JayThe ShrineA missile is launched and it is up to you to solve the mysteries and rituals of The Shrine and save the world.

In this amazing and well-produced point-and-click adventure by Aztec, you will encounter lots of items to find, hidden rooms, and various contraptions to activate and control.

Move the mouse around each scene to locate positions to click. The mouse cursor will turn into a hand to alert you that something may be there. This helps prevent the pixel hunting frustration found in many Flash point-and-click games. Instead, the difficulty in this game comes from using the items you find to solve puzzles and reveal hidden clues about the true nature of this mysterious place.

Although a walkthrough will surely be posted here soon, do yourself a favor and don't give up on this excellent adventure. It isn't often a game of this quality appears on the Web to play for free, and there is a deep, rewarding experience contained within it to keep you challenged for at least an hour or two. Unfortunately there is no way to save your progress in this otherwise exceptional game.

Walkthrough Guide

(Please allow page to fully load for spoiler tags to be functional.)

FULL WALKTHROUGH:

  1. From where you start, click on the statues to the left and right and get both orbs.

  2. Click the bell (the yellow ball with a rope hanging down). Ring it three times; something will fall out.

  3. Go back to where you started. Click on the brown box in the center of the screen. Click it until you can grab the locked box underneath. Also, grab the two rocks to the left of the box.

  4. Go back to where you started, and click the pinkish tile on the far right until it is out of the way; leave it.

  5. Turn right and grab the crowbar.

  6. Go back to the start and into the temple by pressing the top ninja knife. Move the purple cushion; leave the hole for now.

  7. Use the two stones you found on the candle. You will then see something shining to the right of the large cabinet. There will be a key. Take it.

  8. Go back and turn left to find a chest. Open both drawers, and grab the tape.

  9. Go back and click the hole in the floor. Use the tape on the hole. Grab the key, and open the locked box you have to obtain a green bead.

  10. Go back and turn right. Grab the chisel.

  11. Go back and look at the ceiling. In the ceiling, there should be a board with a notch in it (it's in the far left corner). Click it to get a more close-up view. Use the crowbar on it twice. Click the hole.

  12. Use the crowbar on the large rock four times. Click the hole to find a lens. Take the lens.

  13. Go back and click the black and white screen to find a hammer underneath. Take it; this will come in handy several times.

  14. Go down to the main floor of the temple, and click the floorboard that fell. Grab the doll underneath.

  15. Click the brown statue's right hand (which would be on your left). Place the doll in it.

  16. Click the bottom ninja knife to turn around; you should see the main entrance to the temple, a red arch, two holes on either side, and two white circles on either side of the doorway. Hit them both with the hammer twice. Click the right hole and grab the gun. Leave the left hole for now.

  17. Turn around again, and use the gun on the candle you lit at the beginning of the game. This will light the fuse.

  18. Turn right and shoot the black metal plate five times. Click to find the USB port and a clue for later in the game (I will give you the code; you don't have to worry about the clue).

  19. Go to where you first started and turn left. Water should be flowing; grab the shiny object (a key) in the well.

  20. Go back and use the chisel twice on the dirt where the pink tile used to be. Click the hole and grab the bow. By the man's elbow, you should see a crescent-shaped shadow. Use your hammer on it thrice; grab the sword underneath.

  21. Go to the main screen and click just to the left of the left statue. Aww, cute kitty. :) Use the hammer on the tile the cat's head is laying on twice. Grab both the handles.

  22. Go back and click just to the right of the right statue. Open the box with the new key; grab the fuse and turn on both switches.

  23. Go back into the temple, and turn around until you're facing the door back outside. You should see two holes in the wall; place the handles here. Turn them both once.

  24. Click the red arch, preferably in the middle of the large red-and-black bar. You should see a white circle. Use the bow on the white circle you see.

  25. Go outside. Notice the two statues have moved. Click them both, and grab the cylinder and the cone.

  26. Go back into the temple and turn both the handles. Go back outside.

  27. Use the cylinder and the cone on the two statues.

  28. Go back into the temple and turn both handles again. Leave the statues there.

  29. Click the left hole in the wall. Insert the fuse.

  30. Go to the cabinet by the brown statue, in the main screen of the temple. Place the sword, and the green bead in the tray, and the lens in the lower circle. Go back to the main part, click the black square that just opened, and press the gray button. A door will open to a super-awesome machine.

