Weekday Escape

GrinnypAs the holidays draw closer everything seems to get more frantic, doesn't it? No worries, we have you covered. Yes, this week's escape is another surreal jaunt that will take your mind off your troubles. Welcome to A Cold Escape by Cogito Ergo Sum, a Japanese room escape game that will help you escape from reality (for a while, at least).

coldescape_bed.gifThis week's offering, like last week is not so much an escape from a room as an escape to an altered state (or at least an escape from being sick). This is the adventure of a cat and dog whose master has fallen ill, or, as the opening movie hilariously states, "Master is a cold!" Follow the adventures of the intrepid pets as they attempt to make master feel better. And what super pets they are! No, really, they have super powers. Or, at least, powers. So let's get started. Or, "Let's nursing!" Seriously, you have to watch the opening movie before you start. That alone will make your day.

Navigation through this two room apartment is simple and accomplished with arrows that appear at the sides or bottom of the screen. Pick up items to go into your on-screen inventory. There's no changing cursor, so be prepared for a bit of pixel hunting, but nothing too terrible. Simply double-click on an inventory item for a close up when needed. There is a nice mix of puzzle solving and use of found objects here, as well as a test of your ability to follow directions. Just remember, advice given in a cute escape game is not, perhaps, the best way to treat an illness in real life. Just saying.

The art is a cute, flat cartoony style in muted colors, and there's even a pleasant little tune playing in the background. Well, pleasant for a little while, at least. Fortunately there's a handy mute button when the music crosses over into "creating an axe murderer" mode (after about 2 minutes).

Analysis: Another surreal adventure into some rather strange territory, but frankly couldn't we all use something to make us smile right now? This is cute casual gameplay and something that is guaranteed to leach away the stress of dealing with, well everything that is going on at this time of year. The translation into English is a bit... shaky, but that only adds to the giggle factor.

Despite all the silliness, there's lots of real escaping fun to be had. A nice mix of puzzle solving and use of found objects; with the need for the animals' own special abilities thrown in for good measure makes for wonderful gaming experience. There are even two endings to be found in this little gem. Marvel at the leaping dog and the punching cat, just remember to use them well while you are playing nurse. Get ready to experience some light, silly fun and play A Cold Escape.

A Cold Escape Walkthrough

I wish my cat was this helpful when I'm sick. I'm a vet tech, so I'm used to being the one providing nursing care to THEM! So, they want to nurse, eh? Let's get started!

  1. Check the board on the wall to find a list of four digit numbers.

  2. The circled question mark in the top left corner has a hint for us.

  3. "multiples of 3" "not multiples of 7" "not multiples of 9"

  4. That implies that we're looking for a number that is a multiple of 3, but neither 9 nor 7. You can do the math for all of them if you'd like, but the only one fitting the criteria is 6789.

  5. Zoom out, and let's check out that skill stand.

  6. Oh, if only training your dog was this easy. Punch in your 4-digit code.

  7. Wan has now learned to jump high! I think we can assume that that'll come in handy.

  8. Move left to find another board and another skill stand.

  9. Zoom in on the board.

  10. This one's a little less time consuming. The hint here indicates that the numbers form a grid, with XYZ denoting the y-axis and ABC the x-axis. (e.g. AX=1, BX=2, etc.)

  11. By matching the 2-letter combinations at the top with the grid, we get the four-digit number 1225.

  12. Zoom on out, and zoom in on the second skill stand.

  13. Punch in the code, and POW! Nyan suddenly knows how to... punch? Really? Alright, whatever you say...

  14. Zoom out again and move left.

  15. You'll see a standalone hutch and a sink with cabinets.

  16. Zoom in on the hutch first

  17. Open the bottom cabinets and take the towel. The upper cabinets are locked; we'll check there later.

  18. Zoom out, and zoom in on the sink.

  19. Opening the cabinets from left to right, we find a feeding cup, a pillowcase and... wait a minute, too tight to open?

  20. This looks like a job for Cat-ptain Falcon! Select Nyan in your inventory and use him/her on the stuck cabinet for a satisfying "CAT PUUUUUNCH!"

