Yes, similar, Span, and yet this is a browser-based Flash game and Gunbound was downloadable for Windows only. I've updated the review to mention it, though, as well its predecessor, Scorched Earth.

Very fun game. It takes a bit of a mind for vector physics, but once you figure that out . . . whoooo! Beat those Blooz!

I can't tell you how many hours were wasted on the awesomeness that was Scorched Earth when I was younger. We probably took it a lot more seriously than it should have been. It was on the scale of Command & Conquer or something like that back then for us, haha. Scorched Earth is still one of my top games. Shoot, I still play it every now and then if I can ever find a working download of it. I can't try this one yet due to some very strange computer issues...can't wait to see it.

I played against someone called "Jayisgames", Purple-blue body, green head... We had a duel, after the other teammembers were killed: 1 vs 1, he had 32 hp, i had 61... Hope you enjoy the dirt you are biting...

Arnos - I believe getting kicked for not meeting the minimum requirements means that the server was experiencing lag on your end, and had to drop you because your computer wasn't keeping up. That has happened to me a couple of times when I choose to spectate after getting eliminated.

And it's not surprising that I was in the game you played, as I have been playing a lot of this game today(!). Oh, I guess I should get some real work done. ;)

This is a very fun game, but I am having problems with it.

Whenever I log in, I'm always at rank 884, have done 9 matches, overall score 7555, 19% accuracy, and my weapon of choice is always 100% normal. I should have very different stats then that.

Also, when I play a game, I can use normal, roller, and cluster, but when I play a second game, I can only use normal. If I log out then log in (which I would still have the exact same stats), I can use my three attacks again for my first game, then I can only use normal in the next games.

Am I doing something wrong or is the game messed up?

I don't know, Tom, that sounds completely odd to me. I have not experienced anything like you described after many, many battles.

Not sure what to suggestion besides the usual: clear your cache; reinstall the most recent Flash player.

You might also try just creating a new character and see if that helps at all.

Extremely addicting, I recognize some names here. Seems kind of easy to climb the ranks though. I wouldn't worry too much about the "kicked for performance" thing, seems to be almost random or pops up after the game has been running for a long time. I've gotten it a few times and I have a gaming rig with a cable connection.

i've gotten the kicke for preformace thing once or twice, but both times it was while i was spectating.

btw, awesome game jay. you get kicked if you spend 2 shots without shooting. The loading times are pretty crappy, though, and I wish you could type openly without using those crappy lines.

Also, anyone know when the weapons get unlocked? I have them all now, but I don't know why. And, lol, I just noticed that with more points your creature actually grows bigger. Super! XD

Well, I can't help but feel that the brick is a bit cheap. It does 90 damage on a hit and isn't that hard to aim. I've been racking up points by just suicide rushing the other team and knocking them all out with a straight line throw. The brick and roller are my most used by far.

A lot of the fun is gone with no player interaction. I'm connecting to games in a split second now, though, but my accuracy and preferred weapons do not seem to update. My rank is going up and each game seems to be counting for two matches. I hope it goes back to how it was previously.

The only thing that is different is the message menu has been removed. My guess is because the servers are really getting hammered and by reducing the chat messages overall traffic through the server is reduced significantly.

Yeah, the other stats are going up too. I suppose I've just played so much they don't change as much with each match. I'm Rank 66 right now. Do you know how old this game is Jay?

It's very simple and fun. It's visually interesting, too. Not just the creatures and backgrounds, even the lines that show where the projectiles have been thrown are interesting to look at, too. I've also been humming it's catchy, repeated song.

To those experiencing problems with the game, like lag, or wierd game behavior, getting disconnected for not meeting requirements...

I noticed that Firefox tends to cause this a lot, Internet explorer seems a lot more capable of playing the game.

p.s. the accuracy rating is bogus, it is based on how many hits out of the rounds you are in and I think it is capped at the point you get access to all the weapons (brick being the final one).

