Order Up!! To Go

AlexIf you're anything like the rest of us, your idea of "cooking" probably involves dumping whatever leftovers you have from the take-out you ordered last night onto a plate, nuking it in the microwave until it's no longer refrigerator-temperature, and then drowning it all in an entire bottle of hot sauce. Sometimes, you'll even use a plate that isn't made of paper if you're feeling particularly fancy or, you know, your mom is coming to visit. But never fear; even if we are less than classically trained chefs in our everyday lives, it doesn't mean we can't rule the virtual world of cuisine and experience the exciting, fast-paced realm of restaurant management with no risk of burning our eyebrows off or poisoning loved ones! In Order Up!! To Go, the popular Wii time management and cooking sim has been adapted by Chillingo for use on your iOS device, and the result is so addictively good, it must contain MSG.

Order Up!! To GoYou start out as every aspiring chef does; flipping burgers at the local fast food joint. This plate functions as a tutorial of sorts to show off the basic controls of the game and can also be returned to at any point later as a means to pocket some extra cash. Start by pulling down on an order note to see the list of steps required to prepare a particular meal and select which ingredient you'd like to tackle with a tap of a finger. You can slap a frozen burger on a grill, watch it cook to perfection, and once the first side is done, flip to the other with a flick. While that's sizzling, you can also drop some French fries into the fryer, prepare the veggie toppings, or fill up four different drinks at the same time at the soda fountain. Multitasking is key; scroll between work stations by dragging your finger across the bottom of the screen while keeping an eye on the gradients that appear next to each of them. Customers not only pay for how quickly their food arrives and how hot it is when it gets to them, but also for the quality of the food. Don't expect a big tip if, say, their bacon is underdone or their fries are burned. And heaven help you should you slice their tomatoes unevenly! If you feel any portion of a meal isn't up to snuff, you can tap on the trash can in the upper right of the screen to dump it and try again. Aiming for a perfect score on every step may take a bit longer, but the extra coinage and the warm feeling of accomplishment make it all worth it.

Order Up!! To GoOnce you've mastered the basics and feel you're ready to tackle the tough world of restaurant management, you can buy your own greasy diner (complete with a sassy big haired gum-snapping waitress). Click the board outside of your restaurant to plan your menu according to each entrée's popularity, ordering enough of each to make it through the day but not too many that it becomes unprofitable and wasteful. It becomes difficult to predict what will be ordered the most on a given day and if you run out of an item someone really wants, they'll order the cheapest thing they can. If you find yourself with coin to spare, you can also unlock extra entrées, specials and spices from this menu to lure even more customers. Certain customers pay extra for the right spices and have a strong dislike for others; it's up to you to learn who likes what and ensure you have it in stock to achieve maximum profit!

At the end of each day, you'll also be able to view your restaurant's "Yarp" rating, which tracks you on several stats ranging from cleanliness to menu planning to efficiency. Let your establishment go a few days without hiring a cleaning service from the newspaper and you may get a visit from the health inspector (or some equally unwelcome guests of the vermin variety). Generate enough buzz around your restaurant and a food critic may visit to give you a bump in patronage with a rave review (provided you serve them food worth raving about). Upgrading your kitchen from the newspaper is a good, albeit pricey, way to increase your "Yarp" rating as well.

Order Up!! also offers an assortment of achievements to strive for, such as serving four perfect meals to one table or successfully dousing a kitchen fire. Each achievement grants a valuable golden coin, and therefore are not only fun to go after but become almost necessary as you'll need a lot of coins should you hope to unlock every entrée, spice, and restaurant. The more you unlock, the more costly items become.

Order Up!! To GoAnalysis: Order Up!! To Go is a superb example of what casual gaming on the iPhone should be. The controls are nearly flawless, reacting accurately to every touch and featuring a wide variety of motions as you quickly slice onions, grate cheese, flip omelets, or carve deli meats. It's also incredibly addictive; once you know the basics, there's an easy pick-up-and-play style that will compel you to sneak a few days' work in between classes, during lunch breaks, before bed, whenever.

There are quite a few ads to contend with since the app is free, but they can be removed completely by upgrading via a tiny in-app purchase. You also have the option to speed up play by purchasing gold coins in order to quickly unlock meals and new restaurants and avoid grinding your way to the top. When played without this extra boost, the game can feel a little repetitive after extended play and it can take a very long time to be able to purchase another restaurant or complete an entire menu board.

