elleNeutral: Christmas Escape ToyIt's that merry time of year again— celebrations, good friends, lots of presents, decorations and (huzzah!) a festive new creation from Neutral: Christmas Escape Toy. Ah, thank you, Neutral. What a thoughtful gift! Best of all, this is a gift that's made to last: a mini escape game that gives no signs of temporary status unlike Neutral's Christmas banner escape which shows up just once a year during the month of December. You want to feel like a kid on Christmas who is locked inside his room and needs to puzzle his way out? Well, maybe that didn't come out right. Either way, it's the usual scenario: follow the changing cursor to explore the holiday setting, looking for connections to solve riddles that will lead the way through the exit.

While it's always a happy occasion to be treated to Neutral's designing talents because of charming artwork and creative puzzles, this particular offering includes a minigame that could add a sour note of frustration: a GameBoy style platform game that is much cuter in theory than it proves to be in actuality, demonstrating that action platform games and point-and-click mechanics are not close friends. Yet it's not unlike Neutral to have such a trick up the sleeve and, like the chicks minigame in Lights, this game is needed to get a necessary clue but it has no skip or easy mode. There is something to be said for patience, perseverance, talent or plain luck because, however you get through it, it's quite satisfying to win when your wits are being tested. Either because of it or despite that extra obstacle, Christmas Escape Toy presents a rewarding experience for your escaping merriment—and it's all wrapped up with that special Neutral touch.

Christmas Escape Toy Walkthrough

EXPLORATION

Door wall

Note the game - you can pick it up but it does nothing right now. Seems to need something other than batteries?
Note the door is code-locked.
Behind the larger white present is a star and the number 23. Remember this.
Look at the train set - take the crayon in one of the cars. And no, there's no key hidden in a tie this time (bonus points if you get that reference!).
Back out to the main view and go right.

Desk Wall

Note the mobile - and especially the arrangement of the ornaments.
The upper right drawer holds some kind of part - take it.
The lower right drawer needs a key and the lock looks like it's silver.
The middle drawer on the filing cabinet has an AA battery - take it.
The bottom drawer on the filing cabinet is locked too, and the lock looks like it's brass.
The painting thankfully isn't wobbly but take the crayon on top.
Note that the second painting has buttons you can light up and a larger one you can press.
Back out to the main view and go right.

Tree wall

Note you can zoom in on the chick drawing but nothing else for now.
Look in the sketch book and make note of the numbers on the third page.
There's a box of crayons, and there are three empty slots - but we've only picked up 2 so far...
Note the left cupboard has a number lock on it.
Note that there is some kind of a charger thing on top of the cupboard.
Back out to the main view and go right.

Bed wall

We can't get at the top bunk for now...
The lower bunk has some weird spiked head sitting on the chicks - take it.
Under the bed is a third crayon! Yes! Take it!
Move the other presents aside and see...
a brass key JUST out of reach! And something behind the presents on the far side of the other room.
Back out to the main view. Right! Now let's get to the escaping!

Crayon box

You should have 3 crayons - go back to the box and put 'em in, and you get a...

Silver key

Go and unlock the desk drawer and see a...

Box with letters?

Code lock on door

We now have everything we need to open the code lock -
Remember the "star = 23" we saw earlier?
Look at the box of letters again. There's a star on the second row, third column.
Use this information and the numbers from the sketchbook and get the password:

AHEAD

Now to open the door and... not so fast!

Second room exploration

Note the painting on the left and the arrangement of the ornaments.
Behind the stack of presents is a...

"Lazy tong" (points again if you get the reference)

Tucked between the presents on the right is a SD card - take it.
Note the light fixture - you can click either one then the arrow will replay the sequence. Interesting.

Filing cabinet

Let's use that lazy tong and get the brass key. Open the bottom of the filing cabinet to get a...

