GrinnypDismantlement: ToasterIf there's one thing you can say about the Kaitai Dismantlement games, they tend to stick to one of two subjects: common household appliances or dangerous food. Nice to see that gam.ebb.jp can stick with a theme, isn't it? Last time we had fast food, this time something a little more nutritious, plus the appliance that creates it. Yes, it's dismantling time again, and this time it's Dismantlement: Toaster!

Well, sort of nutritious. Okay, not really, since Best of Casual Gameplay 2010the "toast" appears to be made of plastic, but it's the thought that counts. If you've ever played any of the numerous dismantlement games you know the drill, all you can use is a screwdriver (and your wits) and all you have is a screwdriver. Gam.ebb has taken something that you might find in a larger escape game or a point-and-click adventure and narrowed everything down into one simple task: take apart this toaster or die. Simple and straightforward.

Well, not really all that simple. Before you can remove screws, you have to solve a wide variety of puzzles. Who knew the interior of the lowly toaster had so many shapes. Or colors. Or bombs. Yes, it's not a dismantlement game without a bomb, is it? Click around the kitchen wonder (it makes toast! And bagels! And toaster pastries! Yum!) to find either screws to remove or puzzles to solve. Solving a puzzle will reward you with more screws to remove and so it goes until once again you have reduced yet another electrical appliance to its component parts. One of the nice things about the evolution of the series is that there is less pixel hunting in each game. Most areas in Toaster that you need to click are pretty obvious, negating the frustration of some of the earlier games in finding just the right spot to click to find another puzzle.

Dismantlement: Toaster steps up the difficulty a bit this time around. Easier than, say, Dismantlement: Fan, Toaster is still more difficult than the cakewalk that Dismantlement: Burger was. It's nice to see them get back to the bedrock of the series, a common electrical appliance that has a hidden bomb. That penchant for putting bombs in things is beginning to seem almost ...friendly-like. Comforting in a way. Or maybe I've played too many of these games and am developing Stockholm Syndrome.

So yet another amusing way to waste 5 minutes of your time has dropped in our laps like an early Christmas Present. Dismantlement: Toaster is not as complex as Dismantlement: Radio or Dismantlement: Alarm Clock, but is still casual gameplay done right. Intriguing, amusing, and with its own little hidden surprise (well, not that big a surprise if you've played any of the other games) hidden deep inside, Dismantlement Toaster is the perfect way to while away a lazy afternoon. Get dismantling, and enjoy some toasty goodness with every bite!

Walkthrough
The answer isn't given right away. You first get some hints. After several levels of spoilers the final answer is revealed.

General advice before you begin: after you've removed some screws, you sometimes need to zoom out again before you can actually remove the hardware you just unscrewed.

FH, I beg a CD (side of toaster)

The letters are actually buttons, so probably you'll have to press them in a certain order.

Funny that the sentence uses only the first nine letters of the alphabet.

Press the letters in alphabetical order (ABCDEFGHI)

8 Circles (front of toaster)

How about we first toast us some bread?

After you've solved the "I beg a CD"-puzzle you can press the slider at the side of the toaster and get a nice code.

x is sometimes used if there is nothing there

x = 0
circle = 1
double circle = 2

At the front of the toaster press the buttons from left to right.
1st button twice
2nd button once
4th button once
5th button twice
6th button twice
8th button once

5 Spinning shapes

Pretty looking shapes spinning clockwise and counterclockwise. That's probably got something to do with that button at the bottom.

There is a path connecting the different spinning shapes. Looks like the triangle is the first on the path.

So we've got a 3-edged shape spinning clockwise at the start of the path, right?

Count the number of sides each shape has and look in what direction it's spinning. Turn the button the same amount of steps in the same direction.

Turn the button:
3 right
4 left
5 right
4 left
6 right

Jam Butter Bake Bread

We need to input 4 letters and we also got 4 fractions.

Talking about 4, we also got 4 words. They don't all have 4 letters though.

Actually, each word seems to be of a different length.

The denominator refers to the length of the words.

The fraction tells which letter (the nominator) to take from which word (denominator).

So 2/5, is the second letter of BREAD.

RKBM

4-coloured squares

The squares are partially covered by the yellow triangles that are in front of it. So there is a certain colour we don't see at that moment.

Beneath the yellow triangles there is a small dark-grey box.

