joyeBack to the Cubeture: Era 2If you played Edible Castle's last Cuboy point-and-click adventure game, back in 2009, you may be wondering why it's taken them so long to release Back to the Cubeture: Era 2. Apparently, someone didn't send the developer the memo that sequels are supposed to be derivative and rushed out as soon as possible to grab the flaky eyeballs of Flash gaming fans before they wander off to some new thing. Instead, not only does Cubeture 2 feature the same excellent voice-acting, cheeky humor, and quirky art as its predecessor, but it's five times as long and offers a much more non-linear experience. If you haven't played the earlier game, the opening cutscene neatly summarizes it, so you won't be lost. In short: Cuboy ultimate friend good. Esquire Padrino nefarious cat bad. Suspiciously cardboard box-like time warper causing temporal chaos. Got it clear? Good. This time you'll be rollicking through Cubathens, a sort of boxy Roman/Greek mish-mash.

You'll use your mouse to play most of the game. If your cursor changes to a volume symbol, you can chat up the daft peasant, Olympian god, nasty little ginger girl or whoever it is. A downward claw icon means you can pick up an object and add it to your inventory. A gear icon is an indication that either the object itself can be used in someway, or you can use something from your inventory on it. Arrows at edges and doors can be clicked on to move between rooms. Your inventory screen (in the top right corner) allows you to change outfits, check on your quests, and combine (by dragging) or use (by double clicking) objects.

Back to the Cubeture: Era 1Back to the Cubeture: Era 2

While the last game relied a little too heavily on your spacebar for its mini-games, Cubeture 2 features seven unique minigames, all of which can be played on their own from the main menu as well. Most of these are keyboard controlled, and range from a head-stomping gladiator platform battle, to jump-and-duck reflex tests, to... deity armpit hair munching. Look, saving the world isn't pretty, alright?

Back to the Cubeture Era 2 screen 2Analysis: If the idea of deity armpit hair munching makes you purse your lips and shake your head about kids today, and you are not one bit amused, no sir, then Cuboy isn't going to be your thing. At the same time, however, the game is not a dull crass-fest resorting to sex and body function humor to cover up a lack of wit. Rather, the game has an infectiously cheerful enthusiasm for the ridiculous.

The game also gets everything right from a game play perspective. The interface is ridiculously user-friendly, and the in-game tutorial shows you clearly how to use all of it. Skippable cut-scenes (well, except for one hilarious counterexample), easy muting, a quest list that provides gentle hints, no pixel hunting: the game thought of all the pet peeves of point-and-click fans and forestalled them. This is just pure (if occasionally hairy) silly fun, so box yourself into your seat and enjoy it.

Back to the Cubeture: Era 2 Mini-Games Tips

Oh Ship!

  • Despite the instructions only mentioning arrow keys, you can use [WASD] as well, which will be easier to do while also controlling the mouse for most right-handed people.

  • The AI is fairly stupid, so your main concern should be keeping yourself in ammo so you can take him down faster.

  • Watch out for other ammo besides tridents. The dynamite in particular is great: you only get one shot of it, but if it hits, it not only hits him for a large amount of damage, but it sends him up into the air, giving you an opportunity to grab boxes.

Gladiator Stompinator

  • This game takes a fairly broad view of what constitutes jumping on someone's head. You can jump into someone's feet and take yourself out that way if you're not careful.

  • You'll need to win three times in the arena. The number of enemies increases, but it is never really that difficult.

  • An amusing thing to do in the mini-games menu is set all the fighters to CPU-controlled and then watch them duke it out.

Fly High Mountain Guy!

  • Don't worry at all about getting hit by the small objects. You can't really avoid them, and you have so much health that they don't really impact you at all.

  • The large objects are where you want to be careful. Remember that they are quite wide and when you see the flashing warning arrow, give that area a wide berth. However, you can be hit several times and still make it to the top.

