The Asylum

The Asylum: Psychiatric Clinic for Abused Cuddly Toys, that's the extended name of this very odd Flash game. And the gameplay is just as strange: through various therapeutic methods, attempt to lead the cuddly toy patients to resolve their traumatic past experiences. The game has very humorous moments, and some very adorable characters. It's a remarkable achievement at combining narrative with interactive gameplay. The game just may give you goosebumps and perhaps even make you cry.

If you have ever wondered if someone would ever make a game for therapists, it's time to stop wondering.

STORIES

Kroko:

He used to be a hot-water bottle cover, but his owner took away his bottle and used him as a mop cover, which was the cause for his hydrophobia. The pattern on the lady's dress looked like eyes so he was afraid of the eyes.

Lilo:

His owner used his zip mouth to keep her things in, and she hid the answers to a test in his mouth, but the teacher found out and took away the answers so Lilo feels he has to work out the puzzle himself

Sly:

His owners used his tail to keep drugs in, but they saw a police car behind them so they threw him out the window. His rattle got run over so his rattle broke and the drugs got crushed and made him go crazy

Dolly:

Her owner used her as a chew toy for her dog which made her have a fear of dogs, and also a fear of her wolf side. She's afraid of letting her wolf side get out, but she's sometimes confused between her sheep self and her wolf self (hence the barking and howling when she's still a sheep)

Dub:

When his owner was at the airport on one of those escalator things she dropped him and he couldn't catch up with her. A health club owner picked him up and turned his shell inside out because it had a racing stripe on it. Dub is obsessed with training now because he's afraid of being left behind if he's not fast enough.

Awesome game - took a little while to get the hang of it (ended up killing one of the characters with electroshock therapy at one point- I think I'll need some therapy myself after doing that!!) But totally worth the time and effort. Very unique....

Does anyone know whaere i can still buy a kroko? i want one so deperatly bad, but they site doesnt have any, and either does ebay.

Reply

Well I just cured all three and have a blast while doing it. Dolly made me think about an Alf stuffed animal I had as a child. (If you finish with Dolly you will understand.)
The only help I can give is; if you are stuck, try the same things over.

Reply

Can anyone give me a hint for the sheep?

Reply

Dolly responds well to a lot of talk therapy, dream analysis and occupational therapy. Try things a couple of times if you reach a roadblock. Do you need more specific info?

Reply

yes, thanks!
is that the end?
i'd hoped there'd be a little more at the end...

Reply

This is the cutest game ever! but i didn't quite understand the sheep one...he's scared of the dog...but does the wolf really exists or only in his mind?

Reply

Dear lordness, that was the bestest game ever! I got stuck on the hippo but then he overcame his fears and all was well! I do believe Kroko (sp?) was my favorite. If only I wasn't a cheapo, I would buy him. I want him...so much...

I don't know much about computers and even less about the web.

Can anyone tell me how to "activate" The Asylum.

When I click on "Click," nothing happens.

Thanks.

Reply

If nothing happens when you click the link, then you have a pop-up blocker that is preventing the game from opening. You need to either disable your pop-up blocker, or tell your browser to allow pop-ups from my site. No worries about the latter, the only pop-ups you will receive from me are the games. =)

I can't figure out how to get lilo to stop playing the gameboy after it s hooked up to the phone and the therapedic interview and the drug administration havent worked and proffessional assistance doesn't do anything

I wonder if there will ever be more patients.

An incredibly adoreable game, I love it so much! I might just have to buy a Kroko plush... the Dolly plush is adoreable, too, and even has a reversible suprise! I'm playing the game for the third time now... so addicting...

Reply

How do you make the hippo stop playing the video game after it's hooked up to the phone line? AHHHHHHH! He's going to die!

Reply

immnse game i love it!

i really want a good online tamagotchi thing any hints anyone?

Reply

please help me i dont get how to play

Reply

Yo-yo - first you must find the three patients, they are behind the double doors once you get inside the asylum.

Then, click on one of the toys to begin therapy.

Once inside the room, select from the available therapy options on the doctor's clipboard.

Keep trying until the patient is either driven insane, or cured. Hopefully you'll try to cure them! =)

I just visited this game's site again and I noticed they added a new animal! There's a snake there now. Hopefully, it'll be another cute story like the other three. Just thought I'd let you know since I don't know if you heard about it yet.

BTW...I love your site. It's my go-to site when I need a break from work. Thanks!

Reply

How did you create this game? It is truly one of a kind. Are you adding any more toys in the future?

