From the creators of the wildly popular Choice of the Dragon comes Choice of Broadsides, a text-based multiple choice RPG that puts you in the shoes of the greatest naval hero of all time... you!
The game is completely text based, and is played by selecting whatever you feel is the appropriate option or response for a given situation. You may find yourself dealing with a tense battle at sea where your choices could determine whether your crew lives or dies, or deciding how to treat captives you've brought on board. Depending on the type of character you want to play, the right answer to any situation is whatever you want it to be. Certain choices are received better or worse by other characters within the narrative, but if you want to be a cold, calculating officer who only cares about yourself... be one! If you want to be the hero who saves everyone... be one! Some paths are easier than others, and danger isn't always confined to the battlefield.
Analysis: Like its spiritual predecessor, Choice of the Dragon, Broadsides offers a lot of freedom in its well written narrative. You can be male or female, hero or scoundrel, Coke or Pepsi... it all comes down to you and how your actions affect the scenarios that unfold before you. The story here is a bit drier than the previous Choice of Games title, with more thought given to how people are going to react to your choices and think of you than where to fire. Diplomacy is important, and can mean the difference between a long and successful career, or one cut bloodily short. Of course, this isn't to say you should kiss everyone's boots or try to keep everyone happy; you'll get the most rewarding experience out of Broadsides if you approach situations by thinking the way your character would honestly react, rather than by simply picking the choice you think will get you the best boost within the game. In this, the game offers a nice chunk of replay value, so you can start over again with a different set of tactics to see how your attitude changes certain scenarios.
Broadsides is also exceptionally more complex in terms of statistics. Apparently, life is simpler when you're a dragon; all you have to worry about is picking bits of armor out of your teeth. Broadsides adds a multitude of new statistics to your character that need to be kept track of to keep your advantage, and as such puzzling out the best possible choice for a situation is harder than before. Arguably, this can be a point in its favour, since it forces you to roleplay more and really think about what your character would do. It winds up offering a deeper experience because of it, but also may scare off players who preferred the jump-in-and-go approach of Choice of the Dragon.
Surprisingly deep and well written, Choice of Broadsides is an ambitious adventure with a lot of twists and turns that should provide a lot of meat for fans of text RPGs to sink their teeth into. The lack of fangs and scales this time around shouldn't be a deterrent, since Broadsides offers a wealth of interesting characters to meet and tricky situations to resolve... and it's all up to you how you do it.
Those of you with an iPhone/iPod Touch or an Android phone will be pleased to learn that Choice of Broadsides is available on both the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Android Games!
Definitely more complicated than the last one. On my first playthrough, I played a gruff, unlikeable captain, but one who was unmatched in fighting, sailing, and intelligence. I royally messed up the mutiny sequence and most of the other social sequences, but managed to fight my way out of anything I talked my way into.
The main problem was the loads of different characters. When the game asked who I wanted as my first mate, I didn't recognize any of the names!
This was a remarkably engaging text-based adventure, with great saving throws rolled in for bad choices (which is probably justified given its lack of saving), but still punishing you for them.
Very polished feel.
I liked this one a lot. Definitely tougher than the dragon one (I loooooved the dragon one, though). This one didn't seem to keep track of your injuries like the dragon one did; by the end of the game I'd been slashed in the leg, shot in the shoulder, had my left hand cut completely off, and it didn't seem to phase me at all!
That was very, very awesome. I played through once as a Captain Ahab type, once as a Frederick Wentworth, and they both worked out pretty much as expected. The one thing I'm not sure of is
why, in the climactic battle with Villeneuve, you still get the option to grieve "your friend"'s death even when all your previous interactions with them have been hostile.
I love this type of game! It's just a shame that they are very rarely created...

I ended up losing a hand when I had to fight Villeneuve (or whatever his name was), since I decided to lower my sword, as he was quite a good friend, and had saved my life before, and he took advantage of that and attacked me and ended up cutting my hand off! I killed him in the end though, and got sent to the king as a hero when I got to Albion. ^-^
Although I'm not an expert on marine terminology, the game manages to instill a deep "Oh my god, I'm in command of a navy ship!" feeling through possible character actions and their consequences.