  • The "falling" mini-game is just a joke. You can't win or lose, so just enjoy it.

Cuboy Cupid

This is a simple matching game, and the timer is rather generous. Just start spearing people and match their faces.

Poseidon's Pipeline

Up arrow to jump over objects, and down arrow to duck from seagulls. Timing is everything. You have to wait until the very last moment in order to succeed. The timing is tighter on the seagulls than on the floating objects, so if you don't succeed at first, try again, because the enemy pattern is random.

Atlas's Armpit

Simple if you know how it works. You have to click everytime to chew; you can't drag yourself over a couple of blocks. You must completely get rid of all the stubble. If you start to chew on the wrong square, Atlas will yell instead of giggling.

Battle Fort Battle

This is essentially the same as Gladiator Stompinator, only with a capture the flag component. You have infinite lives, so the only thing that dying does is send you back to your own side. Kill the other team therefore only when it will either allow you to capture their flag more easily, or will prevent them from getting your flag. Don't forget to go back to the flag once you kill someone who's carrying it, because once you (or another team member) touches it, it'll it automatically go back to your base. (The same applies to the other side, but your teammates are so hopeless that it's doubtful that anyone but you will ever get the flag.)

Cuboy: Back to the Cubeture: Era 2 Walkthrough

Escaping the sheep

  1. Head east and speak to the boy. Ask him about his sheep, and he'll tell you they scare easily. Ask him for a glass of water, then while his back is turned go into his house to steal the knife, straw, and rope. Wait for him to give you the water then go back to the sheep field.

  2. Talk to the sheep and they'll run away from you. scare them until they run into the tree twice, knocking the branch to the ground. Pick the branch up, then use the rope on it (drag the rope over to it in the inventory screen.) Wearing you new hat, speak to the ram and it'll run away, allowing you to leave.

Stealing the evil plans

  1. On the world map, pick up the torn flyer (at the top near the mountain,) and head to the town to the south.

  2. In the town, follow the peasant to the theatre and listen to the speech. Once it's finished, follow the thief east and talk to him. Threaten to tell on him, and he'll steal your boss back for you.

  3. Find the thief (to the west of the town entrance,) and ask him about breaking into the palace. He'll mention a master trickster who lives in the woods. Ask him to make you a into the best thief in a five-mile radius and he'll also give you the ninja costume.

  4. Go west to the docks, and talk to the man in the stripy shirt. He'll challenge you to a sea battle.

  5. Once you've won the mini-game, pick up his toothpick and the can of paint next to him. Head north and give the toothpick to the weapons merchant - he'll give you an axe in exchange.

  6. Leave the town and head to the forest. Use the axe on the tree, then pick up the axe handle and wood, and also the odd fish mushrooms to the right of the screen.

  7. Go north, and give the axe handle to the woodcutter - he'll carve it into a wooden sword for you. Speak to him again, and ask him about trickery. He'll agree to help and ask for some items.

  8. Give him the knife, straw, wood, and paint and he'll build the trojan babe for you.

  9. Go back to the city and find the soldier in the green uniform who wanders about. Wait for a moment and he'll whistle a six-note tune - try to remember it.

  10. Go to the palace (just north of the city entrance.) Use the trojan babe on the guards, then head north into the palace.

  11. There are six statues here - each plays a musical note when you use them. Use them to play the tune the soldier was whistling and the door will open. Put on the ninja outfit (hat, shirt, and pants,) then enter.

  12. Sneak past the guards, then grab the evil plans. You'll be temporarily banned from the city.

Becoming a hero

  1. Head to the mountain, and pick up the other half of the flyer. Combine them in your inventory, then head back to the forest.

  2. Head east, and you'll see a stack of wood. Rotate each section until the front looks like a crudely drawn picture of a woman and it'll become a wood nymph. If you've put the flyer back together, Hercusneeze will appear. Ask him to train you and he'll give you the gladiator's mark.