Reply

Dani - the game was created in Flash, and I agree it is one of a kind.

If you would like to leave a message for the author of the game, open the large guest book on the receptionist's desk inside the game. There is a place to leave a note to Kinderman inside the book.

Reply

ugh im stuck on the snake o_O

Reply

I did it! I cured Kroko! That was so awesome. I was surprised at how well everything fit into place when I saw the ending. I'm going to try to cure the others now.

Reply

Help! I can't cure lilo! he has the game boy hooked up to the phone line, and both available options don't do anything. Help!

Reply

Lilo needs some more musicotherapy.

Reply

Heh, I nearly killed Lilo. Crocko was my favorite one.

Reply

Thanks so much! I loved it! I have two plush aligators, so I started the game with Kroko. You made a wonderful work! :)

Ps.: I "saved" all the patients, but didn't understand that end? What I have to do after all gone?

Reply
Anonymous August 1, 2005 5:21 AM

Wonderful game! I didn't quite understand what the deal was with Krok's ending, but otherwise I thought this game was alternately cute and unsettling.

Reply

I wish Websense didn't block this :(

They expect me to do actual *work* here!?!?

Reply

Someone please help me. I just can't seem to make the snake any better. Someone please give me a hint on what is the most effective thing for him. This is driving me CRAZY!!! Thank you if you help.

Reply

Yay! I beat one!Yep my first one,Kroko, but I did try Dolly and Sly today but they were much harder.Last time I played you can't use Dolly or Kroko so I chose Lilo but she was to hard too :p

Reply

w00t! I beat sly! go me! he liked musico therepy.oh and paint therepy worked too then I did some thing else and then surgery and poof! hes cured oh ya I used dream analisis too

What was that thing Kroko had at the end?
That red bottle-like thing...

Reply
Trojan Man August 7, 2005 1:45 AM

i think its a hot water bottle, to keep him warm.

btw, that game was great. kept me busy for a good couple of hours.

Reply

This is one of the best flash game I ever seen.

Plus, did anyone noticed there was a condom inside Lilo? LOL.

Reply
braindancer August 9, 2005 4:05 PM

so...
i have cured the snake (music therapy/dream analysis/therapeutic talk)
the sheep (painting/dreams/talk/drugs)
the kroko (motivation/talk/dream)
but after you hook up the hippo with that
gameboy and phone line... i guess there is no way out, so DONT USE THE TELEPHONE ONCE HE HAS THE GAME BOY

Reply

Once Lilo, the hippo, is playing telephone-supplied Game Boy, the only way to proceed is to make use of the electroshock therapy. To do so, move the mouse cursor "under the bed" to the left of Lilo; it should cause the bed sheet to lift, revealing the electrodes. I think electroshock simply "resets" the patient to their original state, if you do it correctly.

Reply
luv animals August 16, 2005 8:06 AM

Just cleared the game. it took me 3 hours!! it was a nice game and i hope that more patients come in soon(0^A^0)!!

hint**; the painting therapy doesn't really lower the animal's stats/improvement. it helps in a way.

Reply

I had played the game before, and I decided to play again. I was delighted to find a new character! (sly the snake) This truly is a wonderful game. Keep 'em coming Jay!

Reply

The electrodes don't work for me! They don't do anything when I try to click.

Reply
happyslushie August 20, 2005 5:17 PM

professional help gives you hints on which treatments to give to the patient, just bear through all that freudian-jungian mumbo-jumbo.

Reply

I've cured the snake, Dolly, and Kroko (had to use electrodes, figured out how). Now I just have that damn hippo to cure. Tip: One of the main keys for the snake is Music Therapy.

I think it's funny how dolly was a...

Dog toy. Lol.

Reply

I love this game and I think it's so fun. But after you cure all 4 animals, they should at least have a special ending. It's just a lonely blank patient room when you're done. :/

Reply

But the thing about this game is they keep adding stuffed animals to it, so it wouldn't have an ending until they have decided that they would add the last animal....

Hi Norman - it was quite some time that passed before the author added the latest toy. I suppose we can only hope he will add another soon.

And this is a very unique game. I have never seen anything quite like it.

Reply

I'm playing this second time, 'tis so fun.

Just some big hints for two of the stuffed animals. Can be MAJOR, MAJOR spoilers -

The snake was used for storing... stuff in his tail. He can't rattle it.
The sheep was a dog toy.

