Weekday Escape

GrinnypOne of the favorite all time room escape designers here at Weekday Escape is the inimitable Tesshi-e, and one of the favorite things they like to do is hide a "lucky coin" inside a room to offer a second, alternative escape scenario to most of their games. Once in a blue moon, however, Tesshi-e likes to change things up and give us room escapers a bonus and an overabundance of riches by making the escape less about getting out of a room and more about finding as many lucky coins as we can. That means that Tesshi-e has favored us with a sequel to The Happy Escape and produced The Happy Escape 2 just in time for the mid-week break.

Happy Escape 2Join us, will you, for one of Tesshi-e's classic strange scenarios. "He" has invited you to visit and has offered coffee and cake, but in order to get the treats you must scour the locked room for happy coins, and of course you end up not only solving your way out (hopefully), but you end up being the one who provides the treats as well. It makes you think that the designer has had some bad experiences somewhere down the line, because what kind of host makes you provide your own food to escape? Yes, in a nod back to Escape from the Hexagonal Room you simply cannot get out until you brew the coffee and plate up the cake. Hey, at least this time you don't have to make a full breakfast.

There is only one escape scenario in this little charmer that features the standard gorgeous Tesshi-e visuals and a jazzy little tune to help pass the time while solving a nice selection of logical puzzles. Once again the wobbly picture puzzle is back and once again the designer has thought up yet another new solution, so even that shouldn't cause many complaints. The usual stellar controls and competent English translation round out the perfect mid-week Tesshi-e experience complete with a lovely treat at the end. Time to get happy!

Exploration

Spoiler
  • You begin facing a wall that is nothing but window. To the left is a large potted plant. To the right is a table and two chairs.

  • Click on the plant for a close up.

  • In the top of the plant is a small item, click on it (Happy Coin #1).

  • Once you have the happy coin, back up then click on the table for a close up.

  • On the table is a corkscrew, take it.

  • Notice that the table looks like a clock face. There is a heart decoration on the table, and a hole in the middle where you can place something.

  • Back up and turn right.

  • You are now facing a wall that has a piano on the left and a shelving unit on the right.

  • Click on the piano for a close up. Looks like the keyboard is locked.

  • Click underneath the piano (near the pedals) and you will see another happy coin lurking, but you can't reach it.

  • Back up twice.

  • On top of the piano are two Mr. Birdy figurines. If you click on them for a close up you will find that they are labeled "Fourth" and "First".

  • Click on the shelving unit for a close up.

  • There's lots of stuff on the shelves, so let's explore carefully.

  • On the top shelf on the left is a frame, click on it for a close up.

  • There's a happy coin inside, but it is screwed in. Looks like we need a screwdriver! Back up.

  • On the top shelf on the right is a coffee grinder. You can open the drawer, but it is empty. Back up.

  • On the middle shelf on the left is a wooden hippo. Click on it for a close up to see a panel that is screwed shut. Back up.

  • On the middle shelf on the right is a strange machine. Yes, that looks like the thing from Mild Escape 4 and Escape to the Spa. The machine needs a coin, but the happy coin won't work. Back up.

  • On the bottom shelf on the left is a wooden box with three triangular buttons. On the right is another Mr. Birdy, this one labeled "second".

  • Back up and turn right.

  • You are now facing a wall with a picture on the left and the door out on the right.

  • Click on the picture for a close up. Yes, it's our old friend the wobbly picture puzzle. Nice picture of a drip coffee maker.

  • The door is locked and you can't do anything with it at the moment.

  • Turn right.

  • You are now facing a low cabinet with three sets of double doors. There are also some items on top of the cabinet.

  • The left set of doors needs a four letter code, and there's a hint: Birds 1445.

  • The middle set of doors needs a three digit code, and there's a hint, a spade over a heart.

  • The right set of doors just seems to need a key.

  • On top of the cabinet on the left is some device that is holding a lovely piece of strawberry cake. This thing needs a four digit code and has a hint: diamond x club.

  • On top of the cabinet in the middle is another Mr. Birdy, this one "Third".

  • On top of the cabinet on the right is what looks like part of a coffee maker like the one in the wobbly picture puzzle.

  • Turn right and you are facing the window wall again.

  • Time to solve some puzzles!

The Wobbly Picture Puzzle

Spoiler
  • Turn right (or left) twice to face the door and the picture.

  • Click on the picture for a close up.

  • When clicking on the corners, did you notice the letters underneath the picture?

  • There is an e under the upper right, a c under the lower right, an o under the upper left, and an f under the lower left corner.

  • Maybe the picture is a clue?

  • Spoiler
    • The order you want to click the corners is indeed indicated by the picture, which is of coffee.

    • You want to click on the corners in the proper order to spell the word "coffee".

    • The order is lower right, upper left, lower left, lower left, upper right, upper right.

  • When you've solved the puzzle the picture will lift up, revealing an alcove.

  • Inside is a strange machine that says happy coin. Inside the slot is a happy coin, take it (Happy Coin #2).

  • To the right of the machine is a glass object, take it (part of a coffee maker).

