a blast (though maybe it is because I never played the other BTD games).
One tip for the first intermediate level:
Use two spike ball monkeys at the base of the straight area, with their aiming set on "first"
Their spike balls will travel down the line and decrease each of the balloons by one level... this helps a lot!
Great fun, as expected! I was a bit concerned that the extra towers might be a bit too much, but in fact they complement the existing ones quite well.
The easy track on intermediate difficulty was possibly a little too easy - I didn't lose any lives and only had to resort to road spikes on a couple of occasions. But I guess it's a good introduction if you're not familiar with the game.
I generally like the BTD games, but all the 'mochi' stuff is a real letdown. It seems like at every point they're trying to upsell me. Not only that, but the little indicator in the upper-lefthand corner of the screen telling me how many mochi-points I have (0) gets in the way of the gameplay -- can't seem to place a tower there unless I'm in the middle of a round.
Excellent, of course, but the improvement over BTD3 is minimal. A few new balloon types and a few new tower types. Meh. And they removed the branching upgrades, which is lame - now if you want to add blades to the tack shooter but don't need the range upgrade, too bad; you have to buy the range upgrade no matter what.
This seems to mostly just add a little superficial complexity and eye candy but not many new ideas.
BTD3 is one of the greatest TD games of all time, and this is about as good - so it is very good, indeed. You wish they could have taken it to another level instead of just adding a few marginal upgrades.
And a review note:
NinjaKiwi has changed the dynamics of the game for the fourth installment. Towers and other defenses unlock one at a time rather than all at once.
That's only on the first playthrough; once something is unlocked it is then unlocked from the very beginning of any new games you start. So I wouldn't say they have changed the dynamics, really - it'd be more accurate to say that they added a (forced) tutorial mode.
I dont know whats wrong for me. i run Windows 7 and google chrome.. tried IE to. and same problem.. the game works but the only thing that seems to be wrong is that the speed button doesnt work at all. and its pretty annoying to wait so long when you start a new map and run those first waves. anyone has any idea whats wrong?
I'm actually not bothered that much by the Mochicoins stuff... the powerups and rank-skipping are a bit stupid (though I won't complain too much about free frag bombs), but I'm considering buying the levels. Even more so if Mochi cycles their offers frequently enough for me to get the coins without spending money or doing anything worse than trying out a MMO for a couple minutes. (though that's not likely)
I loved BTD 1-3, and 4 definitely fits well as the next step in this series. Really well done.
Can't say I'm a fan of the fact that "branching" item upgrades were taken out, that was a feature that I really enjoyed.
Other than that, superb installment. It's just a sad statement that in the end... the bloons will always win. :(
OK. I think somethings going wrong
I start the game... it says 'loading' pops up 'choose your type' ok... 'easy'.
"welcome. on Easy, you have 200 lives etc etc etc"
No continue bar, no 'next' can't place any baloons... nothing happens.
just the maze, and that blue box. happens on easy and intermediate... can't do anything past choosing my level of difficulty. Anyone any idea's/suggestions?
Well, after looking around the site, it turns out none of the games that worked previously are working anymore...
I'm using IE and I believe my flash is updated, but I still get a little image on the upper left of every game, the one that shows you theres supposed to be a picture but it wont show up. could it just be that the site can't handle the traffic? If this is the case, is there a mirror available that I could play the game at?
quote :it's broken. Like others I can manage to pick a difficulty setting, etc., but once the level loads, none of the controls except for the mute button do anything, and there are various controls even before that which look like they should do something but don't respond to clicks.
unquote.
wtf is going on?
EDIT: I beat it! I beat it! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I FINALLY BEAT IT!!!!
*Ahem* Sorry about that, I've been trying for days.