Reply

Jay, this is possibly my favourite game you have reviewed to date.
Is there any news about some other games like this one?
-Kat

Reply

And for some of those struggling with Lilo the Hippo, here are a few hints to keep you going.
1. He's quite an artist. When in doubt, give him an easel.
2. Don't ever, EVER, give him the crisis hotline once he has the gameboy. Bad idea.

Reply

It won't let me play for some reason... When I click on the link a new window opens and claims that its downloading the info... but then it white screens on me. :(

Reply

It works for me Jess. What browser are you using?

Reply

that was nice... i liked it! hehehe... i hope they add more helpless, hapless stuffed animals... youngER people will have a hard time understanding some situations... or so i think... hehehe... good luck to all those who will try this... i sacrificed my homeworkSS for this... ^__^

Here are all of the animals' stories

Lilo:

Lilo was used as a girl's purse. The girl used Lilo to hide the answers on a math exam (the problem she was solving has to do with Lilo's puzzle)but was caught and Lilo was confiscated.

Krocko:

Krocko was a hot water bottle holder, but a woman used him as a mop pad for the bathroom.

Sly:

A girl and her boyfriend used Sly's tail to hold drugs. When the police stopped them, they threw Sly out the window and his tail was crushed by a car, turning the drugs into a powder that his body absorbed, causing his problems

Dolly:

Dolly was used as a dog's chew toy, and her fear of dogs manifested itself in her wolf side.

Reply

I've only just discovered The Asylum. What a delightful game.

The animations are excellent, the individual character stories are both funny and moving, the concept is just bizarre but works so well... all in all a great game.

I managed to cure Kroco, Dolly and Sly, but I just couldn't help Lilo. Maybe I'll go back and give it another try - I hate the thought of him stuck in that hospital with nothing but his jigsaw puzzle...

Reply

Is it just me-or does anyone else get really emotional and have a sense of acomplishment when one is 'cured'?

Walkthrough for Kroko:
(WARNING: DO NOT CLICK THE SPOILER BELOW IF YOU WISH TO COMPLETE ON YOUR OWN)

1. click Therapeutic interview.
2. Click Administration of drugs
3. Now, while he is disoriented, click Dream analysis.
4. Now click Motivation training.
5. Ok, now click Dream analysis again.
6. Well, we need a cure for this fear of eyes then, won't we? Of course we will, so click Musicotherapy.
7. So, now everything is solved, right? Well, let's see. Click Dream analysis again.
8. Oh, bad luck! it appears that Kroko is also afraid of water. well, this can be solved with yet another click. click Desensitisation.
9. Well, it seems that might have cured him. Let's click Dream analysis one last time.
Congratulations, you successfully cured Kroko!

Incidentally, Kroko is my favorite one. Well, now I'm going to try to cure Lilo, so far I haven't been able to help him very much.

Reply

Yippy! I did it!!!

Reply

I finally beat dolly, if you don't want to know what happens don't read on!
She's scared of this dog type thing that keeps licking her in her dreams, it's actually a dog though not the wolf inside of her. When you press occupation treatment, you hand her some wool and needles and she nits a 'muzzle' and puts it on herself. then after other treatments she becomes more used to the wolf and in the dreams see's herself being picked up by a dog. Finally a nurse comes through with a dog and the wolf takes the muzzle dolly made and puts it on thedogs nose! and shes cured!

Reply

This spoiler is for Sly the snake

First you need to drug him. Then do Dream analysis, after that you give him a rattle and then again a dream analysis, theraputic interview, yet another dream analysis, and then surgery.

Reply

"Walkthrough" for kroko, the croc with aquaphobia:

1. give him an interview, and get that box of crispy croco off
2.Give him some drugs, he'll be less jumpy.
3.Send him to sleep. in other words make him dream, now watch, hmm... not good, he's really scared now...
4.He needs some motivation, give him some.
5. Click musicotherapy to give him a flute.
6. now its time to make him dream agian.
7.look He's still hanging on, the motivation tape comes down to tell him to flieg! but he still doesn't want to go down, the his flute falls NOT THE FLUTE NOOO! so he goes after it, now he starts playing it and makes the eyes go away but loses his flute in the water.
8.Give him a rorchatest (that thing with the ink blots)
and he will see his hot-water bottle.
9. do destenisitation (or whatever it's called) and now finally let him dream, sit back and watch the ending!

