Mikemike-agent079-screen1.jpgLet's consider the nameless supervillain whose supervillainous lair is the setting of Agent 079, a new spy-themed point-and-click adventure game from Atomic Cicada. This is a man committed to his work. While lesser evil geniuses would be content to tie their nemeses to an assembly line and take an early lunch, this guy knows how to persecute a superspy: Lure him into your funhouse of bizarre puzzles and gadgetry, compel them to collect items, crack codes, shunt entire rooms, and learn to smith keys; then, just as escape seems imminent... Well, you'll have to play to find out.

Agent 079 puts you in the stylish patent-leather shoes of the eponymous superspy protagonist. Use your mouse to point and click in this point-and-clicker; navigation, item collection, and interaction are entirely mouse-based. Your inventory bar is at the bottom of the screen. Click an item to use it in the environment, or to combine it with another item. If you want to dismiss the item, click the handy pointing-hand icon. When riding the elevator, you can click on the up-and-down arrows to the right to switch floors. Other tasks are explained by in-game instructions, so keep your eyes peeled.

Analysis: Agent 079 is about puzzles first, presentation second, which is not to say that the presentation is wanting. While the rough, watercolor-looking visuals and extremely-limited animation don't make for the slickest design, it looks fine, and even engenders a sort of comic-book vibe, like you are looking at separate panels on a page. The soundtrack is pleasantly understated, mostly confined to soft mechanical whirs and dings, like you might expect to hear in a supervillain's super-lab.

mike-agent079-screen2.jpgThe puzzles themselves are where Agent 079 shines. They are clever, logical, and strike a fine balance between straightforward fare and the occasional rewarding head-scratcher (there is at least one color-based puzzle, by the way). For the most part there aren't any obvious hotspots, but nothing is cruelly hidden away either, so pixel-hunting is not an issue. Some of the puzzles have at best a tenuous connection to the game's purported spy-theme, but they are all so well done that you will hardly notice.

The setting is no ordinary den of super-science, for this evil genius has installed rooms that can be moved and rearranged, so that any room can be adjacent to another. The puzzles that involve moving rooms around are by far the most clever and most rewarding Agent 079 has to offer. Sometimes you need to move rooms around for reasons of simple navigation. Other times you want to exploit resources that various rooms generate. There is a furnace room, a power room, and a few others; and if you want another room to use these resources, you have to arrange them so that such a transfer is possible. It can be a little tedious figuring out how to arrange and rearrange rooms to get where you want to go, but the puzzles are cool enough that it's worth it.

Agent 079 is a solid adventure game with clever puzzles that is well worth the hour or two it takes to complete. It's also a bold model for a particularly devious brand of dedicated supervillainry. Once you escape, make sure you don't burn yourself.

I think I'm almost done.

I solved all six clocks, got the blacklight filter, used it to get a string of Chinese characters.

I then set up the light room to the right of the computer rooms so the password system works in Chinese, then entered my new password. My reward was a pair of proverbs about wind. What the heck do I do now? I tried entering "wind" in English, to no avail.

Ah. Had to look at the walkthrough, but now I'm done. How was I supposed to know...

...to enter just the Chinese symbol for "wind" as a password?

Reply

@SonicLover

I should have known better because

I live in China and have been studying Chinese for years; I cannot attest to my fluency, but I DEFINITELY knew the character for 'wind.' It just never crossed my mind.

Surprised that I got through the rest of it without any help at all, though.

Can someone help me with the ice room?

I can't figure out how to get the part for the scale from the ice room. If I unfreeze the room, I can't get to the weight because of all the water, and there's no door nexr to it. I figure I have to somehow make the air conditioners blow hot air, but I've tried placing the fire room next to and beneath the wind room and ice room, and never got hot air.

ThemePark:

Have you noticed how the room unfreezes differently if you pipe heat in from the side, rather than from beneath? Also, don't forget there are two ways into that room.

Reply

And I'm out - can't even remember the last time I solved a game like this without outside help!

