ChiktionaryInterlockedGot those Monday morning blues? Well here's a nice little cure; a fresh and unique 3D puzzle from We Create Stuff. Looking very familiar, Interlocked is like those wooden block puzzles that challenge you to put them back together, only this time you get to pull them apart. Much more fun!

The controls are simple; use your mouse to rotate each block and examine it from all angles. Press the [spacebar] to engage the hand tool then click and drag with your mouse to move pieces and pull them out. Hit the spacebar again to return to examination mode. The difficulty curve ramps up nicely, beginning with some easy blocks to whet your appetite that are quickly followed by some tough puzzles to solve.

Also available for mobile devices! Check out our Interlocked (mobile) review and walkthrough.

Interlocked's gameplay is sublimely smooth with beautifully rendered 3D graphics, and surprisingly this has all been achieved on a flash platform. With 14 levels followed by 6 Hardcore puzzles, Interlocked is simple to play but highly challenging, and you may find yourself tugging at pieces in the vain hope that they'll move just one millimeter more.

So forget it's Monday for a while and engage the gray matter with some engrossing puzzles. What better way to kick off another week?

Takes a lot of fiddling around for a disconnected piece to decide to disappear. Annoying.

Reply

Would have been a really nice game, but I've found some trouble with moving or removing the pieces around.
Some pieces are stuck by others even if they're out. I even made those pieces far out of the puzzle, but they wouldn't disappear yet.
I had to struggle to turn the camera so I could push them even farther so they would disappear and it would magically set other pieces free (it wasn't holding them long before already).

There was even one simple puzzle I've been stuck because I couldn't move one of the piece even if there was nothing to prevent moving it.
I had to start it again, do teh same thing and it worked.

While testing a bit more I've found that pieces put faraway would disappear while getting them back into place...

If it wasn't for those problems, it would have got one more star for me.

Puzzles are fun and challenging but a few flaws make it more of a chore and less fun than it could easily be.

Delay while it 'zooms' in between grab and rotate mode.

Need to line things up precisely on certain levels with controls that move in varying jumps.

Reply

In real life I hate these kind of puzzles, but this was really fun. I suppose the soothing music didn't hurt :}

Reply

I ran into some clipping problems where I appeared to pull a piece through another, but the other pieces acted like the one was still there, just invisible.

This was great fun to play, but i found it irritating to use the space bar. It would be nice to have used the mouse buttons to "drag and release". Or just some options to choose either. (to click the icon to switch just isn't practical on the later levels.)

Reply

#14 is hurting my poor brain. I can slide one piece (the lighter... taupe?) and that's it, unless I'm missing something. I'm having a harder time with these than I do IRL because it's so much harder here to see what's going on in the middle of the pieces.

Didn't have problems with the spacebar switch or a delay in "zoom" though. Some finicky line-ups, and the directions of the axes aren't consistent/clear enough for my tastes, but overall good puzzles well done.

Back to 14...

Heh, re-read my comment - "unless I'm missing something". Of COURSE I'm missing something, else the level'd be moving along ;)

Maybe it's my machine, but boy, did I get bugs:

On the first three or four puzzles (all I could stomach), I got clipping errors. On all of them after the first. That is, it somehow allowed a block to move inside another block, freezing everything. Reset.

Then, it would often never decide to make my freed blocks disappear. I had two as far apart as they could possibly get onscreen (it wouldn't let me move them further away), and still nothing I could do would make them disappear. Reset.

That, with the very odd control system made this a nice effort, but overall, a pass.

Reply

I would love to play all the levels but the delay with the spacebar and dragging is annoying, I gave up after the 5th puzzle.

Reply

Once they clear up the technical issues, this could really be worth expanding and porting to the NintendoDS. (It doesn't have to have the whole fancy 3D stuff they're coming out with, but a version specifically for that can't hurt.)

Reply

Urgh. Breezed on until I hit 14, then hell closed down on me.

What's the trick I'm ignoring?

Reply

I may play this when the bugs are fixed. Pulling a free piece one, two, three screen lengths away, trying to get a vantage point to pull it further when the camera is pointing at the big empty space in between, and finding that when I pull it laterally instead, it collides with something invisible... does not give me confidence that the game knows something I don't when I try to move a piece and it doesn't come out. Sometimes there's a hidden obstruction, but sometimes there definitely isn't.