If anyone else is having trouble with that level, one thing that really REALLY helped me was:
letting my money accumulate so I could afford the 4th level upgrades, and only adding towers when a lot of bloons were getting past the ones I had. I beat the first 20+ levels with just a 4th upgraded tack shooter, a 3rd upgraded cannon, and a 2nd upgraded banana farm for $$
after finally being able to play the game, I've found only a few things that bother me. the first is that whatever tower you have selected becomes deselected as soon as the level ends. not a major glitch, but annoying. the other is that the fast forward button practically doesn't work. I would very much appreciate it if these things were fixed, but its not essential to my play. as a last note, while attempting to buy the fraq bombs I could not connect to server so I tried again. the second attempt also failed, but 30 seconds afterward I was given the fraq bomb and for some reason had NaN mochi coins. I want to use this glitch to get some of the upgrades that cost money, but I'm afraid of getting in legal trouble so I can't. Oh well :)
Tonya:
Common road spikes work just fine for early levels. For long groups of camo balloons, area-effect weapons (spike towers, etc.) will pop them despite being unable to "see" them, so you only need a single road spike on the first camo balloon to give the towers a visible target.
Later, upgraded airplanes can allow all towers in the area to "see" them.
To add to OtherBill's comment, @Tonya:
The Monkey Buccaneer also has an upgrade like the Monkey Ace to let towers around it see the camo bloons, or you can set up a mortar tower aimed at the beginning at the level since it explodes without detecting bloons
Personally, I think the camo bloons are an interesting addition to the game, but it's lousy that you only have a few choices to combat them. More towers should've gotten that upgrade.
I was a big fan of TD3, and when TD4's annoying bugs get fixed I'm sure I'll be a fan of it too... but for now the save button tells me I'm not logged in... even when I am... and the fast forward is an epic fail... making the first 10 levels or so almost too painful to put up with.
I also preferred to be able to choose which upgrades to take... so the new upgrade method is just naff.
Having said that, I love the series and I have always been a big Ninja Kiwi fan (Being a Kiwi myself helps :) - and I'm sure these things will be fixed in the fullness of time. until then I have TD3 and I will still play the occasional TD4 for the experience.
Steve
I'm enjoying this one. Can't say I've played the previous ones enough to know if it's better or worse than them, but the final upgrades you can unlock for the monkeys are pretty awesome.
Here's a little of a strategy I've developed for single-entrance levels:
After the first few levels, start placing glue monkeys near the entrance, set to "strong" or "last" targeting. The key is to give them at least the glue soak upgrade so that even if they spawn multiple balloons when popped, those inner balloons will all be glued.
the fast forward button works fine on my 3 year old laptop... But then again my 3 year old laptop has a better vid card than most new computers today. Thats probably whats allowing my Fast Forward to work, either that or the fact that i have a dual core processor that can handle the extra traffic generated by the button. I hope this helps in explaining why it doesnt work for some
Sigh...
Warning, rant ahead:
Note to all game designers out there: If you want to get Mochi Coins out of people, that's fine, put premium content in, I won't hold it against you so long as the game isn't completely impossible without it.
Just one request, though: If you're going to do that, DON'T HAVE A LEADERBOARD! Premium content that makes the game easier should not be made unavailable to some people if you're going to paste a list of the game's top players in front of everyone! You're just allowing people to buy their way into the top page!
This is what kills MMOs, when you make premium content so great that people who have real-world cash to splurge can cheat their way past everyone else! I don't want to play a game where only rich people can be the best, there's enough of that garbage out in the real world!
I agree wholeheartedly with Sylocat. Furthermore it just kills all the fun for me if a game can only be beaten by signing up to some stupid organization I never wanted to sign up to. A game can't be that important. Although it is fun and I've beaten all tracks in easy mode and several in medium mode without any Mochi-crap.
