Weekday Escape

GrinnypAlthough many room escape aficionados prefer long, complicated escapes, sometimes there's enjoyment to be found in brevity, especially if it's done correctly. Dghgbakufu is one designer who knows how to do short and sweet well, and they are here with Chikarou 3, a quick and yet fun little dungeon escape that is perfect for the mid-week break.

Chikarou3The rules are simple, wander around the area and solve a few problems to make it to the outside, none of the usual dungeon escaping methods like digging or tunneling required. It should be noted that Chikarou 3 is definitely not the game for the colorblind, since practically every puzzle in this brief adventure is color-based. And this is indeed a very short game, with basically three main puzzles to solve to escape the rather light and airy concrete structure that you are trapped in. What we're looking at is room escaping stripped to its very essence: small area, no music, very small inventory (room for 3 items), and a single point of escape.

Chikarou 3 (chikarou means dungeon) is a short yet memorable and logical little escape game, a perfect 5 minute and out exercise in escaping. Come and enjoy Monte Cristoing your way out of this amusing little dungeon, hopefully with no need for a long, protracted plan of vengeance once you've made it.

Chikarou 3 Walkthrough

Exploration (always clicking right arrow)
Screen 1

In the centre, it looks as if a ladder could be there, but it is missing. To the left of the ladder, there is a box containing roman numerals - I (yellow), V (mauve), X (cyan). To the right there is a box, which appears to need a key.

Screen 2

In the centre, there is a bookcase with red, green, blue and black books. To the left of the bookcase there is a box, which is fastened by screws. To the right there is a box with a glass panel; behind the panel, there is a key.

Screen 3

There are four boxes containing books that are the same colour as the roman numerals on screen 1.
In the far right box, behind the book, there is a piece of paper. Pick it up.

Screen 4

There are two boxes. On the left there is a list of roman numerals and thier corresponding numbers. To the right there is a box that needs a four-digit code.

The Puzzles
The four-digit code

The four-digit code is obtained from the four boxes with the coloured books.

Each book corresponds to one of the coloured roman numerals on screen one. The far left alcove has one mauve book, which corresponds to V, the centre left alcove has one mauve book followed by two yellow books, which corresponds to VII, etc

Look at the conversion chart on screen 4 to calculate the number corresponding to the roman numerals.

5794

Enter four-digit code into box on screen 4. Open door, find a screwdrive and pick it up.

The three-button puzzle

Use the screwdriver on the box on Screen 2 to the left of the bookcase. There are three black buttons. Click on them and notice that they change colour, red, green then blue.

The objective is to change the three buttons to blue using the sequence on the bookshelf.

Look closely at the bookshelf to calculate the sequence.

right, left, right, centre, left, centre, right, centre, left.

Once you have entered the correct sequence, ou will hear a noise of something opening. Come out of closeup and zoom in on right box; the glass has now gone. Pick up the key.

The final puzzle

Use the key to open the box on Screen 1. You will find a 4x4 grid. Look at the piece of paper you picked up earlier from behind the book on Screen 3.

Enter the sequences in the only order they will go. Once you have done this, you will hear a noise. Back up and notice there is now a ladder ready to climb. Climb it and you are out.

Too short. And almost easy.

Reply

I don't know about 5 minutes... it was more like 90 seconds! :-D

Still, i enjoyed it. The puzzles, while few, were well though out. Quality is definitely better than quantity in escape games, at least in my opinion.

Reply

Much too easy. We want harder escape games.

Reply

I don't necessarily want "harder" escape games, though that's fine, but I certainly want longer games.

Reply

Roman numerals were easy, but for some reason, I'm stumped with the piece of paper and 3x3 bookshelves????
Gotta be staring me in the face but i just can't get it.....grrrrrr

Reply

Well, let's see...

First puzzle - 4 digit code

The answer comes from the books and the Roman numeral code.

Translate each colored book into the corresponding Roman numeral (order is important).

When successful, you gain the all-important screwdriver.