  9. And then use DREAM ANALYSIS and she'll have a flashback, and finally

  10. Use TRIGGER STIMULUS so she can put her nose sock on the dog and make friends with her inner wolf

Dub:

  1. First use DREAM ANALYSIS

  2. Then use MOTIVATION TRAINING

  3. Next take away his stopwatch with CONFISCATION so he isn't distracted

  4. Then DREAM ANALYSIS again and he'll retreat into his shell

  5. Then look under the bed and click(If you can't find it click PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE)and electrocute him slightly until he comes out (thanks Channy)I don't really like this bit :(

  6. Then use EXERCICE THERAPY yay a balloon!

  7. DREAM ANALYSIS again...

  8. EXERCICE THERAPY...and then he'll start to cry for a while, and you'll have to wait a bit. Then wait until there are no tissues left in the box

  9. And finally use DREAM ANALYSIS.How cute is that? Cured and finished ;)

STORIES

The links won't work and I don't think it's my internet. Is the game down?

How cute! <3 I'm not used to these kind of games so it took me a while to get... I tried the poor thing in the box, but it ran away on the first move I did. e.e I tried doing Dolly next. It took me a while of doing random actions, but then I started to get the hang of it.

I would go "Eek, no!" when

she kept hitting herself with some of the items I gave her

. D:

It's so frustrating when I do the wrong move once I start making her better and then she becomes worse... x_x

I has low expectations after seeing the opening with very bad audio quality, but this is pretty fun. o3o

Very cute game though, and I'm glad I found it.
This gets a 8/10 in my opinion. Hard to get, but still seems worth giving a try. ^-^ Wish me luck? xD *still working on Dolly*

bdswork: This step throws off a lot of people but
HINT:

What do some people do when they cry?

They sometimes go in their room/bathroom/where ever to be...

left alone for a while. What do you think would be best?

Bother someone when they're crying or wait?

ANSWER:

you need to wait for Dub to stop crying. Just wait a bit and let him cry until he runs out of tissues. Then I think you do a dream analysis.

Hey y'all! I just finished it. I do agree that there should've been a cutscene or a TADA~ when you cure all of them. I just sat there going 'lolwhut'. It felt weird without the patients. I had the most fun with Sly, mostly because his was the easiest for me. I love Dolly though and I thought that

the fact that she was one of those 2 side plushies where if you flip it inside out, you get another plushie. I loved it when at the end

Dolly and the wolf/dog inside of her worked together to shut up that huge dog.

I thought Kroko was adorable. His ending was my favorite. He looked so cute and I felt like giving him a big hug when he started crying from being so happy.

I thought Dub's story was sad. When I was little, I really loved my plushies/beanie babies and one time

I lost one I really liked, I guess kinda like how the girl in the game accidentally dropped and lost Dub.

((AHAHAHA, look at me! Getting all dorky over a game... *embarrassed* To think I really had such low expectations. For some reason, I was able to play this without any sound since I got so into it. O_o;))

I didn't like curing Lilo... Probably because the first time

I gave her the cup+ball after the dream with the

huge equation and she spazzed out trying to answer it

and then she hit herself in the head with it so I had to wait...

Her story didn't really touch me at all like the others.

It was strange because at some stories, I really hated the girl and then in others I felt kinda sorry. Anyway, overall I thought this was great. It's hard to understand and people that just want shooting, adventure, action and want to sit at the edge of their seat might hate this game and call it dumb or a waste of time, but if you're patient, you might enjoy this.

Takes a while to get used to and most of the time I was pretty much guessing and crossing my fingers that I'm doing the right step, but it was worth my time, IMO.

They were all great! Lilo gave me the hardest time. I had to "shock" reset him a couple few times. lol. Very entertaining. Needs a bunny.

How Do you get this game in English? It won't show the American flag or anything!!!

There is only two things wrong with this game one: it has no background music and two: in my personal opinion Lilo's ending wasn't as good as the others.

Like when Lilo called the girl to come pick him/her up I was thinking "Why would you do that, I mean isn't she the person who made you hide answers to tests in your mouth thus causing you to feel guilty?" I'm just saying if I were Lilo I would be like "Forget you! I'm not going to help you cheat again. I have a better life to live."

Oops, I killed Kroko. D:

So disturbing...and yet...so darn cute! :)

Reply

hiee! I tried playing this again because i love the game but somehow it gives me a download error for dolly and dub =((((

Reply

Dolly and Dub's sessions won't load for me. Both of them stop at a status of "-1" and never resume loading. Any ideas?

Reply

This game is painful. You will find yourself going "awwwwwwwwwww!!" really sympathetically every two seconds and wishing you could give every patient a huge hug.