The dark-grey boxes are all at a different location.

The first yellow triangle covers the blue colour of the square behind it. The dark-grey square underneath it has the leftmost position.

Blue Blue Red Red

Red blocks on grid

The input is 4 numbers, and there are 4 grids that only contain one or two red blocks.

There are also two grids though with a lot of red blocks. Perhaps we could combine them?

Overlay each sparse grid with the grid above it. A number is formed (as it would display on a digital alarmclock)

5296

Bomb!

Able was I ere I saw Elba
That looks like a funny sentence. There's something peculiar about it.

The sentence mirrors itself. The first letter (a) is the same as the last. The second letter (b) is the same as the second last.

Perhaps the lower sentence has the same peculiarity.

Enter the letters so that the sentence mirrors itself.

Walkthrough

Congratulations on purchasing a Kaitai Electronics toaster (model #FH15635). If for any reason you need to disassemble your appliance, follow the instructions below. CAUTION: Be sure to follow all instructions to the letter! Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.

You will need a cross-head screwdriver in order to disassemble this appliance. No other tools are required.

Disassembling instructions:

  1. Locate the safety stopper beneath the toast lever on the right side of the toaster. Open the hinged lid and press the lettered buttons in order: press A first, then B, and so on until I. If you make a mistake, simply press the remaining buttons in any order and they will reset.

  2. Unscrew the screws. Close the lid and remove the stopper.

  3. Press down the toast lever and wait 5-10 seconds for the bread to pop up again.

  4. A set of symbols will now be imprinted on the side of one slice of bread. Copy the symbols in order onto a piece of paper.

  5. Find the row of eight buttons on the front of the toaster. Press them from left to right according to the symbols you recorded during the previous step; a single circle means press that button once, two concentric circles mean press it twice, and an X means skip that button. If you make a mistake, simply start over from the left.

  6. Unscrew the screws that appear and remove the front of the toaster.

  7. Inside the toaster, unscrew the screw at the base of the first heating coil and remove it. Handle it by the base only; the coil may be hot!

  8. Examine the rotating shapes on the first clasp. They illustrate how to turn the dial to unlock the clasp; for example, a triangle rotating clockwise means turn the dial 3 clicks clockwise. Follow the instructions in the order indicated by the arrows; if you make a mistake, turn the dial randomly until the meter at the bottom fills up, which will automatically reset the dial.

  9. Once the dial has been set properly, undo the screws, and remove the clasp.

  10. On the first slice of bread, note the words and letters. Each pair of numbers represents a specific letter in the word of a specific length; for example, "2/5" means the second letter in the five-letter word. Open the hinged compartment towards the bottom and set the four letters using the arrow buttons according to the four pairs of numbers above.

  11. Once the letters have been set properly, undo the screw, close the compartment, and remove the slice of bread.

  12. Unscrew the screws on the second clasp and remove it.

  13. Unscrew and remove the second heating coil as in step 7.

  14. You will need to set a color code to unlock the third clasp. (If you are colorblind, have someone help you with this step.) Note the colored rolling boxes; on each box, the color facing downwards as it passes each peak shows the color that belongs in the position marked on the peak. For example, if a box has blue facing down as it passes behind the peak with the far left position, then the far left color should be set to blue. Simply touch the colors to change them; the colors cycle, so don't worry if you make a mistake.

  15. Once the color code is set, undo the screws and remove the clasp.

  16. The second slice of bread requires a number code (open the hinged compartment). Note the grids of red and blank squares. Overlay each grid in the second row with the grid above it; each grid in the first row may be used more than once. Transcribe them onto a sheet of paper if you have trouble visualizing them. Increment the numbers by touching them; they cycle, so don't worry if you make a mistake.

  17. Once the numbers have been set properly, undo the screw, close the compartment, and remove the slice of bread.

  18. Unscrew and remove the fourth clasp as in step 12.

  19. Unscrew and remove the third heating coil as in step 7.

  20. CAUTION: It is highly recommended that the user read and understand the following steps in their entirety before following them, as they will need to be done quickly and carefully.

  21. The screw holding the bottom cover should now be exposed. Unscrew it and remove the cover.

  22. Note the explosive. They are standard issue in all Kaitai appliances and are installed as a form of copyright protection to discourage unsolicited reverse-engineering, but will not go off if you follow all instructions carefully.

