PsychotronicTrapped Part 2:The DarkRodrigo Roesler of Rabbit Tell has released Trapped Part 2: The Dark, the middle installment in a trilogy of puzzle adventure games distinguished by a literary flavor and an unusual perspective. The Dark, like The White Rabbit before it, gives you a third-person isometric view of the story. You move your well-dressed, blank-faced character by clicking on the floor where you want him to stand, or on the object you'd like him to investigate. Helpfully, your pointer will turn red when it rolls over things in the environment you can affect directly.

Use objects you've found by clicking on your "items" tab to bring up your inventory, then on the item you need, and finally on whatever you'd like to use it on. You can't combine items directly, so often you'll need to utilize several objects in turn to solve complex problems. Using the [i] key to raise the inventory menu and [T] to put away items in hand will make your life easier.

I also recommend selecting "zoom" on the "options" tab as soon as humanly possible, in order to save yourself some unhealthy squinting. Those of you who had your eyeglass prescription permanently altered by the last game may now breathe a sigh of relief.

Play all the games in the Trapped series:
Trapped: The White RabbitTrapped: The DarkTrapped: The Labyrinth

Analysis: This series has a lot more in common with the old Infocom text adventures than it does with modern point-and-click games. Rather than relying on abstract puzzles and thorough visual investigation, the Trapped games plop you in a mundane environment, lavish you with a huge inventory, and then ask you to be extremely clever.

You'll have to become the MacGyver of amnesiac adventure game heroes, usually making the best out of what you have, since few of the items you'll find look like keys that fit specific locks. Of course, everything in The Dark does have a purpose, but sometimes you'll feel like you're just picking up random bric-a-brac and contraptioning your way through the game. It's refreshing.

The downside is that the logic of the game world isn't entirely consistent. Some of the puzzles require knowledge of the real world, while others require a kind of dream logic, and it's difficult to know what type of problem-solving you need to apply when. Sometimes you won't even know what obstacle you're supposed to be tackling. If you enjoy having your brain stretched in surprising directions, you might love it. But it also might prove very frustrating.

Just remember that nearly everything you see or read is an important clue, even if it just looks like a touch of atmosphere.

Of course, text adventures had one giant advantage: the length of time it took to do anything was exactly equal to the time it took to type it. Here, you have to watch your hero amble slowly from place to place, often without knowing if you're making progress. Thankfully, Roesler confines the opening puzzles to a limited area, but by the end of The Dark, you'll once again be wandering around a giant maze of rooms any time you want to try a new tactic. It must be possible to fix this without sacrificing the series' distinctive style.

Play Trapped Part 2: The Dark

Cheers to Mariolinamay, Max, Softer, Stephen, Mauvejet, and Kari for suggesting this one. =)

Is anyone else having difficulty loading the game? It always stops at 71% for me?

Reply

oooo!!!!
its good so far..... i dont have that much stuff yet so i dont know what's to come.

Reply

My game has slowed its loading in the low 90% range. Is it because of the JIG effect, or just a really big download?

Reply

OK, I have the waterwheel happening but how to shorten the chain to pull down the wall???

Reply

I really loved the first one, and I'm sure I'd love the second one, if only it would load.

Gosh. I tried refreshing, I tried opening and closing the page, and still it stays at 97%.

Ugh.

It wouldn't even bother me so much if it would stop at oh, say, 21%.

But this...
It's although they build you up and up and up and then "FLOP. Sorry, no go!"

>:[

Reply

Zoya - for times like that when a file won't complete loading, chances are something interrupted the download the first time and corrupted the file.

Sometimes the only way to correct that is to empty your browser cache and try reloading the page again.

Reply

ok, as usual, i'm stuck quite early on.

can't get thing under table, or ball open. also can't tell what the mirror is saying.

Reply

Wow, great! I was looking forward to episode 2!

Hmm... I was promised to get an email notification though as many of us probably was - and I received nothing like that...

Reply

I've opened up the brick wall. And some creepy apparition warned me not to go in. Now what?

I still can't get the sphere to open. :/

Reply

Thank you! :]
That would actually probably explain alot.

Reply

That was creepy, but I liked the joke about 'Jumpman' the plumber and his Princess, and the one with wishing the game ending - they took that from Sam & Max Hit the Road.

Also, lucidsubconscious,

you don't get the ball open until much, much later in the game.

Which thing under what table are you having trouble with?

