Lately I have been hearing about Disney's new Shockwave-based MMOG, the Virtual Magic Kingdom, and so I decided to create an account and check it out. The online game is presently in beta, and for a limited time anyone can set up an account and join in the fun for free.
The sign-up process was relatively painless, with just an email, name and address being all they ask. The email address wasn't even verified before I was logged on and creating my character.
Initially, you have just a few options with which to outfit an avatar. Choose a gender and skin color, and then if you like, change the color of your shirt, pants and shoes. Later, in the game, you can win other outfits and accessories, or purchase additional items with credits earned by in-game quests.
You also create your very own room when you begin. Use it to design and decorate with furnishings earned and collected from the game. Several room motifs are available such as Mad Hatter's tea party, undersea world, Tiki Tiki Tiki room, or the old West.
Once in the game there isn't any doubt that it is Disney Online, simply because the visuals are very pretty. The entire park is represented virtually by their respective areas: Fantasy Land, Adventure Land, Tomorrow Land, and Main Street, and each area has 'instances' of each of the major attractions. These instances are pseudo-3D rooms with an isometric view where players can interact with each other. There may be multiple instances of a room to support the number of players visiting that area at any given time.
While sightseeing throughout the park there are many different things to do. While I haven't seen and done everything there is to see, I did purchase a camera with which to take pictures of the Mickey Mouse silhouettes hidden all around the park—there's one in the screen shot above, can you find it? Collect enough of them for credits to spend on clothing and furnishings for your room.
There are also multiplayer games to compete in. The one I played was called the Castle Fireworks game and it featured multiple levels. Each level consists of colored symbols being launched like fireworks against the backdrop of an area of the park. Each player must click the mouse at the pinnacle of the symbol's arc using the same colored symbol as the one launched. Points are awarded based on how accurate the player was in selecting the correct symbol and clicking on the best position at the appropriate time. The fireworks game can support up to 100 players in a single game.
Interacting with other players is, at times, difficult due to the very restrictive dictionary that your words must appear within. For example, numbers are not allowed to be spoken at any time, though I have no idea why numbers might make an environment unsafe. It seemed odd that someone kept saying "I found won" when looking for the hidden Mickeys, until I tried to type the same thing a bit later. Then, after catching on and getting used to the word substitution thing, I was asked by a cast member not to use dictionary words for numbers as they were trying to keep things safe. My connection was mysteriously dropped seconds later.

I would guess the numbers were banned to try and go some way to preventing the dodgy going on you inevitably get in games with the chat feature. No "asl???", or "this is my phone number for Disney".
It restricts things considerably but I can understand their reasoning.

I did a little reading on their policies. I think they disallow numbers because of the policy against giving out phone numbers. A kid cannot give out their home address to a stalker if they can't type in the numbers. Of course, homophones are always viable anyhow...

My guess is they don't let you use numbers so that you can't give your address or phone number to another player. 'Cuz, you know, anyone you meet online who wants to meet you in real life must be a child molester. :P
Yeah, I just discovered this yesterday as well. It looks pretty good and would definitely check back to see what other games they'll put in there.
Basically, it looks like Disney's trying to come up with their own version of "Puzzle Pirates".
That must be it, ages, addresses and phone numbers. Well, I just thought it was a bit silly, but I can now see the point. I would never think of giving anyone my address or phone number online, but the 10-14 year-old target audience may not be as wise.
I read an article at skotos recently in the series of "Online Games & The Law" about how COPPA affects online games. Well, in case you havent read it, it basically says anyone trying to make site for children under 13 is crazy. Its so much more complicated that most sites just exclude under 13 visitors. Im pretty sure the dictionary in Disney games (dont they use similar thing in ToonTown?) comes from same problem.
About the game itself. Its very hard to make interesting game which does not primarly involve running around with big gun/axe and shooting/hitting orcs/aliens. So the minigames where quite good, maybe little too much about the reflexes for my liking. And taking finding hidden Mickeys was great, they are quite well hidden and require sharp eye. The game did crash couple of times and it looked a bit slow, but I suppose thats why they call it beta.
I think it's ridiculous to make you give your address to them. I doubt anyone would let their kids send their address to some website, even if it is Disney. It's pretty restricting as well. I'm from England and it won't work for me.

I agree that there were a lot of things to keep someone interested in playing without the need for a gun or axe. It really did feel like a virtual magic kingdom.
Your observation about it being slow was also a complaint I had while playing the fireworks game, but I still won anyways. =)

this looks almost -EXACTLY- like habbo hotel. the way the game is played.. the text, especially. how it rises off the screen like that. and the sprites, etc.
h.h. has a kind of 'cube' style in its art work.
not unlike the style of story scenes in katamary damacy.

Habbo Hotel is not a game... it's more like a chatroom where they want you to use credit card money to buy stuff. The only conflict really is that you can't buy stuff, and your weapon is the credit card. Cha-ching!

This game has had me hooked ever since you posted it.
I think that Disney probably recruited some of hte designers of the Habbo Hotel to produce this. They are too similar to ignore the consistency.
Habbo hotel sucked because all the people did in that game was find mates and go to private rooms for kinky crap. It was impossible to just have fun and a pleasant conversation. Disney's dictionary is annoying at times but almost completely fixes this problem.
On the whole, it is a very pleasant environment and the games are challenging enough to keep me coming back.

habbo can sometimes give viruses, can't it? vmk is really fun, but they monitor everything you say and sometimes you can't get out what you want to say...on habbo, you can say too much!
I've been playing Disneys Virtual Magic Kingdom for ages now and I think it's absolutely great.
It does take a while for the authorities to vertify your name (so you have to be: Guest4761874 eg.) But other than that it's really good.
Not being able to use alot of words is hard, but they have good reason to restrict vocabulary.
The site is so different from most other game sites of today that it's refreshing. It's great not to have people going asl? asl? asl? all the time.
Most people just go there to have a bit of clean fun. Considering todays' attitudes to most games sites I reckon this sort of approach should be taken more often.
I may sound really serious, but this is coming from a teen not a parent.

I don't know why anyone didn't noticed this. If you hover What is VMK then click on Developer Credits, you'll see one (of the two) are Sulake, the same people who do the various habbo hotels. So, that's why it's so much like hh.

I thought this game might be on-par with Kingdom Hearts but it ends up being close to some Orwellian nightmare. Why do we think it's okay to limit kids' dictionaries at this level to protect them? I cant put all of them up but I can tell u where to get them. On the vmk site, there is that Kellogs thing. The "Earn special pirate powers". Click there and there will be a new window. On the right of the window, there is a skull rock picture. On top of it click there and play the game and when u win or lose, they will say get code. click there and they will show u the code. Play it a lot of times to get more codes. :)