  3. Head to the coliseum, and talk to the old man until he goes inside. follow him, pick up the armored pants, and then ask him about the mark of the gladiator. Tell him you have it, and he'll give you the gladiator's outfit. Put it on, then talk to him again to start the gladiator mini-game.

  4. You have to win three rounds of this - once you've done so, you'll be hailed as a hero and allowed back into the town.

  5. First though, go to the cave at the right hand corner of the world map and talk to Cerberus. Ask to enter Hades, and Cerberus will tell you that you need to look like a corpse and have a permission slip from Zeus.

Meeting the gods

First off - the permission slip:

  1. In the town, find the young boy and ask him to give you his action figure - As long as you're wearing the gladiator outfit he'll gladly do so. Give the action figure to the woman who sells rare items and she'll give you Perseus' helmet. Give the armored pants to the weapon seller and he'll give you a magic stone.

  2. Go to the forest, then head north from the room with Hercusneeze. Use the stone on the pond, and the ginger girl will be impressed. Give her the stone and she'll give you her inhaler. Leave the room then re-enter, and you'll find that she's managed to kill herself with the stone. Push her in the pond and grab your stone back.

  3. Head back to town and give the inhaler and the bloody stone to the weapon seller - he'll give you a spear and a pair of garden shears.

  4. Go to the mountain and climb it. You'll have to beat the flying mini-game.

  5. Once you're at the top, talk to Zeus and he'll ask you to solve his gods' problems. Ask him how to find them and he'll give you the coordinates to find Poseidon and open the route to find Atlas. Go east and talk to Aphrodite. Offer to be her cupid, and play the Cupid mini-game. Once you've won she'll give you her autograph.

  6. Go back to the world map and click the newly-appeared arrow in the bottom corner to meet Atlas. Talk to him, and you'll start his armpit-shaving mini-game. Once you've beaten this he'll give you a coin.

  7. Go to the town and talk to the captain in the docks. Tell him the coordinates Zeus gave you and you'll meet Poseidon. Talk to Poseidon and beat his surfing mini-game.

  8. Climb back up to Olympus and tell Zeus you've cheered up all his gods. He'll give you permission to enter Hades.

Entering Hades

Now you just need a corpse costume:

  1. Back at the town, go to the north end of the market, and speak to the fish merchant. Ask him about bathing, then use the fish mushrooms on him. Eventually he'll give you some fish bones. Go to the theatre to the north of the town and give Aphrodite's autograph to the actor - he'll let you take his makeup box. Finally, go back to the northern end of the market and talk to the tailor. Ask him to make you a corpse outfit, then give him the make-up and fish bones.

  2. Hooray! There's just one more thing you need - leave the town for good, and head to the coliseum. Use the shears on the gold leaf bush, then combine the gold leaf and coin in your inventory to make a gold coin.

  3. Go to the cave at the top-right of the world map and talk to Cerberus. Cerberus will let you enter if you look like a corpse and have permission. Wear the corpse outfit and talk to him again.

  4. Enter Hades and give the gold coin to the ferryman. After you've crossed the river, go east into Hades' playroom.

  5. Talk to Hades to start the final mini-game. Beat this, then talk to Hades to end the game.

Back to the Cubeture: Era 2 Easter Eggs and Secrets

Outfits:

This does not include the outfits you get automatically through the main plot of the game.

  • Satyr outfit:

After training with Herc, talk to the wood nymph and choose the options which flatter her (there are several possible paths; one is "lovely tree lady", "everything", and "enchanting presence"). If you get through the conversation successfully, she'll bless you with this outfit. Try again if you don't get it right.

  • Toga outfit:

Go to the bathhouse (west and south from the city entrance) and talk to the bather. Choose the options "Lara Croft" "night" and "stop this poem". He'll give you his clothes.

Other Easter Eggs and Secrets:

  • After beating the final mini-game, go back out to the entrance. Cerberus will sing two new songs for you.