Reply

i got passed the room with the watermill.. then what?! cant get through the door in the next room.. help...!

Reply

oh man, i can't wait for the last one. the logic wasn't THAT far-fetched... but i can see how it's a little out there.

Reply

OK - my very first reaction is that either I'm missing out on something very badly or I'm really meant to spend more than 20 minutes trying to explore "for the umpteenth time" 2 very small chambers where i can collect a handful of - so far - useless staff plus drag a mirror here and there.
Not a very welcoming start to a game.

Makes me suspect it's gonna be pixel-hunting time...

Reply

Here's a hint:

You're not supposed to use a key for the first door. Try to think of another bright idea.

Reply

Right now I'm at the point of trying to get coded messages from the book - putting first letters together, etc... :D

Reply

Heck... I'm out of the chained door... At last.

Reply

I am completely stumped. I'm

in the house, missing the third piece to the heart box, and with two locked doors and one without a handle. I've made a ton of useless phone calls (at least they seem useless) and I am at a loss as to what to do next. I've tried everything I can think of - and I'm sure I've overlooked a small detail - but that detail is eluding me. And I've yet to figure out the concrete sphere.

Reply

I can't find the third (bottom) piece of the heart. Any ideas???

Thanks for the reasoning behind the credit card thing. I had called previously and was rejected. I didn't even tie the wishing well and credit card ideas together until you mentioned it. :) Thanks. It's good to know there was a reason it worked the second time and not the first.

Wow, that was... wow. This guy has the creep factor down. A couple of things- under options you can zoom so you're not pixel hunting. You can also turn off the lightning. It can be distracting, but it is a clue.

Reply

HA! I don't belive this!

inside the house where episode #1 took place you find a phone in the study. You can call different numbers you find reference to. I tried - don't really know why, just for fun, i guess - 911 - AND THE GAME REACTED!!! didn't take me any closer to the solution but it reacted! A HUGE thumbs-up, Rodrigo :DDD

hey i feel sooooo stupid. ok now i need help with finding something to open the door after the secret room. i've been looking everwhere. all i have is

i really want to get onto this heart biz, lol.

i found the first and third piece of the heart. where can i find the second piece?

Reply

How do I get the second piece of the heart? I already got the first and last piece.

Reply

Hi all, I'm Rodrigo, the creator of the game. I saw the comments and thought of clearing a few things out. :)

For those of you who ae having trouble loading the game, the server's been very busy since the game release, and sometimes it gets very unstable. The game is not very big (about 1.5MB), and that's usually a question of refreshing the page. I'm really sorry for that, and I'm already negotiating a solution with my server.

bioLarzen, as for the newsletter, this is also in the hands of my provider, they still hadn't released me the mailing tool (I think they figure out I'm a spammer). The newsletter will be sent, but very very late, and I'm sorry for that too. :/

And, since I had a telephone with a simple script to make it work, there was no reason to not include various phone numbers - instead of just the ones you actually SEE in the game. I couldn't leave 911 out. Glad you liked it. :)

Thank you Psychotronic for the great review. After the first game, the dream-like puzzles were a conscious decision - we knew a lot of people wouldn't like them, but that was the style we wanted to follow. :)

Cheers, and good game to all. Sorry again for the problems we're going through.

Reply

Perhaps a green jumper can help you to get the second piece.

Reply

i re-played part one and found rabbit coin

in the hall, between the doors of corridor and dining room. you have to use ax, so wait before putting down the tree

i didn't use it, but when re-played again part two i found it in my inventory, as well as the lighter and the knife. i tried to put in the well, but a writing apperared: "i don't want to miss this coin" so i think it will be important in part three.

Reply

I loved the first part, so I was excited to see this installment... If it EVER loads, I'll let you know what I think... After fifteen minutes to get to 68%, I wouldn't recommend holding your breath. =\

Argh, too many accounts! Typekey, community.jayisgames.com, and now this one.

Anyway, I'm loving this game. The first one hurt my eyes, but the zoom on this makes it much nicer.

Not doing very well though.

Keep just wandering around the house. I've found the top piece of the heart, and am wandering about with a lighter, a book, a memo, a knife, a sphere, a dead frog, a newspaper, a bookmark, a spoon and a small key. Guy has big pockets.

Any ideas, oh wonderful people?

