ArtbegottiSnakes On A Cartesian PlaneA wise philosopher named Samuel L. Jackson once asked, "If a snake eats a pellet in the forest, and no one is there to control the snake, does it actually earn a point?" He then said something else we can't repeat here and there was a whole movie about it and yada yada, you know the rest. But as for the former quote, you might be tempted to consider the strange possibilities of puzzling variations on a snake game with Netgrind's Snakes On A Cartesian Plane.

You probably already know the rules of a snake game. [Arrow] keys move the snake, eat the food, avoid your own tail. But what if you're a sea snake, and you've got to dive underwater to catch your food? What if you're a mamushi and the food you eat becomes hazardous to you later? Between time limits, contorted controls, and crazy warping, you'll find 28 different variations on the same basic snake principle to tackle. Clearing certain milestones will unlock other snakes, so keep on playing until you discover why all those snakes are on that Cartesian plane.

Snakes on a Cartesian Plane:
Variations from Level to Level

Classic

Just like usual: navigate with the arrow keys.

Viper

Only turns clockwise.

Sidewinder

Moves one pixel sideways at regular intervals.

Sea Snake

Food slowly drops offscreen.

Hognose

You only have to touch the food to swallow it.

Mamushi

Once you eat a piece of food, the location becomes deadly.

Trouser

Every space is food!

Boa

Every fifth pellet makes the walls get smaller.

Mamba

The walls don't lead where you think they do.

Burmese

You can see the next 7 food pellets, but you can only eat the current one.

Solid Snake

Two food pellets appear on screen at once. When you eat one, you pop out of the other one.

Asp

3x3 squares appear on screen. The center square is deadly, the rest is food.

Krait

You are three squares wide.

Grass Snake

Every so often, your body turns into a string of deadly squares and your head starts anew.

Coral Snake

Your controls are reversed!

Rat Snake

For every food pellet you eat, two deadly squares appear.

Cobra

You're invisible except for your tail and everywhere you turn.

King Snake

Your food moves fast! (Hint: Charge it head-on.)

Queen Snake

You have a time limit to eat each pellet.

Rattlesnake

Four squares that may or may not be food appear at one time.

Ringneck

Every other square of you is pretty much non-existent.

Death Adder

There are deadly squares arranged in a grid pattern.

Ouroboros

Whenever you eat something, your tail becomes your head and vice versa.

Python

Same as mamushi, but the food is the same color as the deadly squares.

Puff Adder

Your food moves - slower than in King Snake, but randomly.

Boomslang

Like mamushi, but you can only see the deadly squares when you're turning.

Plissken

Like Mamushi, but you can't see the deadly squares at all!

Passage

Can't face left.

Pretty sure Ringneck is glitched. It's stuck at 99%, no matter how many times I hit my own tail, and 99% shouldn't even be possible to get because you need to hit your tail 50 times. It should be at 98%.

...Man, I wish there was an edit button.
There's also no mute button, and I'm not too much a fan of whatever style of music this is. It's not bad, though. And the game itself is pretty fun, and you can play as solid snake YES.

Reece don't know about the Ringneck yet but just hit + or - for volume

but *grins* this takes me back to my old Oric :)

@Reece, The percentage shown on Ringneck is glitched indeed, but the internal control is fine. Once you die 50 times by hitting your tail you'll unlock it alright. It's a bit annoying, but keep playing and you'll get it eventually.

The games themselves are pretty good, but what really amazes me is how the dev managed to create so many of them, throwing in twist after twist even when it seems there can't be anything else to change. 5 mushrooms for the great display of game designing!

This game is a bit of a misnomer: It's not a Cartesian plane as you loop around when you get to the edges, that would make this a Riemman plane.

So, anyone else beaten the developer's score on all 28 of the games? and then

that bottom-left space becomes "OoO" and when you click on it all that comes up is "QXDCDZSSAEQ" ... any ideas?

Reply

e7odie, I have the same issue. I got this surprise and don't know what to do. I tried some clicking and typing at some places but... nothing :/.

I'm pretty sure I am seeing some sort of bug in Rattlesnake:

If I try to eat a fake pellet (and harmlessly pass over it), then that space becomes an obstacle once I eat the real pellet.

This gets very frustrating very quickly--I think my high score here is only 6. Does anyone else see this?

@bubblecamera(walkthrough)
for plissken

you can see the deadly squares once each time after you eat a pellet

@OtherBill

does the fake pellet become an obstacle after eating the real pellet or does the fake pellet become an obstacle after you pass over it because if it's passing over then there is nothing wrong

Reply

@Bobin Hood:

They might become as soon as I pass over them--haven't tried to re-eat a fake pellet.

Still, between the old obstacles, the new obstacles, and the new pellets that I haven't tried yet, Rattlesnake turns into a memory test very quickly. :-(