  • Underneath the machine is a note, take it.

  • The note is a grid with three columns, six rows, and symbols of circles, squares, and triangles inside. Note the arrow going from top to bottom.

  • To the right of the machine is a small switch, click on it and enjoy the cut-scene.

  • Once the cut-scene is over, back up and turn left (or right) twice to face the window wall.

  • Click on the plant for a close up and you will find the coin that fell off of the fan (Happy Coin #3).

  • Take the coin and back up.

The Wooden Box

Spoiler
  • Turn right to face the piano.

  • Click on the shelving unit for a close up.

  • Click on the wooden box on the bottom shelf left for a close up.

  • Have we seen a clue for this?

  • Spoiler
    • The clue is the note we got from the wobbly picture puzzle.

    • Look again at the shapes in the grid from top to bottom, specifically the triangles (since the buttons on the box are triangle shaped).

    • Notice that in each row there is only one triangle, and it is either on the left, in the middle, or on the right.

    • Going from top to bottom (as indicated by the arrow), you need to push the buttons in the following order: left, middle, middle, right, middle, right.

  • Once you've pushed the buttons in the correct order the box will open up. Take the dish set from inside.

  • Click inside the box again and the green bottom will lift up, revealing a spade key. Take the spade key.

  • Back up twice and turn left or right twice to face the wall with the low cabinet.

  • Click on the right set of doors for a close up and use the spade key to open them.

  • Take the bottle and the screwdriver.

  • Back up twice.

Using the Screwdriver

Spoiler
  • Turn left (or right) twice to face the wall with the piano.

  • Click on the shelving unit for a close up.

  • Click on the frame on the top left shelf for a close up, then use the screwdriver to open it and get the happy coin (Happy Coin #4).

  • Note the clue underneath, a spade and the number 5712.

  • Back up, then click on the wooden hippo on the middle left shelf.

  • Take the item from inside the hippo (matches).

  • While the matches are still in close up, click on the box to open it and get a plain coin.

  • Pull up the screwdriver from your inventory and click on the back to open it and get a club key.

  • Back up twice.

The Piano

Spoiler
  • Click on the piano for a close up.

  • Use the club key to unlock the cover over the keyboard.

  • Inside you will find another happy coin (Happy Coin #5), a clue (a diamond and the number 43), and a metal rod. Take the happy coin and the metal rod.

  • Click on the bottom of the piano near the pedals for a close up.

  • Use the metal rod to retrieve the happy coin underneath (Happy Coin #6).

  • Back up twice.

The Left Cabinet Doors

Spoiler
  • Turn left (or right) twice to face the low cabinet.

  • Click on the left set of doors for a close up.

  • There are two clues here, the word Birds and the numbers 1445.

  • What does it mean?

  • Spoiler
    • There are four numbers in 1445, and there are four birds scattered throughout the room.

    • The first Mr. Birdy is "First", and the 1st letter in "First" is F.

    • The second Mr. Birdy is "Second", and the 4th letter in "Second" is O.

    • The third Mr. Birdy is "Third" and the 4th letter in "Third" is R.

    • The fourth Mr. Birdy is "Fourth", and the 5th letter in "Fourth" is T.

    • Therefore the code is FORT.

  • Enter the four letter code in the lock and click on the doors to open them.

  • Inside you will find a can of coffee, take it.

  • Back up twice.

The Middle Cabinet Doors

Spoiler
  • Click on the middle cabinet door for a close up.

  • The clue here seems to indicate a spade divided by a heart.

  • And the code lock needs a three digit number.

  • We know from the picture frame that spade equals 5712.

  • However, although there is a heart on the table/clock thing, and it is underneath the number 12, dividing 5712 by 12 does not get a code that unlocks the cabinet.

  • Maybe there's something else we need to do?

  • Spoiler
    • Remember the table has a hole in the middle? Do we have something that can go in there?

    • Back up and turn right to face the window wall.

    • Click on the table for a close up.

    • The metal rod we got from the piano might fit in that hole, so use the metal rod on the hole.

    • Once the rod has been placed notice the shadow it casts. The table isn't a clock, it's a sundial!

    • And the shadow points to the number 7.

    • 5712 divided by 7 is 816, which is the code.

  • Back up from the table and turn left.

  • Click on the middle set of cabinet doors.

  • Enter the code you just discovered into the lock.

  • Click on the doors to open them and take the object inside (an alcohol lamp).

  • Back up twice.

Getting Thirsty?

Spoiler
  • We now have an awful lot of stuff in our inventory, and much of it seems to be geared towards making coffee.

  • Let's make some then, shall we?

  • Pull up the coffee can from your inventory, then click on the lid to open it.

  • Turn left (or right) twice to face the piano.

  • Click on the shelving unit, then click on the coffee grinder on the upper right shelf.

  • Use the coffee can on the grinder, then click on the grinder handle to grind the coffee.

  • Click on the drawer to open it, then use the glass coffee maker thing on the ground coffee to pick it up.

  • Pull up the coffee can from your inventory and you will see that there was a happy coin hidden inside, take it (Happy Coin #7).

