Shinmage's Megami Quest is a Cookie Clicker-esque webtoy with a JRPG twist. Able to run by itself in another tab or window, the game centers around creating a party of characters that slowly get stronger as they generate EXP by the second and level up. Each character has a strength rating relative to its level, and each area you visit requires a certain strength rating to complete, which in turn opens up new areas to conquer. Initially, you won't be able to do much, and the heroes you can pay to summon will be less than inspiring, but as you visit new areas, you'll unlock more powerful summoning spells, items, and even be able to upgrade your existing roster.
Simple? You bet. Megami Quest is a considerably more passive experience than other "idle" games, with a focus primarily on discovering all the possible items and party members, which is mostly a random affair. The biggest challenge will be "grinding" for high strength ratings, since some stages limit the number of heroes you can take (forcing you to "rest" the others) while still demanding a high strength rating to conquer. Most of the locations and character names (apart from our titular "goddess") appear to be taken from Norse mythology, and it feels like Megami Quest has a lot of potential to beef up its content with a story of some sort behind it. Still, it's cute and an interesting spin on the increasingly popular "idle" webtoy genre, and if you need something to run in another tab, you could do far worse than a growing cavalcade of legendary heroes.
Great little game. I guess I'll begin the discussion on party member unlocks.
Level 1 has a chance to summon: Askr*, Embala*, Norn**, Saga**, and Sigurd***.
Level 2 has a chance to summon: Fylgja***, Dis***, Heimdall***, Nanna****, Eir****, and Balder*****.
That's as far as I've gotten.
I can't figure out the tradeoff between summoning more members or not. Any hints?
The problem you're going to run into is that you need high level members to enter certain areas, because they limit how many people you can bring. Since your XP is split among all active members, having more causes each to level slower. Some areas allow you to bring everybody, though, so having a lot of members can help.
My goal has been to simply have one of each person. This is not an optimal strategy, though: the higher star members are far, far better than the lower star ones, and so having multiple 5-stars will get you more power.
But I gotta catch em' all, right?
To take the party member info a little further:

Generally speaking, you always want to just focus on levelling the rarest members at each level you have access to, and Resting out everyone else when possible. Sigurd (level 1 rare) is better than the level 2 commons. And at level 2, Balder is substantially better than everyone else, so really just go for duping him if you can. At level 3, Balder is still better than everyone I have gotten other than Tor, who is a monster.
I fixed some rarity errors on the list and added some more characters:

Is there a limit on the number of members of a particular class? I have 2 Loki's and have summoned a bunch of times but no more Loki's (or any Baldur's) have appeared.
@f.lynx - Doubt there is. It took me a lot of money to get my Loki, by which point I've would have had a small mini army of 10 Balders. So, it is mainly luck.
Items:
After Honey Wine, I have a Golden Apple, which doubles your current amount of Gold. I think I got it after beating Castle Utgard.
The item after Yggdrasil Seed is Sleipner's Bridle, which gives a boost to your search bar when you use it in an unbeaten area. I think I got after beating Gnipahellir Cave.
You'll find the King's Manuscripts randomly in Elivagar River. It opens up a new area, Hvergelmir Spring, which only one character can enter, requiring 50,000 strength.
I've been playing a lot today... I'm only missing the final slot for characters and a couple items.

A couple updates:
Laevateinn is not a special complete item - it drops occasionally in a couple places, and seems to drop quite a bit in the Gate of Hell.
While Fylgja is on the first line, she is a level 2 summon. I assume the same of Valkyrie (on line 2, but level 3) but I haven't gotten her yet.
And two questions:
Has anyone managed to complete Hvergelmir Spring? The completion bar doesn't even seem to be moving for me.
Has anyone found out the last three items?
About one of the levels:
The completion bar moves in Hvergelmir Spring, just veeeeery slowly. I'm at 2/10 completion after around 40 min.
Set a hero in Hvergelmir and walk away. Been grinding it for about 1.5 hours and half way there.

I have completed Hvergelmir Spring. It just goes very slowly. One of the last three items is a reward for completing that area.
To speed up Hvergelmir Spring, hang out in Gnipahellir Cave until Sleipnir's Bridle drops.

The last three items are: Ring of the Nibelungs from finishing Hvergelmir Spring (see my previous post), Gjallerhorn (if I remember, this sometimes drops in Hell,) and the last item is a trophy for game completion.