@ Themepark or others stuck with the ice room -

Once you've melted the ice you'll need another way to access the room. The two platforms on its far side are not connected, but they're close enough to each other that you can make the leap.

The air conditioner's just a red herring...

And the final language puzzle...

What do the two proverbs have in common and bolded? Wind! Make a guess about which of the Chinese characters corresponds to the Russian & English words you already know, and enter it singly.

(It's the second character.)

Reply

GJ - Thanks - got it! Silly me, I was trying to be logical...

Reply

ThemePark,
I assume you're talking about the rope that gets frozen in ice?

As you noticed, there are two ways to thaw the room.

Having the fire room beneath, and the fire room to the left (as seen from the elevator entrance.

But these don't do entirely the same thing, one only melts the room partway - but both keep you from crossing the room from the elevator.

If only there were another way into the room...

... like the left-hand door from the clock room. From there, it's just a sliding puzzle to line up the clock room, ice room, and fire rooms, and the clock room to a door.

If instead you're talking about collecting the other object in the room (which relates to the weight in the back...

You'll need to fix the container, so it fills with water.

That'll take epoxy and epoxy hardener.

Remember the dice face in the organ room?

Once it's fixed, simply melt the room and press the button.

A text walkthrough would be great, but it wouldn't be easy trying to write to everyone on how to change the rooms appropriately. Regarding the chinese character

You don't neeed a google translator.

When you get the black light filter,
insert that in the center machine in the fiber optics room, then look to your left.

You should see a arrow pointing to the right. Go back to the tile puzzle.

Decoding it will give you a direct translation of the chinese proverb. The second character is the chinese character for Wind.

How do you get the diamond for the light room?

Reply

Helpful hints once you have the elevator (1st and 2nd) totally unlocked:

Once you have all the individual room combinations done, i.e.

Fire + Wind

Gear + Light (left is switched on)

Light (right is switched on) + Wind

Then line up the 1st floor with these rooms, clockwise:

Gear + Wind + Fire + Ice

It will be much easier to get the remaining puzzles all at once with fewer room moves.

Extra hint:

Start at the Sand room and end at the Sand room before proceeding to the final

Gear time puzzles.

Bold means line up the door here.

General hint:

Keep your eyes open in the Light room. (The diamond clue has nothing to do with the Diamond [Sand] Room). For everything else, the notes when you mouse-over are very helpful.

Reply

For all People that got stuck with the organ pipes (like me)

You can find a hint elsewhere

It's at the power room (lightbulb)

It's hidden in the colored image. To get it visible ...

you may want to change the ambient light color.

Use the red filter on the light slot. Then turn the lever to the middle position.

JIGuest:

Did you remember to enter the power room and flip the switch so light was headed through the cable to the left?

By the way, the "nameless supervillain" is called Dr. Nemesis. You see it when you load a saved game.

@JIGuest and SonicLover
The power room (lightbulb image) must have the power on the RIGHT side. Put the music room to the right of the power room and the "6 on a die face" will have power.

@Escaper
The password must be in Chinese. On the Chinese proverb there are four English words and four Chinese words. Send power out the left of the light room and put it to the right of the computer room. Enter the character that means "wind."

@Hedodnista22
Do you still have the other keys you got? Items CAN be combined in this game.

Interesting game but I have some issues. I got out before finishing some of the puzzles

I had not entered any of the Chinese passwords, for instance, but somehow got level 3 access

, but when I found myself

hurtling into the sun

, I decided to go back and start over. Solved every puzzle and got out to find

the same ending! I'm still hurtling into the sun!

Doesn't seem right.

I opened the Badge statue and it told me I had opened the B-A-D-F-E statue pedestal.

I'm so happy that I managed to get through without any external hints.

The

organ pipes

were the hardest. I had a close call at the end, when after a minute of head-scratching I got the

code for level 3

on a lark. When it worked, it was exhilarating.

Great game!