  21. Grab the kettle and the postcard.

  22. Zoom out and move left.

  23. Here we have a chart on the wall, an unadorned Christmas tree and a refrigerator.

  24. Zoom in on the chart for a list of everything you'll need (most of which you already have). So, besides what we've already found, we'll need an ice pillow, some water for the towel and kettle, and some medicine.

  25. Zoom out and zoom in on the tree.

  26. Kind of bare, huh? Except for that one strange-shaped ornament in the lower branches... oh, it's a pencil! That might help!

  27. Zoom out and zoom in on the fridge.

  28. Open the upper door to find an antipyretic sheet (that essentially means "fever reducing" for those of you not versed in medical terminology).

  29. Close the door and check the note. We're already aware that we need a damp towel, but maybe it means something more...

  30. Zoom out. The bottom drawer is empty, but the middle drawer seems to require a 3-digit code. We'll come back to that.

  31. Let's take care of some business! Zoom out twice and move right, zooming in on the sink.

  32. Turn on the faucet and use the kettle on the running water.

  33. Place the full kettle on the stove and click one of the knobs to start boiling the water.

  34. Once the water is boiled, pick up the kettle to let the water cool for a few seconds.

  35. While we're waiting, run the towel under the tap. Hey, there's some writing.

  36. Personally, I read it as "SOS" at first, but, that also kind of looks like "505," and we DO need a 3-digit number...

  37. By now, we should be able to fill the feeding cup with boiled water. Double-click the feeding cup, then use the kettle on it.

  38. Zoom out, move left, zoom in on the fridge and zoom in on the middle drawer.

  39. Punch 505 in and press the top-right button to open the drawer and take the ice pillow.

  40. Double-click on the pillowcase and use the ice pillow on it.

  41. Now all we need is medicine! Why not ask Santa for some?

  42. Double-click the postcard, then click it once to turn it over.

  43. Use the pencil on the postcard to write Wan & Nyan's letter to Santa.

  44. Zoom out and turn left twice.

  45. See the red loop hanging from the ceiling? Bet a well-trained jumping dog could reach that. Use Wan on the loop and down drops a spring-loaded postbox.

  46. Use the postcard on the postbox, and awaaaaay he goes!

  47. Use Wan on the loop again to bring the postbox and the cold medicine down.

  48. Maybe we should check the dosage instructions. Click the left side of the box to find a key taped to the back (no instructions, though).

  49. Move left and zoom in on the hutch again.

  50. Use the key on the upper cabinets to find a jelly drink. Something to help the medicine go down, I suppose.

  51. Doctor, I think we're ready to treat the patient! Zoom out, turn right and click on the bedroom door.

  52. Feel free to check the patient's temperature (use the thermometer on the head) as you treat to watch it go start to go down. You can place objects in no particular order.

  53. Put the feeding cup on the bedstand.

  54. Use the jelly drink on the patient's head.

  55. Place the cold medicine on the bedstand.

  56. Drape the damp towel over the headboard.

  57. Use the antipyretic sheet and the ice pillow on the patient's head.

  58. Use the thermometer on the patient's head now, and you'll be asked if you're sure.

  59. If you answer "Yes," you'll be treated to the normal ending. At least the fever's better. Still, something's missing...

Special Ending

  1. If you answer "No," then... well, nothing happens.

  2. Let's check and see if we missed something...

  3. Move back out to the kitchen and turn twice.

  4. Hey, now there's a green loop. Time for another of Wan's juuuuumps!

  5. Hooray, we've decorated the Christmas tree!

  6. Turn twice and enter the bedroom.

  7. Use the thermometer on the patient's head again, and this time select "Yes" to get the Christmas party ending!

To get the better end

when you have everything, and it asks you if you want to use the thermometer, say no, and look around the kitchen until you see a green thing, like the post box one. Use the dog's ability on it, to make a Christmas tree. Then use the thermometer, then you get the X-mas party end

Cute, entertaining, easy! Perfect! Gotta love the "Let's Nursing!!"

Reply

"Disclaimer
Nursing here is not really.
Please follow the doctor's advice when really nursing."
That really made me giggle. ;D
Anyway, seems relatively easy so far. Just wondering, since there is no apparent way to combine objects, how do you

pour the boiled water from the kettle into the feeding cup?