  23. The explosive is controlled by a special screw-switch which can be turned with your screwdriver. DO NOT TOUCH IT YET! Doing so will cause the explosive to detonate prematurely.

  24. Note the four-letter code and the phrases. The keycode is based on palindromes, phrases which read the same whether read forwards or backwards. The palindrome at the bottom will be missing four letters; figure out what they are by looking at their opposing positions. These four letters, in order, are the disarming code.

  25. After you have figured out the disarming code, enter it using the arrows buttons. Once you are absolutely certain it is correct, you may turn the screw-switch; if it is, the explosive will deactivate harmlessly.

  26. Once the explosive is deactivated, remove the cover from the indicator box, undo the screw that is revealed, and remove the explosive.

  27. You're done! Make a cup of coffee or tea for yourself and relax.

Anyone know how to get past the

four colour squares?

That was a lot easier than I expected. Normally I need to use the walkthroughs, and rarely do I complete even one step by myself(with the exception of the burger one). But wow, I flew through that one. Geez.

Make sure you pay attention to the orientation of the notches below where the squares stop.

Reply

Easy but fun! I felt like the puzzles were just the right mix of arcane yet logical, especially the dots and Xs.

I was glad to see the hunting for hidden parts of the device was kept to a minimum. I dislike the puzzles where you're stuck because you didn't know you could look at the side.

My favorites involve more disassembly, like removing screws from one side and then poking out a piece from the other. The linear ones lack that, sadly.

Will look forward to the next installment quite eagerly!

For the dancing coloured squares, two clues:

The solution is not four different colours. Look just below the squares themselves.

Somene clue me for the grids of squares. I can think of too many ways of coding the dots to try them all.

Can someone explain the

puzzle with the 5x5 grids of red/white squares?

Reply

Woohoo! Defuser #7583 (I think). First dismantlement I've done all on my own ... which means it was pretty easy and straightforward :-).

BTW, for anyone curious, the line on the bottom middle consisting of four characters, a colon, and a number, says "explosion number of times" (zero for me). I looked it up while trying to determine if the line above it is the number of successful defusings, or number of plays, or what (which I still don't know for sure). There's another number at the top which also looks like a counter (0019596 for me); maybe that's the number of plays, versus the number of successful defusings at the bottom? No idea.

[I believe you're right. The larger number is most likely total page views. -Jay]

It's not even a sentence

A lot easier than the rest of the dismantlement series in my opinion. This one had straight forward clues and interesting puzzle change like the rolling colour cubes and the rotating shapes. Quite enjoyable, I just wish the toast was real XD Looking forward to the next dismantlement!

These puzzles are definitely getting progressively easier. I think it's a combination of the designer's maturing puzzle language and our increasing familiarity with it.

Is there anybody here who is new to the dismantlement series? Did you find this one difficult?

Reply

Well, that's two in a row I solved without any help, and zero explosions to boot. :3

I think they're getting better, personally. The newer games have much less emphasis on pixel hunting and more on puzzle solving.

That one was fairly straightforward for me. I've played all the other Dismantlements and this was the first one that I solved without needing any hints or clues.

The best in the dismantlement series, since you get a coffee in the end for your efforts.

Btw, what is the story behind those games? A nutjob is hiding bombs inside common household objects and constructs a series of ingenious puzzles which the bomb squad has to solve before actually disarming the thing?

I mean, if this particular serial killer is hellbent on destroying people with low IQ, then he kinda fails since low IQ people will not even reach the bomb. I think he actually hates tinkerers. You want to see what makes this thing tick? Well, whadayaknow, it's a bomb. Kablam. Now you know.

There's a Hollywood movie somewhere in there, I just know it...

A rare level of difficulty! Tricky, but with a clear logic.

Some kind of very spoily hint-through:

Remove the white box on the right side

click the letters alphabetically

Open the cover

toast the bread (pull slider!)

Donut means "click twice", circle means "click once", X means "don't click"

Remove cogwheel-inspired layer

Corners and rotational directions and normal safe-cracking

Remove white layer

Letter no / Lenght of word

Remove yellow layer with color dice

Carefully note the positions of the little brown markers.

Covered color + brown marker position

Remove layer with lattices

Combine the upper pattern with the lower to see a number

Defuse bomb

Both texts are palindromes.

