Weekday Escape

GrinnypLast week's escape game was rather complicated, wasn't it? With all of those puzzles and weird viewing angles. Well, Weekday Escape is supposed to be a mid-week break, something to refresh rather than frustrate, so what we need to do is find a palate cleanser. Something simple, yet exceptionally well designed. Something that features absolutely no pixel hunting. An escape that is so well-designed, in fact, that it has a built in hint system. Wow, if only Robamimi had a new game out... Oh, hey! They do! Japanese designer Robamimi is at it again. Yes, once again for your room escaping pleasure Robamimi has created another (the fifth) in the Who Am I? series of room escapes, 18 Who Am I? Why 18? That is something that will actually only make sense once you make it out of the room.

18 Who Am I?The Who Am I? series of room escapes are a fun combination of classic room escaping conventions such as use of found objects and puzzle solving combined with a classic word riddle. In each of the games you must find five "hint" cards which give clues to the central riddle, which is the one word that will finally unlock what you need to escape the space. And this time around it is an exceedingly small space. No closets, no trap doors, no extra rooms like the last one, R20 Who Am I? Instead, this is pure four wall one room escaping goodness. Thankfully Robamimi is quite good at packing a lot of puzzle oomph into such a confined little area.

One of the reasons we like featuring (and playing) Robamimi escapes is the consistent top-notch designs which they put out. Even such a simple game as 18 Who Am I? has all of the bells and whistles that you'd want in a larger room escape game. Fun and challenging puzzles, beautiful graphics, interesting points of interest, intuitive navigation and inventory control, non-intrusive music, an English version, a mute button (for when the music finally becomes intrusive), a save button, even a built-in hint system. That's a lot of detail to pack into such a diminutive package, and it makes for a fantastic overall experience.

If there are any complaints at all about 18 Who Am I? (other than the fact that it feels way too short) is that Robamimi leans more heavily than usual on the color puzzles. Although some attempt has been made to add text to make it easier to distinguish the colors, there are just such a variety of the puzzles that this amusing little effort is less accessible than usual to those with colorblindness issues.

The Who Am I? series of puzzles are Robamimi "light", leaning more on the central wordplay than the complexity of the other individual puzzles. Not that this is a bad thing. Robamimi light is still a heck of a good time, a lot of well designed and well executed escaping gameplay wrapped up in a fun 10 minutes or so, the perfect mid-week break. So relax and enjoy the soothing rhythms of a mellow jazz soundtrack as you ponder the universal question, Who Am I? Or, at least, the 18 Who Am I? version of that eternal question.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

Here's a walkthrough!

We'll start with the first puzzle box, on the left. It's got four buttons, and apparently wants you to arrange a few colors.

If you go right two screens, you find a book on a table. It's got hints for each puzzle. Page 1/4 has a funny equation. weird arrow - white = blank grid. What's the weird arrow?

Back out all the way and you'll see an umbrella on the chair to the right. It's got five colors, one being white. Minus white leaves us with the code for puzzle box #1.

Go back to the first screen and put Yel Or Br Blu into the first puzzle box. You'll get a clue card and a blue star from inside.

Back out and look at box #2. It's a 3x3 grid looking for some sort of combination. Go back to the book on the table (right two screens) and see what it's got to say.

Page 2 shows a black smear with a white grid on it. Is it dirty?

Back out and go left one screen to look at the counter. Underneath, there's a dishrag. Grab it.

Go left again to the table with the book. There's coffee spilled everywhere, so use your dishrag on it. I sorta expected that to reveal something, but no dice! No one wants a dirty rag.

Go back left to the counter, and zoom in on the faucet. Turn the water on and use the rag on it to rinse it out. FIND CODE! Rinring? WTH?

Zoom out and then zoom in on the box on the right side of the counter. There's a spinner with the letters R, I, N, and G. There's also a little button on the right. Push the button when the needle is above the correct letters, "rinring," and the box will open. Get the screwdriver and the clue card.