I ended up marrying Lady Musgrove (I'm a sucker for redheads).
I also noticed:
a) It doesn't matter whether you go out for a drink with Villeneuve after the tussle in the streets.
b) After playing several times I realized sailing is not as important as patronage or combat skills. Just opt not to sail when the Captain orders you to capture another ship.
c) Politely, then tactfully question Pigot during the storm. When prompted, do not pick a side. You avoid making Pigot and Jones your enemies this way.
d) Also, I'm not sure if the mutiny at the end can be avoided. I got my ship to the point where the crew was moderately happy and reasonably disciplined, but the whispers still started. Just remember, never give up!
e) Lastly, go after the Lynx, even if it means boarding/destruction. It will not bode well if you choose to sail away.
Tip: Don't enter "Jones" as your own surname. One of the main characters is named Jones, and it gets very confusing! :P
When I played, I went for the wimpiest decision almost every time (because that's what I would do if I were really a navy captain) except:
When you fight Villeneuve, in which I somehow picked all the choices that let you kill him without meaning to. Darn. I really didn't want to kill him.
Very, complicated game. Will play again probably after I post this. My stats first time around, playing the honourable and skilled seaman, but not really liked or politically linked:

Regarding Villeneuve:
Was fairly fun to have an honourable friend on the other side of the war, treated him well, had fun, and ended up only disarming him so we both lived to tell the tale.
But next time around,
Will focus more on Intelligence so I can win the Anne Hawthorne (sp?) girl; I'd go for the flirty and fun one, but I have absolutely no idea what stats I'd need to be able to dance well. Likeability? Tact? I was already high in Fighting and Sailing so I definitely wasn't lacking in coordination. blah... (yes, I'm slightly bitter about ending up lonely...)
I liked this game a lot, even better than the Dragon one, which I loved.
My only question is, am I actually able to get a love interest? My sailor preferred the company of other women, and I wanted to pursue a romance with Villeneuve. Did I make the wrong choices, or is there no way for my sailor to get a girlfriend? Would I have been able to get a husband if I so wanted?

Managed to get the Musgrove girl too; apparently I can dance now (I think the story mentioned something to do with Fighting).
Sparklify: I thought the thing with Villeneuve was going to go somewhere too. :( Oh well, I guess.
Fantastic game. I discovered that I'm rather skilled at avoiding mutiny, although apparently incompetent at sailing in general. But at least I ended up in a happy marriage with the shy brunette - this game really nailed the type of girl I like :)
I'm not certain but it appears that if you take sides against Pigot
You have the opportunity to build Tact
by apologizing
, and the opportunity to build Courage
by saving his life
.
I really liked this game. I tried to play it as honestly as possible, and I actually got mad about what happened to Carter (was that his/her name?). I really liked Carter.

Only played through once so far. As usual, I picked the choices that, if that was my life, I would probably have picked. Some decisions didn't have the effect I'd hoped, but overall, things seemed to go well. Though
my romance with Anne Hawthorne (or whatever her name was), while successful, was kinda boring. I expected her to be more on the "intelligent" side of things rather than just being "formal".
I'll probably play through again later...
Blast.
Villeneuve chopped my hand off by accident and we ended up killing each other D:

I liked this game for its immersion. The plethora of stats is a strength. After looking at my stat-sheet, I gave up puzzling out the relevant stats to the situation, and just played by character. By the time I saw the name Christy-Palliere, I was definitely chuckling. :) :) A wonderful addition to my journey through the books--three Huzzays!!
So I just played as Jack Aubrey, trying to make the choices I thought he would.