Big big help: new zoom function! It makes it so there really is no pixel hunting, particularly for those stuck in the first couple of rooms. (I did that... d'oh.)

By the time I got to the

third heart piece

it was getting very frustrating, but I hope that sense of frustration was done on purpose for the ending. The one time it's forgivable, LOL.

Well,
I had to take a couple of hours' break but came back to the game and finally finished it.

It was well worth the time spent on it, a good sequel to part I. Not easy, but not too hard to give up.

Good work, Rodrigo, looking forward to Part 3. Any idea around when it's due?

Having actually finished it, I can say that I loved it.

Still not sure what

the bit with the frog and the statue

was all about though. That didn't make sense to me, and I only got it because I was wandering around trying everything with everything.

Very mysterious though! Caused as many questions as it answered. Looking forward to the next part.

You need to move the large mirror over to the table - it will reflect under the table, then click the bar in the reflection.

@ Lune -

After you put the cabbage in the bowl, add the meat to mix. Leave for a bit, then come back. The dog will have taken care of his problem.

@ motc -

You have to be rich before you can get the credit card. To get rich, you have to make a wish.

What a great game!

I so do not agree with psychotronics review. (Sorry) I was frustrated a couple of times, yes, but the game had me continuing the search, and in the end I solved without help. The reason was that the game kept surprising me and switching directions. Easier games have made me give up, if they're not interesting, but I love this series, and it's very intense. Also there was clues from the beginning for the problems in the end, so I had a vague feeling to look for a creditcard, which was a cool subtle hint.
In general I loved the game.

Reply

Very good game once it FINALLY loaded properly. Thanks for all the tips, I was going crazy trying to figure out that door code.

The ending was kinda creepy lol.

Reply

I'm not even finished loading the game, but some comments made me ask this question: is the game really creepy? I don't like creepy games...

Reply

@ jojo -

The game takes some "normal" things and adds a psychological twist to them. "Creepy" is just the reaction of some - it's not horror, it's psychological thriller. And even the thrill is low-key, so don't let those comments keep you from playing.

Reply

Great game. Its nice to have a point and click/room escape game with an interesting story behind it. I can't wait for the climax of the series.

Reply

Thanks Wendy, I'm playing the game right now. I think the creepy aura comes from the stone walls (looks cold to me) and those dark corners..

Reply

o wow.. just finished it (using a few hints from this page, thanks guys), and it is creepy.. not scary-ugly-monster-pops-out-iut-of-nowhere creepy, but the plot.. can't wait for the 3rd one! Great game!

The game is taking forever to load. Taking 5 minutes just to get to the progress bar and then hanging at about 6%.

Any info on what to do to make it load? I've tried clearing cache, and tried Firefox and IE.

I think the site is lagging out due to bandwidth issues.

On Rodrigo's blog (http://trapped.rodrigoroesler.com/blog.php) he explains why people are having difficulty getting to the game. With sites like this and Nordinho etc. linking to it, the bandwidth has taken a hammering.

have found 2 "easter eggs" in both games.. have you?

One Coin for each game title

Rabbit Coin

Dark Coin

a little pixel hunting to find them ... just a little logic involved too, and you'll have to use an object in each game to find the "eggs."

Wow just finished the game without any help. Took me about a couple of hours. I was stuck for lots of time at the beginning but I once I got outside the house it was quite easy because the puzzles are much more logical. Another great thing is that there's no point and clicking at all. The story is so interesting, too bad we'll have to wait a couple of months to play the last part.

Howdy, all--I've already forgotten my new sign on info--ACK! Sorry, Jay--I've been recuping from foot surgery, so a little out of it. Guess I will have to get YET ANOTHER account! haha

So, I'm having the same problem as Melissa. Found the code easily, immediately knew where it needed to go, but it doesn't work. I've tried forwards and backwards--no go. What the heck? Is this a glitch?

Reply

Hey, sorry I forgot this in my earlier post. I know there is some buzz about the bandwidth on the host site, but I just went into my Firefox preferences and added 10M of memory to the cache. It still took about 5 minutes to load, but it did indeed load. Don't know if I just got lucky, or if having a little extra cache space helped.

Holy smokes.

I just finished the game. The ending was really "mind-boggling" if you know what I mean. Can't wait till the 3rd part of this game. It's all got my mind turning and looking at all the possibilities of what's going on. Thanks
Rodrigo :) Never had an "escape" game keep me this interested and entertained.