I think cheney faced bang may be on to something. I've been expecting my accuracy to rise for some time now as I've gotten better, but it's been stuck on 42% even though I've like tripled the number of games I've played and swear I make hits more often.

Has anyone who has played a lot noticed their accuracy % change at all?

The system is a bit wonky. It'll eventually update your stats, and sometimes you won't be able to tell.

I went through a lot of games before I realized I was able to use the other weapons.

it's exellent. 50 matches and got to 150,000 points and 86% acuracy. its easy once you know which weapon is best for certain stages.

Does anyone remember the nintendo game Worms? The little pink bits of pixels that yelled help me when they died, and you could do stuff like kamikaze, flame thrower, and jackhammer. Zwok immediately made me think of that game. I'm chird, greinz. I'm trying to get my sister to make an avatar so we can beat each other up online. ^_^ I've been checking out your site for a couple years, Jay (started back in the day, when the site was a part of RIT) and it just keeps getting better!!!

New features! Search feature on the high score page to find your name. Unfortunately, they also expanded the top 300 leet to the top 3000. Probably because anyone that starts playing the game now will basically never get to the top 300, unless he or she is a college student on break. Summer break. Because most people in the top 300 seem to keep playing except I noticed that zedzedzed stopped at 6477 and that has been it for months. Green Kitty I see you have surpassed our former No. 1. Congrats.

And I was playing the new stages today. I think they are designed very poorly. Not much strategy because they are either too flat or way too mountainous. That new weapon spannerz is very overpowered (takes about 60 off, and the ball splits into three! Cheapo attack, I'd say). Even the background graffics are too stylized: it does not have the charm of the old stages.

Yuck, if this is where Zwok is headed, I'd rather not play (but I probably still will). Hope y'all like it though.

Well, our ghost (!)Ckalimero made more than 550.000 pts today, more than 200 games and i played him 1 time (one victory of course ! haha). Only one time...However i have played a lot today. I really don't understand.

He is just a good player but not a very good player. Lurch, Wazzakan, Sentiant, Arktur, Red Corpse and even our dear Kitty are much better than him !He must have his small secret...Frankly, how can one explain such score with if few parties? With a so low precision ?

To finish, a bit disappointed by new Zwok. Scenes is not terrible (mountains !)and the new weapon does not make in delicacy. Farewell strategy!

I played two games just right now and all the balance of old Zwok is almost completely gone. Even for an Overlord, all the weapons had a purpose, including "normal." The new spannerz is crazy because the center span ball still is on target, but it adds two shots, all doing 60 damage. It's the new favorite weapon for people who can't aim out there and pray they are lucky.

Additionally, the new maps are unbalanced, especially the one that has one high hill on one side and the rest of it is flat. The two tall mountains one is designed also designed horribly because movement is almost pointless. And the third one I've encountered is similarly stupid. When y'all play it, you'll see.

That's just my rant, but I'm disappointed. I'll play a few matches here and there, but this version isn't my style. Best of luck to everyone.

Yeah it seems like much more of a free for all. I loved doing the pinpoint brick toss on some noob as they stared in disbelief at the accuracy. I know they have that reaction, because when I was new and someone did it to me I was like "no stinking way" lol. Now some of the strategy and mind reading is taken out, because you have the spanner, which is like a cluster hyperbomb. It is still funny, but different. I like the new chat messages.

Well the game is/was highly addictive....
For some reason or another my usernames no longer work. It says "Login Incorrect" (does anyone know why?) Even though I did notice more players had the "Lazy" nicnames today... perhaps it's a glitch? Perhaps they fianlly seen my nicname in the database and realised it's not appropiate? (highly unlikely though) because my other nicname that I use is "Roenick" and that no longer exists... I don't play to become #1 or even #500, I just play this game because it's enjoyable...! (to let you all know) I had 0% lol... I've played 1200 games or so.. Can't log in now to see how many... but was roughly there... All I want to know is WHY my usernames no longer work.... Have fun everyone, and really hope to play using my regular nicname again soon... or I'll try to make a nicname with "Rob" in it.