Fantastic!
A lot of effort has obviously been invested in this game.
I particularly enjoyed being a swarthy Madame Horatio Chiktionary, with men knowing their place is in the kitchen...hah! But it also felt a little weird. Madame Villineuve and myself were getting just a little too close, and crews of women just seem so...petty...and vindictive...
5/5 'shrooms.
Tried my best to raise dicipline and stop the mutiny from happening, but always ended up doing the wrong thing.

Chiktionary "Madame Villineuve and myself were getting just a little too close, and crews of women just seem so...petty...and vindictive..."
It seemed pretty realistic to me, based on the few pirate/navy tales I've read; The men were just as petty and vindictive (if that's how you read it) in those books.
Just came to say that I definitely liked this one better than the dragon one. None of the dragon choices were at all the way I wanted to be, and I also found it really hard to win at anything. This time around it was easier to see what to do, or easier to not screw it up completely at least.
Just found something neat for people who want to test absolutely EVERY option.
The game memory is based on your cookie and over-writes it each time you click a choice, so when you come to a point where you want to see all the results, keep that page there and open the same web address in another tab(s) (IE people, just press FILE, OPEN NEW WINDOW/TAB on the top left; might work for other software). After you've finished exploring the choices, close all the other tabs/windows and make the choice you want in the main page. Continue and repeat. Enjoy :)
Trick may or may not work for people.
About the post on top: you need to refresh the new page first. So refresh ALL the new windows after opening them in case things go wrong.
If an admin will merge my two double posts together, I would be very grateful. Thanks.

I've tried three times now, and cannot get a good result on the mutinous sloop.
I said some not-very-kind things about the developers when I was asked where I left off in the firing sequence at the beginning.
I really, really enjoyed this game. Was pretty disappointed when it ended (all three times). First time played 'myself,' second time did the same but chose the opposite on anything I had a hard time choosing the first time round, third time chose options that I was curious about the result.
Looking forward to the next game a lot.
This really needs to be made into an iPhone app like Choice of the Dragon.
wait wait wait, isnt albion the region in which fable 1 & 2 (and most likely 3) take place in?
well anyway i loved it.
(its just fun to imagine being a sailor while my mage rips apart all in his path XD)
For those having trouble with the mutiny,
doing the following with decent stats (I haven't exactly pinned this down yet, but high leadership and intelligence seem to be vital..I started with fighting and leadership as my two high traits, with sailing being my weakness, and not messing up from there) will avoid the mutiny altogether:
Clean the boat
Keep them working (Work on gunnery)
ID the worst and punish
Keep an eye on him
Whip him soundly, 10 lashes
Talk to Jones, drop the matter
It was a murder
Investigate
Imprison
Appoint Jones
Thanks for the tip drywater.
I found that the four basic skills you are allowed to alter in the very beginning are all important.
A lack of skill in sailing will make it the choice of ambush by sailing around and flanking impossible, and if the skill is lower than about 35, you will fail to surprise attack the merchant ship during night in one of the chapters.
Not being good in combat will affect the results of you charging recklessly into enemies, but there are usually alternate choices, covered up by other skills.
Leadership can take effect when things are tough, e.g. when there is a potential mutiny, it will be a bonus on your side.
If your Patronage is low, you will fail during unexpected exams (one which I never saw comming, and never appeared when I had high patronage). It'll also give you potential trouble from higher ranks if you mess things up, and with high patronage you have the option to ambush while disguised as a ship wreck.
Last but not least, your skills affect your future, but your choices alter it even more. Have fun!
I think the game was rather disappointing. It seems that you can be an idiot or a coward and get a better ending than smart or a good man.
To avoid mutiny, you need jones to see you give discipline throughout the game. Even for himself. If he thinks you unwarthy, he'll rebel. I found no way to furl the sails, which makes the dream redundant and annoying.
I realy thought some parts weren't thought to the end in this game. It was off in some parts as to the stats and progress. Maybe it was influenced by a book which made some resolvments pre-determind..
I really enjoyed this game and it was fun to play it as a female character. Are there more multiple-choice rpgs out there? I have found the text-entry ones but those are a little more intense. Thanks for any recommendations.
First time through and I must say I like it. The menu-driven interface is rock solid, but on occasion felt just a little *too* constraining. The one part of the game that was jarring were the various "how do you feel about such-and-so" choices. I'm sure they served a purpose, but I found they violated viewpoint, not egregiously so, but enough to remind me I was playing a game and thus detracted from an otherwise well thought-out storyline.
Even so, this is an excellent example of interactive fiction. The player's choices throughout serve to drive the story for the most part, and decisions made at or near the beginning do impact the story and thus gameplay further on to some extent. Players should heed well the game's advice about playing to your character's strengths and avoiding situations where your character is weak. There isn't necessarily one "right" way to work through any of the scenes presented. For example, an earlier post quipped that in order to avoid certain "exams" (not the dream sequence) you needed higher patronage. Trust me, it isn't so. I managed to achieve high rank with no patronage at all (and no exams - see spoiler). Look at the situation and the choices presented, and try to determine if one of the options favors one of your character's stronger abilities.
As you are piloting the first captured ship to port, you encounter a technically weaker but fully-armed ship. You can attack it, avoid it altogether or try some sort of ruse. Since my character's best ability was sailing, I tried the ruse of sailing astern after dark and managed to capture that ship as well. The Admirialty was so impressed they immediately commissioned me and I was spared the examination.

