Psychotronicpsychotronic_crossblock_title.gifHere's a delicious little treat from DJ Trousdale at deviantART. Crossblock is a simple and rewarding puzzle game with a sublimely deceptive difficulty curve. At first, you might think it's too easy—after all, each puzzle is just a collection of white squares on a grid—but the complexity grows organically, quicksanding you deeper with each level, until you find yourself waist-deep in Puzzle Solving Mode, goggling at some mad conglomeration of blockwork, your brain shutting down in whinnying, eye-rolling stupefaction.

Your goal is to eliminate all the blocks on a level by dragging a line across them, one horizontal or vertical group at a time. Each level has a number that indicates how many blocks you can cross out at once. Just click and drag across a group, consisting of exactly that number of blocks, to erase them.

This is all a lot easier to understand when you're looking at it, and the game eases you into it with a gracious and sinister hand. The lovely hand-pixeled scrolling backgrounds and jazzy soundtrack (all by the game's author) help make you feel comfortable and unthreatened, but don't be fooled. There will come a point where you just can't believe that such a straightforward, honest-looking pile of blocks can hold so many baffling complications; that such a friendly, casual game can so effortlessly grab you by the peaknuckles and lead you around the room skipping.

Nice work, DJ Trousdale. Good puzzle game.

This is a fun game! I agree about the steep learning curve, because the first few levels were cake walks, but now that I'm on level 30, things have gotten a lot more difficult.

I have a method:

Start by finding pieces that can only be cleared in ONE direction. You then know that (those) piece(s) are going to be either your first or last things taken away. They will generally be multiples of the amount you can take away. In asymetric puzzles, I suggest finding the difference between similar but unequal parts and going from there...

Overall... 4.5 out of 5 from me.

Great, unique puzzle game. Just like JNinjaz said, it isn't too difficult until level 30. I'm starting to feel that stupefaction right about now...

Reply

lol... I need help on level 40 if anyone can give it...

Reply

JNinjaz, any tips on 30?

Reply

What a great game.

Although it could be considered a mixture of many parlour games (draughts, chess etc) this one has managed to create a new ruleset whilst preserving an easy to understand format.

5/5 without a doubt

sorry for the double post but in case anyone was wondering, this game will automaticly save. So if you want to quit the game, it will allow you to do so to come back and play again (a contiune button will appear under the play button)

Nice!!!

For level 30:

The moves are writen where the bottom left 1,1 and the top right 6,6...

5,6-5,3; 4,1-4,4; 3,1-3,4; 6,3-6,6; and the rest should be somewhat obvious

Reply

sorry for the double post, but i forgot to mention that that is as much as i remember for that level... I could be wrong...

Excellent puzzle game. 4 stars. Would be 5 if it were prettied up and the method improved for selecting the desired blocks.

They all seemed pretty easy...until level 50!!! Can't figure that one out.

Reply

phew, I finished. the first poster's method is the same as I used, and it's a good way to go by.

Reply

I like this game....a little stuck on puzzle 47 but I'm getting there. I wish there was an undo button and not just a level reset button (unless there is one and I didn't see it)

Reply

I'm stuck on level 27! How do you guys get so far?

Reply

The trick to the ones that can't be solved through basic deductive reasoning (i.e. hmm... where's a square that's in a row with too few to make a line, but in a column of just the right size?), for instance, when you essentially just have a huge square or diamond to work on, is radial symmetry.

In other words, if you have a big square or donut, you don't want to shave it down to something that looks like an L, that'll never work. You want to shave it down to something that looks like a pinwheel.

This still leaves you with a fair bit of trial and error, but anything that starts out with radial symmetry will maintain it all the way to the conclusion, so you at least have a starting point.

Reply

You guys are lucky; I'm stuck on level 50! No skips! And I had 1 skip left! >.<

Reply

Nevermind! I got it.

You have to make a fishy!!!

Level 50 Tips:

You need to take out all 8 outer tips with only 4 lines.

These 4 lines are also going to end up clearing up the grid in the middle.

The lines of exactly 7 around the edges that seem too obvious to take off first? Yeah, take all 4 of those off first.

Now take the 7 squares out of the middle of each 9 square long line that are now comprising the outside of the outside of the shape, so aside from the 8 floating bits around the edges, you have a nice square frame with pointy corners and horizontal/vertical symmetry.