  31. Place the green orb in the left hole, and the blue in the right.

  32. To the bottom-right of the machine, there should be a slot. Place the USB port in the slot.

  33. Click the screen below the machine. The code is 7641.

And you're done! :)

On a personal note, I'm so excited I finished it all on my own. I've been a huge fan of these kind of games forever, but I've never finished one all by myself. And I made my first walkthrough, too! :D

The black roll that was in the top drawer of the dresser. Is it duct tape?

Yes, it is, FishyFred.

About pixel-hunting (in general):

It's not just about whether the cursor changes; it's about whether you can tell that certain things are interesting or not. Adventure games that suffer from pixel-hunting aren't just making the size of the 'interesting notification' bounding box too small; they're also making it difficult for the player to tell that the area they should be paying attention to was intended to be interesting at all. Making the area of notification larger helps, and I guess in this game suffices well enough to substitute, but it makes for a much better game IMO to design things so that it's visually obvious what you can and can't interact with as well as obvious via use of the interface.

Sorry, just had to get that out of my system...

Reply

ok, so I've:

raised the arch, and opened the back room

I've got:

some kind of blue roll that I found in the switchbox on the side of the shrine, and I can't work out what to do with it

They better get someone else to do something about that pesky missile because I'm stumped!

nice game, kept me going for nearly an hour - at first I was worried about playing another game with a language barrier but no problems whatsoever!

hints:

use the hammer EVERYWHERE!

and for that elusive code...

note down all symbols with their corresponding images and think of them in terms of being on a clock face

Reply

Rich, do you have:

the hammer? You'll need to use the hammer in a variety of places. Once one of those places is revealed it will become obvious what to do with that item.

Reply

No matter how hard I try,

I can not move the cat. I have used the hammer a dozen times and it isn't working.

It's ok. Leave the cat sleeping. She doesn't move during all the commotion. :)

ok - getting a little frustrated now - I have what looks like:

a green carrot, a green tube, and a rifle, can't work out what to shoot, or what to do with the green things

Also:

I'm guessing the black space above the symbols in the back room, is where a code would go, but how do you put one in?

Reply

ok, im well and truly stuck

ive raised the arch, found the gun and hidden mechanism thing, found the scrolls, but dont know how to open the box outside, or how to open the draws

Reply

Rich - you're off about where to input the code. It's not where you're thinking.

If you have:

the cone and the tube, then I'll bet you left the lion statues up in the air. ;)

Reply

Hm...you say the hammer is really important, but I can't find it anywhere!

Reply

OK so.
I've:

Put the tube and spiral on the lions

But now i'm stuck again!

Reply

Steve - you need

keys to open those items and there are 3 in this game:

  1. On the right side of the shrine in the main room of the temple.

  2. At the bottom of the pool of water near the leaking pipe.

  3. Beneath the 'well' outside.

i found a what i think might be a hidden item

at the screen where it shows the shrine i was using the tab key and it highlighted a tiny square to the left of the grey statue thing it leads to a screen with a blonde guy holding a green square and it says something in japanese, but nothing get added to your inventory

Reply

I think im at a similar stage as Adam

ive re-raised the lions after adding the bits to them, ive unlocked all the locked doors, placed the orbs in the secret room, and "activated" the gun, but am completely stuck now.

Reply

Here's what I have up until now.

Can't seem to activate the laser cooling system, seems that you need to do something with statue's and the switches.

Spoilers up until where I'm at...

Main screen!

Click on the box in front of you several times till it shifts!
- get smallbox

Click on the statues!
- get the green and blue ball

Click the second (from top) floor panel several times and leave it for now.

ring the bell several times until something drops
- get firestones down by the chest

Proceed to the right

get steelbar

Go back to the main screen and press up (to the temple)

remove the purple cushion

Light candle (right corner) with firestones
- get key (next to the shrine in the middle)

click ceiling board on the left top corner
- (use crowbar/iron bar)

Click screen several times
- get hammer!
- use crowbar on the rock several times
- get magnifying glass

Go back down
move to the right

- get chisel

click down

use key on chest
- get ducktape
- read note (doens't really make sense)