Agree with most of above: very good game, very hard to pull out pieces at times.

4 stars from me.

#9 is officially killing me :)

Reply

Well, I tried it too, and got no bugs at the Armor Games site, either. Go figure.

That said, it's not so bad at all now that it works.

Reply

@bioLarzen, on 9,

Once you get the little white cube out, see if you can get the big yellow piece to slide to the side, away from the teal piece. It'll move on an axis perpendicular to the teal piece. From there, things just slide off and away.

Oh, twinter, thanx!

The power of posting worked though, I solved it right after posting what i did :)

Right now I'm at level #14.

But thanx for the hint!

I followed argyblarg's advice and tried the game out at ArmorGames instead of the port through JIG (which i usually try to use to increase their ad revenue).

It took me 10 minutes to get very painfully to level 9. That time was cut in half on AG.com, and not because they were puzzles i'd already solved.

If AG.com could figure out a better way to let people host this game without all the bugs, that's be excellent. Otherwise, it's not worth playing except at their site.

Anyone knows if the game auto-saves my progress or do i have to start from the beginning the next time I load the game?

I am working to figure out the difference in embedding technology that I'm using here at JIG versus what they're using at Armor Games. I have hosted hundreds of games without issue. If only I could reproduce the issue, I'd be able to test it.

What OS, browser, and Flash Player versions are you using?

If someone who was experiencing issues with it would like to contact me, someone who could run some tests for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Send an email to our contact address found in the site footer. Thank you!

I'm still stuck on 14, too. Anyone else make it that far?

I haven't experienced any bugs so far. I'm on level #13 and have been playing for about 4 hours - not continuaously, but the game's been open for the entire time.

There must be something with level #14... I was through the first 13 levels in about a minute each - and I've been unable to remove any pieces for about an hour now... The first 13 puzzles doesn't indicate #14 should be that hard...

Either that or there's something basic I failed to notice, of course :D

There is way too much lag here. Every time I try to turn the puzzle, I somehow click on one of the ads on either side of the game.

(Haha, checked some other gamin forums and sites and EVERYWHERE ppl are complaining about level #14 - so at least we know it's not only us :D)

Good challenges, but annoying movement controls.

One recommendation to developer: when switching from Pull tool to Glance tool please do NOT make the puzzle zoom in and out. Please let the puzzle in exactly the same place and just switch tools. The zoom just adds to the mental confusion with already difficult controls.

Also very annoying how many times my Pull tool went outside the game border and opened up the sidebar ads. Jay, maybe you could think about when some games like this could NOT have ads so close to the game border? Thanks, Tom

[Noted. I am working on a solution for JIG members to see fewer advertisements. Hopefully soon. Thanks for the feedback! -Jay]

@bioLarzen, if you're still trying to work out 14, I have resorted to the walkthrough to at least get things moving - here's a hint.

The first block to leave is the light tan/taupe one. You have to move, fractionally, every other block in the piece in order to do this. Once each (I think!), except the light purple one, which moves twice.

After that one,

things pretty much move, though the pattern of "tweak every other block" seems to be repeated.

WHEW.
I wonder if the hardcore ones will be worse! o.o

twinter,
I can move all the pieces in #14, I just cannot remove any...

(BTW, some of the comments on other sites said something like "#14 was very hard, but the hardcore ones were impossible" - so good luck woth them :D)

14 is not too difficult... if you go in a zen state and slide things around without thinking. That will get you to the end in a minute. (Seriously: same technique I used with the classical "two nails knotted together" metal puzzle... let your hands - virtual or not - do the thinking).

14 is way more hostile than 15-19 however.

Then you'll get to 20...

I'll wait for you there. I'm the one with the ripped hair, crying miserably in a corner.

Reply

OK, I gave it up now. It's clear that the difficulty of #14 was very poorly judged by the developer of the game - just google up the game and you'll see many, many forums where all sorts of ppl complain about it - and virtually no other levels, just this one.

Also, walkthrus don't really work for me because it's hard if not impossible to do a good textual walkthru for this. I tried both ones offerd for #14 here (by twinter and Mike) but was unable to understand what i should do - not because they did a bad job, but because this job (doing a written walkthru) is bordering impossible here.

