SonicLoversoniclover_tanookytracks_screenshot2.gifOne thing you don't want in your house is an infestation of tanookys. Tanookys are devious little creatures, mischievous spirits that like to hide in objects similar to their characters. Alfa and Max, the two inhabitants of the house in which BenRadish Games' Tanooky Tracks takes place, happen to have a dozen of the little pests hiding in and around their four-story house, and are counting on you, you crafty tanooky exterminator you, to track them down.

Tanooky Tracks is more or less a point-and-click adventure game with a pinch of hidden object seasoning and a surreal twist. Pick up or manipulate objects by clicking on them; a changing cursor alerts you of when you can do so. Click the top and bottom edges of the screen to explore all four levels of the slightly unusual house in search of useful items and clues. Solve the riddles in the hint book to find out what to use where; find and lure out all twelve tanookys and the game is won!

Analysis: When I first got my hands on this game, I knew I'd enjoy it. I have something of a fascination with puzzley puzzler-puzzling puzzles, and Tanooky Tracks definitely fits into that category. The clues are smartly written and make perfect sense without giving too much away, and there are even some additional hints at the very end of the book in case you're REALLY stumped.

The atmosphere of the game is a rather interesting dash of surreal that somehow complements things perfectly. The tanookys themselves look as though they were designed by Eyezmaze or Amanita Design, and the house's architecture, while mostly sensible (seriously, where are the stairs?!), somehow helps add to the surrealism, as does the slightly whimsical music.

If I had to pick one thing about Tanooky Tracks that seriously needed improving, I would... well, I'd have to get pretty desperate to find one. Just about everything in the game is good. If BenRadish intends to create a sequel and it turns out to be more of the same, I wouldn't see anything wrong with that. But for now, let's just go and help Alfa and Max with their...

...Uh-oh. Don't look now, but I think the object just to the left of you right now might be concealing a tanooky. Got a plan for bringing it out of hiding? I'd suggest applying the last thing you handled before using your computer.

This game was a lot of fun. The only problem I had was with

finding all of the coins. There was too much of a hunt and peck for them.

Other than that, it was a great brain teaser.

I accidentally gave it a 1-star rating while trying to go up to the next level. :(

This was a fun way to spend a few minutes. I certainly wouldn't have given it a 1 on purpose!

Cute and fun. Covering up the clues once they were found was a bit annoying, but that's a nitpick as I wanted to see if my guesses matched with the actual solution.

Might as well note that "tanuki" is the romanization of the Japanese mythological animal. Also a common name for actual animal.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had the problem kingjulien86 did. I actually had to resort to the walkthrough for that...

I was going to use the in-game help, but since it told you the number of coins per level, if you couldn't remember how many coins you collected where, it didn't do you any good.

But other than that, it was really cute, and the puzzles actually make sense, which is always a relief in this sort of thing.

Maybe SonicLover forgot to mention the beautiful illustration! I'm playing this one again just to look at it some more. Also, given the clues, I spent a while trying to put three

monsters in a closet.

@ruufy:

Given the clues, that's hilarious!

This game was lovely! Not too hard, didn't take too much time, and had great graphics and not-very-irritating music :D

Although I had to refresh the game after completing it the first time around, simply to look at the clues again. And it was worth the reloading of the page, because after I solved everything (a couple by randomly clicking), and looked at the clues again, I realised that the clues are actually very detailed/subtle!

ruufy,
that's not bad with the monsters - I, on the other hand, was desperately trying to find

a bath tub

Could anyone explain to me why the solution to find Grilos is what it is? I mean the

order of the colors

For the life of me I cannot see the logic. I even looked at the in-game help but that didn't help me at all. Brute force gave me the solution, but I guess there was some logic I failed to recongnize...

Other that that - and that Polstobos dude - it was nice and not too hard. Those two beat me, but hey.

@bio

red hates green, blue loves red, blue doesn't like columns 2, 3, 4. Blue must be first. Red and blue get a long so they go together. That's columns 1 and 2. Red and green don't get along, so green must be column 4. Orange is the only color left so it's column 3.

Reply

bio,

I had trouble with Grilos initally because I thought I was trying to make him UNhappy (like, say, Spegulatina or Bekolder), rather than happy. Once I realized I wanted him happy (like Puerta or Dallus), it got easier. The hint essentially says "Grilos wants the face to be happy. Red shouldn't be next to green. Blue should be next to red. Blue doesn't like being in the second, third or fourth spaces. Grilos wants there to be all four colours." So, blue in the first spot only, red next to it, orange in third ('cause green can't be next to red), and green in the fourth space.

This was such a good little game. A few other users have mentioned that finding the coins was a pain, but I enjoyed it as it was the last thing I did and helped draw the time played out another few minutes.

I liked this game a lot. Great graphics and interesting puzzles that didn't make me want to pull my hair out!

Absolutely fantastic game. Brilliant illustrations, logical puzzles that made me laugh when I got them.

KingJulian and Muttroid,
thx for the answers!

Seems I completely misunderstood the hints there. i thought "likes" and "hates" refers to

the guy liking/hating those colors, not the colors themselves

:D
