MacopismCreated by Macoto Yanagisawa of Japan, this Shockwave work of art is a nice diversion from the usual fare.

Although it's not Electroplankton, the title of this interactive musical animation toy shares similar meaning: bioluminescent dinoflagellates that live in marine and aquatic environments, and when grouped in large numbers make the sea phosphorescent. And while playing with its amazing and hypnotic displays, I was constantly reminded of Nintendo's latest musical wonder-toy for its dual-screen handheld.

There is much to see and hear in this electro-luminescent piece. Just click the mouse to cycle through the displays, move the mouse to interact with each.

Mesmerizing and beautiful, just what I needed to start my day.

Ahh... so serene and calm. I love the way the colors explode when you change patterns.

i'm really glad that you posted this. last summer i spent most of my time in my room in the middle of the night playing with this at its albinoblacksheep location- then i moved and got a new computer and after a month or so alveolata notiluca neonlight stopped working on albinoblacksheep, and no manner of searching turned up its original location. so it's really fantastic that this turned up.

Thanks, Cami, that just made my day. =)

Yes, this is a different Mike than the one above -_- This is a very cool, serene, calm game. i think it says the patterns on the left in japanese because it scrolls when you switch. I was wondering if someone could translate them?

Reply

I've played this game before, but the best pattern by far is balls dropping from the top quickly. You have a white circular 'bubble' to maneuver around to catch the falling balls. The patterns this creates is almost like playing a game.
Keep it up, Jay!

It's a bit of a late reply, but just in case anyone else was curious like Mike up there about the different names that appear and what they mean, here's a rough translation. the rest of the descriptive writing is in japanese, but the titles of each of them are in chinese.

the struggle, the musical scales, the shout, the riverflow, dizziness, the crisscross, the reaction, the lotus flower, the conflict, the spray, fireworks (or the sparks), the ascension, the falling star, water feathers, the gravitational force, the wheel dance, the galaxy, the applause (or admiration), the comet, the return, the long journey, rebirth, the naive, the northern lights.

it's not in the same order everytime so i hope you guys can figure out which is which! hopefully that helped out. being able to visualise it with its description does add to the enjoyment of it, but its awesome and peaceful with or without.

I'm going to have to dissagree with everyone and say THAT WAS BORING AS WACHING MY HAIR GROW IN A MIRROR 5 MILES AWAY FROM ME. sorry you all had to hear that.

I don't relate to the hype either, like Chase.. The dissonant random noise wasn't peaceful at all :(

I agree with Chase. This was a boring game, though with cool graphic effects. Also, I side with RoyK because even when you did nothing it still made noise.
My ratings out of 5:

Graphics: 4
Sound: 2.5
Gameplay: 1.5
Overall: 2/5

I really didn't really get the point of the game...
Can someone explain it to me?

To those who are a bit confused about this "game"...keep in mind that it isn't a game but an "interactive musical animation toy"
So just relax and enjoy!

There are at least two displays that feature a varying tubular figure of dots whose far point follows the cursor. If you move the cursor off the window the far point snaps to directly away from you so you are looking up the length of the figure. If you sit and watch for a half hour or so while meditating about numbers you can see God doing arithmetic...fascinating if you have the patience.