Back out and go back to the first screen. There's a panel to the left with the picture of a screwdriver. Not much thought here... Use it on the top of the panel to open it and find a light switch. Flip the switch.

Back out and go back to the table with the book. Four squares on the grid (zoom in on the top of the table) will have numbers on them, which will be the password for the second box.

Zoom out and go back to the first screen. Turn the lights back on and look at the second puzzle box. Click the numbered squares in the right order and then the black switch on the bottom to open the box. Get the hint card and an orange star.

Back out and look at the third puzzle box. It has three triangles that can spin around and point in five directions each. So, back out and look at the poster. On it, there's a pentagon, and at each point is a color. We'll come back to this.

Go back to the table with the book, and look at the shelf on the wall. There are three boxes, each with three macarons of different colors. It might help to take a screenshot of this. You have to compare it to the poster on the wall.

Go back to the poster, and remember the colors of the macarons in the first box. Blue, Orange, and Yellow. Finding these three colors on the poster makes a triangle that points up. If you do the same with the other two boxes, you get the code for the 3rd box.

Back out and look at the 3rd box. Enter the code Up, Up-right, Down-right. Get the hint card and the yellow star.

You should have all three stars now, but we still don't know the order we need to get the pig out. There are only 6 possibilities, so you can probably just brute-force it.

Go back to the clue book, and flip to the 4th page. There's an arrow pointing to what might be a door.

Back out and go right one screen. Doors! Click on the bottom of the right door, and you should see a star with the boy B.O.Y. That's the order of the stars.

Go back to the first screen, zoom in on the pig, and put the starts in the right order (blue, orange, yellow). Click the glass, and get the pig.

Go to the right, and zoom in on the scale. Put the pig on it, and the indicator arrows will move.

Zoom in on the arrows, and each has it's own color, and points at a specific number. There are also three colored dots which tell you the order of the numbers.
Here's a walkthrough!

Zoom out all the way, and look at the safe. use the three numbers (751) from the scale as your code and open the door.

You should find the last clue card, and a box asking for the final answer from the clue cards. So, what is he?

Golf, of course. WIN!

The Left (4 Button) Box

  • You should now be facing the low table with the pig, the shelf, and the boxes.

  • You have all of the clues you need to open this box.

  • Think back to page 1/4 of the book and the colorful striped umbrella leaning against the chair.

    • The book indicates the 5 striped umbrella minus white would match the four buttons.

    • The buttons need to be clicked so that they match the colors of the umbrella (except the white).

    • From top to bottom: yellow, orange, brown, and blue.

    • For the colorblind: Click the top button four times, the next button once, the next button twice, and the bottom button three times.

  • Take the hint card (Hint 1) and the blue star that is underneath.

  • Back up.

The Middle (3 x 3) Box and the Record Player

  • We know the middle box has a 3 x 3 grid.

  • We've seen a 3 x 3 grid on the table with the book, but it is covered with spilled coffee.

  • Turn right twice to face the table and chairs.

  • Click on the table for a close up.

  • Luckily we have something in our inventory that can clean that spill up.

  • Use the dishcloth on the coffee spill.

  • Well, we can now see the 3 x 3 grid, but there's nothing in it!

  • And, ugh, the dishcloth is now nasty with coffee.

  • Let's clean the dishcloth, shall we?

  • Back up from the table and turn left.

  • Click on the sink for a close up.

  • Turn on the water and use the now dirty dishcloth on the water.

  • Hey, a clue! The letters RINRING can now be seen on the dishcloth.

  • Where have we seen those letters before?

  • Close down the dishcloth into your inventory and back up.

  • Click on the box on the right side of the counter for a close up, then click on the lid to open it.

  • Yup, the letters on the record that is spinning round and round are R, N, I, and G.

    • What you need to do is push the button with the note symbol on it when the needle (at the top of the record player) is in the section of the letters in the dishcloth clue.