Press the button when it has turned green

Awesome. I love the Dismantlement games! This one was a bit easier than the previous ones but it was still awesome.

Honestly, I don't like the linear dismantlement games. I preferred the ones where there were multiple things to do at once and it didn't feel forced. Also, this one was so easy it wasn't even satisfying. The more difficult a puzzle, the less people can solve it on their own, true. But the more difficult a puzzle, the more enjoyment the people who do solve it have.

Maybe it's because I'm such a fan of the series, or maybe I was just in the right mindset this morning, but this was the easiest Dismantlement puzzle I've done. It took me less than two minutes with no hints (and believe me, I usually need hints on the escape games).

It seemed a little too straightforward, but I loved it all the same. Keep the Dismantlement series coming!!

How to take apart the toaster
Toasting the bread

This kind of toaster has a trigger you pull to make toast. So look on the right side of the toaster there is a spot that sticks out. Click it. Almost ready to make the toast. But the trigger is blocked. Open the white compartment. It says: fh... I beg a cd.

This is no anagram.

Not a sentence either.

Remember a song you sang in kindergarten it starts with a ends with z.

The alphabet.

Undo the screws. Click the trigger.
Wait for the bread to finish toasting. Click the symbols. Note them. Back out to the first screen.

Removing the front cover

Click the dots at the bottom. Remember the symbols.

Enter from left to right. One circle inside another hit dot twice. One circle hit dot once. x do not hit dot.

The numbers I show are the amount of times you hit each dot.
2 1 0 1 2 2 0 1

Remove screws. Remove front cover. Remove screw. Click box screw was in.

More coming later.

Easy as pie. All of the puzzles were creative, but very easy. The only thing I found hard was the letters at the start, until I read that they were in alphabetical order. I probably would have tried that eventually, but I was too lazy :-)

Reply

In and out so fast it was a little disappointing. The only hicup was the first puzzle with the letters because I was really expecting it to be a lot harder than it was.

To save some hair pulling for those using Opera: you should play this game in Firefox or IE.

If you think you are doing the right thing for the second puzzle (8 circles), you probably are. Double clicks don't seem to register correctly in Opera.

it was good, i only had to use the walkthrough once, and that was because i didn't see the arrow on the toast. probably the best one yet, not too hard, but not too easy

Yay for me (perfect run on the first try!)...

...and yay for the designers, that returned to a somewhat more logical and "physical" build of their items. I still kinda like the radio more than the rest, but this one is WAAAAAY nicer (better?) than the latest few keitais.

The JAM BUTTER BAKE BREAD part was the one that took me the longest (it also took me a couple of minutes to figure out what to do initially,) but the whole thing was pretty easy.

first time i didn't need a hint! was it that it is easy or am i just finally understanding how the bomb maker thinks after playing so many different ones?

easy or not, it was fun

I thought that the toaster is the balanced puzzle yet. The puzzles are ranging from easy to medium but are all logical, and everyone seemed to enjoyed it well.

Great job, Kaitai!

No. 25183, and for once I only needed one hint!

Well, that was fun. Wouldn't mind seeing a slightly larger object to dismantle, though. I'd go for a Dismantlement: Piano, personally.

I love the Dismantlement games. I must admit, that one was a bit easy compared to a few of the others, but still fun regardless.

Maybe this Dismantlement was extra easy, or maybe I'm getting better. Either way, I'm hella pleased that I didn't have to look at any hints. I finished in less than ten minutes. :D

First one that I did with very little help, so I agree that this one seemed a bit easier than some of the others. I liked the mix of puzzles, and enjoyed figuring them out. All in all a great game!

I had a bit of difficulty with the spinning shapes part but only because...

I found that the shapes were spinning a little fast for me to readily identify the shape and # of sides

Um, guys? I'm stuck at the part where it says, "The End". lol But really, that was straightfoward, just like Burger.

Yay, I finally managed to solve one of these without using a walkthrough!

First one I've managed to solve without a walkthrough as well. So chuffed!72482

I like this series, but this one I feel is the weakest so far. Not sure why, it wasn't that it was the easiest, though I suspect that helped. Maybe just because it seemed like it'd all been done before? I can't quite pinpoint my exact disappointment here, but I just feel like something about it was off. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it! If they keep making more, I'll keep doing em!

"Woohoo!

-Jay]