At level 100 i had 11 banana research facilitys(lvl 5), 1 cannon(lvl 3), one mortar(lv 3), three spike-o-pults(lvl 3), one artic wind ice tower(lvl 5), one bucaneer(lvl 5), one stealth plane(lvl 5), one glue gunner(lvl 5), one yedi monkey(lvl 5), one tack shooter(lvl 5), 5 monkey beacons(4 lvl 4 and one lvl 5), 4 mage monkeys(lvl 5) and 31 sun gods(lvl 5). No mochicoins used. And still i allmost failed at level 100! O.o There should be more upgrades, 'cause all that towers made me lag so much so a sun god beam was slower than a red bloon is(if it's no lag).
Some ideas for BTD5(i hope they'll make one):
1. Antimatter beam for super monkeys, before or after sun god, i dunno.
2. Samurai monkey. Hits on a very small area right before it, but is pretty strong.
3.Giant monkey. Shoots mega darts. Pretty small, but it's big, so it leaves less place for other towers and cant be placed in small spaces between two roads.
4:Road spike factory. Makes road spikes cost 15 money and puts roadspikes on the track at random place sometimes(I've only used roadspikes when i tryed out what it was in BTD1, so i wouldn't use it, but maybe good for someone else)
5:Pineapple spewer. shoots pineapples at the enemy, so it only works if there are more behind the targeted bloon.
I've also drawed how I think they should look, but i haven't submitted anywhere yet.
Sorry for the long post and my english if it's bad^^(I'm from sweden)
@ Zendikar: To get on the leaderboards, you purchase 8,000 Mochicoins and buy all the upgrades, so you can compete against the rich people.
*sigh* Sorry, I'll calm down. It is a really good game in most other ways.
However, I don't like how they changed the values of certain bloons, like the Rainbow Bloon (which now contains two zebras instead of two blacks and whites), which means the ceramic bloons and MOABs have different values now, which is a bit of a jar if you've played BTD2 and 3. Also, it would be nice for a bit more indication of how you can get your towers to detect Camo bloons (I figured it out, but it kicked my tail the first time). Also, the branching upgrades should have stayed... if anything, they should have made MORE options.
Other than that, I do like it. The unlockable-by-rank goodies do add some replay value, the Camo and Zebra bloons are pretty interesting ideas, and I love the B.F.B. (if my calculations are correct, the B.F.B. is 773 bloons).

heya, yeah i know its nothing to do with this anything hehe, but on my laptop, the modern warefare 2 trailer is making my game lag, and when i refresh or go on the website later, its the same advert! anything i do is just making it lag, so much lag because of this stupid advert for a game i hate! so is there anything that anyone to say or an advert blocker or something to help me? please help!
does the banana farm do anythin in apopalypse? and also i dont get y u ppl dont like the new upgrades. i love them! its becuase ppl like u whine tht they put it in there. it just makes the game more difficult which i think is good. the only thing i have 2 complain bout is the sun god. i think it should cost less or do more dmg... i bought like 3 of them n they did much less then the equivelent in plasma monkeys or laser monkeys.
I've played this game, and, well, I'm not sure how to say this...
How about "THIS GAME IS BLEEPING AWESOME!!!!!"
When I saw the BFB (which I thought stood for big fat bloon untill the game corrected me) I thought, That thig is HUUUUGE!
On a more serious note, I loved how the towers complimented each other, and how you can now choose to target the strongest or weakest bloons.
Also, I think there should be a "Bloon of End" at level 100, with 10 BFBs inside it.
Just an idea. After all, every game needs a final boss.
This game is AWESOME! I absolutely loved Bloons TD 3, but this one seems to be better in almost every way. However, a few things:
1. Now that there's a cooldown period on the monkey storm, we should be able to build more than one monkey storm beacon.
2. Do banana farms do anything on apopalypse? If they don't, they really should, they're a really great addition to the game and it would be a shame to see them go to waste in an entire mode like that.
Hopefully they'll address these things when they add in the map editor and fix that fast forward button.
Victory, no tricks, no cheats. Got to level 80 before losing on Hard on Expert.