Reply

Ah, wait, nevermind. Figured out that you can combine objects.

Reply

Does anyone know how to find the key?

Reply

Where's the key so I can get some food??

Awesome, a cold escape for the first day of snow! XD

Jay--

Please keep the Weekday Escape! I'm terrible at them, but I love them anyway, and the simpler ones like this are actually possible for me to do. As for the people who complain, they're just being petulant.

Master is a cold! Let's nursing!
Game completed, Happy Xmas! end. Thanks for the walkthrough, I didn't know how to combine items, and I certainly didn't know how to find the key. Sweet game!

P.S. Please, keep the Weekday Escape! Alright, so I can't actually do them, but it's the spirit of the thing!

Aw come on, this one wasn't so bad. Any escape game that doesn't involve pixel hunting is okay by me.

Dear Jay!

Please keep the Wednesday Weekday Escape. I am with ray9na and Holly. I am not good at escape games but I really enjoy them. It is a great way to spend a lunch break.

Maybe you can put in a good word from us to GotMail. I really do miss their games.

@banjoe
Jayisgames offers many other types of games. Perhaps you should try some of those rather than dissing this sweet little escape game.

Reply

First, I would like to say that even though I am terrible at escape games, and I usually have to use the walk-through, Wednesday is my favorite day of the week. I am very glad that jay is games has a weekly escape game for us to play.

Second I thought that this game was pretty good. I liked that it was simple and short. I also liked the fact that I got most of the way through without having to peek at the answers.

Third, that key was REALLY hard to find. I don't know why, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out where to look. I never thought to look...

on the back of the medicine box.

Forth, I liked that if you didn't get the good ending the first time, you could go back and find the other ending without having to start the whole game over.

Jay, thanks for the great games.

Me and my sister always look forward to Wednesdays as well, always wondering what kind of escape game we would be playing today. For some reason, we have a special love for escape games that we simply don't have for most other point-and-click games... perhaps because it's easy to say "there is an ending", or maybe it metaphorically represents our daily life and our desire to escape from our troubles... who knows?

While one must admit that these past two weeks have differed from others, they have their own target audience as well, and besides, it is nice to have something that doesn't tax our brains mentally or visually for once. Call it escape games for beginners if you will, but they are good to crack a smile at lunch time. :)

Please keep Weekday escape, Jay!

Reply

Wow! I had no idea I would offend Jay so much as to threaten to do away with the weekday escapes, I was just voicing my opinion on this and last weeks escape games. I thought that with Jays track record that a little jab and poke might get them back on track...please we all do love the weekday escape I had just thought you could do better thanks Banjoe

It wasn't a threat, it's something we have been tossing around in discussion lately since it seems good quality room escape games are few and far between these days.

I was just putting it out there to see what kind of reaction we would get.

I'm pleased to see that a few people still want to see the regular weekly feature anyways.

The problem with reviewing a game every week, independently of its quality, is that players can be disappointed because their expectations get frustrated. This leads to us finding it more difficult to trust the reviewers' criteria, so we end up a bit wary about what we are going to get when we launch the game instead of jumping straight in knowing that we are in for a good time.

I, for one, would rather have fewer but better games, instead of a fixed periodicity, and perhaps some kind of alert system like a RSS feed.

Anyway, this game's broken English was its better feature. All your colds are belong to us. :-)

[Edit: We never review a game independent of its quality at JIG. We always seek out the best games available to feature. While the quality of the games we do feature may vary from time to time, you're still getting games that we feel are better, in terms of quality, for one reason or another. -Jay]

Def keep Weekday Escape. Even if the quality suffers, it's reassuring to know that there's going to be something out there weekly, even if it is just a five minute adventure. Not knowing when we're going to get another Strawberry Tomato isn't great, but knowing that there's going to be something weekly helps, I think.

I remember registering with gotmail and playing all of their games, getting all the super secret members only stuff, and seeing previews for new games. But then that wasn't enough. I looked at all of the escape games they had. But eventually the site just quit loading for me, no matter which computer I was on. I resorted to sites like escapegames24 just to find a room to get out of. The quality was so bad, but I didn't care. I had something to get me through the day. It was a dark time, but Weekday Escape has provided a steady stream of games, and even if the quality suffers, I can at least know that it was something the JIG staff felt was safe for human consumption.