Remote control

Say, I'll bet that's what's in the other room... but batteries not included...
and we only have one AA battery right now. -_-

Handheld game

Slip the SD card in and...
"Hyper Kobito Bros."??? O.o
Just take your time in this mini-game, there's nobody chasing you and no clock counting down.
Note: If you die, click the bottom button to restart.

At first, avoid all enemies and go get that question-mark block. Once you have the trident, walk up next to each enemy and hit the square button. Ta-da, no more enemy. For the spiky car, avoid it the same way you did the first time, then stay on the ladder until it comes close enough to kill. (It doesn't go as far as the ladder, so you're safe there.)

With thanks to Reka for providing this helpful (and easy!) way to complete the mini-game!

Hey! Stop playing games and get back to escaping!

Go back to the desk wall and punch in the gold coins

Think of a phone dial - 1,5,6,7,8, then the bottom button and get the...

second AA battery.

RC racer fun

Go into the drawer and place the two AA batteries - now you can take the remote control!
Go back under the bed and use it on the opening... Look out!
Grab the RC racer and fish out the...

D cell battery

The blue cupboard door
Right. Time we got this thing open.

We've actually had the clues for a while:
The painting with the ornaments and the mobile.

Go down each of the strings on the mobile and you should trace out a series of numbers:

2 6 0 5

Dial that combo in, and you get a...

Toy part

Note: If the combo doesn't take make sure you looked close-up at both the painting and mobile!

Toy assembly

At least it isn't a wacky Tesshi-e construct!
Go to the top of the cupboard and put in the battery, then put the feet, body, and head on in order.
Press the button and make a note of the robot's actions.

The eyes light L R R, L R L

Light fixture

Note: You MUST have assembled the robot first and pressed its button.

Press the lights in sequence -

L R R L R L then play.

If you did it right, grab the key (looks familiar)...
Allright, let's open the door and...

THIRD ROOM?! Is this an escape mansion or something???
Let's look around...

There's a panel with some familiar buttons...
Use the lazy tong to open the hatch... grab the ladder and... HEY COME BACK HERE!!! >.<

Oh well, back to the first room, I guess.

I think I know where the ladder goes.

Yep. We can now get to the top bunk.
Turn the tablet on and view the clip.
Make a note of the sequence of actions required.

Go back to the third room -

Go to the button panel and key the sequence in -

right, up, round, right, down, left, square.

Open sesame! Get a...

rocket pack??

I think I know where this goes.

Back to the toy robot and put the rocket pack on, press the button, and DUCK!
*boom* so there's the exit?
Can't get up there, but maybe the ladder... and we're out!

Watch the whole ending!

Any hints for the blue cabinet code?

blue cabinet hint

You need to use the mobile and the picture in the second room to get it.

I'm having trouble with the blue cabinet as well.

I can't quite figure out how to turn the mobile and the picture into a four-digit code.

Only one thing left (I think). I need

a battery for the robot

Reply

@kurt:

Have you seen the remote-controlled car yet?

Reply

Four digit code:

Use the mobile and the picture in the second room

You need four numbers. There are four columns on the mobile.

You need to "apply" each column of the mobile to the picture. Not the picture to the mobile.

Start with the first item in each column. Example, the snowflake in the first column. So, start at the snowflake on the picture.

Now trace your way around the picture.

snowflake, ribbon, tree, snowman, bell, ball. This should give your first number.

Thanks for the help, Itt!

Got it. Was using the wrong tool to get that thing in the distance. Now...

is that hole in the wall by the Christmas tree the end of the game?

Reply

Wait, I was supposed to

open the door to the next room first? I was overthinking that the letter box and the star referred to the alphabet. oops

Never mind. Went back and tried the most obvious thing. I'm out!

That ending is just adorable.

Reply

Can someone explain how the letters puzzle (with the clue [star]=23) is decoded? The walkthrough didn't really do that.