This very badly understimated difficulty level should deduce one from my rating of 4, but I have already submitted it...

Shame, because up until #14 it was a very enjoyable game in which the difficulty in moving the pieces around and the (IMHO) unndeccessary and sometimes confusing zooming when switching to pull tool were easily counter-balanced by the good puzzles and nice 3D presentation. But that last level... just killed 90% of the fun for me.

Dear developer, I think you should either move #14 to the hardcore level or otherwise remve it from the game because you got a lot of your players complain about it...

It could so easily be a 5-star game...

Epilogue: Mike, I gave a last try by your walkthru and this time it worked - your walkthru is really bordering impossible :D)

This level still was badly judged, I think.

So I enjoyed playing it to start with, but issues in terms of trying to drag and look around the pieces - especially pieces not wanting to disappear after I've freed them - quickly made me feel more meh about it.

If you don't want to use the spacebar you can just click on the icon at the bottom left to switch between looking and pulling.

Interesting, but needs to sort out its bugs and such.

Reply

Ok, anyone have any hints for 18? I've twiddled my way through all the rest, but the best I can do here is remove the lower horizontal green (move the two light green wide verticals, drop the mid green horizontal). Then I am completely stumped. Walkthrough link seems to be broken.

Reply

Power of post. Follow mid green horizontal with purple, then light green, and whatever. I'll be damned if I can remember how I did it though.

Reply

Yeah. 14 stopped me dead too.

(Walkthrough instructions don't seem to work either.)

Reply

18 was my favourite. Most of the puzzles were easy once the first piece was removed, for 18 though I difficulties removing the first three pieces.

A good game but would be better with an improved interface and full screen!

Reply

This is silly. If you don't pull a block far enough for it to disappear (which is a pretty darn long distance), it will magically prevent the other two blocks from moving even though it's not touching either of them. How was I supposed to figure that out, Mr. Game Designer?

Reply

It's rather broken, sadly. Almost every puzzle clips through itself at some point with an ugly flicker of triangles, and some of them 'jam' on things that aren't there :( In this, real wooden pieces win.

Reply

Way too buggy. Spending more time trying to get unlocked pieces to disappear than I am actually unlocking them. Very frustrating as otherwise it seems like it could be an interesting puzzler. Level 8 I unlocked all the pieces but they just will not disappear no matter where I move them.

Reply

After fiddling for a bit, I think it only makes pieces disappear if you drag them in one direction for a certain distance in one motion. Of course, trying to drag them out smoothly like that tends to make you click on the ads on the side of the page.

The fact that they have these problems at all shows that something very silly is going on inside their code. Would it really be that difficult to check if one piece was some distance away from all the others?

Reply

I think that if this game was "grid" based and perhaps allowed the arrow keys to move the shapes, it would solve a lot of the clipping/removal issues. I understand that it'll look a lot cheaper without all the 3d effects that come with allowing a mouse to remove the shapes, but if simplicity allows the game to work better, one should go for that.

New version just uploaded.

Reload the page to get it. Latest version should address bugs reported earlier.

Reply

I just loaded it for the first time. I'm having same issues other players reported earlier. In particular, moving the mouse outside the game window while dragging a piece causes problems, including opening the sidebar ads if I mouse up over the ad, and the piece being stuck in a state where it's disengaged but there's no way to make it disappear.

I want this game on my iPhone. :)

Very nice game. Particularly liked the zen music and sounds. I didn't experienced the mentiond bugs (chrome, win 7 32bit), and when I want to remove the tile, I just make a quick jerk to the screen edge and the tile dissapeares..

Reply

The only thing more frustrating than the puzzles, which really weren't that bad, was the controls. Often times I had to sort of 'refresh' the puzzle because a piece that could clearly move, wouldn't. Despite the annoying glitches, it was really fun and the music was fantastic.

Nice to know that the developer listened to user comments and made the updates. I'm playing in 2012 and I haven't experienced any of the bugs or "clipping" problems, so I definitely recommend playing. This game is stellar now. Beautiful graphics, easy controls, super-challenging puzzles. My only grievance is no sound off/on button. That's about it. Great work.