I started playing casual games with "Crimson Room," which I stumbled upon completely by accident one day looking for Sims stuff (don't ask me how Sims got "Crimson Room" to come up on Google). Some escape-the-room games are awful, but most offer a little something to enjoy. I liked getting the games from JIG better than LazyLaces (though I *adore* LazyLaces) because they came with an in-depth review. While I almost always need a walkthrough, JIG's offerings once a week of escape games makes me look forward to Wednesdays on JIG.

On the other hand, there seems to be a derth of really *good* escape-the-room games. I don't think you should do away with the escape games, but maybe offering the program weekly is too much. Perhaps it should be bi-weekly instead.

On a 100% personal note, I thought this one was *cute!*

If you really want to get rid of something, get rid of the evil Captcha at the bottom when you reply anonymously and go with a different program. The Captcha presents me with a z and a 7 and won't recognize either one properly when I type them in. I *always* have to copy whatever I've written and reload if I get a z or a 7 in the picture.

[Edit: Thanks for the feedback. As for the captcha, unfortunately, that's the only one available to me. We are working on implementing other means to sign-in and post comments (Twitter, Facebook). Perhaps that will be better if you're dead set against creating a site account with us. Sorry for any inconvenience. -Jay]

The game is not something exceptional but it is fun, there still challenges of discovering things though the part of

hint provided as texts and placed near the puzzles

kinda spoiling the experience a bit.

I like seeing how the cat and dog dialogue, it is cute.

Now I'm kinda wonder what the mean of quality in room escape games. Hard puzzles, people give up. Easy puzzles, they ask harder ones. ._. Perhaps I'm just ranting, but as escape game developer myself, I keep wondering how to catch attention of both escapers and normal players as well.

Looks fun! I'm about to play. I'll probably comment on the game again soon enough. By the way (no offense intended), in the review above, it should be "two-room apartment", not "two room apartment! There are a few other grammatical errors as well. I am on the Grammar Police Force, after all! Just kidding.

Also, I'm trying not to use the walkthrough!

By the way, I must assume the thermometer in the opening scene is in Celsius.

Reply

Elisha, probably safe to say that it is, yes. Normal human temperature in celsius is around 37-37.5.

So at the end of the game when his temperature is down to 36.4, he's pretty frozen. Don't let your pets nurse you, people.

I am commenting a bit late but the holidays keep you busy! I too love Weekday escape coming every Wed. and I appreciate those, usually ginnyp, who review them. I HATE illogical, funky escapes that make no sense and that you would never guess in a million years unless you click on absolutely everything and try to combine everything, or figure it out but think you are wrong because the pixel you are looking for is very hard to find- those inane leaps of logic ruin the gaming experience for me. However I realize that other people like those types of escapes and consider them hard and challenging, whereas I think they are stupid. The nice thing on JIG is that I know what kind of game it is before going in and I can skip those I don't like. There is a full review of the game, if it doesn't sound like your thing then don't play. I love JIG because of the reviews, not necessarily the quality of the games- although I appreciate that you do your best to find good games, by reading the review I can usually tell if I want to play it or not.

Great game. I love these sweet, heart-in-the-right-place characters. Here is the "5h0rty 0ff1c1al L15t" of The. Best. Lines. EVER. It's really long, but I spoilered it to be safe, & to save room onscreen.

Let's nursing!

That's only the beginning of all the cute, sweet, crazy, funny, ridiculous lines from this PERFECT game for gamers like me who CANNOT escape-game, but like to anyway! The translation was top-spot as far as I'm concerned, I like iffy Japanese-English in games! In addition, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep the Weekday escape! This site is perfect just the way it is! 'O-O

Am I the only one who noticed that the cat can punch the mail box?

The game link has changed I think, it redirects me to this new address instead: http://joker7777.info/game14e.html

[Thank you! I'll fix that and check the other past Cogito Ergo Sum game links while I'm at it. ;-) ~elle]