Reply

Wow, finally got it loaded, but I think I was waiting for it to load longer than I was actually playing the game! Nevertheless, amazing game, I love how the story is unfolding and I can't wait for the last installment!! Keep up the good work =)

It took me two hours to load this morning (I was doing other things while waiting), and... it was worth it. Great game.

And I thought the mix of ordinary and dream logic was just right, meaning that I only needed two hints to solve it; and sometimes when I did solve it I felt smart:

putting the mirror on the small table to find the rod under the long table [this was a little frustrating, since I thought I had it in the right place when it was in the light]

and

calling again for the credit card [and I felt dumb about not connecting this with wishing I was rich]

I really liked

throwing the little coin in the little well to get out of the sick room

Reply

Woohoo! finally solved it!! Took me about 1 and a half hours but it was fun!!!

important parts:the huge mirror can be use for 2 purposes..only the bank's number is important...throw all coins into the well....give the statue ice pick and frog and the frog comes to life....dog craps when he eats cooked veggies and meat.....frog tongue can reach the end of hole...attract with flies

Reply

I got the game to load, but all the text is missing. The guy is invisible too. The only way I can tell where he is is by his shadow when he moves.

the rabbit coin, the dark coin, and the labyrinth coin are probably going to be used in the last part to unlcok some kind of unnecicary bonus, or mabey they will be used to beat the game. i dont know.

to get the dark coin, attach the chain to the other wall. then you get a magic football. throw it at the wall in the first room and you get the dark coin!

Reply

Hmm, what's the game that's referred to when you throw the first coin you get in the well? Eternal Darkness? I wish I knew.

Oh, I got the plumber's business card, but I don't understand the "Student of all Sciences". Was there a book I was supposed to read or a video game I was supposed to play?

Matt Weiner January 8, 2008 8:43 AM

I think Anonymous is joking about the dark coin and the football -- here's how you get the dark coin:

There's a blank book in the room with the books (the one behind the chained door). It's the book at the top of the table. Set fire to it with the lighter. Then click on it twice.

By the way, if you just follow the walkthrough you miss some of the story, not only can you read a bunch of the books but

in the room behind the brick wall, click on the papers on the desk

(I missed that the first time through, and it's really important)

after you get the red key, read the diary (it's not exactly the way it was in the first game

and

when you're in the space with all the doors, try knocking on the door to the bedroom

It adds a lot to the experience.

Jay,

For the last two days I have tried to open Trapped Part 2: The Dark after having had a great experiance from the first Trapped.

However, the game seems to freeze at 1/2 67% every time. When I refresh the page, it stays at 67% and the loader at the bottom says "(1 item remaining)".

I have tried closing and re-opening, diconnecting and then redialling the internet and other basic variations, to no avail.

Any ideas? Not being able to access the next part of the story is killing me!

Thank You,

Fun game with nice graphics and the few frustrations, like

having to feed the dog the cabbage BEFORE the meat

were mostly enjoyable, except, as I've mentioned here before, I HATE when solutions are not at all logical. Every time I have to consult the walkthrough, I feel a little stupider :). And when it turns out to be totally random and illogical

(why would you put the frog on the statue? why the concrete sphere in battery acid? why flies in the hole in the wall, although then using the frog mades a sort of sense)

, I feel cheated.
Nonetheless, looking forward to part 3.

Thrown a coin in the well and said "I wish I were rich" yet? (You don't have to do anything to say "I wish I were rich," the game does it for you.)

Once you do that,

The bank should say that there's an account for you with lots of money in it.

There is absolutely no point to this game, awful and confusing story line....why the heck did you end up killing this guy....hard time keeping becca and whoever straight. Don't know why everyone is in the hospital. I mean i have a general sense (because the father died) but who cares? bottom line is the puzzles make absolutely no sense. its a bunch of clicking around. Go left, go right...enter this room, enter that room...THUNDER LIGHTENING THUNDER THUNDER THUNDER. I muted my computer just so i could complete it. Waste of time. I kept on expecting somthing special to happen and it just went from one lame, confusing puzzle to the next. Thats the proble with these puzzle games that arn't professionally tested....THEY DON'T make Sense, thats the bottom lin, nothing beats real world puzzles, and they just don't recreate the feeling you get out of doing things in your own house/car/life. I can see what happens....the designer gets an idea for the puzzle in his head and works it out so that it makes sense to him. Problem with that is that it only makes sense to that person, its only logical to the creator. I have to give the game its due props for being challenging. BUt uggh, way to one dimensional, boring puzzles over and over, matching pieces with no rhyme or reason....hiring a writer might have paid off for this particular project. Anyone agree? no way this game deserves a 4.8....whats wrong with you people?