  • You can "use" your glass of water on any tile to make a puddle. If you leave the room and come back it'll be gone. If you want to refill the glass you'll have to go back to the peasant. (The glass of water isn't used for anything in-game.)

  • Most characters have an idle animation and/or comment that they make if you hang out in a room. Some have more than one.

Please share any other easter eggs or secrets you have found in the comments! This is a work in progress.

Bug? I'm playing on a mac and I can't use the keyboard to steer our little hero - not even in, for example, the ship game where you are instructed to use arrow keys (or aswd) to steer the ship. Since you can't quit the mini game either, I'm currently stuck in a position where the antagonist is out of reach and I'm just bobbing around...

Hi guys! Thanks for the nice comments.

Vederblich: I'm not sure why this has happened to you, first time we've had this feedback. Does it happen if you try again? You should be able to quit the minigame by pressing escape twice.

Adam: try looking around the city for some visual hints related to the statues.

Granderouge: Remember to check your reminders! Who in the city is obsessed with fish? And remember to say everything you can to every character!

Mm: Do you have something that's almost a sword? Maybe it needs a craftsman's touch.

@Adam I had this problem for a while, it's not that clear, but eventually I got there:

Fun, in that unique Cubeboy way! Does anyone know what the giraffe in Hades' chamber might do? It's got an interaction gear, but I don't have anything that interacts with it. Inquiring Cubeboys want to know!

This game is really impressive. Adequately risque I guess, except for the times when I think it goes overboard, such as when Cubeboy...

dumps the bloodied body of the dead asthmatic stone-skipper girl in the pond and kills the lava river boatman

but I have to say the gameplay and the dialogue made this game very enjoyable. Not to mention the really fun mini games, which are relevant to the story and not too challenging that I'd want to stop playing.

Overall one of the best games I've played on jayisgames :). Maybe I'll play the first one if I have time to spare.

Anyone else having trouble with the game not recognizing the arrow keys? I can press one once during the minigames, but then nothing happens after that. Space isn't recognized either, and neither are WASD.

Using Firefox 9.0.1 on a Mac with the latest Flash version (or the latest one available for Mac). I've clicked on the Flash window to make sure it's selected as well, so that's not why it's not recognizing.

[I've had this happen with some games that are built for Flash Player 11+, but that are run in Flash Player 10.3 (which is the latest version available for my Mac running OS 10.5.8). Check "about:plugins" in Firefox to see the version of Flash Player that you have installed. If it's 10.3, then use Chrome for games that give you problems like this. Chrome has its own Flash Player built it, and the latest Chrome will give you Flash Player 11.1. -Jay]

I seem to have reached an empass.

UPDATE: it appears I could just walk right out of the room. Apparently, I wasn't clicking the right spot. Once I got out, I just wandered the town until I got to the entrance, at which point, I was run out again. Not a game breaker then, but a bug no less.

In Hades' room, there is a scribble on the wall which says "Type OUTFIT". Do so, and you'll get a weird squished outfit. Sorry, I can't remember what it's called.

@Shudog
If you still need help with the tailor, did you

make the fish guy take a bath, talk to the three-headed dog about getting into Hell, and get the permission slip to enter Hell from Zeus? If you did that, you should be given the option for the outfit you need from the tailor. (I'm not sure if you need to do the third thing I mentioned before having the option with the tailor, but the third part gives you an item that you can use to trade for an item the tailor requests.)

I hope this is about the same outfit.

The outfit to make you look dead. I did not try getting any other outfits from the tailor.

Shoot. I just realized you've made it past the tailor with that last comment of yours :P Boo. I missed the writing on the wall but I'm not about to play the game all over again.

I have an issue with the Fish Merchant in that he wont give me an option to talk about the bath. I didnt actually talk to the soldier with the green outfit so i never discussed the rare item lady's relationship with the fish merchant. Does anyone know how to fix this?