Now comes the tricky part. You know how we've kept the whole thing REALLY symmetrical up to this point? Time to give that up.

Take out the middle of the solid lines touching the central checkerboard on the top and bottom. Doing so to the left and right sides the same way becomes impossible, but don't worry about it.

Home stretch time! At this point I saw the solution and rushed through, so I'd suggest putting more faith in traditional solving methods than the rest of these spoilers.

That said, we can now finally take out 4 of those outlying bits with 2 loooong straight lines.

Those lines took out the extra bits keeping us from making our LOOONG horizontal lines to take out the outlying bits on the left and right. At this point, it's just simple cleanup.

Reply

Hm, really nice puzzle. Good difficulty progression. By the time I got to the end I had pretty much figured it out, so 50 was a nice challenge.

Reply

Interesting play. I got to 17 will try again later. I often get several games to play then go and play them the next night. I did enjoy it. I found the background to be helpful rather than a problem.

love the game - but level 39 is mean!!!! I just can't figure it out!!!! any help? :)

Reply

I tried JNinjaz obvious solution for level 30, but unfortunately it's not so obvious to me. :(

If I follow JNinjaz instructions, I get an L shape on one side and a 2x2 box of squares in the corner opposite the crook of the L. I end up with a 2x2 block left over. In fact, this is what happens no matter what approach I try.

Any help?

Reply

Excellent game, and a very nice analogy by Syntax. If one were that way inclined one could print out all the levels and play it on a table with coins. Brilliant.

My only gripe is that I accidentally 'skipped' a level by not knowing about the 'skip' option and pressing on the icon as soon as it popped up. Players mistake I think.

Well done.

Reply

Well, I got level 30, but for the life of me I can't remember how. I started drawing lines, and suddenly I had it. Before I drew the last line I tried to go back and reconstruct the steps I had taken to get there, but to no avail.

I will say this, though:

You have 36 blocks, which means 9 lines of 4, so whatever you end up with, it's not going to be symmetrical. Trying anything symmetrical will just leave you with four boxes left over.

Reply

Ouch... My brain is already starting to ache at level 25. I know I can get it but I feel like my brain is going numb. Great game though!

A modification to jninja's level 30 (I think one of his coordinates is wrong):

Reply

hint for level 39

think about it drawing your lines in groups of fours and work around it in a circular motion (as if you are eliminating a 6 by 6 square) and start on the line of six. your last four moves will be eliminating the 4 outside "arms" and the 2x2 square in the middle

hope that helped

Level 30 solution

1,1-4,1;1,6-4,6;2,5-5,5;2,2-5,2;5,1-5,6;1,2-1,5; hopefully, you can get it from there.

Reply

GREAT music! (Good game, too.)

Reply

The game is excellent, quite strong casual concept. But I disagree about the learning curve thing. I'm on level 46 thinking about how level 45 was way too easy. You just have to pay attention to the size of the lines, and most of the times leave the lines with less squares to the end, because you can only cross them out in one direction. The game could have harder levels.

Reply

Level 20 has me scratching my head. Anyone have any hints?

Reply

And once again, behold the power of the post. :-P Boy, do I feel silly.

Reply

Two things I would like:

1) a little more space between the blocks--it can be really frustrating when you're trying to draw a line bounded on either end by other blocks.

2) an automatic save function that works--I got up to level 38 yesterday, then opened up my browser today to find that all my progress had been wiped out. :(

Reply

Hmm... scratch that first comment. Apparently you can draw the line from the middle of one box to the middle of another. Oops.

Second comment still holds, though. I'm afraid to close the game because I don't want to lose my progress.

Reply

I just completed level 50. Having now completed all the levels, I can say that I don't think this game has a difficulty curve, per se. Some levels are definitely harder than other levels, but at the same time I think different people may be challenged by different levels. I found level 50, for example, to be very easy--after a quick look at the board I started drawing lines and got it on my first try. Level 47, on the other hand, took me forever.

Anyway, despite the save glitch (maybe my cookies got wiped somehow?), it was very enjoyable. I wouldn't mind seeing a level editor in a future edition, if the author were so inclined.

Reply

I'm stuck on level 49 :( any tips?