Mine works perfectly. I have never had any trouble with it an I have gotten to level 96 recently. My theory is that it works differently for everyone and randomly decides whether to work, have problems and then work, or to not work at all. Otherwise, it is a great game and I agree with whoever it was who said you should be able to earn the premium upgrades from different accomplishments. Have fun!

Dart Monkeys are cheap, and thus, useful in the beginning. Not reliable on later levels.
Darts go through one bloon, popping it, and still go forward to pop up to 2 bloons.
Monkey throws darts with bigger range, darts go further before disappearing.
Spikes go further and pop more.
Three spikes in a row, spikes go further.
Tack Shooters are slightly more expensive than Dart Monkeys, are good at corners and useful from beginning to end.
Shoots faster.
Shoots futher.
Blades are able to pierce, and are bigger with more accuracy, go faster.
Fire is able to pop lead bloons. Has 360 range. Shoots faster. Shoots further.
Boomerang Throwers are not-so-cheap, not-so-strong and not a lot of range, making it perfect for the levels before blimps.
Shoots through 7 bloons.
Pierces frozen bloons.
Glaives pop 12 bloons.
Lightsabres pop through 180 bloons.
Bomb Towers are quite expensive and have splash damage. Last upgrade is especially effective for blimps.
Bigger Bombs have more splash area.
Shoots further.
Missiles have more splash area, more accuracy, more speed, more fire rate.
Does 10x damage to MOABs and BFBs, normal damage to everything else. (20 MOAB Missiles destroy a MOAB, 40 MOAB Missiles destroy a BFB)
The Ice Tower freezes bloons, allowing other towers to shoot at them for a longer time. Frozen bloons are like lead bloons, immune to sharp things.
Doubled freeze time and more range.
Ice Tower now doubles as a glue tower, thawed bloons are slowed by 50%.
Pops bloons, the freezes them.
Slows everything in range by 66%. Bigger range. Does not slow down Zebras or Whites.
Bombs an area on the ground. Effective for almost anything.
Increases accuracy.
Doubles Firing Rate.
Smashes through two layers of bloons.
Doubles Firing Rate.
Slows bloons down, wears out over time.
Doubles length of glueyness. (is that a word?)
When bloons pop, they still have glue.
Pops glue bloons every 2 seconds (Ceramic bloons are immune)
Glues up to 20 bloons at once.
Increases attack range for all towers in range. Most useful with super monkeys. Its effects do not stack.
Increases Range.
Increases Firing Rate of all towers in range.
Allows targeting of camo bloons for all towers in range.
Destroys everything except blimps, with a cost of 1000 and a reload time of 1 minute and 30 seconds.
Learns new spells with each upgrade. EXTREMELY useful.
The sorceror pierces 7 bloons...
The mage has splash attack and can pop lead bloons...
The archmage uses whirlwinds to take them back, all bloons in whirlwind will be unglued and unfrozen... (Permafrost effects are also negated)
The wizard uses tornados that pop and push 120 bloons at a time...
Throws darts at super speed.
Increases Range.
Pops 2 bloons at once, pops frozen bloons.
Doubles firing rate, pops lead bloons.
Increased firing rate, shots split into three.
Good long-term investment. Generates bananas at the end of each round.
Increased to 120.
Increased to 250.
Increased to 500.
Increased to 2000.
Shoots darts whereever mouse is. Inaccurate and quick.
Less spread.
Faster Darts, pops 3 bloons at once.
Doubles rate of fire.
Increased rate of fire, massive bloon damage. 2 can destroy a BFB.
I am having a problem with this game and I'm not sure what's causing it. It happens no matter what browser I use. I have cleared internet history on each browser. I have tried playing on different sites, logged in and not logged in and keep having the same problem...the game skips levels! While this seems like it would be a good thing it really isn't. I don't get to move up in rank much because with skipping rounds there are no bloon counts that help bring the rank up. The other problem is not having enough monkey money after these skipped rounds to upgrade or buy more towers, making it more difficult to beat the game, especially on the difficult levels. Has this happened to anyone else?