As far as the mutiny goes: the best way to deal with mutiny is not to have one.
Keep in mind:
- A disciplined crew is a happy crew.
- The Captain is THE law aboard ship. Don't shirk your duty. Act decisively when events warrant.
- Be harsh, but not cruel.
- Even a Captain can forgive if necessary.

How to be Post-Captain by 25 years old:
Do not avoid slope, use strategy to either ship close to it or use your gunnery, whichever is your advantage.
How to avoid mutiny:
Clean the ship completely would increase both discipline and happiness. Then you can pick another task. Just don't go easy.
Don't punish all of them but identify the worst. If you have a good leadership, the discipline would increase greatly. When Jones told a bawdy joke, just keep an eye on her.
Whip the one that fell asleep 10 lashes so she could go back to work and increases discipline and happiness. Now that the crew should be reasonably happy and well disciplined. Whoever you choose after Carter's death as the new mistress should be fine. But choosing Jones would give you a boost in courage.
About Marriage:
Apparently marrying the shy one would give you nothing but your marriage just works perfectly. To win her heart is quite easy, you just talk about your life in sea.
Marrying the redhead one, gives you a little bonus in patronage but would cost you quite a fortune, if you don't mind that. To marry her, you will need to have good fighting skills and a high salary.
The blond one gives you a boost in patronage but your marriage isn't that happy. You don't have to have patronage to win her heart as long as you are intelligent, but you will need a high patronage to impress her parents.
I like this game a lot. It's like a real adventure and choices need to be made. With bad choices, you could end up dying, but with the right ones, you will be able to get out of the bad situation and turn the table around. Good luck, everyone.

Looove this series, looove this one, but I don't like it as much as Choice of the Dragon. You need less prior knowledge about the topic! Interesting. In the mutiny sequence, you can treat your crew badly, get overthrown, jump on a lifeboat, survive, and get hailed as a hero back on land.

I was really kind of hoping for an ending where I ran off as pirates with Villeneuve (we ended up really good friends). Oh well. This was still a blast to play.
Just so everyone knows, a new version was uploaded recently in which the programmers added an option to pursue a relationship with Villeneuve.

Nice. I really liked it, a lot more than Dragon, seeing as this seemed to have a constructed plot. I can't remember my final statistics, but Villvenue:
I treated him honorably and we were friends. At the end I tried to disarm him, but he wasn't having that, so I ended up killing him, but not before he cut off my left hand.
These are my stats if anyone is interested, I tried to play a selfless captain expert at sailing that gave more importance to his crew's safety than his own.