Second puzzle - RGB code

Use the screwdriver on the panel left of the bookcase

The answer comes from the bookcase

Write down the book colors. Arrange in order from black to blue

Input the colors one click at a time

When successful, you gain a key

Third puzzle - 4x4 grid

Use the key on the panel by the stairs

You need the paper from one of the book cubbyholes

Each group of colors on the sheet fits on the grid

Some buttons will remain gray

When successful, you are CLEAR to leave.

Having trouble. Feeling very inadequate.

I figured out the Roman numeral puzzle, but now I can't get the second one. I can't seem to figure out how to combine the bookcase with the paper clue.

Can anyone help?

The paper clue is for the last puzzle (after you use the key)

Reply

Disappointingly short, I've waited all week for this!!! Still, nicely done.

Nerdy:

How many colours are there on the bookcase

Thanks, donhuando! I'm out now.

Reply

I must admit that I don't get the second puzzle at all.

There are 9 rooms of 3 books each, how am I supposed to know which room to use?

Reply

Okay, NOW I get it.

The idea is that each of the 9 shelves shows a stage in your clicking. Starting with 3 Blacks you can only change one colourb at a time, so it's just like a word puzzle. You must order the shelves correctly on a piece of paper, and then use that order to click your way through the safe.

Reply

Very middling

Reply

Branefart on the bookcase, otherwise an ace...

Reply

I am embarrassingly still stuck on the bookshelf. Escape games are not my strong suit...but I always try. Maybe one more hint?

Reply

Brainfart here also on the second puzzle. Someone hinted to order the colors from Black to Blue.

The colors on the 3 color selection box:
Black, Red, Green, Blue

So I think the order of the shelves is:

6 5 2
4 1 8
7 3 9

Starting point is in the middle with colors:
Black Black Red (1)
Red Black Red (2)
Red Black Green (3)
and so on...

I think?

Reply

But I give up. Because even if I had the shelf / color sequence correct....

I can't figure out how to enter in each sequence after each other. Clicking on the reset button after each sequence does not work.

Stopping before I get too frustrated with wasting time on this game.

4red3s, you are SO close.

You should only be pushing one button at a time, changing the buttons from black to blue.

The first button you push is the right-hand one. The second one is the left-hand one. And so on.

Reply

4red3s,

The order of the shelf cubes is a progression - one click at a time you go from

black black red to blue blue blue

.

Cool game, but yeah way too short.

Reply

I really enjoy these games, I'm glad you link to them. Although, I confess, this one took me more than five minutes.

I also was stuck for a while trying to match the paper up with the bookshelf.

Reply

could someone post a snapshot or solution to the

final color puzzle at the end? i don't seem to be doing it right.

Here is a schematic of the final color puzzle:

Whenever I open a SPOILER I demand to be SPOILED, not just tortured further with yet another enigma, making me feel much stupider than I already is. Still can't figure the bookcase.

Guess I'll have to wait for the walkthrough. I can't solve the 4 digit puzzle. There are two walls with bookshelves. I assume the one with only three colors is combined with the roman numerals, multiplying gives me 4151 but that didn't work. Where am I going wrong in my process. Dang!

bankroller,

First Puzzle Solution

You're almost there! Your first clue is in the box to the left of the ladder with the three Roman numerals. Note that I (1) is yellow, V (5) is purple and X (10) is blue.

If you turn to face the opposite wall, you'll see that there are 4 wall shelves, one box for each number on the combination lock. Inside each of the four boxes are yellow, purple, and blue books.

The books are positioned inside each shelf to read like a Roman numeral. So if you had a blue book and a purple book in a shelf, that would be XV or 15.

Using that logic the solution from left to right is:

Purple(V) = 5
Purple(V) + Yellow(I) + Yellow(I) = 7
Yellow(I) + Blue(X) = 9
Yellow(I) + Purple(V) = 4

Combination: 5-7-9-4

Paul,

Third Puzzle Solution

You have to click the buttons to arrange the colors in a way that includes all of the patterns from the piece of paper.

The easiest way to solve it is to begin with the straight lines first and the square patterns second. Start by making a diagonal line of red circles from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner.

From that point, add the rest of the patterns and complete the board to look like this: Solution.