Move back to the right (watching the stonedude and the shrine)

notice the hole
- use tape on leak
- get key
- use key on smallbox

Put the leavy looking thing and the magnifying glass on shrine

go back to mainscreen

- use chisel on durt several times
- go down cave
- get bow
- use hammer on left side of the painting
- get sword (put on the shrine)

go back up and to the leftside of the temple(next to the statue)

- stroke the cat several times
- isn't she cute :D:D
- now use hammer on the plateau on the left side 2 times(just under the cat)
- get handles

go back to main screen now go left

- get key! (down by the water)

Back to mainscreen

go to the rightside of the temple (on the right side of the statue)
- use key on electricbox
- get fuse

Go back and up to the temple (with the stonedude)

- put sword on shrine
- open door by pressing grey (purple) button
- click the ceiling panel
- get doll
- click left hand of stonedude
- put in doll

turn around facing the arc

put in handles on the sides (left and right just try)
- turn them (will move statues in main screen up
- click on arc
- use bow on the circle

go back to mainscreen

click on both pillars
- get tube
- get pointy tube
- go back up and turn handles (making the statues come down again)
- go to mainscreen
- click on statue and put tube in right statue
- put pointytube in left statue

go back up to temple (with stonedude)

enter cooling room
- put blue ball right
- put green ball left

Allright that's it. I've tried almost everything with the statues and the switches. Also couldn't figure out what to do with the fuse and the steelplate in temple.
Guess the papersheet in the cabinet in the temple on the left side (laser cooling system) has something to do with it.

Makers put in a little joke?? (mainscreen) just a little bit under the to the left arrow is a small area where you can click. Dunno if it's worth translating or if it's just a joke.

Reply

Rich - your code is almost right. How are you coming up with the last digit?

Hint about the black plate:

Since there's no screwdriver in the game and the plate looks bolted on pretty well, perhaps more desperate brute-force measures are called for?

Reply

the code is:

7641

Reply

Some help.....

Use the gun on the candle above the shrine in the main room. You see in the inventory a flame at the gun. Now you can fire the gun at the black bolted panel.

Use the usb-stick on the right off the black panel in the cooling room. The whole system should start up now.

I guessing though that the shotgun is inside.

Looking for the gun?

Have you used the hammer everywhere?

No, you must not have used it in the main room of the shrine.

Enter the shrine, do an about face. Use the hammer.

If you lighted up the eyes of the statue then turn around.

There are 2 markings on the wall, one on the left and one on the right off the door opening. Smash them with the hammer.

ive noticed something, and im not sure it means anything but on both the first and second floor of the shrine when you move your mouse over the white curtain thing on the right side it turns to the finger thing, but nothing happens when you click on it

Reply

As RuDeF pointed out above you need to use the gun first on the

candle to power it up. If you haven't lit the candle yet

Use the rocks on the candle first.

Reply
tenkuchima June 17, 2007 7:57 PM

i figured out what to do with the rifle

you have to first "activate" it by using the rocks that fell out of the bell you can tell if it worked because there will be a little flame icon on the rifle, then you use it on the black panel on the right wall of the shrine

Hi,

I'm confused by the code - I can see symbols but have no idea how to relate them to numbers...

There are some on the roof, in a circle which could relate to the clock face that elv mentioned earlier. But I haven't seen them anywhere else, and they don't match the ones under the code input panel. Those ones, I have seen - but I don't know how to get numbers for! Well, the one on the 'sun lady', I guess you could say her hand was pointing at 7, which matches what Jay said, but I'd like to understand!

This is the first time I've had to ask for help, normally someone has already answered my question, so thanks. And thanks for this site, it's a little too brilliant - I never get any work done after I've been here, so I have to leave it until last thing... :-)

Reply

Dungar,

It seems that, according to other posts, there is a code. No, it is not in Japanese. You see the hints on certain objects.

look in the laser room. At the bottom center there are 4 symbols. Where did you see them before?

Picture of Sun God. (upstairs) Picture of the god in cave. (where bow and sword are) Right side of chest. (with the laser chart and where tape was)

I can't find the fourth symbol, but I'm sure they are 4 numbers to the code.

Hope that helps.