Reply

Awesome little game! I couldn't stop interpreting all that's going on to the stuffed animals like it was some "Braidian" postmodern ironic-sympathetic metaphor for real human problems and psychiatric conditions… :-) And besides, the turtle reminded me through the whole treatment of (not so good) mother of a friend, so I read from turtle's reactions probably a LOT more than it was ment to… :-D
Great minimalistic animations that tell so many things and bring so much depth to cute patients! To my psychotherapeutic knowledge, the "cases" are consistent, accurately described (when you ask for HELP) and logic. There should be more such games… Just awesome. !

Kroko and Sly were the hardest for me. I think I reset Kroko more than twice. >.
This game is Great! Especially since, as a psychology buff, I can understand some of the incredibly long-winded clinical studies under the 'help' button.

I felt so good when I helped Dub and Kroko.
Lilo was the easiest for me. I did her first.

Reply

I think this is the best game i've ever played! Kroko was my favourite :) he looked so adorable with his pillow! I wanted to hug him several times during my time curing him. Love it :)

Reply

I'm unable to get Dolly and Dub into the room for some therapy. When I click either of the two, it says they will be ready in one minute and then "-1" pops up next to the name. What should I do? I thought it was me, but this is my third time playing and I still can't treat Dub and Dolly.

Reply

D: I can't get Dub or Dolly to work for me! Whenever I try to get them to load it shows -1! Can anyone help?

This is a very special and touching game. One of those you never forget. Original, creative, clever, emotional. The producers should be very proud of their achievement.

Reply

I'd forgotten how good this game was!

When doing motivational training with Dolly, it seems to have both the english and russian dialogue overlapped, which makes it difficult to read. I don't remember that being a problem before.

[It's been like that for as long as I can remember. I think it's just a bug. I remember thinking it was designed like that to appear as jibberish to Dolly. Or as conflicting voices, struggling for dominance. -Jay]

I love the ending with Dolly.

I LUFF THIS GAME!!!!

I like how you can kill them all with electroshock therapy. there should be more brutal options like that in this game--help them, or torture them mercilessly!

What a great game. It took me quite a while, but it was worth it. I'm happy to see they'll be adding a new patient soon :)

Reply

Having a problem with Lilo? Don't worry...

If she is addicted to gaming, you can...

use electroshock therapy by

moving your mouse under the bed. You will see the bedcovers pull up to reveal a strange contraption. This is what you will use to administer the shock therapy. Its pretty straightforward. Unfortunately, she'll go back to the point where she's just put the puzzle together.

To keep it from happening again, make sure to

use "dream analysis" RIGHT AFTER "play therapy."

Speaking of which, Dr. Wood seems to be a new patient (maybe you have to complete all the others. You can't get to him quite yet from the start.). Anyone want to go ahead and try? (Going to take me some time...)

Reply

HOOLLEEE COWW!! WHAT HAPPENED?!?!

I tried to give Dr. Wood a rorchach test, but he gave me one instead. Then he told the nurse I was insane, and had me ELECTROCUTED!!

Reply

I just finished Dr. Woo- but I'm not sure he's "cured". He walked out the door, but he seemed like he turned out worse than he started.

that 'claw cult' thing was really creepy. :)

great... this game doesn't have save! i was just about to finish the turtle and he was the last one!

Reply

@JIGuest- Don't worry! Nothing special happens when all the patients have been cured. You'll just receive the satisfaction of looking at an empty waiting room. :) It's made this way so that the creators of the game can just keep adding more patients when they feel like it.

And I finally cured that Dr. Bird thing. I liked his ending, it was sweet, but still--

What the heck was with that creepy cult thing? Not to mention the sock-puppet-doctor's dream. Jeez-- I purposely cured him last since he was the newest. I didn't know he'd leave me with a creeped-out vibe.

I didn't really like his life-story, though.
Sly will always be my favorite.

Dr. Woo..

It's hard to check the help book for insight when Dr. Woo gives up while you read and takes off.

The more therapy I gave Dr. Woo, the crazier he got, and that ending for him! - but I guess he's happy...

Just finished the game! I wonder if there will be another patient any time soon (:

OMG I love this! I wondered if anyone knew of anything similar because I've never seen anything like it.
For the past day and a half I've been playing, mostly trying to get a different outcome for the one that I think got an unhealthy one (sigh) and seeing how many different responses each one has.
I adore these characters. FYI don't try to buy Dr Woods.