    • Push the button when the needle is on each letter, R-I-N-R-I-N-G, in order.

  • If you push the button correctly, a slot will open at the bottom of the record player.

  • Take the screwdriver and the hint card (Hint 2).

  • Back up.

  • Turn left.

  • Click on the panel on the wall to the left of the table for a close up.

  • Use the screwdriver on the top of the panel to pop it off.

  • Hmmm, looks like a light switch.

  • Remember the clue from the book, the 3 x 3 grid surrounded by darkness?

  • Let's see what happens when we turn out the lights.

  • Click on the switch to turn the lights off.

  • Back up and turn right twice to face the table and chairs.

  • Hmmm, you can see that the 3 x 3 grid is glowing. Click on the table for a close up.

  • You should now be able to see numbers in the 3 x 3 grid. There is a 1 in the upper left corner, a 3 in the lower left corner, a 4 in the middle, and a 2 in the lower right corner.

  • Back up and turn left twice.

  • Click on the wall plate for a close up and click on the switch to turn the lights back on.

  • Back up.

  • We now have what we need to open the middle box (the one with the 3 x 3 grid buttons).

  • Click on the middle box for a close up.

    • Click the buttons in the order suggested by the grid on the table.

    • Click the upper left corner, then the lower right corner, then the lower left corner, then the middle button.

  • Once you've pressed the correct buttons hit the black bar at the bottom of the box.

  • Take the hint card (Hint 4) and the orange star.

  • Back up.

The Right (Pentagon Button) Box

  • Now it's time to tackle the right box, the one with the pentagon shaped buttons.

  • Remember the picture on the wall of a pentagon surrounding a macaron (cookie)?

  • Remember the three plates of colored cookies we saw on the shelf over the table and chairs?

  • Remember that the pentagon in the picture has colors at all five points?

    • You will use the colored macarons on the plates to draw a triangle inside the pentagon with the colored points.

    • These triangles will look like the triangles on the pentagon buttons on the box, with one point looking like an arrow.

    • The first (left) plate has a blue, orange, and yellow macaron.

    • Trace that pattern on the pentagon picture and you get a triangle with the point going up to the top of the pentagon.

    • The middle plate has a green, blue, and pink macaron.

    • Trace that pattern on the pentagon and you get a triangle with the point going to the upper right of the pentagon.

    • The right plate has a yellow, green, and orange macaron.

    • This creates a triangle with its point pointing to the lower right point of the pentagon.

    • Click on the right box for a close up.

    • The first button already has the triangle pointing up, so you don't need to click it.

    • The middle button needs to be clicked once to point the triangle to the upper right point.

    • The right button needs to be clicked twice to point the triangle to the lower right point.

  • Once you have the buttons in the correct order, click the black bar at the bottom of the box.

  • Take the hint card (Hint 3) and the yellow star.

  • Back up.

The Pig

  • Click on the pig under glass sitting on the low table.

  • Note that there are slots for three stars in the base. You should by now have found all three of the colored stars.

  • The only question is, which order do they go into the base?

  • Was there a clue in the room somewhere?

    • The clue is on the door, when you clicked the handle for a close up.

    • There was a word, b.o.y., and a picture of a star.

    • The letters actually stand for colors, blue, orange, and yellow.

    • So the stars go into the base, from left to right, blue, orange, and yellow.

    • For the colorblind: If you use the "view" section of the inventory to look at each star in close up it will tell you its color, so you can tell which is the blue, which is the orange, and which is the yellow.

  • Once you solve the puzzle of the base click on the glass to remove it.

  • Take the pig and back up.

  • Turn right.

  • The clue in the book seemed to indicate that we should weigh the pig.

  • Click on the scale on the middle of the counter for a close up.

  • Place the pig on the scale and notice that there are now three colored hands on the face of the scale.

  • Click on the face of the scale for a close up.

  • There is a blue hand pointing to the 1, a black hand pointing to the 5, and a red hand pointing to the 7.