This is a little easter egg

If you talk to the boy who gave you water while wearing the Ram God costume, you knock him out

Reply

@Joye

1. You do not actually have to beat the last minigame to get Cerberus singing the songs about how ultimate cuboy is and about cuboy and boss. I believe they'll sing those songs for you as soon as you have entered hell once :)
2. Get the Ram God outfit by combining the ram horns and the wool hide the ram drops ^^
3. By typing 'outfits' in Hades' room, you'll get lots and lots of new outfits. With these outfits you can look like any character in the game, like the developers and like lots of other things which makes no sense, like an upside-down cuboy. All of these new outfits are just called 'outfit' :D

Reply

Thanks Jay, that was exactly what the problem was. And with a relatively painless solution, too!

Reply

I like the game, but I stopped halfway through and it didn't save my game and I don't like it well enough to go through it all again. Oh well.

Reply

@Finn I did two of the three. (Thanks for looking into it!) My problem

was that Zeus, sorry Z-Daddy, already said he had to look like a corpse. Why should I traipse all the way back to the Hades-mouth to hear it again?

Also Jay et al, if they fixed the G-Unit bug, that file might need refreshing.

I got options to finish the Mt Olympus section without completing Aphrodite's quest.

I think what would be walkthrough helpful would be a list of things the Weapons Seller accepts. The current walkthroughs don't mention them, and they're required.

Reply

Found a secret outfit that was not listed here!

When you are in the Hades playroom, there is a giraffe in the corner. Next to the giraffe there is a message on the wall: "type 'outfits.'" Do as it says and you will get an outfit added to your inventory ... simply named "Outfit." It's just a bizarre looking Cuboy with a tiny head and a huge body.

Reply

Whoops, I am mistaken:

The secret outfit is actually a Baby Cuboy outfit, complete with pacifier. This explains the aforementioned unusual proportions!

Reply

Another easter egg I found. If you talk to the Glad-I-Joe boy after getting the Glad-I-Joe (while not wearing the gladiator outfit) Cuboy says "Another adoring fan." as a reference to Oblivion when, after becoming the Arena champion, a boy follows you around named 'Adoring Fan'.

Reply

Wow, another one. After stealing the stuff from the water guy the first time, spill the water on the floor and have him refill your glass. While he is doing that, go into his house again. You will recieve an outfit named INVERTED, basically inverted colours of the original Cuboy outfit.

Reply

Very strange. There must be something fundamental I'm missing, because I can't get past the first two rooms, even with the walkthrough. I can get the sheep to run to the tree, oh yes, but after too many minutes of trying I have yet to see them affect the tree.

Reply

I think I'm stuck with the woodworker.

I got the Trojan Babe before I asked about tricks. Now the woodworker doesn't present any conversation starters, he just repeats his text from when he gave me the Trojan Babe. Oh, I've already gotten him to sharpen the handle into a sword, too. Is there any way to get unstuck?

I love this game so much. I can't count how many times I laughed at the ridiculous jokes XD Good job Edible Castle, I hope you continue the series!

Also about costumes:

When you finish the game, if you go back, you will have unlocked every character in the game. However, some of them turn out weird if it's not in the normal head-body-legs pattern as Cuboy. I was wondering if someone could fix that?

It's kinda weird to try and dress up as say, the ram at the beginning of the game but since it only has a "body" and "legs", the game defaults the "head" as Cuboy's! I think that perhaps you should make it possible to select nothing for each section, like the "hat" if you're going to do that. Or for those characters, make them only accessible through the "full outfit" option.

There is another Secret Outfit that can be found.

Inverted Outfit: At any time, return to the starting point of the game. After already asking the boy for water and stealing the knife, rope, and hay, ask him to get you another glass. Then, click inside of his house. You should notice an outfit has been added to your inventory.

Doh! Didn't notice someone had already posted the outfit! On another note though, there is something I was wondering..