Seems like a lot of work just for

a missle defence system. I'd have thought one would WANT to activate it quickly and easily... :)

Reply

I got everything and solved the game using the code given above, but how did you get the last digit? The only place that symbol appears is

in the hole outside,

and the only number related to that is from the

note saying he fought an eight-headed snake or dragon or something. The clock thing doesn't make sense because the symbol is at three o'clock, and there's no center point to be able to tell.

Question regarding the rifle. I've followed the comments from Jay and RudeF about

using the hammer to break the white seals on either side of the interior temple door,

@Todd -

The key thing with the code is to think of a clock. When you find the USB port, there is a clue: "direction that right hand indicates". Underneath the machine in the back room are four strange symbols - these are all parts of the code.
Inside the temple, the red box with two drawers has the third symbol on it's left (your right) side, and even gives you the number - 4. So we have _ _ 4 _.
The woman with the sun behind her on the top floor of the temple has the first symbol on her dress. This is where the clue comes in. Her right hand (your left) is pointing to where a 7 would be on a clock - so the code so far is 7 _ 4 _.
When you put both fuses in the box and turn on the switches, go outside. You will notice two beams of light directed at the roof. Click that spot, and you will notice the second symbol at the very bottom. Again, think a clock - this would be the number 6. So the code is 7 6 4 _.
When you dig a hole under the tile, there is a man with his sword raised, and the last symbol to his left (your right). The clue comes in again here. His right hand (your left) is pointing not straight up, but a bit to the side - that would be 1.
And that's why the code is 7641. :)

Thanks Metanaito, I got all the other numbers just fine so i just guessed to get the last number. Then i read a few comments also having the same problem as me. Well hopfully anyone else wondering where the last number came from could read your comment. Thanks again.

This game is very strange. Fairly good for an escape-ish type game. Is 1:02 the maximum amount of time it can record?

Reply

1:02 the maximum? No, I think that's very unlikely since my 'score' when I finished was 2:56. (I like to take my time.) =)

Am I the only idiot in the world that can't get the chest of drawers open? I click on the handles, nothing other than the handles waving around. Same thing if I click on the drawers themselves. It's anticlimactic at this point, but have I offended ye gods of duct tape?

I'm in the screen where I presume the pw goes, but can't figure out how to enter it?!?!!

I really appreciated the color coding- things that were the same color as the things you were supposed to use them with--although at first I was getting it subliminally.
Great game & possible to do on one's own.

For some reason it won't let me put in the passcode on the black screen?

Ok so ive been working my head off with this game and i reached what i suppose its the last part, but cant do it, how am i supposed to work out the...

code? i mean, i tried every combination i thought it made sense with all the symbols and stuff but none is working, any ideas?

Please will anyone explain the unorthadox ending to me. I don't get it! Gaaah... O_o

Reply

Anonymouse--you simply must find the 'key' to your problem. ;-)

Reply

LostAlley and Cathy - you'll know it when you see the interface to enter the code. If you're confused, then it's probably not time to enter it yet.

Moro - the ending is the conclusion to the cut scene in the beginning where you saw the missile taking off. What is so unorthodox about that?

Reply

i just can't enter the code. AHHH it is frustrating.

Reply

I can't put the code !!!

Reply

Oh, I got it ! you just have to make sure you turn on both switches before you can enter the code, it's important to see they look on and off the same.

How do you use the stones on the candle?
I try but the stones just go back.
Can someone help me?

How do you use the gun?

Reply

Yoso - keep trying. Perhaps you're trying in the wrong place?

Just drag the stones over the candle and let go.

Kelly - you have to fire it up first. (hint hint)

I have the same problem. Handles just wave but the drawers don't open. Nor does the gun appear when I use the hammer on the spots on the wall.

I think this game is broken :/

Reply

@Lixivium -

You have to find the key first. Have you lit the candle? If not, have you rung the bell at the beginning of the temple three times? You will find what you need to light the candle if you do that.

Help! I have almost finished, I have worked out the code but I don't know where to enter it?! Tough game!

Reply

Never mind...I got it!

make sure the on/off switches outside are in 'on' position click on black panel under big weird machine behind hidden panel and move the mouse around a bit! The code pad should appear!

Not like I spent an hour trying to play this game or anything!!!!