Zwok is such a fantastic game. Why did they ever even consider removing the chat function? So much is lost. there is no communication. No passing on of skill, no development of the game. I've played Gunbound and other games that are similar. None comes close to the simple, uncluttered majesty of Zwok. Who are the creators? Why don't they care about the leader-board being overrun by cheaters?

True zwok strategists know that good players have high averages. I average over 1300 per round. But averaging 5000+ points per match is not possible unless you play the symmetrical big bowl over and over again. It is the only map where you can score multiple hits for consistent scores in the 3000-4000 range.

Is there a way that cheaters can somehow play this one map repeatedly?

I've found a little but useful bug:
After your first winnig match if you close your net connection, then reconnect, there will be no messages but much more faster gaming zest.

I play Zwok and I like it. But I have some qeustions. First how do I get the spannerz? I just figure I could use it. How? And second you said that in order to kill people you might need to sacrifice yourself or your team members. But theres this guy who is a blooz and he looks like a skeleton. And heres what. He on the first move turns around and throws spannerz at u and kills u on one shot! HE KILLS HIS OWN PEOPLE! FOR NO REASON! SO I REALLY NEED THOSE SPANNERZ!

The reasons that the green player kills his own teammates are two-fold:

1. He doesn't wish to be damaged by his noob teammates who are sure to hit him at least once in the round.

2. If he is playing for high-score, and not just for fun, then he doesn't want his noob teammates to accidentally steal his kills (I say accidentally because noobs primarily hit enemies without any real forethought...they just point, click, and pray). By killing his own team, he has the whole shooting gallery to himself.

Here's an analogous scenario:

- you and a another guy are bobbing for apples.
- the goal is to get the most apples to win the big cash prize.
- the rules say that you are legally allowed to handcuff the other guy to the wall so that he can't even reach the apples.
- you decide to do so.
- you get the most apples and win the prize
- the other guy gets nothing because he is handcuffed to the wall.

In essence, a noob (and really any player on your team)
poses a threat. An experienced zwok player will kill (handcuff) everyone in his way because his teammates are very likely going to screw up his game. Zwok is NOT, I REPEAT NOT A TEAM GAME! There is no penalty for killing teammates, so why not do it every time?

Conclusion:

There should be a penalty for hitting teammates.

The accuracy rating kicks in after a lot of initial battles so you'll be at 0% for a while and you'll have the spanners weapon option before the accuracy rating is updated. I have noticed some other things as well:

- Since you're playing internationally sometimes the server(s) lag and it's usually just one or two players and clears up quickly.

- I don't think I've ever played bots and I'm like still in the top ten. Speaking of which my average score is around 2000 per game although with the spanners weapon that has gone down as they are so overpowered you kill in only one or two hits. I've done a few games scoring over 5000 and 6000 but they are rare (and kind of boring).

- Sometimes the servers take away the chat function as they are simply running too slow. And then zowee does the game move!

- Related to the chat feature I've experienced a bug as well. Everything seems to work fine in Firefox on my Mac but sometimes if I log in using Mozilla the chat feature is gone and I'm mostly playing newbies (NOOBs) although not always. And I can move faster and a little farther although the game is boring as I tend to win most of those rounds.

- The cheaters. Yes, they suck. Just make a small list of the ones while you're playing and leave that round if it gets to you. Generally if you see someone (from either team) move an extra long distance you know they hacked the system. Another version is you've killed them and phantom shots come at you. A newer version is cheaters who hack the system and set themselves to stay a small (newby-like) zwok rather than getting larger with the weapons upgrades.

