corygallihergiveuprobot2_title.gifSome robots are programmed to build. Some are a bit more awesome and are programmed to destroy. Still others are programmed to love, though that's more creepy than awesome. The star of Give Up Robot 2, the latest invention from Matt Thorson for Adult Swim, is programmed to jump, grapple and die, and it's especially proficient at that last one. In this tough-as-nails platformer you'll guide Robot through 60 stages spread throughout three worlds, each of which is filled with a variety of deadly traps. Your only saving grace is Robot's built-in grappling hook, and you'll need to master its use quickly.

The basic goal of each stage is simple: you're on the left and you need to get to the right. How you actually accomplish this is slightly more complicated. Use the [arrow] keys to move, and [X], [S], or [up] to jump. How long you press the jump button will determine your height. To grapple, press [Z] or [A] to fire the hook at an angle and then [up] and [down] to adjust once you're attached to something. Collect coins to improve your score.

Robot was built using cheap imported parts and the slightest contact with anything hazardous will kill it. There's no shortage of hazards in each stage, either, as you'll be assaulted by spinning fans of death, electrified walls, moving platforms gleefully launching you into aforementioned fans and walls and so on. Fortunately, since Robot's cheap to build, he was mass-produced and you have infinite lives.

Unlike its predecessor, Give Up Robot 2 features a variety of settings. The game opens in the same psychedelic area as the first game. As you progress, you'll pass through a forested outdoor area and a city. Several new gameplay elements have been added as well, including grapple points that reverse your controls while you're attached and grapple-able conveyor belts. The most significant addition is a three-use jetpack that pops up in several levels to give Robot a boost. Give Up Robot 2 is also significantly more difficult than the previous game, so new players beware!

giveuprobot2_screen2.gifThe game spans 60 stages, including three boss battles. After finishing these stages, another set of Hard levels opens up. These are, as the name might suggest, hard, so they're not for the faint of heart.

Analysis: Your enjoyment of Give Up Robot 2 is directly related to how well you can handle frustration platformers (like the Jumper series, also by Matt Thorson, for example). You'll be spending a lot of time dead, but unlike games like I Wanna Be The Guy, Give Up Robot 2 doesn't pull any "gotcha" tricks; when you die, it's your own fault rather than the game pulling a fast one, in other words. This helps to keep the game entertaining rather than purely frustrating.

While it's certainly difficult, patience and practice will see any player through Give Up Robot 2. This is due in large part to the tight, responsive controls, which are vital to a game like this. You won't find yourself missing grapples due to poor hit detection, for instance.

Games like this live and die by their level design, and Give Up Robot 2 has enough variety and challenge to keep players going. Some levels even play out like miniature puzzles, such as those involving numbered grapple points that must be hit in order. This gives the game lasting appeal and pushes the player to keep going just to see what's coming next.

Give Up Robot 2 is a solid platformer with enough neat tricks and visual appeal to set itself apart from the crowd (and its predecessor). It's worth a look for anyone who won't throw their computer through the nearest window after hammering away at a tough level. For the rest, well...maybe someone will program a robot to finish the game?

I am having problems with level 5... Whenever I try to grab that big block to pull it down, the game stops!

platformers are my favorite, but I literally can't get past the opening screen. can you spontaneously develop epilepsy?

I... I love Give Up Robot. There's something about the "WHEEEEEEEEE!" vibe of silliness that infuses everything and makes it impossible to get angry at it for long.

Not again!! -works persistantly to beat it-

You see the first picture in this article? I stopped at that level too and can understand why you probably went no further. <3

Stuck on level 60 (I'm hoping it's the last). I just can't get him to be in the right place very well without hitting the various obstacles :/

Finally beat 60! On to hard mode O.O

@corygalliher

It took me about 20 minutes to beat hard 2

the trick is to learn how to juggle yourself on the spinning fans. That is to keep yourself flying up and down from one fan. If you can do that well, you can keep trying over and over to get to the jetpack. Also, when you get the jetpack, you want to go underneath on the 2nd fan from the bottom and fling up and then try and only use two boosts to get to the next fan. if you can do that, getting to the end is a sinch

Keep trying, because level 3 is really fun. :3

A game pad would be awesome. My ring finger (grapple hook one) was killing me... up until level 4. I'm stuck there now :(

No, I do not want to see your laser.

Oh it showed my feelings so well when robot

bashed the alien out of the screen with the key

After playing Give Up Robot 1, I was GLAD to see Robot get back at that annoying computer.

"You're so mean! I'm leaving." (or something like that) made me lol

And the objects you gain in the second section

Giant Key! Awesome!!!1!!11

And the three-extra-jump jetpack in Mario-World.

Okay... taking a break at Hard 9 :P
So far, I've got 100 minutes, and at least 1000 deaths racked up. Anyone beat it? How'd ya do?

have the same prob as Koizito! even on chrome!

Great game, except for the fact that it seems to keep hanging every couple of levels. Had to keep hitting the refresh and waiting for it to reload. The killer was that I got up to level 45, got the hang, hit the refresh, but it lost the data! Had to start over at the beginning! If it wasn't for the fact that it's an awesome game (love all of Matt's games), I'd give up on it, robot.