If you are having trouble entering the code at the end...I think the statues need to be in the correct position?

oh well..

i think this is the less intuitive game i have ever seen..

i normally love those escape game, but this one.. sooooo complicated and anti-logical that i didn't really like it..

i had to follow the walkthrough most of the time..

(btw, i really don't understand how you guys find all this out.. you have way more patience than me.. lol)

thanks for the walkthrough, otherwise i would still be there, thinking that it's not really fun.. lol

okay, I beat the game only looking at the walkthrough one at the end for the code, but I don't get the end. What did you do and what was the purpose????

Reply

How and where do I enter the code?

Reply
Canadian Enchantress August 17, 2007 10:32 PM

TaladorPhoenix, after you input the code, did you press the arrow (on the keypad)?
What you did:

...was save the day!

The purpose was:

...to prevent the missile from striking the shrine.
There was a cool cut scene movie at the end. :)

Meme
You enter the code by

using a numerical keypad that activates once you click on the active black screen, bottom center, between the places you just placed the green and blue orbs.
* Once you enter the code (see walkthrough, top-of-page) - be sure to use the keypad arrow to enter the code for a cool cut scene movie

Try the direct link to the SWF:

Or, use the Japanese page:
http://aztec.sakura.ne.jp/jinja/INTERFACE2.html

It actually uses the same SWF as the English page does.

If anyone is interested (this knowledge actually helped me a bit, as I knew immediately where to place certain objects):

The painting behind the white screen, upstairs, is of the sun goddess Amaterasu, mentioned in the note one may find downstairs. The mirror, bead, and sword are traditionally kept within Shinto shrines, and are her symbols.

Waheyy ^^ Just completed by myself =D

Great site! I've been playing "escape" games here all week. I've also appreciated the hints every now and then, so.... I figured I would leave my first one.

A better explanation for the code (it actually makes complete sense with no guessing)!!!!

There are 4 mythological figures mentioned in the bits of paper. Each of them has a symbol and each of them is making a pointing gesture with the right hand.
The clue on the rock with the USB drive asks which direction the right hand points. (Knowing Japanese is not neccessary, it says the same thing as the English).
On the roof of the shrine, there are symbols laid out that look sort of like a clock. So, the way to interpret the pointing gesture could be as a clock position.
In order of apprearance:

  1. Ohkuninushi is the statue in the shrine. His symbol is between his feet and (after placing Sukuna-Bikona in his hand) he points to 4 o'clock.

  2. Amaterasu is upstairs painted on the wall. Her symbol is on her dress and she points to 7 o'clock.

  3. Sukuna-Bikona is the little doll. Her symbol is also on her dress and she points down to 6 o'clock (but only after she is in Ohkuninushi's hand).

  4. Susanowo is in the hole in the ground. His symbol is painted on the wall and he points to 1 o'clock.

The idea that Sukuna-Bikona's symbol stands for 6 is confirmed by its position on the clock on the roof. It is at the six o'clock position. None of the other symbols (3,9,12) appear anywhere else.

On the final machine, there are 4 familiar symbols below the keypad. In order they are Amaterasu, Sukuna-Bikona, Ohkuninushi, Susanowo.
7 6 4 1

I must be a complete moron. I know that when I

ring the bell three times a ruby is supposed to come out

but I have been sat here doing it for a while now and still nothing. :(

Reply

hi "fool"

the problem you are having is that

when you ring the bell three times, the firestarter rocks (you said "rubies", not exactly, but close) fall down to the ground and you can only see them if you retreat to the previous screen.

Reply

Incidentally, while this probably won't help anyone who's read through all this, you can identify items by dragging them onto where it says "Check".

how to do number 21... i got really stuck there......... help...

Reply

Why the Code

The clue to the code is in the metal panel. And then shining on the roof after everything is activated. The "right hand" refers both to the right hands of the figures, and the hands on a clock.

Some of the codes are pixel hunts (like the one on the bureau), others are duh moments (like the big statue *and* the mini statue inside the shrine both have symbols), but they all match up to the symbols over the ice/water reservoir in the secret room. Hence, code.

@jblues and JIGguest

Do you have something to break it with? The cat's practically lying on the whole stone... yes, break that one.

@Taisuke

They're the same color. And they're HUGE. It's too bad items don't come with proportions...

That was hard, but fun.