- Teammates who kill their own. They suck too. I can forgive the newbies (just move away from them - we were all new once.) But in addition to the comments from hagbreath some of the teammates who kill are just vengeful or even be from the other team thinking the are doing something helpful - they aren't. I don't support killing your teammates for any reason except if they are attacking you and frankly I would probably just leave that round and not give them the attention they seem to need so badly. This is a good strategy for all the cheaters. Send a comment "nice shot" and leave. If they are trying to get points let them get them from someone else; if they are trying to cheat to win who cares. I'm here to kick some greinzwok butt!

Zwok Scoring Tips Everyone Should Know:

A bouncing ball is worth more than a rolling ball!
This goes for:

- Roller (yes, the roller can be bounced slightly and with great effectiveness)
- Cluster (the cluster acts exactly the same as a bouncer until it pops)
- Bouncer (by far the most useful weapon in your arsenal
I use bouncer about 60% of the time)

This actually has to do with the velocity at which the ball is traveling when it makes contact with an enemy. Bottom line, the faster the ball is going, the more points the hit will be worth.

When lobbing shots into ravines, many players make a point of aiming so that the ball ends up sliding perfectly down the hill and into the ravine occupied by the enemy players. This may look very cool, but it is strategically ineffective. The ideal ravine lob should always be attempted with a bouncer (never a roller) and should ideally be kept bouncing as much and for as long as possible.

For points, the brick is very poor. For solid strategy, the brick is totally useless. It ends games too early by dealing too much damage and can produce no more than three total hits per turn (usually 1 or 2 or 0!). To all you noobs out there, FORGET ABOUT BRICK! CONCENTRATE ALL YOUR EFFORTS ON LEARNING TO USE BOUNCER AND CLUSTER! YOU WILL EARN MORE POINTS MUCH FASTER AND EARN SPANNERS MUCH SOONER.

Learn the maps and create your own POSITION-POINT strategies. Learn to understand the safest standing positions on each map, and then learn at least 1 precise point (usually the size of a single pixel) to aim your mouse to produce a devastating bouncer shot that ricochets all over the place for multiple hits. Once you have found that point, be careful not to lose it (i.e. by moving your mouse-curser). That devistating shot will often be good enough to kill everyone
on the map.

Not for scoring, CRAZY FROG. Indeed, the brick can be useful for the mere killing of opponents. KILLING is not the main goal, however, when one is concerned with SCORING. If it is a high score that you want, then ideally you will keep your opponents alive as long as possible. By issuing as many hits as possible with low powered weapons in a single round, you will rack up more points than if you issue say, 6 total hits in a round with the brick. The game designers want greater rewards for strategic play, not well placed/lucky shots with over-powered weapons.

Yes, spanners have a much higher scoring potential than
brick because there are three separate projectiles. Even so, a nice bouncer shot will yield a higher score than a nice spanner shot 80% of the time because the ball has multiple hit potential.

Again, I urge noobs to concentrate on learning how to use the low powered weapons because experienced players can easily avoid silly hail-mary brick and spanner shots and then embarrass you with a direct cluster pop (this is the most impressive shot in the game when done deliberately, IMHO) or a multiple hit bouncer shot.

The scenario CRAZY FROG presents is basically the only time when brick and spanners are useful: at close range when your zwok's safety is in question and the threat needs to be eliminated immediately.

Forgot to mention...

Though I am often extremely impressed by some of the creative ways people lob NORMAL balls to damage me,
I feel I must discourage the use of this weapon overall. The bottom line is: you must be extremely accurate to use a NORMAL ball to its full potential. It's about as easy as brick or spanner to get a SINGLE hit on an opponent, but getting MULTIPLE hits on that same opponent can be really tough depending on the terrain.

BOTTOM LINE: If there's no way to get MULTIPLE hits on a

-single player
or
-a group of players in close proximity of one another

with NORMAL, then there is no reason not to use another weapon with higher scoring potential and/or better odds of executing the play as you've planned.