If you're missing the item in the first row of Found Items that's second from the right:
Once you have an inventory, spend some time in the Edge of Town until you've picked up a few Ales. Then, move on over to Hnitbjorg and wait for Kvasir's Blood, then use it.
Hrm. Can you get another Kvasir's Blood in Hnitbjorg once you've used the first one you got, or have I messed up my ability to get Honey Wine without resetting?

I dont seem to see any difference in the parties. I've been running with the main character, 3 loki's and 3 nana's and 3 eir's. I just go for the highest number of stars.

That said...fairly short game as these go, really. I'm used to Cookie Clicker and the Candy Boxes that take weeks of letting the window sit in the background to hit the endgame, while this one I finished within the day (and by finished, I mean not only getting all the levels but all the characters and items).
It's annoying that you can't sell or move characters that are at Rest.
@Tenzhi That may just be you, I'm able to sell and move my characters whether they're resting or not.
Ah, I was tricked by the greyed out buttons. How about this, then: It's annoying that the buttons are greyed out for no reason. ;)
Also: Buy a character for a million gold and immediately sell it back for 5? Was this game created by the minds behind Gamestop? ;)

Sounds like you haven't found a certain item yet. My Megami currently outstrips both Tor and Frigg by about 30K all 5-star and level 7.
Well, I got everything but the second to last character. The RNG isn't being kind to me. Millions and millions and millions of gold spent without success. Still, I appreciate one of these games where it doesn't take weeks to tediously grind through. Being able to finish in a single shift is convenient for me.
What is the item between the blood and the apple? And where might I find it? Thanks :)

Just export the save text and keep importing it until you get the charcater you want. :p

It's from the item from completing the Spring. You don't buy/summon her.

Use a Kavasir's Blood while you have Ale in your inventory to get Honey Wine.
I still lack the second-to-last character and the second-to-last item. I've spent zillions of dollars trying to get that character, with no luck -- do I need to get the item before I can get the character?

For anyone interested in ruining everything by cheating:
If you know how to get to the script console thing and enter commands, I figured out these commands:
game.gold = # : Sets your current gold to "#". Just entering in "game.gold" will show how much gold you currently have.
add_item("NAME") : Adds the named item to your inventory. Can exceed max inventory size with this. The names are not the strings you see as the item's name, but a four-letter abbreviation, for example the Golden Apple is "appl". Do include the "" around the item name, or it won't work.
item_type : Just entering this in will return an array of all the types of items, including their names. Useful for knowing what to type into add_item.
add_member("TYPE") : Works similarly to add_item, adding the chosen member to your party, but the member names are simply type00 - type20 in exactly the order they appear on the found list screen (so type00 is Megami, for example). Creating a party member this way does add it to the found list, but you won't see the summon animation that happens when you buy a new member normally.

I use inspect element to get there on firefox. Not sure exactly whether firefox itself or some add-on gave me the context menu item "inspect element", though.
Does completing specific levels give the new summon level buttons? I've only got access to summon level 1 and I think I've unlocked ALL the missions?

The character you're needing is Woden, who's ultra rare. Just keep trying and you'll eventually get him. The item you're needing, Gjallerhorn, drops in Hell. It's also really rare.

Does anyone else think that Jay needs to add an "idle" tag? Because it seems that idle games are the new big thing. I'm personally a fan of them and enjoy having one running, and I'd like to be able to find others easier.

Actually it's not just Embla. After beating the gmae I just tried out some cheats and gave me many Laevateinn at once. The classes get reversed. The 1 star characters become the strongest then it's the 2 stars etc, and the 5 stars characters become the weakest.
It's most likely because the low star characters could level up more often.

How do I leave a character in a specific location while the rest goes somewhere else? Is that possible at all?
Say, leaving an Embla or Askr to grind at a medium level while the main group pushes onwards?
Hi Foob! Unfortunately, that's not possible. Your party can only be in one location at once, and all you can do is enable/disable characters to create that party.
This is a fun little game, and an interesting take on the whole Cookie Clicker/ Candy Box type of game.
I must be really lucky or something, because I got Sigurd and Loki both on my second try of their respective classes. I can't say what'll happen when I get to level three (or get enough money to try for more level two characters) but this seems like a good start!

"The King's Manuscripts" which are dropped randomly in Elivagar River.
The strength/xp scaling in this game is very strange. For the first billion or so xp, more stars = stronger, as you might expect. As far as "beating" the game is concerned, that's all that really matters.
However, I have OCD, so I powerleveled all my characters to ~ 10^32 xp. Now my 1 star Askr far outclasses everyone else. My 1 star Woden loses a huge amount of strength with every star gained.