The stylized cartoon graphics are a treat, though, as is the surprisingly enjoyable and well-done voice acting. The game also features a unique brand of humor, from the memorable special customers in exercise clothing requesting gravy on their pancakes because it "looks healthy" to the actual restaurant names. Burger Face, anyone?

Order Up!! To Go Tips and Tricks

General Tips:

  • There are no penalties for throwing out food, so don't hesitate to chuck something if you feel like you can do it over in a hurry.

  • You can leave "prep work" items such as dredged fish or leafed lettuce on the station in "done!" status indefinitely without losing "perfect" status. You can't use the station for anything else while it's there, but you can leave it as a lower priority over things like grilled or cooked items, which need to be grabbed as soon as they are perfect.

  • A dish only starts to cool when all components are completed. So don't hesitate to hold back on a last item on each order so that all the orders are completed around the same time. In particular take advantage of the aforementioned ability to leave an item in the food prep station.

  • When adding spice to a dish, you only need to add spice to one component, and it can be any component. You do not get extra money for spicing more than one component in a dish.

  • You can only get a "perfect" if all the components of a dish are perfect, so if you've already got one component of a dish at "good" or below, don't bother trying to make the other components any better than "good".

Special Customers:

  • Sea Captain (Salty Sam): salty

  • Guy in pink shirt (Sweet Tooth): sweet

  • Cowboy (Tex Porterhouse): BBQ sauce

  • Fat man in jogging outfit (Jimbo Jambo): gravy

  • Man with can on his head: (Hootenanny Pete): aromatic

Burger Face Tips:

This is the beginning area and fairly self-explanatory. Because there are no upfront costs, it's best to grind here a bit in order to make enough money to unlock the more profitable dishes in Gravy Chug, rather than going to Gravy Chug right away.

Gravy Chug Tips:

  • You don't need to flip an omelet--as long as the cooking time goes to "perfect" you can still get perfect. This also applies to stirring chili and possibly other things (updated as I find out).

  • You must flip onions at least once to avoid burning them, but otherwise flipping doesn't affect the score.

If you can find this for the Wii, buy it. I picked it up out of a bargain bin years ago and it's still the most fun I've ever had for five bucks, and still makes some of the best use of Wii motion controls ever.

The drive-in looks new from the Wii version, so it's nice that they added some things. Now we just need a sequel.

The game is not a perfect example of casual gaming on the iPhone. I agree with your assessment of the game when you say that it's fun and the controls are perfect. However, it's a huuuuge grind to unlock new menu items and buy new restaurants. It's almost unacceptable how stupidly long it takes to get new restaurants... unless you pony up your money and buy in-game currency. Which is a big no-no in video games. You shouldn't design a game that is almost impossible to complete without buying in-game currency. It's a crock.

Just wondering if you can tell me how to purchase onions for the onion burger? Also, do I need a restaurant higher up than the Chug?
Thanks

How do you clean the kitchen and restaurant tables?

Hi, can you tell me how do you know that things in oven are done? Normally for other items there is a meter which shows temp or perfect but for oven I can't figure it out. Thanks

Ive spent virtually the whole day playing this after downloading it for a 4 year old!

With the specials...how do you know what spice to add? I have several unlocked specials but have no idea what spice to add and I don't think it tells you either. So I end up having to experiment till I figure it out but some of them I just can't!

How do I know the names of the customers? Sometimes in the tips there it be mentioned that certain customers would want their foods with certain spices, or that it should be vegify, etc.

i'm stuck on the Italian spices that go into the specials, they require two to three spices, but I've tried various combos and i can't get any of them to work. anyone have the answer?

I can't seem to get past the point of baking the french onion soup. No matter how long I wait, no matter how many times I hit the icon with the completed meal, it won't register. It's really starting to get annoying seeing as this prevents me from experiencing the rest of the game.

Can someone please tell me how to get a perfect score when slicing vegetables. I'm trying really hard but the knife slices sometimes without me moving and slices on its own or "double" slices real fast. Is there a secret or trick? I know you're supposed to slice when the two lines come together on the veggie but this seems to also be askew. Any help appreciated. Makes it almost impossible to get a perfect score on a table of four.

I agree with Pon de replay: the gameplay and production value are great, but the gaming experience itself is frustrating (frustration obviously directed to make you cash out)

Unlike Alex, I stopped having fun after my 100th burger and Mac & cheese, having to play thru 4 or 5 game days to buy one recipe, etc

I would be so happy to spend 4 or 5$ upfront for this game with a healthy progression curve ( and no in-game purchases...)

