MikeSuper Crazy Guitar Maniac Deluxe 4The era of the "Guitar Hero" inspired music game is surely waning. But as we look back on the glory days of fake plastic instrument peripherals and the family and friends that played them, let us not regard it as a mere fad. Instead, let us allow Second Impact, the developers of Super Crazy Guitar Maniac Deluxe 4, latest in the series of browser-based music games, to remind us why we all played these games, and how fun it is to rock out at home, even if we don't have the chops to make it on tour.

Like other entrants in the series, Super Crazy Guitar Maniac Deluxe 4 (I may never tire of typing that) is all about re-imagining the Guitar Hero experience for your home PC, so if you are unfamiliar with these sorts of games, you should take a look at the helpful in-game tutorial. Use the [1234] keys (or [ASDF], if you select that preference in the Options menu) to play long notes with your left hand, and the [arrow] keys for shorter attacks in your right. Play the keys indicated by the passing icons to successfully rock out; flub your timing or accuracy and experience the ignominy of lameness.

The controls sometimes seem a bit loose or clumsy, but are generally responsive and suitable for mimicking the Guitar Hero controller on your keyboard. The set list lets you thrash to a broad, if obscure, variety of fine head-banging tracks, from classic-sounding metal to ska to "boss-fight" guitar noodling. Super Crazy Guitar Maniac Deluxe 4 improves over its predecessors with amusing presentation and a host of new options and features. You can play every song in two difficulty levels, garner achievements for epic thrashing or embarrassing failure, and battle egregious enemy bosses like the diabolical Puppet or the innocent Pizza Guy through the shear power of Rock. Or you can just put on your headphones and sneak a quick jam in a break in your day. Either way, let Super Crazy Guitar Maniac Deluxe 4 let you remember how much fun rock music games can be.

Here's a few things I've found that nobody's mentioned yet.

How to get more guitars:

As mentioned above, you get one by peeling back the paper near the whale on the title screen.

Every boss has a guitar that you earn the first time you defeat it.

You also get a new guitar when you complete all the achievements in a row of the achievements screen.

Finding secret songs:

When you complete the top row of achievements, you will be given a new guitar. Select this, and you'll immediately be thrown into a new song. Same goes for the guitar unlocked through the second achievement row.
My favourite song in the game is the second secret!

Boss #4:

On the song select screen, there will be a purple line dancing around one of the songs. Select and complete this song and return to the song select screen. When you do this, an energy ball will appear in the lower-right. (Going to the main menu makes this disappear thogh) The boss will challenge you if you select the swirly song while you have two energy balls.

It keeps not registering my key presses and it gets jumpy on occasion. For a rhythm game, that is a serious problem.

[Try Chrome if you're not already using that browser. I've found that Chrome works better for games that require precise timing. -Jay]

Reply

As much as the potential for fun in these games are, sometime in the middle of the song the key timings don't match the rhythm of the instrument your following. Often i begin to follow the rhythm to then notice that i'm a bit too early on every press.

That or either it's following one instrument and then suddenly switches to another.

Lot's of potential but just unnerving that it simply isn't as accurate as necessary. (and I use chrome, so it shouldn't be a browser issue)

Reply

Playing in chrome and sometimes have the same problem.

Especially with the "quick" songs (for example ska hymn), where you have to press the same key in quick succession it sometimes doesn't register correctly. That is a bit of a shame because I'm quite enjoying this one!

well i must say its still a great game even if my screen problem never gets resolved. i loved "fairest one of all"

Another achievement is crack of dawn:

play at 6 am

Reply

I love the fact that the key setup the game uses allows you to actually take the keyboard and hold it like a guitar. :P

Also, I didn't experience any desync at all. I use Firefox and the songs keep to the beat rather nicely.

I can't fight boss #4. I've fought bosses 1,2,3,AND 5, but boss 4 won't challenge me. I can see the purple swirl appear on certain songs, but when I go there, the song just plays normally... Is this a bug, or is there something I have to do first?

Reply

thanks Jay!!!!! I'll try!!! Wow, this is sad: I'm already having to force myself not to. Thanks again for your reply! : )

You're welcome, and thank you, too. :)

@moopie12

You have to play the purple-swirled songs,(don't take to long choosing, I once took too long and got nothing)Every time you finish one, a dark orb will appear on the bottom-right corner. Once you get 3, play another purple-swirled one, and you will fight the boss. After that, you can choose the boss to fight on other songs like the others.

Reply

Moopie12 boss 4

If you play a song with the purple swirl it is a normal song but after you played it (at least a bronze award) you will see a purple round thing in the right corner above the word PRO. Play 3 songs with the purple swirl till you have a row of 3 purple cirkels and then play I just wanna burn. Then the boss apears

To fight the 4th boss

When on the song select screen, play the songs that have the purple swirls on them. When you beat one, a small purple orb will appear in the lower-right corner of the song select screen. Get a few more and you should be able to fight him.

You know that boss you can only get on Pro Mode, the sixth boss?