  • Back up twice, then turn left (or right) twice to face the low cabinet.

  • Click on the coffee maker on top of the cabinet on the right for a close up.

  • Looks like we need to add water.

  • Pull up the blue bottle you got from the cabinet into close up.

  • Use the corkscrew on the bottle to open it.

  • Use the bottle on the coffee maker to add water.

  • Now add the glass part that has the ground coffee.

  • Now add the alcohol burner that you got from the cabinet to the assembly.

  • Use the matches to light the burner and voila, coffee!

  • Now use the cup and plate set on the coffee maker to get the coffee.

  • Once you get the coffee you should see a clue, a club and the number 76.

  • Back up.

Let Them Eat Cake

Spoiler
  • Click on the machine on the left side of the cabinet for a close up.

  • Click on the front of the machine to see the code key, which needs a four digit number.

  • Note the clue as well, diamond x club.

  • Spoiler
    • We know that diamond is 43.

    • We also know that club is 76.

    • Therefore multiply the two numbers to get the code, 3268.

  • Enter the code and push the small white button to the left.

  • Use the plate set to pick up the now free cake.

  • Notice the happy coin that was hidden below the cake and take it (Happy Coin #8).

  • Back up twice.

The Non-Happy Coin

Spoiler
  • Turn left (or right) twice to face the piano.

  • Click on the shelving unit for a close up.

  • Click on the middle shelf right for the strange purple machine.

  • Use the plain coin on the machine and click on the knob above the slot.

  • The machine gives you the plain coin back. Take it.

  • Use the coin again on the slot and click on the knob.

  • This time you get a happy coin (Happy Coin #9).

  • Take the happy coin and back up twice.

Getting Out

Spoiler
  • Okay, we've found 9 happy coins so far, and we have a lovely snack and some hot coffee.

  • Let's blow this joint, shall we?

  • Turn right to face the door and the wobbly picture puzzle.

  • Click on the picture for a close up, then click on the picture to raise it up.

  • Note the machine that says "happy coin" has a slot.

  • Use your happy coins on the machine. It indicates that you have 9 coins.

  • Click the button to the left to get your coins back.

  • Looks like we're missing a coin.

  • Maybe it's in our inventory somewhere?

  • Pull up the bottle that had the water in it.

  • Click on the bottom of the bottle to turn it over. Yes, there's the last happy coin!

  • Take the happy coin from the bottom of the bottle (Happy Coin #10).

  • Once again use your happy coins on the machine.

  • Click the button to get the coins back.

  • After you get the coins from the slot, notice that there is something else in there. Take the item (heart key).

  • Back up, then click on the door for a close up.

  • Use the key on the door and you've escaped!

  • Enjoy the coffee, cake, and conversation.

  • Happy Coin will bring happiness to you!!

I must admit that I'm at a bit of a loss.

Spoiler

I can't figure out the birds cupboards. I thought the numbers referred to a letter in the word birds which doesn't work, or to the birds and their numbers, but there's only 4.

Reply

Is there a Happier Coin ending? :P

Reply

@ThemePark

In a way, you're right. The thing about the birds, is they each have a word.

Thanks Tenzhi. That's the track I was on, I just had the wrong way of doing it, hence why I was expecting 5 of them.

10 Happy coins, today I'm getting a LOT of happiness! ^^

Hm. It's been a few years since I had a math class, but

Spoiler

Spade/Heart, aka 5712/12, should come out to 476. Am I missing something?

Reply

I'd claim power of posting, but it was really power of looking up a walkthrough. I was missing an item.

Reply

Woohoo...made it through before the walk through was posted! (First time for that I think)

I was stuck on 9 coins for a while until

Spoiler

I found a coin hiding behind the bush

It's always the obvious ones that get you.

Reply

Nicholas,
Look again at the table.

Spoiler

The heart is on a clock. The value could be any of those 12 values.

Spoiler

You need to use that hole in the middle to find your answer.

I have 8 coins. I cannot get the item (a coin?) under the piano. I assume I need a long stick. Can't find it anywhere. I have clicked everywhere. Please help.

Reply

Wow. Either this game was pretty easy for a Tesshi-e one, or I'm actually getting better at escaping these rooms.

That said, I most likely *would* have been stuck if I had not

Spoiler

begun randomly clicking all over random items in my inventory out of desperation.

@neo1973 and @microwiz:

Spoiler

Try doing the same thing I did and carefully check every item in your inventory.

I can see it under the matches, and I thought it was there, but struggling to get it out of there. Won't give in and check grinny's spoiler, though

I'm getting a failure to load. It's stopping at 30% and refuses to budge any further. Clearing the cache didn't help either. Other Tesshi-e games still work just fine. Any help would be appreciated!

Love Tesshi-e. Best in the field.

By the way - does ANYONE know the name of that music he uses for background ambiance??? and the artist/instrumentalist playing it?

I'm pretty sure I heard it in an Alec Baldwin movie.

Reply

Tesshi-e (and most other Japanese designers, I've noticed) make a point of crediting their music sources. In this particular game, go to Function > Thanks for the credits.