  • Also notice the three dots, from left to right, red, black, and blue.

  • Back up twice.

  • Click on the safe below the counter for a close up, then click on the key code panel for a close up.

  • The combination from the safe is from weighing the pig.

    • Use the numbers from each hand, in the order of the dots on the scale face. 1 is blue, 5 is black, and 7 is red, and the dots are in the order of red, black, and blue.

    • Therefore the code is 751.

  • Enter the code into the keypad and press the E (enter) button (the lower right button).

  • Take the hint card (Hint 5) and the small box from the safe.

  • Back up and turn left twice to face the doors.

Who Am I?

  • By now you should have all five hint cards.

  • Hint 1: You are the sport to use a ball.

  • Hint 2: The players don't throw or kick a ball.

  • Hint 3: The player who kept lowest points is the winner.

  • Hint 4: When players felt a danger, they must shout.

  • Hint 5: There is a car of the same name as you.

  • Can you guess the word?

    • The answer is: golf.

  • Pull up the box from your inventory.

  • Click in the black space to place a cursor, then type in the answer to Who Am I?

  • Click the "enter" button and the box will open. Take the revealed object.

  • Now click on that suspended plate on the right of the door.

  • Place your newly acquired object on the plate and enjoy your escape.

Wow, first in a long time w/no hints, so this one is pretty easy.

I sort of cheated though.

I brute forced the stars/pig and the pentagons... Rawr.

Always happy to see a new Robamimi escape, especially when it's just tricky enough to the point that I can just make it without a walkthrough.

Cool! I only needed a few hints out of the walkthrough to complete this...

FORE!

I got the right code for the pig for the wrong reason (had to look for walkthrough to remember there was a clue).

I just put them in the order of the box below and that was the right combo on the first try.

Indeed quite short, could make it all again after I had flash crashed 1-2 puzzle away from the end in a couple of minutes...

Yay! Lovely relaxing room escape... no ridiculous pixel hunting and puzzles that are not too taxing for my tired brain. My only complaint is that the designer seems to want you get out without any frustration and puts hints everywhere just in case you can't work things out by yourself. Then again... I probably like that.

it doesn't seem to load. I've tried updating all my flash players and stuff, but still doesn't work. what might i be doing wrong?

Same happened to me. At the very, very bottom of the (empty) page it says "altermative site", click on it - for me that worked, hope it does for you!

Am I the only one for whom the font in these games (ie., nearly all Japanese escapes) is backwards? Does anyone know how to fix it? I'm using firefox, but it's also backwards in Safari. The game is still playable, but it's so annoying!
Ta!

That was fun, but I figured out the "who am I" aspect of it from the very first clue I found.

@Devron
Just wait on it!
I had the same problem but it is just too slow on the id and file checks.

What a cute little game to start the morning!

Pretty easy, didn't even need a walkthrough :3

Short, sweet and simple. Experienced escapees shouldn't need the clues in the black notebook; with that information I was out in under ten (maybe even five) minutes. That said, the game is just so gosh darned cute that I don't feel cheated.

Great little game! Loved it!
I managed to solve all the hints and was stuck on the last "Who am I" puzzle. Maby 'couse I'm not native english speaker and the japanese translation was a bit... exotic...
The hints were a bit vague and I tried

dodge(ball) and polo, becouse of the "car of the same name" hint,

but only afther reading here the comment-pun from tenzhi I realised the solution. :-) So, thanks for a hint!

Made it through all the way without walkthrough help - rather unusual for me! But I couldn't figure out the riddle until I read mr1black's post, and went back up to read Tenzhi's ;-) So thank you, both!

So yes, a little easier than some other escape games, but I'm certainly not complaining - it was a very fun diversion.

Fun enough! Pentagons bugged me a bit, but that's all.

I know that this is an old game, but I just came across it and found that the link doesn't work. Try http://robamimi.biz/games/wantYou/wantYou.php