I made passionate love with Villeneuve and tried to avoid killing her in the end, but alas, she died. I thought we had something special...
How do you get the shy brunette as your girl/boy? I always fail!
I got the redhead and Hawthorne before though, the redhead's a nice wife to have, but you really need to be rich by the end of the game to have Hawthorne happy...
I'd like to say how much I enjoyed this game, maybe even better than CoDragon, though that's good too. Perhaps play CoD first, then this. CoBroadsides just has so much more depth to it, more choices, more stats, more outcomes. It has much higher play-time value (it takes longer to play, meaning enjoyment lasts longer) and replayability.
I'd also like to note how in both Choice games, you can pick both your sex AND your sexuality. This may seem a meager thing, but to equality-minded people such as myself, this means a lot. For example, when Bryce asks you about a--
wife (or husband if you're female), you can state that you don't care for the opposite gender. Then you can still choose to agree that a wife/husband will further your career, or to say not interested. I chose to imply I was gay, then say it would benefit my career. I proceeded to have a hot, passionate, raunchy gay romance with Villneuve.
Also, the only way I could avoid the mutiny was to balance happiness with discipline:
I think it depends on your stats whether or not the walkthroughs of the mutiny sequence will work towards non-mutiny. For example, better fighters can avoid wounds in the mutiny, highly likable people can tell their own bawdy stories, high-leadership people benefit more (better discipline gain) when identifying the worst.
My stats before the first choice given to you as post-captain were:
Sailing 44

I could only avoid mutiny by two methods, none which matched the previously given action lists. The main difference is whether or not to keep working them after cleaning the boat, and whether or not to punish them. If I chose to keep working AND punish the worst, I get mutiny. If I just choose one over the other, I avoid mutiny.
Thus the courses of action are either:
(and this is what I follow)
Clean the boat, keep them working, gunnery
Don't punish
Chastise Jones / Keep an eye
Put him on double watch, and forbid him from rum, whip him, ten lashes
Take Jones aside, drop the matter / Loudly ask, threaten to whip, let them go, use a spy to find out more
Absolutely not, this was a murder; investigate the murder, imprison them
Appoint anyone (Jones is the best bet)
--OR--
Clean the boat, then take it easy
Identify the worst
Chastise Jones / Keep an eye
Put him on double watch, and forbid him from rum, whip him, ten lashes
Take Jones aside, drop the matter / Loudly ask, threaten to whip, let them go, use a spy to find out more
Absolutely not, this was a murder; investigate the murder, imprison them
Appoint anyone (Jones is the best bet)
There seems to be no way to edit comments, so I'll edit here: Correction, I use the SECOND strategy I gave rather than the first, as the first gives less happy, less disciplined crews.
Also: Savantis, look for a post by excellentgal further up, she seems to know how to woo the wives.
Hi Zucabr,
About wooing the shy gal:
I tried to talk to her about sea life as excellentgal suggested, but she got scared and moved away from me. I tried this 2 or 3 times, and she behaved the same way, which is why I think its somehow related to stats.
I didn't record my stats though, so it would help to know what stats help...
For the shy girl I think you need low blood thirst and to have avoided as much hand to hand combat as possible
this was a fun game...my name was captain sparrow!!
Is there any way to go back and look at your stats from past games??
Savantis,
In order to get the shy girl, your bloodthirst must be lower than 50.

I only learnt about these games recently looking at this very website :D and so far i love them ive also played the dragon one which was fun but not so good with the skills, I was so sad this game ended and they just skipped the last chapter of this game and i eagerly look forward to the next game!
I did badly on the exams and became sworn enemies with Villeneuve who i was able to injure severely at the duel and later killed after successfully boarding the ship.
I did good with the mutiny and was glad letting that officer who disliked me was killed didnt come back to haunt me. Never got married though, didnt find a mate in the dragon one either - thats me i guess :S
Just a fantastic game.
Brilliant game. Makes me want to play it again with different options.