In Hades' Playroom at the end of the game, there is a Giraffe doll which can be interacted with, however, nothing in my inventory seemed to have any effect. Has anyone found a way to do so?

There is ONE outfit NONE of you listed at the beginning of the game.

Have the guy refill your glass of water at the beginning of the game, and when he does steal from him again. You'll now have the inverted outfit. This can be done anytime.

I found the last mini game in hades didn't work - I was able to fetch the flag once and place it, but subsequently, it never 'took' no matter how many times I returned it. Too bad, the game overall was quite charming.

I ticked off the nymph. :( I guess there's nothing to do to make her happy again?

The Palace Entry Statue Puzzle

To enter the palace, you need to click each of the six statues once in a certain order. While the green guard does whistle the tune that corresponds to the tones each of the statues make when clicked, a slightly easier clue is on the wall in the bath-house (between two red arrows).

Satyr outfit

As Joye has already posted, if you're nice to the Nymph, she'll give you a satyr outfit.
For fans of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, it's Mr Tumnus! :)

@Susan

It won't "take" the flag of your opponent if your own flag isn't in the home position. If someone is carrying your flag, you need to get it back before you can steal Hades'.

I am having the same problem as Merge on the very first screen. I've scared the sheep dozens of times so they run into the tree, but the branch never drops. Very frustrating because I would really like to play this game.

I've been checking edible castle's webpage for information about a Back to the Cubeture part 2 every few months. It was released without me knowing. I was so excited for this game and it definitively was worth the wait.

Bug to report: I finished Poseidon then Atlas's quests then as I was going back to ask Aphrodite what I needed again, I jokingly told Zeus I helped all of them... and he gave me the pass.

To be able to scare the sheep, talk to the son of the sheepherder about killing the ram.

Okay so let me know if this happened to you to

I typed the word outfits when i was in hades room because it said to on the wall. But then i got every single outfit you could possible get in the game, including all the characters in the game, example: for a head i could have the boat with cuboy and the sailor in it for a body i could have a sheep. and for feet i could have pegs. all at once.

@Blinky, yah, I noted that exact same thing in a comment I made several posts up. :( It's sad.

@aroseandwent

I had that problem too, and then I realized I never said "Greetings!" to the tailor because I thought it'd be useless -_-

After I greeted and talked to the tailor again, then I was able to ask the fish merchant about the bath thing.

No one have noticed an easter egg:

The musical statues on the right from the biggest to the smallest play the Healing song from Legends of Zelda: Majora Mask

Reply

No one have noticed that:

The statues order also appears on the entrance of the palace

Edgy! Everything in this game falls into place X-D . Awesome graphics, music, voice acting, story... Cuboy is your ultimate troll game star! There are so many good things here that it would take too long to list them all.

I'll just point out a couple of minor flaws:

1) The musical puzzle is terribly designed for non-musicians: six different pitches is too much, the intervals are pretty small, short whistles are not the best pitch reference (besides the second note is whistled too sharp and is difficult to distinguish from the first.) Fortunately there are three other cues to solve it (that I have spotted, maybe there are even more.)

2) Multiple saves would have been great, since there are alternate scenes you can't go back to.

Am I the only one having trouble with the pirate battle mini-game? I think it might just be because I'm playing with a laptop touch pad instead of a computer mouse, but just in case I'm doing something wrong, PLEASE HELP!

Another outfit:

When you talk to the sea captain, he tells you his name. If you answer "No you're not. I am!" (Or something like that), you get a sea captain outfit.

There is a MAJOR easter egg in Hades playroom that gives you all outfits to the game: click if you dare :)

next to the giraffe is some writing simply saying TYPE: outfits. If you do that you get outfits of every person you have met plus some bonus ones :)Enjoy

I found the game challenging but fun It was funny at points but I do agree

bringing the ginger girl back from the dead to be one of hades playmate

was overboard/creepy