I must be cursed I somehow managed to finish this game with 666 deaths: https://jayisgames.com/images/hs_tisb0b_giveuprobot2.jpg

Does anyone know who makes the music for this series? I really like it.

Cripes, I don't think they could they make the voice/voices(?) any harder to understand if they tried. Is there a subtitle option somewhere?

@tisb0b

it makes it worse that the death count is in red xD

Anyone beat Hard 6? I can deal with the first set of rockets, but I'm having trouble getting through the second part.

Reply

There's something about that voice cooing "Yu R m1 fav0rit roBOT" that makes the constant dying more tolerable. The clouds in world 2 saying stuff like "That's the spot", "Harder", and "Use Me!" when you grappled on to them was an.....interesting touch.

If you mean you're able to break the first block (which goes on to break the second), then you need to . . .

chill out on that spot over the fall down and then wait until it feels right to go (in terms of missing lasers). You wanna grab the rocket as it flies by and then hang to where you make it past the first and then when you can, drop past the second laser, making sure the rocket is going straight down. Now book it around the little area to the left, and you SHOULD make it to the bottom before the rocket hits the ground. You need to be on its right and then grab it and jump and stuff so it gets going towards the blocks. I think its safe to hit either, but I dont remember (im on 11). I know I did get unreasonably lucky on that one but you should be able to get it. I mean, once I figured out that i should drop the rocket, I got it on my first run. the swinging course that you have to go through is NOTHING compared to earlier stuff.

Hope you can make it. 7 is pretty awesome.

@Waggles

Thanks! That worked!

I was trying to use the rocket to fly through the last part of the level. I didn't realize you could let the rocket fly down while you zip around to meet it. You actually get a fair amount of time to catch up!

Glad I could help. 8 is kind of a b, and 9 is kinda bad, but I remember 7 being fun. Idk though, I just spend 2 straight hours playing through (and finally beating!!!!) level 11. I was like "YAY!!! ITS OVER!!" cuz the last one had 11 hard levels, but then its like "hard 12" and im like D:

11 took me about an hour and 10 minutes total play time, but most of it was stupid mistakes and me wasting a jetpack at one spot where i could grapple :P

Reply

Whenever I grapple the red block on level 5 the game freezes up, if anyone has any idea how I could fix this it would be greatly appreciated.

Finally beat hard mode!

2093 Deaths
217 coins
308:51.78 time

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to check the leaderboards, and apparently I'm the second person ever to beat it (and submit my score at least). Honestly, 11 is the most dificult, where level 12 is significantly easier, but it could be because you just end up getting so good after 11 :P

Good luck to all my fellow hard-mode-players and I'm here for help if it is needed.

Finally! gawds.. 507 deaths, 803 coins, and 74 minutes, 24 seconds.. jeeze.

@Waggles

Ok, I'll take you up on the offer. Hard 9.

I can make it past the first three spinners but then I get stuck at the part with the three falling blocks. Is there a trick to climbing up without getting trapped under the block as it falls?

GAHHHHHHHHHHH!
Just as I'm thinking "I HATE you, annoying compu - hey, he's dead! yaaaaaaa - what?sdgnjsldkfLAZAR!"

I'ma firin mah lazarrrrrrrrrrrr!

Reply

@syntax

Do you realize there is a fourth spinner to the right that flips you counterclockwise? Its in the zapblock/laser square. If you're trying to grab the fall blocks above you and pull yourself up, you're not gonna make it. Look again.

Reply

@waggles - could you help me figure out how to beat Hard Level 12?

I'm stuck at the part where you get the 2nd jetpack. I can't seem to get far enough to the right of the screen to grapple on to the rocket. I wasn't sure if there is something I'm missing, as I've gotten extremely close but never been able to actually grab it. I've been stuck on this since Saturday, and it's driving me crazy. :) Thanks in advance for your help!

Reply

@JIGuest

This is tricky. You want to use up your first jetpack BEFORE the rocketbox is in view. If not, you wont be going fast enough when it launches to catch up. See, the jetpack stops your momentum, so it doesnt matter WHEN you use them, as long as you only use 3 after the rocket launches. So, if you get the new one as it launches, just use the 3 in an even rate to ascend pretty high, and that way, you still move right while you fall and you get that extra distance to possibly catch it. The higher the better.

Hi guys, I got 2 deaths on hard mode.
lol

I'm skunkchop (#1 on leaderboards). There is a secret you unlock by getting 0 deaths in Hard Mode, and I'm extremely close to it.
I got 948 deaths my first try at it, now I'm down to 2. Crazy.

Anyway, this game is really great. Probably my #1 favorite Flash game ever. Anyone willing to die a *erm* few times should definitely play it. Level designs this good come rarely.

Why didn't I give this a try sooner? So much fun!

And hey, two hundred less deaths than in the first one! I kinda miss the trippy rainbow background though... I swear it was the impression it made that I was tripping on something that made it remotely possible to beat the first one.

Stuck on Hard 4 right now. What are all these zappy blocks even DOING in space? Did a couple astronauts happen to be passing by and go, "Hey, let's set up some blocks here on the off-chance that some robot on a jet pack will try to get through these"?