The God of Time

Well, I had to face off against him on a super hard song so I quit. Big mistake. Now I can't find him again. Does anyone know how to make him reappear? I figure it has something to do with time since, well, you know...

Reply

@Echoloco, just keep playing the purple swirled songs on Pro. It HAS to be on Pro, because he is fought in the sky. You'll just have to get lucky to get him on an easier song on the 4th purple swirl.

I have a question too. I'm missing the 6th guitar in the bottom row. I've beaten and overkilled all the bosses on both difficulties except the last one on Pro. I also know it is NOT one of the Guitars from the achievement rows. Any ideas?

Reply

@Lloyd That guitar is for beating boss #5 on pro.
By the way, does anyone know how do you trigger the #6 boss fight? I don't see any swirls at all.
I triggered the boss before after beating boss #4 and boss#5 on the Solid-g song, but I failed on the former, and I didn't play the latter, trying on a different song. It didn't work.

Reply

Does anyone have any tips on how to beat the pirate boss on pro mode? He only seems to take damage on x3 or x4 multiplier, and pro mode goes up to x10. Is purposefully missing notes to go back to the lower multipliers the only way?

Reply

am i the only one who confused how to get the third boss (pirate) ?
i had to meet him once, but i quit that song and never find him again

Reply

@Volt
If you fight that boss on a song where there are several two-at-a-time notes, just play only one of them when you are around x3 or x4. Works well for me.

Reply

@Baili
Thanks a lot.
Finally defeated him on my second try.

Does anyone else have the problem that the game just won't save your achievements and everything? I'm using Firefox. What am I doing wrong? :(

Jay: I just tried to. Couldn't even click on "settings" :D

[Try updating your Flash Player, or use Chrome. I just tried in Chrome and Settings was selectable. I tried in Firefox (older version of Flash Player) and could not select Settings. -Jay]

About the God of Time

You need to wait exactly 9 seconds after going into the song select menu to select a song. To support that, the "No" button to fight the boss is instead "9".

WELL i found a glich XD
i was playing i want to burn on pro mode
and it show me as the godly figure when i had poor!! it fixed it self at the end of the song but lol

Reply

@Taco

By wait 9 seconds, do you mean between opening the song select menu to pressing 'play this song', or between clicking on a song to pressing 'play this song'?

I've been trying to find him for a good while now. I swear, finding him is the hardest part of beating him :-/

Reply

I read what Taco said about waiting 9 seconds before clicking a song, but I've tried that several times already and no boss fight.

Also, after the first encounter, I gathered the purple orbs that were mentioned for fighting bosses, and instead I ended up fighting the Dark Guitar Maniac. After beating him, the purple swirls completely stopped showing up.

Is anyone else having a problem with pressing 3 arrow keys at the same time? I'm using Chrome, and when I press 3 arrow keys at once none of them register with the game as being pressed. 2 at a time work, but just not 3. This is insanely obnoxious because of the last 4 notes in "Fairest one of All," which I are all the prevent from getting a Perfect on that song. Until now, I just thought I was hitting them wrong, but I'm certain now that when any 3 keys are pressed at once, none of them register. Any thoughts?

Reply

Follow up: same thing happens with Firefox as well....:(. The hell is this?

Reply

About the God of Time:

What Taco said is correct. Wait exactly 9 seconds after pressing "play" and then click the song you want.

Question about the "Analysis Paralysis" achievement: Exactly how long is "a while"? And does that mean time with the song list open or what?

Reply

Nov: yeah, it's the song select window. Just get there, and don't press anything for a while. I don't know how long exactly, but it's probably something like a few minutes. If you just let it sit there, you'll get it.

How to Summon the God of Time?

Try overkilling a boss in PRO. Go to "Song Selection" and select a song. The God of Time sould appear.

Reply

The bosses:
Normal Bosses and their powers:
Pizza Guy: No Powers
Puppet: Block your watch of the notes
Pirate God: Makes all note grey and only appears on the x3 and x4 multiplayer
Brothers: Mix the order of the notes, makes the form of the notes dissapears, and at the end of the song, both powers at the same time
Special bosses, their powers and how to find it:
Dark Guitar Maniac: Play the songs with a purple thing around the name, 4 times, at the 4 time, the Darj Guitar Maniac challenge you... He have lots of itself running in your notes, some of them have notes too, they drop them to the air before they reach the line to confuse you... (It's always appear on I just wanna burn)
God Of Time: I not sure about this... I never beat it... People says than appears if you wait 9 seconds before the song select menu, but i tried and not work... Sometimes, he appear when you overkill a boss (That happen to me) but even if you know this, you never can know in which song it's gonna appear... When you fight whit he, you have to be very carefull, because he only appear when you're at x10, and when you do, he make you think than the notes are going faster, but THEIR NOT... They have more distance between them and go faster, but it's the same... If you can find him and keep on x10, you can beat he

I found something interesting when getting the Premature Articulation achievement. I was able to get in about 150 notes on Presumed Dead, but I got the achievement later with only about 100 notes on Fairest One of All. I think premature Articulation is gotten by amassing a certain number of notes in multiple songs.