Brilliant i died when i tried to avoid venulllesssse?venulesesele?vanisulee? well that guys ship it sucked but the second time i disarmed him and i was married and had no wounds! :D
Old thread, yes, but I noticed that there were some people lamenting on the lack of further plottage (romantically) with V.
That's NOT true. If in the scene where you can decide, you choose the option of "not... erm... it's not the women I prefer, if you know what I mean" option (I don't know if it works otherwise) then
after the card-playing game, you need to fight off the footpads, and then say that you need a drink to steady your nerves.
V. Touches your hand and you can choose whether or not to interpret it romantically or not. If you do, you can... uhh, spend the night in his quarters, if you get my drift. And then you can pursue the relationship further, although nothing else really comes of it.
Yep. That's it XD
^^
What I really want is a choice-by-choice guide to the outcomes of every option. I've already played several times and now I want to play it for my ideal ending. Does such a walkthrough or guide exist?

I really really enjoy this game. Someone should make a proper walkthrough with what each (significant) action will net you so you can get the highest or most out of the game.

I found a way to prevent the final mutiny from happening. Not soon enough to save Carter's life, but soon enough. The trick is to have really good leadership skills (70 or above) and when som of the crew behave badly, choose: identify the worst sailors and punish them. That will greatly increase discipline. Oh, and at first, when you get a choice as to what you want the crew to do first, choose clean up the ship. that will increase both happiness and discipline.
Another thing: if you just keep increasing happiness as much as possible, and don't care about discipline at all, and you sided with Jones against Pigot once, you get to go pirate with him when the m utiny happened. That just happened once with me though. Only a hunch of what I did to go pirate.
If you've picked the option for marriage that says "It's not men/women I'm interested in...", you can
have a "night of passion" with Villeneuve, provided you win the fight against the footpads and go out for a drink

Guess I didn't do as well as I could have. I ended up dead from loss of blood.
Villneuve ended up cutting off my hand before I killed her
I found it really interesting being a woman in this game! EVERYTHING is reversed in terms of gender from the norm. Men stay at home and are considered more "delicate" than women. The ships are refered to as "he" instead of "she". The woman proposes and takes the lead in the relationship, and is the "caller". My last name didn't change after I was married either, but I don't know about my husband! The way the men said their lines... I was surprised that it didn't say anything about the men wearing ball gowns! I found it unique and different, even kinda fun, but I also feel it was rather lazy compared to the other "Choice of" games. Just because I am a woman means the whole crew has to be women? All roles have to be reversed? Why couldn't I be a woman commanding a male crew, or even a co-ed crew?

Almost my entire story was happy! No cannon Mis fire, no mutiny, a happy marriage to Ms West, and I disarmed Vinelleuve. Only real bad things that happened was that Pidget hated me, I failed the test, and Carter died. But all in all it was a pretty good game and story. (Sorry about the double post)
Wow that was really good! I'm glad it was so long and wasn't like 'here is a 20 text adventure story'
I was able to marry Miss Anne Hawthorne, which apparently is hard to do, as far as Villeneuve,
I had regarded him as my friend and was able to disarm him thusly we both survived.

I had good stats on my first play-through. Though I regret having to kill a good friend in the end :/
This is game is fun but honestly (and this may be an unpopular opinion) I just can't get behind the gender-flipped, female-dominated world. I tried playing as a woman but an all female crew drinking rations of rum and being whipped for failures just came across as weird to me. Gender flipping the entire world also seems lazy to be honest, I'd much rather play a female character in a scenario where I was disguised as a boy and there could even be a extra layer to the game in trying not to get found out. And also Mistress Midshipwoman is a clunky title.
So, maybe it was nice of them to try, but I'm actually much happier just playing this one as a male character.
The thing that's driving me mad is, how are you supposed to obtain any money? No matter what I do, the ending always tells me I have barely enough to buy an estate and live as a country gentleman. I've successfully
captured the merchant ship at the beginning
and acquired a Wealth score in the 50s and 60s and the outcome is never any different.