@LC

In order to get Crispin Brown to fry (or do anything, really), you have to touch one of the orders so that the various options appear, touch Crispin in the bottom right corner so that his box becomes highlighted, *then* choose one of the options on the menu. It took me a while to figure this out as well since the directions were a bit hard to understand.

Order up to go is 215 MB, but this is a newly bought iphone, with 4.8 GB Still available to use.

It says App size 20.7, documents and data 194MB

Re: Yarp score for menu planning
I have been trying to get a perfect Yarp score for the gravy chug by pretty much doubling the amount of dishes for the amount of customers. I have a score of 10 for everything else now but just cannot get menu planning. There is simply no way of predicting or forecasting ... Just now I had 8 customers ask for the roast chicken and 1 for the house special (I had ordered 6 of each). The smiley faces don't seem to have a bearing on the popularity of the dish at all????

I hired Larry Cheezler as an assistant. There are no indications as to how many specials I'm suppose to be purchasing on my menu page. The text also remains white when I do purchase the specials.
Please advise as how Larry indicates the amount of specials to buy and what's the best way for him to help in the kitchen.

Thank you.

Hiya all, been playing order up on my iPad for weeks now and I'm addicted. Just wondering when the fortified chef is downloadable and the mini games on the phone. Also I don't understand why I'm not getting my tarp score up, I clean my restaurants everyday, I don't run out of dishes, if I use an assistant chef does that penalise my yarp. But it says I'm down on daily coins, but it doesn't tell me how many daily coins I'm supposed to be getting, it's frustrating as I'm on 99 for all my yarps but the daily coins are letting me down, but if I don't spend as much then il be down on my efficiency it's doing my head in lol.
Can someone explain this to me

tapping on Nugget before he throws his newspaper will cause him to fall. You then get a chance to "catch" the papers and earn coins.

Reply

Regard Dusty Keister, not sure if this was answered already...

the Firing Beef some people were talking about, there's no spice to add...this got me perplexed in the beginning too. the trick is to cook the food until it gets really close to burning it. keep an eye on the status of the cooked food... example, when you start cooking the food the status will start like this as you're cooking his meal..."Poor", "OK", "Good", "Perfect", "Good", then "Perfect" at this point you should plate the item. This is the only character so far that i've seen where the status of the food becomes perfect when you're close to burning it. hope this helps.

In the Italian restaurant, how do you add the correct spices to the special- Italian Wedding Soup. From what I can tell, it wants onion and basil, but it will only let me add one at a time. When I click on the spice icon to add the other, it tells me that it already has spice.

Drih,

Open the food recipe but don't touch the food you want to fry. Then tap the fry guy, Crispin, (he will get a little bigger) and tap the food. He will then fry the food for you.

Hi, many helpful tips and information here but I just came across something I've not seen before. So, I just started my first day in the Italian restaurant (the one directly after El Fuego) and on one of the order slips I have a special requirement in the form of a steak. It's identical to Dusty Keister's flaming steal icon only there's no flames.

Customer looks like a vampire/dracula and I'm thinking this guy wants raw/undercooked food (as an opposite to Dusty) but am not sure. Would be most grateful if anyone could shed some light here.

Thank you,
Laura :-)

Did they change it so you have to buy Crispin? Is it a glitch? Should I have never gone to Burger Face? D:

Here's a little "undiscovered" money trick for all you guys!
MONEY TRICK!

At the start of each game when the Yarp! thing goes up at Gravy Chug (coz I still don't know if there's a newsboy in other restaurants since I'm still at Gravy Chug), close it immediately! (Just before you hear the bicycle ring) Make sure you still make it just when nugget is riding his bicycle before delivering your paper. While he is in the middle of the screen riding his bicycle, tap on him once and the screen will take you to where nugget takes a nosedive and drops his newspapers. A pop up will appear saying "nugget took a nosedive..save his job..blah blah" Now, all you need to do is tap on the flying newspapers that the vehicles throw out there windows as fast as you can within 60seconds (I think) and at the end of that, TADA! Extra money you can spend. 1 newspaper=1 silver coin. The highest I got was 119 coins in 60seconds. If you could do better than that, good for you! And oh, you can do this every time the day starts.

I hope this helped! :) And please tell me if it also works on other restaurants. Haven't unlocked them yet. :)
