TrickyClick PLAY 3Point-and-click puzzles are some of the most popular games featured here at JIG, and nobody does these types of games better than Tom Vencel for NinjaDoodle. Now he's back with the third installment of the popular ClickPLAY series, imaginatively titled... ClickPLAY 3. Like before, in each level, all you must do is click the Play button. And again, like before, that triangular button will be quite hidden, and uncovering it requires a hugely entertaining number of clicks.

The game is controlled entirely with the mouse. As said above, your goal is to discover the Play button and click it to move through each of twenty four levels. To do this, you must solve a little puzzle, explore a little environment, manipulate an environment a little, or just do a little clicking. Each level has an internal logic to itself that requires a quite satisfying "Eureka!" moment to beat. Some of them are straight puzzles, some require a little more physics action, and some just require fast mouse fingers. Your score is judged by how many times you click the mouse, but really, it's fun just to click and play.

The highlights of the previous installments of ClickPLAY series have been the jazzy music, the interesting monochromatic aesthetics and the cleverness of the puzzle. ClickPLAY 3 continues that trend on all counts. The piano-heavy background song might be my favorite accompaniment in the series so far. It's extremely bouncy and drips with cool. The fast-paced tune might not be quite appropriate for all of the screens (such as the patience-requiring fishing level), but who cares when it sounds so good? The visuals do feel a little darker this time around, or, at the very least, have a starker contrast in its use of black of white. I think it's a change for the better, like removing the grain from a remastered silent film.

Of course, the puzzles are the main focus and remain varied and high-quality, with only one or two real head-scratchers. Some of them do have a little cruder content than in the games that came before, and while far from offensive, it does feel a little incongruent with the tone the series has set so far. Also the physics-based levels feel a little wonky in the controls, especially the last level "Fling it!". It's nothing terrible, but it did force me to waste a lot of clicks on comparatively few levels. This made me think it might have been better for the game to judge performance by a timer instead.

That said, if you're not one to obsess with achieving a perfect, ClickPlay 3 is a short but sweet experience. It may only be long enough for a coffee break, but I promise you: that break will be a happy one.

@grinnyp: A suggested change to your walkthrough:

Scene 21:

  • Mouse over each gnome in turn

  • The gnome will blink between 1 and 7 times - note down how many times each blinks

  • Click on the gnomes in order of increasing numbers of blinks

  • The gnomes will disappear as you click them; once all gnomes are gone the play arrow will appear

  • Click on the arrow.

  • 7 clicks if you pick out the sequence correctly

  • Comment on it spoilered out for good measure too:

'Course, I started on the guessing route for it as well; thankfully there's always a system to these things. Goodness though I needed the help of your walkthrough for 22, I never would have worked that out solo...

Ended up with bucket >_> no idea how many actual clicks - it was the last level and scene 12 that really got me, could not for the life of me work out why the button wasn't triggering - it's just that I had it all rotated the wrong way...

Thanks for the tip! I'll update the walkthrough accordingly - [Mike]

The Gnomies level (21) can be beaten in 8 clicks.

When you hover over a gnome he will blink a number of times. It indicates the sequence: one blink, then two etc.

There is a glitch on the fling it level, my 'flinger' gets stuck in a vertical position and it makes it impossible to finish the level. I have played through to it twice now and the same thing keeps happening.

Lots and lots of glitches for me. I cleared my cache but it didn't help. After restarting a gazillion times I gave up, it's not worth it.

(By the way, I disagree with the claim that no one is better at clicky puzzles - I think that both Kagi Nochi Tobira and Hoshi Saga are better than Clickplay. More challenging, less annoying, less buggy. But that's just me.)

In the walkthrough, on scene 20 it says

that there's a time limit. But wasn't it a click limit - max 7 clicks?

I'm not checking it again, see comment above, but if someone else feels ambitious...

    @vederblich For level 20:

Like you, I'm definitely not getting a countdown timer, just a click limit of 7 clicks. I can't pass it because of this. There's no way the boxes don't topple over when the truck picks up speed to travel the required distance. Is this a glitch? I've played up to that point twice and both times it was a click limit.