My accuracy also reads 0 percent -Liam S-. As far as I can tell, this is just a glitch that affects a medium minority of Zwok users. I have two accounts; one with accuracy 47 percent, and the other 0. It was zero from the moment I created the Zwok, and it's stayed the same ever since.

hey, now there are like 4 Greinz in the top 12, does anyone know if they are all just the same person, using hacks to get the Greinz in the lead?! and also, Lurch always seems to try to kill me with a brick, even though we are in the same team!

if u want to use spanners ur overall score needs to be 80+ easy hinds if u point a wepon at the oponent it will not hit point a litel above and ull hit them XD

Ramell makes a good point. It is crucial to aim higher than the level of the terrain if you are attempting a close range shot. If I am less than 1 inch away from my opponent, I tend to aim slightly below that opponent's hit-point box. This generally produces the intended result.

Well I havent checked here in awhile. I was really glad to see ann r key had left a post or two. I remember playing with you several times on your way up the ladder. You were playing like gangbusters before slowing down, because you started below me, but passed me when I was in the 280 range in rank; next thing I know you're in the top 5. I stopped playing at the end of June 06, and I only dropped slightly over 100 in rank in 6 months. I guess I didnt like the game quite as much after the spanners and other new features were brought in, plus I had been playing for 9-12 months, and everyone gets tired of a game after awhile. But it is still a cool game. I actually got to be a tester in a sense for awhile, because when they made the rankings searchable, the result it would spit out would be different than if you scrolled through the rankings. I emailed them and pointed it out.

There's definately an accuracy glitch, mine is zero too (after over 1000 matches). In fact all the statistics appear to be screwed up. I just played 2 games, but the game says I just played 7! The stats also say that the Blue team uses Bricks 99% of the time.

You know, this game has got to be one of the most commented games here....

I actually disagree with alot of what HagBreath said. You earn points depending on the DAMAGE you deal. So if throwing a Bouncer will only get you 20 damage, and a Brick would get you 90, you'll get more for the brick. The brick has it's uses, and it'd be silly just to "forget about it". I'll agree that the Brick isn't the best weapon - the chances of you actually hitting something are slim. But if you're throwing something across a flat surface, you may be able to hit 2 people with a brick at the same time. It all depends on the situation.

However, (pretending that the "health meter" is out of 100) if you opponent has 10 health and you hit them with a brick, you'll only get the score worth for that 10 damage. So, go for the for the people with fuller health.

And who CARES about score anyway? There are tons of people playing. Just play for fun, and play for the win! This is why it's a game - not a contest.

Sorry to be a stickler, but Ainegue is wrong on this one. A bouncer on the fly is worth the same as a brick on the fly. Scoring is based on the difficulty of shots, not on the amount of damage dealt.

Hello, Ezone FC here. A bit curious though on how the accuacy works. I can say that I played a good amount of time now and I've been going up the ranks almost to the 100! position. Only problem is my accuacy meter still says 0%. It would be nice if someone would comment on this lag. This will definetly help a lot!

My strategy is to rush the opposite team, and it works because everyone expects you to stay back and pound them with long range shots. I go up there and use high speed bouncer shots and spanners, and everybody still shoots over me!! I do have some of my teammates shoot me by mistake, but I get like 7 hits average.

To all newbies: Do not try to hide in the bottom of trenches!! It's a stupid way to get killed in one shot! Also, even though they are weak, rollers are more predictable than bouncers, use them.

I got 603 matches and 0% accuracy, lol, something is seriosly wrong...

I was wondering... people say that they "played 18 matches and have a rank of 712". I think that's the page they were on. Because I've played 248 matches, and I have a rank of 16300, and I'm on page 54...

well.. i think the stats are a completely glitch.., you know, i played 500 games and i think i lost 20 or 30(im grienz) and in the stats the bluz have 53% of the matches and the top 10 players i think they just cheat.. cause maybe you can get 4500 or 5000 per game.. but they have 46365765378 its crazy...