They said in the walkthrough

that the positions on the notches from the light of the carved crystal would change somehow and it didn't.

Also the thing about the

hospital room turning into the ladder room

was creepy.
I like the part when you

wish for a thingamajig and you get it.

That was funny.
By the way I do not know where

to use the axe for the Rabbit Coin.

(By the way, the way I typed that text reminds me of a certain Jewish prayer that I forgot the name of.)

While I've played most of the escape games listed here, I kept skipping over the Trapped series because, irrationally, the 3D perspective seemed really unappealing to me. Once I'd played through everything, I was jonesing for a good escape fix so I finally decided to give it a try.

Rodrigo, White Rabbit and The Dark are easily two of the best games in the genre. Just enough story to give me a reason to play, puzzles that are hard enough to be challenging, but logical enough to make walkthroughs almost unnecessary (ok, I confess, I needed help figuring out how to find the metal bar) attractive, immersive - a true 10 of a game.

For anyone who needs help with the five rings on the wall:

There are five rings on the wall, yes? There are also ten lines running through the rings. Each ring corresponds to one dial on the door lock, and each line corresponds to one number on each dial. You can tell which ring is which because the dials have various ring sizes next to them. Each ring has a little boxy thing on it, and each boxy thing is on a line. The boxy things are telling you which number corresponds to each dial.
Example: If the little boxy thing is on the top line and the biggest circle, then set the dial with the biggest ring next to it to 0.

Hope that wasn't terribly confusing!

Great game. I can't say I found any of it illogical.

Battery acid eats concrete --

if you don't know that, you should (high school science, real world experience, take your pick).
As for the

flies in the hole

, the game totally clues you in to this.

When you place the frog on the table near the flies, he tries to catch them but cannot. The game says his aim is bad, but "his tongue is very long". Everything else you try to stick in the hole is "not long enough".

5.0 / 5.0 for sure. I've gotta go play the 1st one now!

WHAT IS THE MAIN STORYLINE OF THIS GAME?!?!
When I played The White Rabbit, I got this wisely thought out, mysterious storyline that left a terrible(yet awesome) cliffhanger, but when I played The Dark, BAM! BAM! BAM! All of these answers that make me feel stupid when I don't understand them pop out at me! Then I feel mad at myself for not understanding the story, making me madder 'cause I'm anxious to know!
Please type out the story as smpily as you can so I can enjoy the next chapter in this wonderful series of games.
THANKS AHEAD!

Hey, I'm a Brazilian who speaks Portuguese and I can end the game using the spoilers. Why those who speak English can't? Read again if you do not understand the first time.

About the carved crystal puzzle. Here is a tip I got from another forum that finally gave me the answer to the puzzle. It drove nuts until I read this.

The smallest circle on the door represents the innermost circle on the diagram, so put the dial in the same position. Then continue in the same manner.

@Lacrosse lover :

It's not at the mirror . Click the table opposite the mirror and they will tell you that you found it .

what a brilliant game.

dont forget about the coin:

found from the plant

there is a metal piece:

found in the sealed sphere

to unseal the sphere:

use the spilled batery acid

to end the game:

be a murderer!

After step 5. Pick up magnifying glass on the table at back. Take small coin and small key from the model of the house. Enter the back room- the key is used automatically.

My key just don't open automatically. even i use the small key on it. It reads: It doesn't fit.
Is there more than 1 key or bugs in game?

I am having a really hard time so if you could just post the ring numbers in order from top to bottom, please, that would be great! Thank you!

click the table that's being reflected for metal bar

The thing about

Using lightning to resurrect the frog isn't that much farfetched, since frogs can appear "dead" (no heart beat, cold body temp, etc.) but is only in a metabolic state similar to hibernation.

I'm not sure if that is correct, though, but it does seem like a stretch when there are no other hints pertaining to it. /geek

Ok, i feel really dumb because i can't figure this out but on the walkthrough, on step 22 it says "ring on brick wall" what does this mean? and also it says to put the metal bar on the water mill but it won't let me because it says it would ruin the chain. Please help!!!!
