DoraThe Old TreetCreepy? Cute?... Both? Why not? RedDwarf Games blends point-and-click adventure with interactive art in The Old Tree. In this moody but lovely little gem, you play a small, crawly... something... that hatches deep underground. It's clear you want to get out and up, but when you're a little squirmy... green... thingy, the world is very big and scary, and you'll have to figure out the strange logic of the world you're in to make your way forward.

Click around to clear the way forward, finding new ways to interact with your environment and remove obstacles. It's an odd little experience where the most frustrating thing you might encounter is simply spending a lot of time watching your new grubby little friend crawl slowly along the ground. The art is beautiful and the environments manage to be both alien and familiar. Don't expect it to make a whole lot of sense, but if you're looking for a bit of otherworldly beauty to brighten your day, The Old Tree is the perfect choice.

This really is beautiful, but it's so dark it gives me a headache to play more than one or two locations. I get it...really I do...but just being dark doesn't create good gameplay.

I agree it's dark. I think that's part of its charm.

Very moody and atmospheric and in a dark way very cute. I love how the little guy looks like an apple/octopus sort of.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Loved this game. This was done extremely well and is so bizarre and adorable that it's really enchanting.

i dont get where the heck an old tree is in this game!!!! i really liked the game, and it was very simple, but it doesn't really make sense. And Mama likes her nonsensical interactive art games to make sense!! ;P

meg,

you were in the tree and escaped at the end!

That was pretty cool. Nothing overly hard, but still fun.

I dunno if it's just me, but I thought it looked more like Baby Cthulhu. Off to terrorize and enslave new worlds, I guess.

dsrtrosy,

At the very least it helps create good atmosphere, which is a key factor in immersive gameplay. Admittedly I had to turn up my screen brightness to make out some of the objects (I'm sensitive to headaches, too) and that pretty much solved any visual issues from that point.

Carny Asada,

Baby Cthulu cracked me up! XD The first thing that came to my mind on seeing the "creature" was a turnip. A creepy, crawly turnip.

Finally, someone is giving Amanita designs a run for their money. I really loved this game, I didn't find it too dark at all. Usually I get annoyed when the only gameplay is 'click what's clickable' but this pulled it off. Perfect.

Though I loved the graphics, it was too dark and in order to play the game I had to look at the walkthrough and then click around the area

wherever it said there was a door

i wish i could have seen it more :/

My only question: why was a dandelion growing on a tree?

this is another rare game w/ unique & positively stunning graphics. if there were but more of them!

concept, also, is fabulous. it's got a few pesty quirks, however, ie: it's primarily only about movement but, most of all:

if you get to level 8 & you do not do the peculiar steps in their exact order--very easy to get wrong--you just wind up stuck & you either quit right there to, perhaps, never return or you start the whole thing over either then or on another day.

maybe.

too bad for that, too, cos this game is miles & miles beyond almost all of the others in terms of design & atmosphere. a beautiful thing.