Reply

Level 40 is IMPOSSIBLE! Those that have completed the game must have skipped it, right? There's no way to get all the "outlier" squares when you're eliminating by 5's. HELP!

I have just finished crossblock all 51 levels without using the skips. I had trouble with levels (30, 34, 39, 40, 46, *47*, **49**, 50).

spoilers follow grouped so you can seperate:

to see help for level 30 look at muddgirl's post.

to see help for level 34.

1) take out the 2 vertical groups of 5 outside the gaps so that 1 above and one below the gaps
2) now just follow the rows of 5 but make sure you do them in pairs.

to see help for level 39.

1) start with the outer edge of the box
2) next start with the smaller of the two outer spokes. get all 4
3) do same for larger spokes.

to see help for level 40.

1) start at bottom left spike go up 5
2) take out the middle row.
3) remove the vertical spike from the far right
4) bottom horizontal row
5) vertical row then horizontal row

to see help for level 46.

1) take out vertical row of 6 (5th from right)
2) take out horizontal row (2nd from top)
3) vertical row far left of the top 3
4) vertical row (4th from right)
5) leave last 2 vertical rows to last

to see 47's *hated*

1) take out middle rows of 6 both horizontal and vertical
2) 2nd row from outer edge start from the group of 3's and go to end leaving the 1 next to the group of 3
3) follow around for all 4
4) 2 rows of vertical 6's in middle
5) top and bottom groups
6) all rest are vertical groupings

to see 49's **hated worse**

1) lowest point verically to point 7 up
2) horizontal has 7 near middle
3) vertical has 7 far left
4) both horizontal have 7
5) both vertical have 7
6) last 7

I will do these in order of when they come up:
(27,42,45)

27:

1) take one of the two pillers from the bottom out
2) remove the bottom horizontal row
3) remove the other bottom piller
4) remove other horizontal row
5) remove outer sides

42:

these directions will be done in pairs but have the same directions

1) take out the first horizontal 6 starting from the top right
2) take out the vertical 6 that were crossed over
3) repeat for horizontal and then vertical

45:

start at the middle point down the stairs then remove either a horizontal or vertical row that is the full length.
alternate between a vertical and horizontal moving outward towords the longest points making sure you get the entire row.

for those who are having trouble with 50 see if this helps:

keep symetrical first two directions
1) take out the rows and collums that are 7 each (outer edges)
2) next row in take out the middle section leaving the corners of the 9's

unsymetrical section
3) take out the row above and below the checkerboard section leaving one on the ends of both rows being removed
4) take out all the virtical 7's that don't require extra removals
5) takea out all horizontal rows
6) take out last two columns

39:

start at one of the corners of the box
and remove the outer row (all 4 sides)

(box goes from 6x6 to 5x5 with a gap of 1 between the pair of spokes)

each spoke has two sections
start with the smaller one and work your way around the box only taking the smaller one

(box goes from 5x5 to a 2x2 with a gap of 2 between the box and the remaining spoke)

now do the same with the larger spoke

47:

take out the 2 sections that have 6 (1 row & 1 column)
take out the braketed sections # (### # # #)
there ar 4 of them
now take out the center tow columns
next take out the top row and the bottom row
!!!DO NOT DO ROWS HERE!!!
last take out the 6 columns.

now the 2 new horizontal rows of 7
next the 2 new vertical rows of 7
last the final horizontal and then the last vertical

Level 30:

Remember to differentiate between rows and columns...
In the third column clear the bottom 4 squares, as well as in the fourth column. Then clear the first four from the second row, and the last four from the first row. Then the first four remaining blocks from the first, second, fifth, and sixth columns. All you should have left is the bottom two left and right, which you can now clear.

I always love when an original simple idea pops up. This is just like that. Couldn't be simpler, still a challenge - especially the last 5-6 levels.
Still, not too hard, easy to push forward. I was through in about an hour, most levels completed with the good old T'n'E method :)

Nice work, nice game, high score from me.

One small side note: a take-back-the-last--steps feature would make it an even better game.

I'm pretty sure some of the keyboard/drum sounds in this game are the same ones from the song about the universe from the film "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life"

I like the game. I also agree it gets hard after level 30 but then it gets to difficult too fast if you don't have a game plan.