Very Nice Game. I hate looking at walkthroughs, but sometimes your brain needs a nudge. I wasn't sure what I saw through the hole was

the remote control car

, so I had to look at the walkthrough to be sure. And I had to smack myself because the picture and mobile puzzle was similar to others I'd done without help in other games, but today it stumped me until I checked the walkthrough. And also big props to Itt because his explanation was so beautifully thorough, and didn't make me feel like an idiot. I needed his explanation even after the walkthrough because I wanted a more comprehensive explanation. Nice going.

To Twinkie23, imagine the letter box as a 3-column high, 4-column across grid. Place the numbers 123 from top to bottom along the left side of the grid, and the numbers 1234 from left to right along the top. The hint shows that the star is at the intersection where 2 (from the left) and 3 (from the top) meet. Now apply that same principle to the other numbers provided and you should have a 5-letter word. I hope this helps.

Reply

i liked the game until i had to

play the handheld game. this is too hard.

oh well.

Reply

Actually the handheld game is rather easier than the walkthrough makes it sound:

You don't have to dodge the spiky car to get the coin -- you can just go past it while it's off to the right, then come back when you have the trident and use that to kill it.

Reply

hmmm. well i still have no idea how to do it. maybe there's screenshots or maybe a video that will be easier to read.

Reply

Ordinarily, I hate platform games, but the one in-game here is pretty easy. Just take your time, there's nobody chasing you and no clock counting down.

Oh neutral, how we love you!

Such an adorable game- and I only needed a push on the 4-digit lock.

I hope I was not the only one who

cheered and said "FLY, LITTLE ROBOT, FLY" when I gave him his jet-pack.

All: Sorry that my walkthrough sucks. :(

Ah a refreshing Neutral escape. I have to say, the graphics are in a different style than usual, and not as clean and organized. I'm sure she's developing as an artist but I long for the previous styles.

Reply

Meterman, it doesn't suck

the mini game is just hard is all.

Reply

Haha, even Santa is feeling the economic crunch. He had to lay off 4 reindeer, apparently.

iowahawks471 December 17, 2012 12:32 AM

Sooo... the whole time I was playing,

I was a toy escaping from Santa's bag?

Reply

It would have been better if the mini-game allowed keyboard control. Or else didn't have a moving enemy/hazard.

Other than that, this was pretty good for a Neutral mini-escape. I wish they'd make a full escape again, though.

Reply

@Tenzhi, except that

the game buttons themselves are a clue later on. (Which is exactly the sort of multipurposing that makes me love Neutral's games.)

That part wouldn't work, or wouldn't work nearly as well, if you could just bypass the game controls and use your keyboard.

Reply

This game deserves the sixth mushroom. One of the best escape games ever.

Can someone explain how the blue cupboard is decoded?

Okay, for the video game part, how am I supposed to jump to the left to get that question mark block? It is all but impossible to do both actions at the same time.

Gosh, I missed Neutral so, so much. This is a lovely game, makes me so nostalgic of their others. :c

Reply

@jesscht84

You aren't supposed to. Keep going right, then backtrack.

Reply

Hi @jesscht84.
I had to find a walkthrough on youtube to see what I was missing on the video game. After you get past the spiky truck, you go up two ladders, and you're headed left...

Charge to the left without stopping at the end of the platform. If you stop, you'll go straight down every time. If you charge off the edge, you'll make it to the next platform.

After you make the jump and get the trident...

Stand under the ??? and jump, and then grab the trident.

...play with the controls to see what you can do with the trident.

The square button causes you to jab the trident to the left or right, depending on which way you are facing.

I'm a big fan of Neutral games, but I found this video game very annoying.

Reply

I'm pretty sure there's an alternative ending, this being a Neutral game and all. And I think the key is the crayon box. Note how 5 crayons make a sound when clicked: the red, pink, blue, cyan and green ones.

Reply

Intelligent game, but please don't promote riding reindeers for entertainment. Also there's some violence in this game :(