The final level bug is NOT fixed. Twice I played it through, and both times the lever just stops responding after several clicks. Hugely frustrating.

    Hey guys!

If you are having problems with the last level, try to clear your browser cache, so the updated version of the game can load. I try to fix any bugs as soon as possible, but sometimes things take a little while to update.

Enjoyed it a lot, until the Fling It level. The lever got stuck for me, and so I checked the comments here to find out that it's happened for quite a few others. Apparently Ninjadoodle's fix did not do the trick, at least for me and several others. Very frustrating! And too bad too--I was enjoying the game. Really love the music, and the levels are fun, funny, and creative.

hey guys, about level 24 - have you tried clicking on the end of the paddle and turning it from there? Ive had no worries with this level. If you click the middle it will just wobble - like any see-saw thingee, you gotta press the end. just a thought!

I figured I would give it another try today. This time, the final level worked for me. I think the bug maybe has something to do with clicking and holding and then dragging the mouse off screen before letting go of the mouse button. I came up with a similar problem on the windmill level--I tried spinning the windmills very quickly and ended up letting go of the mouse button off screen, and after that the windmills would hardly budge, just like the paddle on the Fling It level.

actually, i played until level 20 with a click limit, and passed, you just have to go a bit at a time, so your trip is divided into seven parts. on my 5th click, the boxes almost toppled over the front, so i just went as fast as i could and made it...

    Hi Guys!

Ryan! Thank you for explaining the bug that you are experiencing.

I've figured out that the problem is caused by the way the game is embedded into the html page.

If the game is embedded as transparent and you drag outside the window holding the button down - the problem occurs.

I will see what I can do about this.

    Ninjadoodle,

I encountered the exact same bug as Ryan, and it looks like a joint is being created but not destroyed if you release the mouse outside the stage. That joint doesn't get destroyed, its reference just gets replaced on the next click.

Just an update .... There is a bug in firefox - wmode transparent/opaque in Firefox won't recognise the mouseUp offStage.

As far as I can tell, that is what causes the level 24 glitch. I'm still looking for a fix.

Level 24 (Fling It!) glitch fix:

Ok guys, I've found the problem that Ryan above explained and found a workaround.

As far as I can tell, the glitch is gone ... but you will need to empty your browser cache to let the new version load.

The problem was caused by a Firefox bug which doesn't register Mouse Up events outside of the flash movie.

Thank you for the bug reports! :)

Was the truck level supposed to be hard? I got it in one click? I click near the level of the tires, idk if that something...

But in any case, nice game, I wish I could finish the second one. :P

I think the ClickPlay series is much more polished than the Monkey Go Happy series (both of which are pretty similar in concept)

I like these games but the music drives me crazy after a while. Wish I could turn it off but leave the sound effects.

222 clicks, and I'm "Sandy Speedos"

Too bad no one will ever see the levels beyond 20, because that one is just not humanly possible. Sorry guys. WAY too hard, even if your only, subjective standard of "hard" is by comparison to the other levels.

Fix 20 if you want me to ever touch this again, developers. Yeesh.

How do you get past the alpha doors level?

Regarding the Alpha Doors Spoiler, I just wanted to "enlighten" you on the the spelling of Yin-Yang. Some Chinese Taoists would be offended by spelling it "Ying-Yang".

THE EASIEST WAY TO WIN LVL 20 IN JUST 1 CLICK !! :-

Just click once on the front part of the truck ( near the grill ) and hold. your truck will move fast but without dropping any of the boxes. And u will pass the level in just 1 click

I enjoyed the game up until Fling It! Wonky controls, stuck bombs, and general bad programming DO NOT make a good click game.

What, nobody ever bothered to call these people on their "you can do L 20 in 1 click!" nonsense?

'Cause that's exactly what it is, utter nonsense. I'm very disappointed that no developers have bothered to look at this feedback, as some game authors do, and tell us HOW THE LIVING @#$@% YOU CAN POSSIBLY COMPLETE LEVEL 20.

If any of you actually did it in one click, it's got to be some sort of browser or flash exploit that not everyone can benefit from. Or you're pulling our leg for some, unknown, cruel reason.
