GeoGuessr

DoraAnton Wallén's deviously simple puzzle game GeoGuessr is here to destroy your day, one stretch of scenic forest road at a time. Similar to Pursued, GeoGuessr uses Google Maps to take you to different locations, lets you look around, and then tells you to put a pin on the world map to guess where you are. Click and drag to look around you, and click the arrows to move forward or back. Use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in on the map in the upper-right corner, and click to place your pin. Take your time. Your score is determined by how far away from the actual location your guess was... and it's harder than you'd think, since you're often not given any famous landmarks, and sometimes you'll have to look very, very hard for any clues as to what part of the world you might be in. One forest looks like another, for example, but what language is that road sign in? Are those people wearing any distinctive clothes? Is that a kangaroo in the distance? As hard as it can sometimes be, however, it's also remarkably addictive, and showcases some of the more surprising sights of the world even as it tests your knowledge and deductive skills.

For those of you who are curious, the best possible score for a single guess is 6479, making the maximum total score 32395. You have to be within 12 meters or so in order to get that score, though.

22748. Not bad. Nailed 3 of them, one was in the same vicinity, and one was waaaaaaaay off.

I'd really like some options to limit where you can be placed. Ending up in Yukon twice in the same game wasn't fun.

30887. The second location was a doozy - a dirt road in the middle of nowhere - but the rest were very easy. But its distance calculator is very, very sensitive: one of mine was on a bridge smack-dab over the middle of a river, so I put my mark about as accurately as humanly possible, but it still gave me something like 0.047 km from the target.

Nowhere near as fun as Pursued. Mainly because I was nowhere near anything every time. Maybe I just had a bad run but I found myself plonked in the middle of nothingness each round. No buildings, no signs and the odd car I encountered had the possibly helpful bits blurred out.

It was more like a boring car trip than a race around the world.

6140 points. None of the locations had anything significant, or any readable signs, so they could've all been located within a few continents, heck one of them could have been in Denmark which was also my guess.

I set rules for myself where I could use all available resources online, and I found some interesting web pages that give circular distances to points - that allowed me to look around the game until I found direction (or destination) signs, then correlate those distances to multiple locations, that let me narrow down the target locations to a fairly reasonable margin of error.

There have been a couple or SWAGs (I couldn't decide between Cambodia and Thailand, I got tired of trying to compare different letters in languages I don't know and guessed wrong), but there have been 3 or 4 pics (in the last 3 runs) where I've gotten it down to within 4 meters.

Surprisingly addictive, even if I did have moments where I was squinting at blurry shop signs going "What language is that...?"
Turns out I was getting put in Russia a lot which explained my problems there

Four out of 5 maps were in the middle of nowhere with miles and miles of nothing. Not a good introduction to this game.

Got a final score of 22610, in a challenge against you, CrankYanker.

I used mostly Google Maps to pinpoint my locations.

Ha! Took a couple of days, but I managed a perfect-score game. First four locations were relatively easy - Illinois, Alaska, France, and Mississippi - but then the last one was in South Korea, which had me totally stumped until I figured out that street view is only available for two areas of the country, Seoul and Busan. It was still pretty confusing, though, because the street view was discontinuous - you hit the arrow and ended up somewhere miles away.

Here's my first score: http://bit.ly/16TYp5d

That was fun :)

32391. I was within a meter on most of the targets. Oddly, it gave me 6478 four times, and 6479 once. Fun game...it allows me to use a lot of diffrent Internet skills. One thing - from my Mac running Safari 6, I am not able to share the URL. When I click on the button, nothing happens. Maybe it's my pop-up blocker? I'll troubleshoot and post back.

Cheers -

Huh. I was trying to figure out how in the world people were getting these huge scores, when my highest score was only 11000 or so. Then I realized that people were searching online for these. That's a completely different game than the one I was playing. It seemed much more fun to me to try and guess where you were without using any other resource, or even without traveling more than a hundred feet from your starting point (just enough to get a look at things that were already within view. What's your highest score WITHOUT leaving the game page? No Google searching, etc. Mine's 11,000. Gauntlet thrown down.

@worlebird

I completely agree with you. Since I started playing this game I have been doing it with NO Google searches. It makes the game more fun and more challenging.

So far my highest score is 16113.

AUG 18, 2013, top 32 395 score. Of course I've used Google Search and Google Maps, there is no other way to be close to perfect solution. Regards from Poland.
